Local Boy Scout Earns All 137 Merit Badges

On Dec. 28, 2020, Alex LaVerdiere, a member of Boy Scout Troop 262 in Grantville, completed the requirements to earn the Horsemanship merit badge. With its completion, Alex marked a milestone - earning all of the 137 merit badges offered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Reportedly, fewer than 500 Scouts have earned every merit badge available since the BSA formed in 1910, out of approximately 2.5 million Scouts in the program.

In the BSA program, merit badges are a way for Scouts to learn about life skills, such as first aid, camping and swimming; hobbies, including wood carving, photography and

Food Bank Continues To Serve The Region

Church To Hold Pop-Up Drive First United Methodist Church (UMC), 64 W. Chocolate Ave., Hershey, will hold a Pop-Up Community Drive on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 9 to 11 a.m. Community members are invited to donate items at the event. The drive-through drop-off site will be the First UMC upper parking lot, accessible via the alley at the rear of church.

For the Hershey Food Bank, the church will collect nonperishable food items,

including tuna, canned meats, baked beans, canned peas, peanut butter, and canned pasta sauce (not in glass jars), along with laundry detergent, bars of soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and sanitizing wipes.

Community members may also donate items for homeless individuals served by Bethesda Mission. Needed items are blankets, warm socks, winter gloves, winter clothes, deodorant, and other toiletries.

Foundation Awards Scholarships During the fall 2020 term, 156 Central Penn College students were awarded $135,000 in scholarships by the college’s Education Foundation.

During the 2019-20 academic year, the foundation awarded $243,000 to 288 Central Penn students. Students can apply for scholarships in August and February. Awards are then given in the fall and spring

terms, respectively.

The nonprofit Education Foundation has distributed more than $2 million in scholarships to more than 2,300 students since being founded in 2004. More than 80% of Central Penn employees contribute annually to the foundation.

take a virtual tour of the “Dinosaur Mysteries” exhibit at the Maryland Science Center, led by the science center’s paleontologist. Participants will discover how fossils are found and what fossils can indicate about dinosaurs’ life cycles, diets, behaviors, and ecosystems. After the tour, there will be an opportunity to do two hands-on activities in one’s own home.

Miniature Horse Event Planned The adventure course will be available for two separate sessions from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 6 and 13. Along the way, children will learn skills in horse handling, problem solving, healthy communication, and volunteer service.

Now that he is 18, he plans to continue his Scouting career as an adult leader. “(Scouting) helps you in every aspect of your life,” he shared.

Alex, who graduated a year early in June 2020 from Commonwealth Charter Academy, plans to attend St. Joseph’s College of Maine to study science and business administration. “Someday I would like to start my own company,” he stated. “I am excited for the new chapter in my life.”

The week’s theme this year is “Faith. Excellence. Service.” “SSBVM takes pride in nurturing loving and productive citizens who care about the condition of their communities,” said Kennedy, noting that the school’s celebration had to be adapted this year because of the coronavirus pandemic with more focus on service projects.

Alex said that his favorite merit badges to earn involved scuba diving, whitewater rafting and snow sports. His most difficult was Bugling. “I had to learn (to play the bugle) from scratch; I took six months of lessons,” he said. “I had to learn 10 songs and make up one of my own. It is the least-earned merit badge.”

Alex earned merit badges at BSA summer camps, during activities with his troop and on his own time, as well as at local “merit badge college” events. For example, he earned his Dentistry merit badge at merit badge college after speaking with a local dentist who was there as a merit badge counselor.

Alex displays his badges on his merit badge sash, which weighs about five pounds. “I really want to thank my family, the leaders and the counselors that have helped me achieve this goal,” he stated.

Hi, everybody! OK, who still has up their Christmas lights?

I even still have up my fully decorated Christmas tree and train platform. My hubby and I are trying to stretch out as much Christmas happiness as possible. But I promise I will take my tree down by February. Not sure about the outside lights though. Since my lights are all blue and white, they will just be my winter decorations now.

When Anne Marie McAlester became executive director of Hope Within Ministries in October 2019, she started thinking about changing the sign outside the Elizabethtown organization.

“I felt it didn’t communicate everything we are about,” she said. So last fall, she applied for a community awareness grant through Hershey Medical Center and received funding for a new sign.

The sign, at 4748 East Harrisburg Pike, now reads “Hope Within Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center.” “ We are a free primary medical care clinic, and we’ve been offering that since 2006,” McAlester noted. “In 2014, we added counseling, and we hoped to add dental in (early 2020), but COVID pushed that back until we finally opened our dental clinic in July 2020.”

McAlester said the nonprofit provides primary care

for uninsured, low-income people in Lancaster, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. “These are people who work parttime hours without benefits or people who have lost their jobs or are unemployed,” she explained.

Counseling is offered on a sliding-scale payment plan and is open to anyone, with no income qualifications.

All medical services are provided by volunteers, including a volunteer psychiatrist who comes in twice a month.

“We use a battalion of volunteer medical providers who work full time somewhere else but volunteer here a few hours a month,” McAlester noted. “ We use graduate students under the supervision of licensed counselors for our mental health counseling.”

