HCPAC Opens Camp Registration This summer, students entering first through eighth grades are invited to attend one or more of the summer theater camps run by Harrisburg Christian Performing Arts Center (HCPAC). Each one-week camp will be held on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the camp production performance held on Friday at 7 p.m.

HCPAC theater camps offer opportunities for students to explore creating characters, memorizing lines or simply becoming familiar with using a script. The camps are intended to help students more fully develop life skills such as oral communication, teamwork, commitment, self-discipline and healthy self-image as they work together to produce an end-of-camp production.

Field Of Screams Supports RMHC School Posts Honor Roll

The fifth annual culinary competition was the centerpiece of Military, Veterans and Their Families Day, a full day of events honoring veterans for their service to the country.

Marlon O’Neil Haughton, Navy culinary specialist first class, enlisted the aid of news personalities Corinne Lillis and Shannon Murphy. The Navy team was pitted against Army Sgt. Pete O. Linton, advanced culinary NCO at the Army Executive Dining Facility, and his teammates, news personalities Ali Lanyon and James Crummel, in an Iron Chef-style cook-off.

Teams were given 30 minutes to prepare the most appealing dish, utilizing PA Preferred sourced ingredients.

Each team received a bin with ingredients, including proteins, starches, and vegetables, and a common pantry of ingredients, including basic grocery items, spices and herbs, to work with. Teams were tasked with preparing four plates, one for each judge. The teams worked from four-burner induction cooktops outfitted

with appliances and cookware.

Final dishes were evaluated by judges Barry Crumlich, executive chef at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence; John Moeller, former White House chef and author of “Dining at the White House - From the President’s Table to Yours”; Greg Magee Jr., regional vice president of customer care at Northeast Division - Keystone Region of Comcast NBCUniversal; and Sarah Dachos, deputy director at Farmer Veteran Coalition.

The Pennsylvania Farm Show draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Harrisburg each year for a mid-winter celebration of Pennsylvania agriculture. It is known as the largest indoor agricultural exposition in the nation, featuring nearly 12,000 competitive exhibits, including more than 5,200 animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibits and hundreds of educational events. Field of Screams presented a check in the amount of $15,020 to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) on Dec. 12, 2019. Of the donation, $11,520 will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania and $3,500 will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeastern PA. Field of Screams works with a number of charities every year and has been partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities since 2009. Since this time, Field of Screams has donated $115,540 to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The programs are offered at no cost to the families, and RMHC relies on the generosity of the community to be able to keep its services free for families that need them. As the cost to keep a family together for one night at the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey is approximately $100, the Field of Screams donation to RMHC of Central Pennsylvania represents more than 110 family overnight stays.

KDC: Cooperative Solutions has been offered an opportunity to share office space with one of its founding member nonprofit organizations in its new office space in Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania Association Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), just relocated to 1007 N. Front St., Suite 3S, Harrisburg. The space includes one large private office, a shared kitchen and three bathrooms, shared use of a conference room and plenty of parking spaces on the riverfront property.

In conversations preceding the move, KDC executive director Peggy Fogarty and PASA

executive director Hannah Smith-Brubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally.

Smith-Brubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16.

KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.

Free Throw Contest Set Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the Palmyra Knights of Columbus’s annual free throw shooting contest. The local competition will be held on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Palmyra Area Middle School gymnasium.

At this free, annually sponsored event, winners will progress

The St. James Players will hold auditions for “The Enchanted Book Shop” from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and Thursday, Jan. 30.

Community Chorus Seeks Members The Elizabethtown Community Chorus seeks new members age 15 and up of all voice parts and singing abilities.

The chorus rehearses on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:20 p.m. in Leffler Chapel Musser Auditorium on the campus of Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive.

Rehearsals began on Jan. 14, and the last day to join is Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Mid Penn Bank Seeks Scholarship Applicants Mid Penn Bank is seeking high school applicants for its Anna Woodside Scholarship.

The scholarship will recognize five outstanding Pennsylvania high school seniors, awarding each $1,000 for college tuition costs. The scholarship recognizes students who exhibit traits similar to those displayed by Woodside throughout her life, including commitment to education and the community.

Interested students may complete and submit an Anna Woodside Scholarship application. An official high school

transcript, a community service list, SAT scores and an essay must also be submitted. In order to be considered, applicants must reside in Mid Penn Bank’s service area, which includes Berks, Bucks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Fayette, Lancaster, Luzerne, Montgomery, Northumberland, Schuylkill and Westmoreland counties.

The Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence, a free business resource for Lebanon County, is hosting its inaugural Entrepreneurial Pitch competition. The application deadline has been extended to Friday, Jan. 31. Entrepreneurs will compete to win seed money to start their dream business. Two winners will each receive a grant and packages of business services. There is no cost to apply or participate.

