The Hershey Partnership has announced that its 16th annual Soup Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5. The fall family event will take place at the Hershey Volunteer Fire Company, 21 W. Caracas Ave., Hershey. There will be a wide variety of soups created by 30 to 50 local chefs, both professional and nonprofessional, for attendees to sample and vote on.

The Hershey Area Playhouse’s Theatre Academy will once again offer a June Performance Camp for students in grades one to 12. Each age group will be given a script and the opportunity to audition, rehearse, and perform on the last evening of camp.

The focus for each group will be learning the actors’ tools through fun and educational drama games, exercises, and improvisation exercises. Each student will work on in-depth character work, blocking and movement, and the details and nuances needed for great performance.

This year’s camp runs for two weeks from Monday, June 17, through Friday, June 28. Classes run Monday through Friday and will culminate in a performance

by each age group on June 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friends and family members are welcome to attend the performance.

Meeting times are as follows: grades one to three, 9 to 10:30 a.m.; grades four to six, 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and grades seven to 12, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Memorial Motorcycle Ride Planned The Pennsylvania State Police Museum and the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club will hold the 15th annual “Soldiers of the Law” Memorial Motorcycle Ride on Saturday, April 27, at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy.

Participants will receive a light breakfast, a guided tour of the academy, a self-guided tour of the museum, an event pin, a police-escorted 85-mile ride and a lunch at the academy following the ride.

The ride will begin and end behind the Pennsylvania State Police Academy on Academy Drive which turns off Hersheypark Drive, directly across from Tanger Outlets. Participants will be able to enjoy rural riding at a casual pace in the mountains and valleys of Dauphin, Lebanon and Schuylkill counties, with traffic control

provided by law enforcement.

Ride staging will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

A one-hour tour of the academy will take place at 9:30 a.m., and the ride will depart at 11 a.m. following a memorial ceremony. There is a fee to participate. Commemorative shirts are limited and can also be preordered to ensure the correct size.

This year, the group will remember fallen Pennsylvania law enforcement officers lost during active duty in 2018. Proceeds from the ride will support the museum and the families of fallen officers.

More than four years ago, Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School and Hershey Christian School entered into negotiations and a planning process for LM to acquire Hershey Christian. The enrollment at the Hershey campus of LM has been tenuous since the acquisition.

After four years of operation, the LM board of directors, finance committee and administration unanimously agreed that sustainability of the Hershey campus of LM is no longer viable due to enrollment decline.

LM has experienced enrollment decline for more than 10 years and is in the process of creating a sustainable financial model for the future. LM will be transitioning two campuses. Kraybill will operate independently as of Monday, July 1, and Hershey will close at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

LM will also reduce staff at other campuses.

This consolidation effort reduces the amount of square footage maintained compared to student enrollment numbers.

The model for the future includes an endowment that creates a foundation for New Danville (ND), Locust Grove (LG), Lancaster Mennonite Middle School (LMMS), and Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMH). The current cash endowment is $9 million, with an additional $3 million in non-school properties. Endowment reserves remain strong and in place, preserving ND, LG, LMMS, and LMH campuses. Each campus is moving toward a stronger independent financial health position, yet remaining part of the larger LM system.

LM is implementing a science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) focus system-wide. On the elementary level, MakerSpaces are part of ND and will be part of the LG campus curricula in the 2019-20 academic year. MakerSpaces pro-

vide students the opportunity to solve real-world problems with 21st-century skills, demonstrating critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.

LMMS offers a project-based learning (PBL) curriculum model that also engages seventh- and eighth-graders with four core themes each year. Again, this model is designed to solve current-day issues with a 21st-century skill set. The PBL model is in its fourth year of operation and is meant to allow students to transition into LMH with a new mindset on how to approach more advanced high school material and thrive in the real world.

Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, will hold its 24th annual charity dinner fundraiser on Saturday, April 13, from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster. The all-you-can-eat chicken potpie dinner will be held in the Lodge Multipurpose Room, formerly known as the Lodge Dining Room, at the Freemason Cultural Center of the Masonic Village located at 1 Masonic Drive in Elizabethtown. The main course will be the Pennsylvania Dutchstyle potpie, also known as “wet” potpie, featuring homemade noodles and chicken in a thick stew.

The cost of the dinner includes all-youcan-eat chicken potpie and applesauce, along with a beverage and dessert. Separate costs have been set for adults and for children age 10 and under. Advance ticket purchases are recommended; very limited tickets will be available at the door on April 13. Takeouts will not be available, but quarts of the chicken potpie will be sold for the price of an adult dinner. In addition to the dinner, a Chinese auction will be held for a variety of prizes and gifts.

Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, has raised a total of nearly $45,000 for the Children’s Dyslexia Center through its annual fundraising dinners, with the Lancaster Center being the beneficiary for the past 19 years. The center provides professional treatment, free of charge, to children with dyslexia, and it is sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. The Lancaster Center provides tutoring services to students in the Lancaster County area.

Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is a fraternal organization for young men ages 12 to 21. Through its varied activities, the Order of DeMolay seeks to teach the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership. Students Win Competition get drivers to slow down in work zones.

The winning team’s innovation was called RedWrench. The innovation involves a vehicle being equipped with a built-in transponder and program that receives a signal from a radio beacon within a work zone. That signal then activates such safety features as slowing the vehicle to recommended speeds.

Now in its second year, the PennDOT Innovations Challenge invites high school students in grades nine to 12 to use their problem-solving, creative, and strategicthinking abilities to solve real-world t ransportation challenges. The Innovations

Challenge aims to not only help students explore actual transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also to make them aware of career opportunities at PennDOT. Regional winners will compete at the state championship in Harrisburg on Wednesday, April 10. The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) will present the statewide winning team with a cash prize to be divided among the team members.

Exhibit To Spotlight Local Churches The Hummelstown Area Historical Society has created an exhibit about local churches titled “Faith, Hope, and Charity.”

The exhibit is staged at the society’s History House, 32 W. Main St., Hummelstown.

The exhibit’s displays include the Rev. Curtis Weber’s collection of church pictures, photographs of stained glass windows from six local churches staged by interns Kira Wertz and Olivia Sharrow, New Mexico Adobe Iglesias photographed by Jean Seib-

ert, vintage and current photographs of area churches, and Bibles, prayer books, and hymnals from the society’s collection.

Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, has announced its schedule of services and events during Holy Week.

On Palm Sunday, April 14, worship services will be held at 8 and 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. At 10:30 a.m., the sanctuary choir and children’s choirs will take part in the service. The Derry Brass will accompany both services. Church school for people of all ages will be held from 9 to 10 a.m.

“Evening Praise and Communion,” a meditative worship service, will be held from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, in the chapel.

Mustang Day Celebration Set National Mustang Day will be celebrated at the AACA Museum Inc., 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, on Wednesday, April 17. On National Mustang Day, the members of the Mustang community unites by taking their Mustangs to the road.

The AACA Museum Inc. will celebrate with a day of fellowship and activities in central Pennsylvania.

From 9 a.m. to noon, AACA Museum Inc. will host museum gallery tours and a behind-thescenes “garage” tour. At midday, participants will enjoy lunch on their own. From 1 to 4 p.m., participants will visit the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs. Activities will be open house-style so enthusiasts can arrive anytime within the designated time range to enjoy the appointed activities. Organizers suggest allowing a minimum of an hour and a half at each location.

Students Of The Month Honored Mohler Center Posts Schedule

Lower Dauphin High School has announced that senior Vanessa Skidmore was named Young Woman of the Month for January by the Hummelstown Women’s Club and senior Miles Book was named Young Student of the Month for January by the Rotary Club of Hummelstown.

Vanessa is the daughter of Donna and Greg Wagner. She is a four-year member of the orchestra, where she plays string bass, and is a two-year member of the concert band. She is a four-year member and a leader in the BIG Club, and she is a four-year member of Class Council. She is a two-year member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

In the community, she has performed with the Hershey Symphony Orchestra. She is active with her church and performs in the worship band.

Vanessa plans to attend college to major in music education.

Miles is the son of Lia and Glenn Book. He a four-year member of the cross-country team and is a team captain. He is also a fouryear member of the track and field team. He is a four-year member of the German National Honor Society and a three-year member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. He plays guitar in the jazz band and is a member of the ski club.

In the community, he is active in his church. He operates an after-school robotics program at a local day care. He is an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow, a Boy Scout honor society.

He plans to attend Swarthmore College to major in engineering, with the goal of becoming a developer of affordable housing.

Disc jockey Tony Bennett will spin favorite tunes. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and dancing will begin at 6 p.m. A variety of food will be available for purchase. There is an admission fee, and tickets are on sale now.

The Mohler Center has also planned several upcoming trips. On Wednesday, April 24, travelers may enjoy at day in the Poconos to hear Manilow and Midler tribute artists and more. Participants will depart the center at 9:30 a.m. and return around 8 p.m. There is a fee, and reservations are due by Friday, April 12.

