Ben And Tim Day Goes Virtual The 29th annual Ben and Tim Day, featuring a 5K run and a 1-mile fun run/walk, will be held virtually this year.

Participants are encouraged to complete the distance at any time and any location on Saturday, Aug. 22, when Ben and Tim Day had originally been scheduled to take place. Those who have preregistered may pick up their T-shirts from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, at Hershey High School (HHS), 550 Homestead Road, Hershey. No extra shirts will be ordered. T-shirts will be mailed to those who live outside of the Hershey/Hummelstown area.

Proceeds benefit the Tim Russell and Ben Yupcavage Memorial Scholarship Program, which is named for two HHS athletes who were killed in an automobile accident on Jan. 23, 1992. Candidates for scholarships must be seniors at HHS and apply through the high school website. Ben and Tim Day awarded $21,000 in scholarships to 21 members of the Hershey High School Class of 2020.

The Hershey Lions Club Foundation will hold its 31st annual Henry F. Nixon Memorial Amateur Golf Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Manada Golf Club, 609 Golf Lane, Grantville.

The event will feature a fourperson scramble format with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration will take place from noon to 12:45 p.m. The registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, use of a golf cart, door prizes, and a catered dinner.

Event chair Lion Pete Van Zandt of the Hershey Lions Club is looking forward to this year’s tournament. “We appreciate the support that we receive each year from our sponsors and players, many of whom have been part of this event for many years,” he related. “Now more than ever, their support allows us to provide assistance to many people and organizations.”

Proceeds will benefit projects of the foundation, including eye exams and glasses, sponsorship of youth sports teams, support for the Hershey Food Bank, student backpacks, and student scholarship awards. Since its inception, the event has raised approximately $150,000.

Like it has with so many other events, the coronavirus has disrupted fair season. For some people, that simply means fewer milkshakes consumed or carnival games enjoyed. However, for the youths who raise animals to exhibit and subsequently sell, the cancellation of fairs means a significant loss of income.

“Most of the livestock had been bought before COVID. These kids have all this money wrapped up in these animals,” said cattleman Jevin Kready, who noted that because specific finish weights are required, livestock must be sold within the timeframes set at the time of purchase.

The Kready family has years of experience in raising, showing, and selling livestock. As a 4-H and FFA member, Jevin began showing beef cattle in middle school, occasionally raising some pigs as well, and he has been in charge of the livestock show at the Manheim Farm Show for a number of years. Jevin’s wife, Courtney, currently shows animals at local fairs, and their oldest child, Waylon, first entered the show ring at age 5. Waylon, who will turn 8 this month, has exhibited goats and pigs, and he wants to add a steer next year.

Library System Offers Online Programs The Dauphin County Library System has planned two online programs.

Teenagers may hone their storytelling skills, think creatively, and work together to defeat villains each week at Dungeons and Dragons. On Fridays, Aug. 7 to 28, at 3 p.m., participants will meet fellow adventurers on the library system’s Discord channel. All sessions will take place virtually on Discord making it necessary for all adventurers to have a computer or mobile device to join.

The majority of the bolts in a typical fabric store will be filled with natural fibers like cotton or manufactured fibers like polyester. However, there is usually at least one section dedicated to wool, and garments made from those fabrics are the focus of the annual Make It With Wool contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association.

The contest is designed to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. “Wool is a wonderful fiber to work with,� said director Linda Siegel of Lebanon. “You can steam and mold it into shape.�

She noted that wool fabric is not always derived from sheep’s wool, and it can be used for more than heavy winter coats. “I enjoy finding lightweight wools I can wear year-round,� Linda said. “I made a light wool crepe black dress that I can wear with sandals in the summer and feel comfortable.�

Linda entered the Make It With Wool contest for the first time as a 4-H member in 1972.

She still has the suit made from fabric striped with acid blue, teal green, and cream. “There was a lot of competition,� she recalled. “A lot of people were sewing in the ’70s.�

Home sewing has declined in popularity since then, but it is seeing a resurgence. Linda has been actively promoting sewing

by serving as a 4-H leader for the past two decades. Additionally, she has encouraged the sewing passion of her daughter, Rachel.

In about 2002 at age 13, Rachel won the state 4-H fashion revue with a Melton wool coat and subtly striped pants and then won the state Make It With Wool contest with the same outfit.

That made Rachel eligible to compete at the national Make It With Wool event. “She didn’t place there, but she learned,� Linda said. “From then on, she sewed with wool in 4-H and challenged herself.�

Before she turned 25 and matriculated into the adult age division, Rachel competed at the national event seven times. As an adult, she has had one outfit win and two others place. “Rachel got to see a lot of the country that way,� Linda said. “Sometimes she knew who the judges were, like the year she was in the elevator with (television sewing instructor) Sandra Betzina and (couture sewing expert) Claire Shaeffer was a judge.�

At least six of Linda’s 4-H students have competed nationally, and she has been a state winner twice. She accepted the position of state director this year after the previous director, Tammy Hemmerly, moved to Florida. “I enjoy organizing things (and) helping people learn new things.

