FIRST Robotics Team 2539, the Krypton Cougars, recently won the Hatboro-Horsham competition for the third year in a row. The event, the first of two district qualifying events, was the team’s debut performance for the 2024 season and presented the first opportunity to showcase its new robot, Rhapsody, along with its strategies for the 2024 FIRST Robotics Competition game, Crescendo.
Team 2539 competed against 32 other teams from the mid-Atlantic region at the Hatboro-Horsham event. Team 2539 won its first six qualification matches and finished the first day ranked No. 1 with seven wins to one loss. On the second day, the competition intensified as teams fought for ranking position and a shot to be in the playoff tournament that
afternoon. Team 2539 finished the second day with three more wins against one loss to finish 10-2 overall and remain ranked No. 1. This achievement earned the Krypton Cougars the No. 1 alliance captain and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
During alliance selection, Team 2539 chose Team 5895, Peddie Robotics, and Team 2097, PATH to Domination, to join it for the playoffs. The Krypton Cougars won each of its games in the double-elimination tournament leading up to the finals, where it faced an alliance led by the No. 2 ranked alliance captain. The Krypton Cougars swept the bestof-three finals series to win the competition and secure a 15-2 overall record.
Team 2539 also won the FIRST Engineering Inspiration award,
which celebrates the team with the most outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within its organization, school, and community.
The Krypton Cougars’ second competition of the season was held from March 15 to 17 at Springside-Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. Team 2539 competed against 28 other teams in their district. The Krypton Cougars started the event with a 6-2 record in the team’s first eight qualification matches, putting the team on track to enter the playoffs as the sixth ranked alliance captain. However, it won its last two matches in dramatic fashion, obtaining enough ranking points to surpass all other teams and obtain the No. 1 seed in the tournament. During alliance selection,
Team 2539 used its first overall selection to form an alliance with teams 341 and 5407 in the playoffs. There, the Krypton Cougars again went 3-0 in the double-elimination tournament to reach the finals, where the team faced the fifth ranked alliance. Team 2539’s alliance swept the best-of-three series to claim their second consecutive win at Springside-Chestnut Hill and achieve a 15-2 overall record. With its results at the HatboroHorsham event, Team 2539 earned a spot in the Mid-Atlantic District Championship, which was held at Lehigh University from April 4 to 6. In this event, Team 2539 placed in the top half of the field of more than 60 teams; the team was picked fourth overall during the alliance selection process. During

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.
The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.
“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, Scouting groups, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature–activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated
The sixth edition of the annual PA Family Travel Fair, hosted by Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.
“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”
More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair,
including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.
In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours; food vouchers; and more.
“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”
According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination.
“You can’t really compare it to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”
With assistance from an audience member, a representative of Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland presents information about an amphibian at last year’s PA Family Travel Fair.
The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vacations. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.
“Way too many of us are leaving vacation days on the table at the end of the
year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”

Brittany’s Hope recently announced that Shelly Shepherd will be the speaker at the Brittany’s Ball Gala on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Star Barn at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Shepherd, a motivational speaker, life coach, adoption advocate and mom to Haven Shepherd, will share her family’s story in keeping with the theme of the evening, “Adopting the Future.”
Haven became a double amputee at the age of 14 months, losing her lower legs after her birth parents detonated a bomb while trying to commit a family murder/suicide. Adopted at 20 months, and now the youngest of seven children, Haven continues her miraculous journey. Haven rep-
resented the USA in swimming at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2021 and is well on her way to qualify for the summer Paralympics in Paris this summer.
Brittany’s Hope, headquartered in Elizabethtown, aids orphaned and at-risk children by providing adoption grants to families with the heart to adopt children with special needs, like Haven, and by providing humanitarian support directly to partner children’s homes. One hundred percent of all donations directly support the children served by the organization.
The upcoming gala will also include a silent auction. Community members may register for the auction at www.brittanyshope.org/ events/brittanysball.

Meredith Mills, president and CEO of Country Meadows Retirement Communities, has announced the creation of the “Be Kind to Yourself” initiative to support those who have dedicated their careers to making life better for senior residents.
The “Be Kind to Yourself” initiative aims to bring awareness to the importance of self-care for mental health. During the month of April, Country Meadows and its not-forprofit sister community,
Ecumenical Retirement Community in Harrisburg, will offer tips and activities for co-workers to support their well-being and help prevent burnout. Mills is one of six company experts who will share their best self-care tips. An avid potter, Mills advocates for enjoying a hobby or passion. In addition to being relaxing, hobbies also can provide time for reflection and a sense of purpose. Other tips will focus on sleep, mindfulness, nutrition,
physical activity and giving oneself grace.
Country Meadows and Ecumenical are displaying murals where co-workers can take a break, catch their breath and color. Coloring may help people to increase mindfulness and relieve stress.
The campuses are making the “Be Kind to Yourself” theme their own by organizing their campus initiatives. In addition to purposeful kindness projects residents and staff members create for the campus and community, they are setting up programs such as a compliment board, Kindness Awards, a Buy Nothing Yard Sale Day and a Be Kind to Yourself relaxation room.
Last April, Country Meadows and Ecumenical launched their line of feelgood T-shirts, named for their extra-soft fabric and positive message. A total of 15% of proceeds supports the Co-worker Foundation. This year’s shirt comes in two colors emblazoned with flowers and the “Be Kind to Yourself Because You Matter” mantra. Last year, nearly $800 was raised by T-shirt sales for the foundation, which provides grants to team members who have experienced emergencies.
Ongoing co-worker wellness supports offered by Country Meadows include
an employee assistance program, wellness reimbursement, preventive care medical visits and a paid day off called a Personal Day of Meaning.
Mills, the granddaughter of Country Meadows founders Pennsylvania Gov. George M. Leader and his wife, Mary Jane, is the third generation to carry on the family legacy of compassion, supporting mental health and wellness.
Before beginning the family’s journey into senior care, George was known for his commitment to human welfare. He worked to reform state mental health hospitals to provide better, more compassionate care. During his administration, the Pennsylvania State Office of Aging was established, and licensure standards for practical nurses and an inspection program for skilled nursing facilities to ensure the safety and rights of residents were enacted. Mary Jane was well-known for her kind, generous spirit. She encouraged everyone to perform random acts of kindness and was dedicated to purposeful service.

“Probably
To us, the best means producing a truly authentic, premium product. We start with happy, healthy cows who live at our American Humane Certified™ dairy and focus on top-quality ingredients that result in superior taste you can savor. While you may be seeing more and more “frozen dairy desserts” on the shelf, we still offer REAL ice cream made with less air & higher milkfat for a creamy bite every time.
Try it for yourself and we think you’ll probably agree!
