Because his example is providing guiderails for his daughter’s journey, her father, Kirk Neidermyer, derives a lot of parental pride from that emerging independence. That he gets to share in her developmental experiences is a sheer delight. “I think doing this with Briella will make our relationship even stronger,” said Kirk. “We’ll have a bond in a different way. She’s my firstborn and only daughter. We get along. We respect each other. She listens and does what she’s told.” The bond that Kirk and Briella share is firefighting and community service. Home Is Where Servant Stage’s Heart Is BY JEFF FALK

Everybody deserves a place to call their own. Everybody needs a home. Servant Stage’s new home is also the nonprofit’s first. Not only are Servant Stage’s new digs a product of growth, the location is also a space where it can continue to grow. “It’s almost hard to put into words,” said Johnathan Bauer, the founder and executive director of Servant Stage. “It hits every once in a while. This is a home. Like, ‘Wow, this is for real.’ It hasn’t fully sunk in yet. SALT Proves Friendship Has No Age Limit BY CAT SHANNON

Are we ever too old to make new friends? Absolutely not, say the senior citizens who gather on Tuesday mornings for SALT (Seniors Are Living Treasures). The group meets for fun, friendship and fellowship from 9 a.m. to noon weekly at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “ We might have anywhere from 25 to 30 people each week,” said Tracy Miller, who coordinates the group with a team of volunteers. “We have people in their 50s and up. Our oldest member is 93.” Each meeting begins with people gathering up to 30 minutes early in the church lobby, enjoying the time to catch up with each other before heading into the chapel for coffee, food and games such as Uno or Apples to Apples. Coordinator Debbie Cohn might lead the group in chair yoga, or coordinator Renee Haney might direct a small group in devotionals or take prayer requests. Coordinator Nancy Shonk is in charge of the snack calendar, ensuring that everyone who wants to bring food has a chance to do so. The group does some activities once a month, such as playing bingo or enjoying a movie together. They also play roundrobin matches of games like cornhole or ladderball, switching tables regularly to encourage interaction among everyone. The group also brings in guest speakers to discuss a wide range of topics. Once a quarter, the See SALT pg 4

During the banquet a free-will offering will be taken to help with the mission of Restart Training Center Ministries, Inc.

New Holland, for 25 years, while Briella, a ninth-grader at ELANCO Online Virtual Academy, has officially been a probationary firefighter for about three months. But to say that Briella is following in her father’s footsteps might be selling her individuality a bit short. “My dad has always been one of the people I looked up to,” said Briella. “I’ve always watched him run out of the house and put on that blue light. I’m very, very proud of him because when he shows up, he shows out and does stuff on the scene.” Briella spent parts of the last six summers attending a cadet camp designed for school-age youths interested in becoming first responders, learning about various pieces of firefighting apparatus, learning to roll hoses and engaging in firefighting techniques. Since becoming a probationary firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, she’s gone out on a number of calls, for about a half-dozen of which Kirk has been the driver of the fire engine. Because of her age, Briella is limited in the duties she can perform, so her main role has been to connect fire hydrants. “She can’t go inside (burning) buildings, and she can’t go on runs involving heart attacks and vehicular accidents,” said Kirk. “Right now, it’s all a learning experience. Her main thing now is fire hydrants. She’s a gofer. If someone needs help with something, she’s going to help them with it.

When I drop her off at the firehouse, I know she’s in good hands. It’s kind of like a second family.” “I think it’s going really good,” said Briella. “When I go on calls, I get to the station, get on my gear, I get on the fire truck, and when we get there, we all have certain roles. I’ll start flowing water from a hydrant. I’m still learning - everyone is still learning. But if I have questions, I’ll go to (my dad) and ask him because I trust him.” “I want people to see me as confident and independent,” she added, “because when I show up, I do my best.” Garden Spot Fire Rescue couldn’t do what it does without the service of 50 volunteers. Briella is one of only two active female first responders within the organization. “Me and my dad have a really strong bond. We’re close,” said Briella. “Outside of firefighting, we do a lot of activities together, like softball. He’ll help me with my schoolwork if I need it. We’ll play video games together, and I’ll just

talk to him.” “She’s 100% committed,” said Kirk. “Any time she can go (to the fire station) to train and learn, she jumps on it. She’s into it. I hope she stays that way, and I think she will.” Briella has her whole life ahead of her, and sometimes things change. But it could be that this shared firefighting experience with her dad is laying the groundwork for a career and maybe even a lifestyle. “I’ve thought about being a flight nurse,” said Briella. “Basically, a flight nurse is someone who goes to accidents in a helicopter. The helicopters transport people to hospitals, where they can get more care. There are courses I can take in high school, and I want to get all of my qualifications.” “I’m very proud of Briella,” said Kirk. “She’s come a long way. She’s a very talented kid. I think it’s important to let your kids follow their dreams and to support them in any way you can. Anything you can do with your kids is important. You just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

church’s pastor, Richard Vaughn, provides a full breakfast for the group. Although SALT meets at the church, religious affiliation is not a requirement to join the group. “ I t ’s j u s t a m i n i s t r y t h r o u g h o u r c h u r c h ,” Miller said. “We will take anybody who is interested in coming. Some people come week after week . Some people have other activities they’re involved in and can only come once a month, and that’s OK.” Many of the members have lost a spouse and are looking for connection and companionship. That’s the case for Connie Bear, who started coming to SALT when the ministry began in October of 2024. “ Today is three years since I lost my husband,” she said on a recent Tuesday morning. “In my marriage, I didn’t have friends really beyond my

