Hershey Lions Club Supports Community ith traditional meetings, service projects, and fundraisers paused due to COVID-19, the Hershey Lions Club continues to support the residents of Derry Township, as well as others across the United States and globally. Recently, the Hershey Lions Club supported the local Cocoa Packs Holiday Toy Drive. The initiative helps disadvantaged children receive Christmas presents. To support the effort, club members and friends donated new, unwrapped gifts along with monetary donations worth more than $500. “The Hershey Lions Club strives to collaborate with other local organizations to help Derry Township
W
residents,” shared current club president Steve Gallerizzo. “Together, we can strengthen youth development and the community we serve by working cooperatively to bring about significant change.” Earlier in December, the Hershey Lions Club also arranged to provide meals for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House during December and January. This marks the fifth year that the club has provided this service for the families, whose children are receiving treatment at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center - Penn State Children’s Hospital. Due to COVID-19, club members will not be able to serve the meals as in the past.
Dinners will again be prepared by Dafnos Italian Grille of Hummelstown.

Linn Wins Spelling Bee The girls were among the school’s top 18 spellers competing in the bee. The other spellers were Jacob Sholder, Lucia Shertzer, Ben Velez, Neli Rodriguez, Olivia Fureman, Silas Wright, Nova Mayer, Dylan Kreiss, Riley Gonzalez, Alexis Stump, Lily Mayer, Keaton Wagner, Riley Beers, Kameron Flynn, and Maddy Fureman. Due to COVID-19, the bee looked different this year with the spellers wearing masks and sitting 6 feet apart on the stage. They only removed their masks to spell and then wiped down the microphone
with disinfectant wipes after their turn. There was no audience for the bee, although it was livestreamed by the high school’s Falcon Broadcast Channel so parents could watch their students spell. The students will next take a semifinal written test in the hope of earning a spot in the WITF Central Pennsylvania Spelling Bee, which will be held in February. Top spellers on the written test will participate in the televised the WITF Grand Championship Spelling Bee, which then can lead to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