I hope I can get more people interested in working with wool,� Linda commented, adding

that she hopes to get more youths involved. “I encourage people to try it, even if it’s just a simple skirt or a knitted garment that makes them happy,� Linda commented. “Don’t choose (a pattern) beyond your skill level. Start with what you’ve made (before) and add a few new skills.�

Linda recommended buying good-quality fabric that is more forgiving, such as flannel or a light or medium tweed, in colors that the sewist enjoys or complements their skin tone. Fasteners should be appropriate - e.g., an invisible zipper is most likely not appropriate for a heavier wool and the seams should have some kind of finish. To avoid creating a shine on the fabric, always use a press cloth. Towels wrapped around rolled-up newspapers can be used in place of a sleeve roll when pressing curved portions of a garment.

The contest is open to anyone age 8 and older. All participants must select, construct, and model their own garments unless entering the “made for others� category. All garments must have been completed in the current year. Every fashion fabric or yarn used must be at least 60% wool or specialty wool fiber, which includes alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna. There is a cost to participate; however, every participant will receive 1.5 yards of wool fabric and a variety of sewing notions such as pressing

hams and books on tailoring.

Friday, Sept. 4, has been set as the deadline to register for the competition, and entries must be received no later than Tuesday, Oct. 20. Typically, the contest is held in Harrisburg in conjunction with the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, but that event has been canceled. Labor Day activities at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, will take place on Monday, Sept. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees may bring their own blanket or chair.

They wrote the letters home and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and walked my daughter down the aisle. Yet, they were strong and sure when I dug my buddy out of a foxhole and lifted a plow off of my best friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foot.

They have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These hands are the mark of where Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ.â&#x20AC;?

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandpaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the faces of my children, grandchildren, and spouse, I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

Recipe of the Week Slow Cooker Chicken Wings (Great slow-cooker meal to keep your kitchen cool during these hot summer days!)

Ingredients 1/2 cup soy sauce 8-ounce Coca-Cola (Use regular Coke because Diet Coke does not have real sugar in it) About two dozen chicken wings Directions 1. Pour 1/2 cup of soy sauce and 8 ounces of Coca-Cola with about a dozen chicken drumsticks in the good old trusty slow cooker and set it on low for 6 hours.

2. Drain all of the liquid from the slow cooker into a sauce pan. Cook over medium heat to reduce the liquid enough so that it forms a nice glaze. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to reduce it until the liquid is considerably thicker than when you removed it from the slow cooker.

3. Dump the chicken wings in a bowl and pour the new glaze over the wings. Dee-lish!

Joke of the Week At a local bar in downtown Centerville, Minn., the owner was so sure that his bartender was the strongest man around that he offered a standing $1,000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and then hand the lemon to the patron.

Anyone who could squeeze two more drops of juice out of it would win the money. Many people had tried over the years: weightlifters, longshoremen, etc., but nobody had ever been able to do it.

One day, this scrawny little fellow came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit.

He sat down, ordered a glass of draft, and started looking around the bar. After reading the sign on the wall about the lemon challenge, he said in a small voice: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was just reading your sign, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to try the bet.â&#x20AC;?

After the laughter had died down, the bartender said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;OK...â&#x20AC;?

He grabbed a lemon and squeezed the heck out of it. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little fellow.

But the crowdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s laughter turned to total silence â&#x20AC;Ś as the man clenched his little fist around the lemon, and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the guy his $1,000 and then asked the little man, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do you mind if I ask what you do for a living?

Are you a lumberjack, a weightlifter, or what?â&#x20AC;?

The little fellow quietly replied, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I work for the IRS.â&#x20AC;?

Fly High, Sheeba Sheeba Keiffer, 58, of Royalton, passed away March 29, at UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg. Sheebaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s loving husband, Tom Keiffer of Royalton, wanted everyone to know since many have been cooped up due to the pandemic; he feels a lot of people didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know. Sheeba was born July 10, 1961, the daughter of the late Cliff and Helen Flowers Reed. Sheeba worked as a custodian for the Middletown Area School District until her retirement. She is survived by her husband, Thomas L. Keiffer Sr.; a son, Thomas L. Keiffer Jr.; a Thank You daughter, Sheena R. Hileman; Thanks to my pal Francis grandchildren Callie Hileman, Kasper of Middletown for the joke!

Tyron, and Terran; a sister, You have the best jokes, Francis!

Sheila Reed; and brothers Craig Reed and Carl Reed.

The Giant Company announced on July 31 that more than $1 million was raised as part of its summer campaign in support of local Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. The campaign, which kicked off June 1, marks the highest fundraising effort for the organization in the history of the company.

A partner of the nonprofit organization for almost 25 years, Giant has recently introduced several new ways for customers to support their local CMN Hospital beyond making a donation during checkout. Customers can now make donations by rounding up their purchase at self-checkout, donating CHOICE Rewards points and purchasing special reusable bags with a portion of each sale going to the charity. The company will continue raising funds for CMN Hospitals through the end of August.

