Craft fair to benefit Middletown marching band program

The second annual Middletown Band Booster Association Craft Fair will take place at Middletown Area High School, 1155 N. Union St., Middletown, on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Last year for the inaugural craft show, more than 50 vendors offered items for sale. Organizers anticipate that number will double this year. “We had 58 vendors last year. People are still (registering), but we have 73 confirmed,” said Becky Carpenter, president of the association and craft show co-chair. “We had over 500 people attend, which is

pretty good for the first year.”

She said that not only will this year’s event feature additional vendors, but the show will encompass more space inside the high school. Crafters will be located in the school cafeteria and surrounding hallways.

“We did collect feedback from the vendors and the one thing they asked for was bigger spaces, so this year we did accommodate with larger spaces,” she stated. “And we are able to open up the entire first floor of the high school, so we can accommodate up to 114 booth spaces.”

Items for sale will include skin care products, specialty soaps, handmade candles, quilted and knitted items, dog and cat items,

baked goods, seasonal décor, woodworking, jewelry, fused glass and resin home décor.

Food items will also be available for sale. “One of our parents runs our concessions, and so there will be soup, hot dogs and breakfast items,” said Carpenter.

The craft fair is not juried; however, crafters must complete an application to participate. Nearly 100% of the vendors will offer handmade items.

Those who attend the show will also have an opportunity to win door prizes featuring craft items donated by the participating vendors.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the purchase of a wrap for the Blue Wave Marching Band’s

Hershey Christian Academy (HCA) will present its fifth annual Legacy of Light Celebration on Saturday, April 20, at the Hershey Free Church, 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown. A fundraiser for the school, the event will feature dinner, an auction, student performances and

the announcement of the Legacy of Light Award. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and festivities will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Those who attend the event will be able to view auction items in person, but bids will be accepted online at the auction website. Those unable to attend the event can still bid while at home. “When you come

Twenty-five dancers from the Paloma School of Irish Dance will take the stage at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey. The performance will feature soft- and hard-shoe dance pieces.

The program is part of the church’s 2024 Arts Alive Cultural Series. A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking and an elevator are available.

Founded in 2015 with a handful of students meeting in a kitchen,

the Paloma School of Irish Dance has grown into a school of more than 100 students with locations in Lancaster and Baltimore. Dancers have participated in hundreds of performances across central Pennsylvania, from events at nursing homes to concerts with Celtic bands from Ireland.

The troupe features Irish dancers who have won regional championships, are top dancers in North America and have qualified for the World Championships and other overseas

to the event, the advantage of being there is that everything can be viewed,” explained Cindy Kern, school administrator. “We will have all the items right there, but everyone can bid online.”

The auction will close at 8 p.m., and the winners will be announced live during the program.

For dinner, guests will be able to make their own burrito bowl, with both beef and chicken options, and a variety of toppings, including fresh salsa and guacamole. An assortment of homemade desserts and coffee will also be served.

Following dinner and musical and dance performances by HCA students, the Legacy of Light Award will be presented. “It was started to recognize someone within our community that has given and supported Christian education as a way to say thank you,” explained Renee Sattazahn, HCA marketing director, noting that recipients are nominated for the award. “It could be a teacher or someone invested in the school or even a community member

who is highly invested in Christian education.”

Last year, the winner was Wendy Moyer. Following the closure of the Lancaster Mennonite School’s Hershey Campus, a group of parents and teachers created HCA, which opened in 2019. “She was one of the founders of HCA who was a part of Lancaster Mennonite Hershey campus,” Sattazahn said. “When they closed the doors, Wendy rallied with a few teachers and others to reopen the school as HCA. And, within that summertime, they managed to get the school off the ground. By fall, they had the doors open in a matter of months.”

“Wendy was vice chair of the steering committee, and we met in her home many nights a week up to the wee hours of the morning,” Kern added.

Proceeds from the event will help the school underwrite efforts such as expanding its secondary education program, fine arts education, scholarships, community outreach and the capital campaign for the school campus.