She added that the organization hopes to expand its dental clinic but is in need of more volunteer dentists.

Over the last year, Hope Within has seen a rising need for its services.

“Across the board, we’ve seen huge increases. We’re seeing people who have lost their jobs, people who are afraid of losing their jobs.

We’ve seen a major spike in

requests for services. We have people who can no longer afford insulin or asthma medication,” McAlester remarked.

“These medications are very expensive.”

The organization typically holds four fundraisers throughout the year, but had to cancel all of them in 2020.

Hope Within is planning a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, she noted, with more information coming soon on the organization’s Facebook page.

“We’ll ask people to donate to us, and in return, we’ll send a personalized card out on their behalf,” McAlester explained.

Along with financial constraints, the organization lost a lot of volunteer office staff and a few doctors, many of whom are elderly and were worried about the risk of continuing to volunteer during a pandemic.

Despite these challenges, McAlester remains hopeful that Hope Within will continue to thrive.

“We are a Christian ministry, and our faith is strong,” she stated. “We rely on our faith, and we have found that God has been faithful. Even though this past year has been hard, we have surpassed whatever goals we have set.”

Volunteers are needed to help pick up over 40,000 live balsam wreaths for disposal. One wreath was placed on each grave during Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 19, 2020, made possible by sponsorships from thousands of people.

Returning the cemetery to its pristine state is a part of the Wreaths Across America’s program and mission to honor veterans.

Volunteers are asked to attend an 8 a.m. process briefing on the plaza of the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial located at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Parking will be limited in order to clear paths for dump trucks and trailers.

Annville. A shuttle bus will begin operation at 7:30 a.m., and helpers will be returned to their vehicles after cleanup is complete. Anyone arriving to help later than 8 a.m. will be instructed to report to the memorial for directions.

There is no minimum age for participants, as the cleanup may serve to teach future generations about honoring veterans. Children should be with their adults at all times.

Volunteers should prepare for the weather. They should dress warmly in clothes that may get soiled and wear comfortable shoes. This is a very physical project, so community members should use their judgment when deciding whether to participate. No animals except service dogs are allowed on the cemetery

tarps, and plastic toboggans/sleds.

The project requires lowprofile dump trucks, dump trailers, and trucks with low and long beds only. People should not bring triaxle trucks, pickup trucks, ATVs or motorized trail vehicles.

Boy Scout Troop 97 of Middletown sought to face the challenges of 2020 with all the qualities named in the Boy Scout Oath and Law, and the outcome was a year of accomplishments and celebrations.

To start 2020, Scoutmaster Bill Lee congratulated Owen Wealand and Cole Carlson on becoming Eagle Scouts, the highest Scouting rank, on Jan. 11. In February, the troop had its annual Klondike campout at Hidden Valley Scout Reservation (HVSR), where participants engaged in team-building exercises and a snowless sled race. Elections for new Scout leaders were held, community services hours were volunteered at the Londonderry Fire Company’s fish fry, and Junior Leadership Training was started by Lee prior to the pandemic’s impacting the troop’s calendar of events.

Although scheduled activities had to be canceled due to the pandemic, virtual meetings began and Junior Leadership Training resumed. Scouts

VA Medical Center Hires Lightburn The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that following a national search, Jaconda Lightburn, Ph.D., has been appointed as the associate director/chief operating officer at Lebanon VA Medical Center effective Jan. 17. She replaces Jeffrey A. Beiler, who was appointed as the executive director of the Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center in October.

Lightburn is currently the assistant medical center director at the Veterans Health System of the Ozarks in Fayetteville, Ark., and led the health care system’s response to the national pandemic.

experiences at several VA health care facilities including acting assistant director at the Washington DC VA Medical Center and acting assistant/associate director at the Charleston VA Medical Center in South Carolina. Lightburn is a retired veteran with over 24 years of distinguished service. She began her service as a bioenvironmental engineering technician for the Air Force, performing industrial hygiene and environmental management assignments. After eight years of active duty, she

joined the Air Force Reserves and began working at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) as a faculty instructor, teaching environmental and safety courses and performing environmental research in medical facilities throughout South Carolina.

Her experience also includes being the marine/environmental education coordinator for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Following her work with MUSC, she transferred to the Air Force as a civil servant, where she worked as a safety manager/environmental scientist managing the solid waste program, a qualified recycling program, the envi-

ronmental audit program and green procurement prior to joining the VA. A native of Virginia, Lightburn holds a doctorate in health administration, a Master of Science in environmental pollution control from Pennsylvania State University, a bachelor’s degree in vocational education and two associate degrees. Lightburn is also a graduate of VA’s Healthcare Leadership Development Program, the USA Executive Potential Program, and the VA certified Mentor program. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Lightburn is the mother of three grown children and the grandmother of four children.

To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves.

This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus food pantries.

Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public

schools’ food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program.

Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points converted into Grocery Dollars via the Giant or Martin’s app, $1 will be donated to the initiative, and customers will still be able to use the grocery dollars for their own savings on their grocery bill. The Giant Company will match every Choice point converted up to an additional $500,000 donated through this new initiative.