Survivor To Talk About Holocaust “Memories of a Child of the Holocaust” will be presented by Dr. Inge Auerbacher on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. The program will be held at Red Land High School, 560 Fishing Creek Road, Lewisberry.

The Missy Raines Trio will present a concert sponsored by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society (SFMS) on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appalachian Brewing Company’s Abbey Bar, 50 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg.

Missy Raines has been named International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Bass Player of the Year for 2019, the seventh time she has won the title. She is touring with Ben Garnett on acoustic guitar and George Jackson on fiddle.

The bluegrass instrumentalist previously played with The Claire Lynch Band, Eddie Adcock, Josh Graves, Jim Hurst, Kenny Baker, and Jesse McReynolds. She has also broken new ground as a songwriter with her latest recording, “Royal Traveller.” The album digs into Raines’ family life and her upbringing in West Virginia. It features previous and current members of her live band and cameos from other bluegrass greats such as Stuart Duncan and Tim O’Brien.

Russian Musicians Plan Concert the United States, she has performed many solo concerts, as well as ensemble pieces and duets with other musicians.

She has performed with the Hershey Symphony Orchestra and on WITF. Originally from Kazakhstan, Burakovsky studied at St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music and then graduated with top honors from Musical College N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov of Saint Petersburg. He earned his master’s degree in 2011. He has performed in concert halls across Russia and with many well-known Russian orchestras. Since coming to the United States, he has continued to perform and teach privately.

Winter Shelter Training Slated Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) will host another winter shelter training on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, for individuals interested in volunteering.

The Elizabethtown winter shelter operations are underway. ECHOS is in its fifth year of hosting a shelter in Elizabethtown. Volunteers help

oversee operations of the shelter. To efficiently and effectively run the shelter, 90 volunteers are needed each week.

In addition to completing the training, all new volunteers must provide updated clearances prior to volunteering in the shelter.

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 600 S. 12th St., Lebanon, will host a concert on Friday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. The event will be presented by Applause … Memorable Music at St. Andrews.

The concert will feature the Russian Duet, consisting of Russian solo artists Elena Lebedeva Millar, classical pianist, and Nikita Burakovsky, violinist. The program will include Beethoven’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 5 in F Major “Spring Sonata” in four movements, Brahms’ Rhapsody in G Minor Op. 79 No. 2 (Piano Solo), Freisler’s “Prelude and Allegro,” and Schnittke’s “Shite in Old Style.”

Millar began her formal classical piano lessons at Polyakov Music School for Children in Moldova, where she was born. She received degrees in solo classical piano performance and music theory from Rachmaninov College of Music. While earning her master’s degree, she participated in local and foreign competitions, where she received many awards. Since moving to

Hi, everyone! Anyone who knows me knows I love animals, especially dogs! I have four dogs. They are all getting up there in age. The oldest will be 17 this year, and the youngest will be 12! So my furbabies are pretty much older than I am now … but they still are spunky and sweet and have unique personalities. I wish we all could be more like my dogs. They don’t complain, they all get along (with just the occasional little spat), they don’t judge, and they offer unconditional love! Wouldn’t the world be such a better place?

Excerpts From a Cat’s Diary: Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had

hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a “good little hunter” I am. Idiots!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of “allergies.” I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow - but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now ...

Mental Health First Aid Training WellSpan Philhaven will provide a certified and clinically proven mental health first aid training to interested persons at no cost in Luther Hall at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located on the corner of North Union and Spring streets, Middletown, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 9 a.m. The eight-hour training will equip people who may not possess mental health clinical training to learn to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use. Upon completion of this course, individuals will be able to help a friend, family member, or colleague in need of assistance.

In the same way that CPR helps people assist an individual having a medical emergency, mental health first aid helps people assist someone experiencing a mental health-related problem or crisis even if they have no clinical training.

Seating is limited, and advance registration is required by contacting Don Hossler at 717-944-2250.

Food Pantry Services Middletown Interfaith Food Pantry is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The food pantry is located in the Borough of Royalton at 201 Wyoming St. (the old Bob & Romaine’s grocery store). To be eligible for the pantry’s services, people must live within the Middletown area and have a ZIP code of 17057.

Not only does the pantry provide food,

but, with the help of the Hershey Medical Center outreach staff, it also monitors high blood pressure, provides flu shots, and provides nutrition information on a one-on-one basis. Located with the pantry is the Tri-County Community Action with Erica Segarra as the self-sufficiency case manager. She works with clients one-on-one with personal situations. In the near future, the food pantry will offer income tax services.

Readers who feel the need for the food pantry’s assistance in any way may call 717-944-5668.