“One of the special things about this year is that the theme is ‘Five Years and Still Glowing’ because it is our fifth year in operation,” said Sattazahn. “The school started with very short notice and very limited resources, but a handful of parents and teachers felt God’s call and they obeyed, even though it sounded impossible. In spite of all of the hurdles and obstacles they had to go through, here (we) are. We are growing; we have pre-K through 12th grade and last year we graduated our first senior.”

She added that the name of the event is based on HCA students following the Lord’s instructions in Ephesians 5:8, “Walk as children of light.”

new, larger band trailer that was purchased this past fall using the proceeds from last year’s craft fair.

“The wrap is needed to put both the Middletown Area School District and Blue Wave Marching Band information on the trailer so that it is visible to the community and showcases our program when we go to football games and band competitions,” stated Carpenter.

The proceeds from both ticket sales for the door prizes and concessions will go to the trailer wrap fund.

The Middletown Band Booster Association’s mission is to provide financial, logistical and moral support to the band programs of the Middletown Area School District.

The association predominantly comprises parents of both middle school and high school students who are band members, which includes marching band, concert band, jazz band, color guard and percussion ensemble. Matthew Landrum is the high school band director and Sam Fisher is the middle school band director.

For more information about the craft fair, visit www.facebook.com/ MAHSBandBooster Association. Additional craft vendors are welcome to participate, and the deadline to register is Wednesday, April 10. Interested vendors may visit the Facebook page or email mdtbbcraftfair@ gmail.com for more details.

Civil War Round Table to host meteorologist

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Thursday, April 11, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. Anyone wishing

to attend the lecture only should arrive no later than 7 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Pennsylvania State University professor of meteorology Jon M. Nese will discuss new findings on the weather conditions that prevailed during the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 and the impact weather had on the outcome of the battle. His presentation will be based on an article that he co-authored; appearing in Gettysburg Magazine, the article discussed the heat index during Pickett’s Charge.

Drawing on never-before-used data for a qualitative estimate of the combination of heat and humidity

during the battle, Nese will explain that the actual heat index on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, was as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, which led to heat exhaustion and heat stroke with prolonged exposure and physical activity. The heat caused many soldiers to faint and be carried from the battlefield insensible.

The lecture is free. There is a fee for the buffet dinner, payable at the door. Anyone wishing to attend the dinner should make reservations by noon on Monday, April 8, by contacting Brian Foster at hcwrt.member ship@gmail.com or 717-962-6122.

Program available to help youths complete basic education

The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its fifth class of cadets, which will begin the program in July 2024. The KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education and learn leadership, self-discipline, and responsibility to build a better life.

The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania.

The program is open to 16- to 18-year-old male and female Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free and free of felony convictions, and they must voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at FTIG followed by one year of mentorship back in the community.

The KSCA conducts two classes a year, one starting in mid-July and the other in mid-January. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Student honored in poster concert

Lower Dauphin Middle School seventh-grader Spencer Hock earned second place in a statewide poster contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Radon Division. Spencer’s poster featured a drawing of Frankenstein and the message, “Radon causes monstrous

lung cancer.”

Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can kill. The Surgeon General lists radon exposure as the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. This radioactive element comes from the ground and can easily enter homes and other buildings

through foundation openings, and the only way to detect the amount of radon present is to test. The poster contest was designed to inform Pennsylvanians of the danger of radon in their homes and raise their awareness of the importance of testing their homes for radon.

Spencer is a student in Elizabeth Kirman’s STEM class.

Workshop to focus on native plants

Penn State Extension will host a Choose Native Mini-Workshop live webinar on Tuesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. The mini workshop will focus on replacing invasive species with those native to Pennsylvania in landscapes and water gardens.

Landscaping and water gardening activities often lead to the unintended introduction and spread of invasive plant species to natural lands and waterways. Once established, invasive species can degrade natural habitats by outcompeting native species for space, light, and nutrients. Invasive species can impact the food web by altering the plant community and decreasing the diversity of plants