In March, to help provide assistance for the youngest members of the community during the coronavirus pandemic, Giant

donated $250,000 to support COVID-19 mitigation efforts.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Children’s National Hospital, Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital each received $50,000.

The Giant Company is known as one of the top 15 fundraisers in the country for CMN Hospitals.

Customers, team members and vendor partners have donated more than $48 million over the past 23 years in support of children’s health at local CMN Hospitals, including CHOP; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; and WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W. Va.

Playhouse Sets Workshop Series Hershey Area Playhouse, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, is expanding its programming to include virtual opportunities for the summer, including a Broadway workshop series.

The Playhouse will host Give Back to Broadway on Monday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. This event is the first in a series of workshops that will pair the Playhouse with professionals from Broadway.

Through the series, participants will have access to experts in a variety of fields, including orchestra, costumes, acting, dance, and more. In the online sessions, Broadway professionals will share what they do, how they learned and honed their skills and how young people can pursue a career.

The workshops will also include a question-and-answer time.

The first guest will be Hershey’s Will Curry, who has had a career as a conductor, violist, violinist, educator and orchestrator. Curry recently worked as music director and conductor of the “Miss Saigon” national tour and previously held the positions of violist and assistant conductor with the Broadway revivals of “My Fair Lady,” “Miss Saigon,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Les Misérables.”

Curry previously worked as the associate conductor for the Mirvish’s “Les Misérables” and the assistant conductor/concertmaster for the “Les Misérables” national tour.

Necklace Sale To Benefit Young Heart Patient A local resident has launched a fundraiser to benefit Jaxson Dukes, 2, and his family. Jaxson is scheduled to undergo his third heart surgery to correct a congenital heart defect.

Leidra Horton, a lifelong Palmyra resident who has two young children, is selling sterling silver necklaces with proceeds going to the

Dukes family. Horton sources the supplies, assembles the necklaces, and sells the finished product. Each necklace is made of all sterling silver components and features a heart cutout on an adjustable 18- to 20inch cable chain.

Mount Hope Prepares For 40th Faire Season Staff members at Mount Hope Estate & Winery look forward to the opening of the 40th anniversary season of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 5 through Nov. 1, along with Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

With the safety of patrons, employees, vendors and participants leading event planning, new initiatives are being implemented to include the requirement of face coverings as directed by the secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, as well as enhanced sanitization protocols, social distancing, event capacity management, the use of participant personal protective

equipment and additional staff training. A “Safety Care” booklet defining the safety protocols will be posted at www.parenfaire.com to help guests prepare for their visit.

With capacity restrictions limiting daily attendance to a fraction of recent audiences, guests entering the front gates to this unique season will enjoy an experience similar to those of the early Faire years. Attendance will be set to the mandate to encourage social distancing and provide a safe experience for everyone.

Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Receives Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank announced on July 20 that it is receiving a donation of $125,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in 27 counties throughout central Pennsylvania through the food bank’s youth programs.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide more than 2.5 million meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. Since March, demand for the food bank’s services has increased more than 40% as families face financial uncertainty in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the

Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need.

Since the start of the COVID19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March.

As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Made-to-Share, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint.

Third-Grader Wins Birthday Card Design Contest Angelisa Rodriguez is the winner of this year’s Royer’s Flowers & Gifts Kids Club birthday card design contest. Angelisa, 7, is entering third grade at Glenside Elementary School in Reading.

Her design, featuring a couple of smiling flowers and the words, “Flowers for your birthday because you’re beautiful,” will adorn the electronic card that Kids Club members will receive on their birthdays in the coming year.

Angelisa’s prize is a free flower delivery on her next birthday.

Royer’s Flowers & Gifts’ annual food drive collected more than 1,100 pounds of nonperishable items to benefit 11 food banks in the company’s seven-county market. Royer’s Stems Hunger, as the food drive is known, ran from June 27 to July 4 at the florist’s 16 stores.

The recipient food banks were Helping Harvest in Berks County, New Hope Ministries and Salvation Army of Carlisle in Cumberland County, Hershey Food Bank and Manna Food Pantry at Pennbrook United Church of Christ in Dauphin County, South Central Community Action Programs in Franklin County, Columbia Food Bank, Ephrata Area Social Services and Food Hub/Lancaster

County Council of Churches in Lancaster County, Lebanon County Christian Ministries and St. Matthew Food Pantry in York County.

Food drive donors received a free carnation for each nonperishable food item they contributed, up to six per visit. Royer’s Stems Hunger has topped 1,100 pounds in each of its 10 years for a total of nearly nine tons collected.

Local Students Receive Honor Lower Dauphin High School graduating senior Madison Miduri was the Hummelstown Rotary Club’s Student of the Month for May. Madison is the daughter of Michelle Miduri.

She is a four-year member of the choir, fall play and spring musical, and she was Paulette in this spring’s production of “Legally Blonde.”

In the community, she participates in her church’s praise band and dances at McCann’s School of Dance. She also sings the national anthem at various school and community events.

She will attend Arcadia University with the goal of working in trauma/emergency medicine.