Care-A-Van In addition to the above, the Interfaith Food Pantry offers a Care-A-Van, operating Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Calling hours are Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and noon at 717-743-0788. Individuals should schedule three days in advance.

This service is for transporting elderly 17057 residents to medical appointments, pharmacy pickup, light grocery shopping, and the Royalton Senior Center. The service is offered to clients of the Middletown Food Pantry on Fridays only; Fridays are reserved for Middletown Food Bank patrons only. This service is not wheelchair-accessible.

Recipe of the Week Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Shells This is a “touchdown” for football Sundays! For a thicker stuffing, drain ricotta overnight. Serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping.

Ingredients: 1 pound ground chicken 1/4 cup butter 1 cup hot sauce (pick your favorite; I like Frank’s Hot Sauce) 1 16-ounce container whipped ricotta cheese cooking spray 1 16-ounce package jumbo pasta shells 1 8-ounce package shredded cheddarMonterey Jack cheese blend salt and ground black pepper to taste Directions: 1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground chicken in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease.

2. Melt butter in the skillet with the cooked chicken. Stir hot sauce into the chicken mixture and remove from heat.

3. Squeeze as much moisture from the ricotta cheese using a cheese cloth or paper towels; put drained cheese in a large bowl. Add chicken mixture to the cheese and stir. Refrigerate until completely chilled, 3 to 4 hours.

4. Preheat oven to 375 F. Prepare a 13by-9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

5. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook pasta shells in the boiling water until cooked through but firm to the bite, about 10 minutes; drain. Rinse with cold water until no longer hot; drain.

6. Spoon chicken mixture into cooked pasta shells and arrange into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle cheddar-Monterey Jack cheese blend over the stuffed shells; season with salt and pepper.

7. Bake in preheated oven until the cheese is slightly melted and the stuffing is hot in the middle, 15 to 20 minutes.

Tip of the Week Instead of using a dryer sheet, ball up one or a few sheets of tin foil and toss in the dryer. This removes the static electricity from your clothes and one can last up to a year.

Local Cuisine from pg 1 Library And Rotary Announce Feb. 7 Event

Restaurants, caterers, breweries, bakeries, wineries, chocolatiers, and other food and beverage vendors from throughout the region will be vying for prizes and bragging rights at A Taste of Western Lancaster County. The 12th annual celebration will take place from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

Proceeds from the 21-and-older event will benefit the library and the service projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club.

Throughout all three levels of the library, people may sample appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages from local businesses serving the greater Elizabethtown area. Elizabethtown Public Library staff

member Meghan Phillips, who is co-chairing the event with Rotarian Kevin Engle, explained that attendees will each receive tickets to vote for their favorites in various categories by placing a ticket in the container at the vendor of their choice.

“We have a lot of favorites coming back this year,” noted Phillips. Winners at last year’s event included The Gathering Place for Best of Show and Best Appetizer, Fuego Latino for Best Entrée, Cox Brewing Company for Best Beverage, and Spence Candies for Best Dessert.

“It’s a lot of fun because the returning vendors know what to expect now and are very competitive,” said library staff member Aimee Nelson, who has been on the planning committee for five years.

Live music will be performed by local artists on two levels of the library, adding to the ambiance of the event, which is referred to by many as “an Elizabethtown reunion.”

“It’s a really solid partnership between

the library and the Rotary,” noted Phillips, adding that numerous people throughout the community pitch in to make the event a success.

On the day of the event, members of the Elizabethtown Area High School football team volunteer their time by coming in to the library to remove extra furniture and rearrange things as needed - turning what could be a long, labor-intensive undertaking into a quick project. “They’re the unsung heroes, because they’re not here on the night of the event, but they really help to make it all possible,” Phillips remarked.

Elizabethtown DeMolay members faithfully volunteer their time by running the coat check each year at A Taste of Western Lancaster County.

“The biggest way to support the event is to come,” Phillips added. “We’ve sold

out of tickets early for the past few years.”

CATRA Plans Special Event All children ages 8 to 12 and their parents or guardians are invited to participate in the HighHOPES Miniature Horse Challenge at Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association (CATRA), Station Road, Grantville, on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The course is designed to promote healthy choices, effective communication skills, problem-solving and volunteerism using equine-assisted (horse-assisted)

Children’s Choir Opens Enrollment The Elizabethtown Children’s Choir, a nonauditioned choir for children in grades three through seven, has opened enrollment.

The ensemble meets and rehearses on the campus of Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. on Mondays beginning Jan. 27.

The ensemble focuses on music literacy and vocal development. It

is directed by Elizabethtown College music education students, overseen by Dr. Matthew Fritz.
