The Palmyra Garden Club will meet on Monday, Feb. 17, at Rothermel-Finkenbinder Funeral Home, 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra, in the Community Meeting Room at noon. Bob Moyer and Wanda Livering, Master Gardeners with the Lebanon Penn State Extension, will present “Pruning ‘Ins and Outs,’” discussing the various pruning tools available to home gardeners, the care and use of these tools, and how to prune outdoor trees and shrubs. Lower Dauphin Middle School recently held its geography bee. After 13 rounds designed to test students’ geographical knowledge, the competition came down to two eighthgraders. Adrian Olweiler and Peter Otto sat face-to-face on the school’s stage. Four feet apart, they were given three questions whose answers were to be written on white boards and shown to the judges simultaneously.

After three championship questions, Peter was declared the school winner. For his efforts, he received a medal and the right to add his name to the school’s list of previous champions. A few weeks after the bee, he took the online qualifying exam and will hear in March if his score was high enough to make it to the state bee on Friday, March 27.

Spring Garden Series Planned The 15th annual Dauphin County Master Gardener Spring Workshop Series will take place on Saturdays, Feb. 29 through March 28, except March 14. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with programs running from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The workshops will be held at the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Center, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin.

Refreshments will be provided, and some participants will take home door prizes.

“Plentiful Plants, Principals of Propagation” will be presented by Master Gardener Pamela Shuman on Feb. 29. “Eat Your Yard” will be presented on March 7 by George Weigel, author, See Workshop Series pg 2

LIFT Preview Sessions Planned

Workshop Series from pg 1

Penn State Extension will offer two free informational sessions to preview the Lifelong Improvement through Fitness Together (LIFT) strength-training program at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, and Friday, March 13, at the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Center, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin.

Each session will include a presentation on the LIFT program and a demonstration of the exercises. The public is invited to attend.

LIFT (formerly called StrongWomen) is a strength-training and nutrition program for individuals who have been active or sedentary for the past few

Members of the Hershey Lions Club recently provided service to guests of the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. Hershey Lions Club members including Brent Schultz, John and Kelly Mallonee, Bob Watkins, Betty and Richard Briggs, Jo Kinkel, and Steve Gallerizzo served dinner to approximately 25 guests of the Ronald McDonald House during a January service project. Children staying at the house also received stuffed animal lions.

The combined effort of the Ronald McDonald House and the Hershey Lions Club was designed to help bring a care and comfort to the families.

The event marked the fourth year that members of the Hershey Lions Club have provided dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. Dinner this year was again prepared

by Dafnos Italian Grille of Hummelstown and consisted of baked ziti, meatballs, salad,

and rolls and butter.

The Hershey Lions Club has been continuously serving the residents of Derry Township for 75 years. Projects include eye exams and glasses for residents in need, local student scholarships, sponsorship of youth sports teams, and medical equipment assistance. Dance Classes from pg 1 Civil War Dance Classes will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 23 and March 15, at the National Civil War Museum, 1 Lincoln Circle, Reservoir Park, Harrisburg.

The classes will be conducted by members of the Victorian Dance Ensemble, the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation (CWDF). The CWDF is a nonprofit organization that entertains and educates through demonstrations, balls, and other activities. All proceeds from CWDF events are donated to historic preservation projects.

Participants will learn an assortment of formation dances from the very simple to more complex dances. CWDF members will be on hand to help with dance instruction and to answer questions about the civilian side of the Civil War and the Victorian era.

This spring’s dance classes are scheduled to prepare dancers for the 17th annual Civil War Preservation Ball, to be held in the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol in Har-

risburg on Saturday, March 28. Classes are ideal for re-enactors, historic site docents, teachers, homeschoolers, and anyone interested in vintage dancing.

People may attend one class or both.

They may attend alone or bring a partner.

Families are welcome. Everyday attire and comfortable shoes are suggested.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5 and then installed undesirable programs such as NFL 5.0, NBA 3.0, and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I’ve tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Appointments for free confidential tax preparation for low- to moderate-income seniors will be available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and readers may call Mohler Center to schedule an appointment. Federal 1040, Pennsylvania PA-40, local earned income tax, and Pennsylvania Property/Rent Rebates can be prepared. The service is not available for those filing a large number of stock transactions, casualty losses, and income from farms, businesses, or rental properties.