husband, so I was looking for somewhere to go to have fellowship and make new friends. I was looking for companionship.” She found that at SALT. “Ever ybody is so nice here,” she said. “We love each other. There are so many wonderful people here, and you feel like a family. I now have lots of friends to do things with, and we meet up outside of these mornings. We talk to each other outside of these meetings.” Fellowship is the focus of SALT meetings, although the food is a close second, the members joke. “Ever yone pitches in, and it’s wonderful,” Shonk said. “This room is filled with people who have found connection with each other.” S A LT b e g a n w h e n Miller recruited a few of her friends to help form the ministry. Seventeen

people showed up for the first meeting , and the group has grown to include members from across Lancaster County. “ T here isn’t a senior center in the Mount Joy/ Manheim area, and while we don’t want to be a senior center, we do want to provide outreach ministry,” Miller said. “We want to provide connection and fellowship.” W hile SALT officially meets once a week, its members ge t to ge ther regularly outside of the program, including meeting up for wing night at Beanie ’s in Mount Joy or driving each other to doctor appointments. band’s funeral, and most had never met him,” she said. “ We take care of each other. A lot of the people who come have said how lonely they were before this. Now they look for ward to this. community through theater and the performing arts, Servant Stage moved into its new headquarters at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, in East Lampeter Township in October. Up until that point, Servant Stage had been doing the best it could with what it had, while the mission around it was flourishing. “It’s so nice to have our own space,” said Bauer. “It’s fun every day. It’s nice to be able to have a conversation and not have to reply to an email. Having no s pace for s o m a ny years, you get used to it. A lot of it was working from home. We were storing sets and props in basements, garages and barns. Efficiency is a huge part of what we do. We were doing so many shows that it wasn’t sustainable.” S e r vant S ta ge ’s ne w home base is eight rooms and 8,500 square feet in size, 5,000 of which is dedicated to a workshop, warehouse and storage space and 3,500 of which is being used as offices and for conferences and meet-

ings. The space can also accommodate smaller auditions and rehearsals for the more than 15 productions and 190 performances that the organization has been staging each year. “We have been looking and actively explor ing spaces for a workshop and theater for like six or seven years now,” said Bauer. “Back in May, we came across this place in Greenfield, and our Realtor connected us with the landlord. We knew from the very first visit that it checked all of the boxes. The lease was signed in a month or so. This kind of fell into our lap.” Prior to its recent move, Servant Stage was practicing and rehearsing for performances at Lancaster Alliance Church, at 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, n o t f a r f ro m i t s n e w home. Depending upon the demands of each production, some of those rehearsals will continue to be conducted at the church. “The focus of the mission is on service,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “The

idea of using the performing arts and theater to serve the community, that’s been the mission from the very beginning and that’s why we chose that name. We love theater and the community, and there’s both a why and a how behind it.” “ With our mission of bringing shows into the community, we’ve been n o m a d i c ,” c o n t i n u e d Bauer. “Everyone on the team is very flexible and good at problem-solving. We’ve been able to make i t g ro w s o m u c h , b u t we’ve grown so much. The amount of programming we’re doing is growing, and our staff is growing. You need a space for it. It’s definitely long overdue.” Servant Stage is projecting to present 20 productions for both adults and youths with more than 220 total performances in 2026. T he traveling troupe’s performances will be staged at high schools, churches and retirement communities across Lancaster County. “When you factor in all the rehearsals, it’s a lot,”

said Bauer. “It’s people wanting to be a part of it. We’ve seen 300 people at auditions for performances that have had 150 spots. That’s why we keep adding productions. We keep getting requests for performances. There are cer tainly plenty of challenges, but we haven’t gotten to a place where we’ve had to cut back on shows because we don’t have performing places.” “(Operating our own theater) is definitely a dream as well,” added Bauer. “We would love to have a theater to do these shows. It’s still a dream down the road that would make more performances possible, but it’s one step at a time.” Servant Stage, which is funded through freewill offerings received at performances, business partnerships, sponsorships, individual donations and grant funding, is operated by seven full-time employees, six part-timers and a host of volunteers. The Promise Players will hold auditions at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1 9 0 0 L a m p e te r R o a d , L ancaster, on Sund ay, Jan. 11, from 2 to 7 p.m. for the group’s spring musical, “Simon Says: The Rockin’ Trial of Simon Peter.” The play will be performed from Thursdays to Sundays, March 12 to 15 and 19 to 22, and is set in a courtroom where Simon Peter is on trial for claiming Jesus was God on Earth. Many eyewitnesses will testify in the trial, with plenty of recognizable characters and a wide variety of classic rock-style songs. More than 20 speaking roles and solos are available, as well as large group singing. Roles are available for people from second grade through senior citizens. Those auditioning should come prepared to read from the script, demonstrate vocal range, and sing one verse of “Amazing Grace.” They may arrive early to complete the audition form and look over the audition scenes. Senior Center Fitness Instructors Needed The Lancaster County Office of Aging is seeking fitness instructors to teach in the Lancaster County Area. There is an urgent need in New Holland/ Ephrata Area. The agency provides the evidence based “Geri-Fit” Exercise class for seniors over 60. Classes are twice a week, and program sessions run for approximately 12 weeks. Instructors are hired as independent contractors and must provide necessary certifications and insurance coverage. The Office of Aging will provide funding for the evidenced-based Geri-Fit Program. Other Programs include Tai-Chi for Arthritis, Healthy Steps for Older Adults, and Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. Bi-lingual is a plus!