On Tuesday, May 21, the center will offer a Blue Angels Experience trip to Annapolis to watch the elite Navy Blue Angels pilots on their practice day and to enjoy shopping and lunch. The group will depart the center at 7 a.m. and return around 7:30 p.m. There is a fee, and reservations are due by Friday, April 19.

The center will also offer a trip to the Museum of the Bible and Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, Aug. 1. The trip will depart Mohler Center at 6:30 a.m. and return at approximately 9 p.m. There is a fee, and interested participants should register by Monday, July 1.

A trip to see “Come From Away” on Broadway will be offered on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Travelers will depart the center at 7 a.m. and return around 9:30 p.m. There is a fee, and reservations are due by Thursday, May 9.

The 41st annual Motorama Events and Races were held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex on Feb. 16 and 17. The events included Arenacross, go-kart racing, and Quarter Midget racing, along with a variety of remote control racing events, featuring scaled trials, Mudboss, and demolition derby competitions. A Custom Car, Truck, and Bike Show took place in the Expo Hall, and a Speed Show was held in the Main Hall. Ryan Evans and Shannon Aikau from the History Channel series “Counting Cars” interacted with fans and vendors.

The Large Arena hosted Arenacross action in front of a standing-room-only crowd. More than 900 competitors raced for top honors in various classes. The Holeshot Award was presented to the first rider in each class to drag race from the start gate through the first turn.

The Feb. 16 winners included Bryan Dilch, Justin Rodbell, and Derek Leatherman.

Holeshot Awards for Feb. 17 went to Zane Martin, John Natalie, and Derek Leatherman.

Motorama kicked off the racing season for several area go-kart teams. More than 130 teams packed into the Northeast Hall.

Quarter Midget racing took place on both days in the Northwest Hall. Winners included Hoyt Conant, Jaden Brown, Kenny Beinhower, Cody Cordova, and Will Fisher.

The Robot Conflict took place in the

Small Arena. Competitors tested their robots in three-minute grudge matches against their opponents.

The Mudboss competitions also returned to Motorama. Taking home the Stock Mudboss title on Feb. 16 and the 13.5 Mudboss title on Feb. 17 was Brian Wynn from New York. For the fourth consecutive year, Motorama included a demolition derby.

Both new and old custom cars and trucks were displayed in the Custom Car, Truck, and Bike Show. On the other side of the complex, the Speed Show featured several hundred racing and high-performance vehicles. Speed Show awards were presented to cars in various categories.

Fans and drivers donated to four preselected charities. The recipient organizations were Vista Adult Services in Hershey, the Elizabeth Loranzo iCare Foundation in Middletown, Sick Recovery in Pine Grove, and the Eagle Foundation, which is a part of the Cumberland Valley School District. In addition, the Central Pennsylvania Blood Blank held a blood drive in the Giant Expo Hall.

A two-day Ms. Motorama pageant concluded on Saturday morning on the Speed Show stage, with Regina Swinger of Lilly announced as the winner.

Students Place In Competition A Lower Dauphin High School team of Miran Rezhan, Scott Allen, Robert Bray, Jason Carver, and Mason Wahlers placed third out of eight teams in a national automation contest. The team members earned the honor with their Flexible Learning Experience (FLEX) device. The team, which is

coached by computer science teacher Nancy Kiscadden, also won the Excellence in Engineering award in the competition.

National Guard Groups Win Awards All three Pennsylvania Air National Guard (PAANG) wings, part of Pennsylvania’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), earned 2018 United States Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards signifying them as exceptional performers. The award spans a twoyear period of wing performance.

All three wings have earned this award before, but this is the first time that the 111th Attack Wing in Horsham, the 171st Air Refueling Wing in Pittsburgh, and the 193rd Special Operations Wing in Middletown received the award the same year.

According to the Pennsylvania DMVA, the 193rd Special Operations Wing is home to the only airborne Military Information Support Operations broadcasting platform in the U.S. military.

The unit assists civilian authorities during natural disasters or

homeland security situations during peacetime and supports the Air Force Special Operations Command during wartime.

Award citation highlights include the wing successfully executing overseas contingency and domestic operations deployments while maintaining a high rate of readiness. The wing deployed 642 members across 27 nations. Wing members flew 386 combat missions and safely executed 3,000 broadcast hours.

Founded in 1747, the Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) comprises nearly 20,000 soldiers and airmen who reside in every county across the state. The PNG is part of the DMVA’s dual mission, which also includes supporting Pennsylvania’s nearly 800,000 veterans.