Participants should bring a photo ID and Social Security card, along with all statements defining wages (such as interest, dividends, pension, Social Security, gambling, and unemployment), Marketplace

health insurance forms (1095-A), documentation showing the original purchase price of sold assets, and a copy of last year’s tax return and supporting tax documentation. For property or rent rebates, participants should bring 2019 property tax bills marked paid or a rent certificate signed by their landlord that states the amount of rent paid in 2019.

On Friday, Feb. 21, Movies and Munchies will be offered at 11 a.m. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” starring Tom Hanks will be shown. The program is free, but reservations should be made by Tuesday, Feb. 18.

On Monday, March 2, a Lunch and Learn program will discuss the prevention and treatment of Lyme disease. Lunch will include stuffed shells, tossed salad, and dessert.

On Wednesday, March 4, during Mohler Take Out, the center will sell baked ham,

roasted red potatoes, and green beans. Hot meals will be available for purchase starting at 2 p.m. and continuing until the food is sold out. Meals will be sold on a firstcome, first-served basis.

The senior center has a group of volunteers who meet weekly to craft handmade dolls and bears for children at Hershey Medical Center. The group is seeking sponsors to support the cost of the doll and bear fill material. Interested readers may contact the center for details.

The South Hanover Historical Society is partnering with the Hummelstown Area Historical Society and South Hanover Township Administration to stage several events this year to celebrate the 175th anniversary of Union Deposit. The first event is a presentation about the history of the Union Canal.

It will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, in the Community Room of the South Hanover Township Building, 161 Patriot Way. Wade Seibert’s presentation will be about the construction, financing and operation of the canal, which ran through Dauphin, Lebanon and Berks counties. The economic impact of the canal on the village of Union Deposit will also be discussed.

Details about other planned events to celebrate Union Deposit’s 175th anniversary will be announced. Everyone is welcome, and there is no admission charge.

Penn State Extension Dauphin County will offer the FarmSense Farm Financial and Production Management workshop series from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 18, Feb. 25, March 3 and March 10. The program will take place at the Penn State Extension Dauphin County Office, 1451 Peters Mountain Road, Dauphin. Business owners, agricultural producers, and entrepreneurs are invited to attend the series, which is an introduction to managing the finances of agricultural businesses.

Penn State University Extension educator John P. Wodehouse will share information about cash flow statements, balance sheets, income statements, and financial analytics.

Course participants will learn how to use their financial records to calculate benchmarks and make informed managerial decisions for their business. They will also learn to build custom farm financial statements.

HCPAC Slates Auditions The Harrisburg Christian Performing Arts Center (HCPAC), 1000 S. Eisenhower Blvd., Middletown, is seeking adult performers for a fundraising event. Auditions will be held at HCPAC on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. Callbacks will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m.

Director Tom Blaisse invites all adult performers to audition for “Murder Rides Again,” a Wild West murder mystery comedy dinner show. Six actors - two women and four men - are needed. One of the men will play both a male role and a female role. The characters are the marshal and his deputy, a saloon girl, a gambler, a schoolmarm, a gunfighter and the gunfighter’s sister.

While adult performers will not be required to submit a registration fee, all cast members will be asked to commit to raising a set amount for the show from ticket sales and/or supporter ads. Proceeds will go toward HCPAC’s endeavors to provide quality theatrical experiences while training students and young adults with skills for the stage of life.

The chosen students are Daniel Little and Micah Nye, tenor saxophone; Tristan McQuiddy, Clare Raser and Isaac Fox, clarinet; Ethan Elicker, trumpet; Ian Bruce, trombone; and Christian Gingrich, string bass. Little and Bruce also qualified as first chair in their respective instruments.

At the end of the festival, the students will join with students from across the midstate to perform on Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.

The conductor of the culminating performance will be John Zarco, director of bands at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
