Celebrate Christmas At Poole Forge

Caroling, children’s crafts, a display of holiday trees and decorations, a Christmas Marketplace and an opportunity to tour the newly renovated 18thcentury Ironmaster’s Mansion will be featured as Historic Poole Forge presents “Christmas at the Ironmaster’s.”

The holiday attraction will open with self-guided illuminated tours on Friday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will continue on Saturday, Dec. 4, from noon to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 5, from noon to 5 p.m.
On Dec. 4, there will be a traditional Welsh bonfire, caroling and a children’s craft. Photos with Santa in his sleigh will be available on Dec. 5, and there will be a food truck on-site throughout the weekend, as well as a sale of homemade refreshments.
“There will be live music in the mansion, including harpsichord and harp music on Saturday afternoon,” noted Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director.
Local nonprofit organizations and businesses will decorate holiday trees and exhibits throughout the site. Visitors will be able to vote for their favorite, and the winner will be issued the People’s Choice Award.
Members of the Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Society decorated the 1859 covered bridge and gazebo with Christmas lights that will remain lit during the holiday season. “With the covered bridge lit and decorated, as well as the new walking bridge and wishing well, we are the community’s favorite location for family photos,” Ekdahl noted.
Three floors of the mansion will be decorated and open to tour. The Paymaster’s House and the West Tenant House will be open with craft and gift vendors as part of a Christmas Marketplace. Vendors will sell items such as gift baskets, dog treats, photographs and prints, floral gifts, custom embroidery and bee products. Vendors will include Long’s Horseradish of Lancaster and Thirty-One.
Other participants will include Goodville Mutual Casualty Company, New Holland; Country Companion Animal Hospital, Morgantown; Painted Table Designs, Elverson; Cricket’s Antiques, Glenmoore; Churchtown Therapeutic Massage; Bangor Episcopal Church, Narvon; Lickity Split, New Holland; Chester County Solid Waste Authority, Narvon; RV Industries, Morgantown; the Village Library of Morgantown; Honey Brook Community Library; the Covered Bridge Society; Village Lockesmith Hair Studio, Narvon; and Morgantown Market.
Historic Poole Forge is located at 1940 Main St. (Route 23), Narvon, 3 miles east of the Shady Maple complex. Tickets will be sold at the gate. Those who purchase two tickets will receive a discount. Children 12 years of age and under will be admitted for free. For more information, visit www.HistoricPooleForge.org, call 484-797-5302 or email hpf1940@gmail.com.

Photos with Santa will be available during “Christmas at the Ironmaster’s” at Historic Poole Forge.

Food items available for purchase at the event will include soups, sandwiches, desserts, funnel cakes, pulled pork nachos, and french fries.
Activities that will take place in the community center on Main Street will include free children’s crafts, gingerbread cookie decorating for a nominal cost, and visits with Santa.
Horse-drawn carriage rides, which Styer noted are “very popular,” will be held in the park, as will a kids holiday train ride through the lights.
Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to pick up a map with a list of homes participating in the Terre Hill Christmas decorating competition. Styer said visitors are welcome to vote for their favorite houses at www.terrehilldays.com. Winners will be announced before Christmas.
Styer said the committee hopes to have another successful event in 2021. “Last year, we had good attendance, and we are anticipating seeing lots of return visitors and hopefully new guests to experience our Christmas festivities,” he said. He added that times for some activities may vary and recommended that those who plan to attend check https://terrehill days.com/christmas-in-the -park for specific information.

“What’s really interesting with this craft is that it combines the skills of working with different metals, mainly steel, and the creative artistic design elements that people incorporate into the item,” said Luke Shultz, member of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association (PABA). “We call ourselves artist blacksmiths, as opposed to the traditional (image) of a blacksmith from 200 years ago.”
The PABA gallery meeting will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Paradise Community Center, 6 Londonvale Road, Paradise, located just off Route 30.
The group is part of the Artists Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA), one of two chapters in Pennsylvania. “We cover eastern Pennsylvania, with some members from surrounding states,” said Shultz of the 20-year-old group, which boasts about 200 members who have a general interest in working with metal. “(That interest is) mainly blacksmithing or forging, but we also have some people who do tinsmithing, silversmithing, general fabricating, and other disciplines within the umbrella of metalwork,” Shultz said. The group holds regular meetings, all of which are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects.
The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools or things they want to sell.”
Another highlight of the event is the Ironmaster of the Day competition. “Any member can make an item designated for that competition,” explained Shultz, who said that the items are displayed at the meeting and voted on to determine which maker will be Ironmaster of the Day. This year’s designated item to create is a holiday wreath. “The person who makes (a wreath for the competition) creates their interpretation of a metal holiday wreath,” said Shultz. “They are all making the same thing, but there are so many variations on how people approach making that item.”
According to Shultz, interest in the craft of blacksmithing has grown recently. “Blacksmithing ... has seen a great resurgence in the last four years, because of television reality shows like ‘Forged in Fire,’” he said. “One of the best ways to get into the hobby is to join an association like PABA, where you can go to meetings and see demonstrations about how to work with metal,” he noted. “The (attendees) will be rubbing elbows and talking with experienced (crafters).” Shultz added that the organization has a lending library that features several hundred volumes of books, DVDs, and periodicals.
For more information, readers may search for “PABA PA Artist Blacksmiths’ Association” on Facebook.
Stanley Newcomer of Mount Joy holds an iron rose door knocker he made that won him the title of Ironmaster of the Day. All types of metalwork will be on display at the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmiths’ Association gallery meeting.

Holiday Dinner Giveaway Slated
The 35th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 18. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium.
To receive a holiday dinner, families must preregister by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-567-5341 from Monday, Nov. 29, through Friday, Dec. 10. Families may also register at http://pa211east .org/Lancaster/. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants the morning of Dec. 18.
The Lancaster County Project for the Needy is seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. To learn more, visit www.lcpn.org.
