Itis a day like no other in New Holland. Streets close … crafters put their creativity on display … local teens stroll the through town singing … and businesses, churches, restaurants, and more all contribute to the festive atmosphere.
Christmas on Main - the event that kicks off the local holiday season - will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. North and South Roberts Avenue will close at 10 a.m., and a section of Main Street will be closed from 2 to 6 p.m. Highlights of the event will include food vendors, a car show, and the arrival of Santa Claus, followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree on Towne Centre Green.
According to Jen Parsons, representative of the New Holland Business Association, which organizes the event, two Christmas Markets will be held to give attendees an
enhanced shopping experience. The traditional market will be held in the New Holland Farmers Day Association building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Down Franklin Street, a second market will be take place at Warehouse 100 as well. More than 40 total vendors are expected to participate.
A car show, featuring classic and vintage automobiles, will be held on Main Street between Roberts and Custer avenues from noon to 3 p.m. South Roberts Avenue will be lined with nearly a dozen food vendors, including those selling coffee, doughnuts, hot dogs, tacos, nachos, barbecued chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, chicken corn soup, french fries, and kettle popcorn.
Highlights of the event will include food vendors, a car show, and the arrival of Santa Claus, followed by the lighting of the Christmas tree.
To add to the seasonal feel, GMDSounds will spin tunes on North Roberts Avenue beginning at noon, and Santa Claus will arrive at Towne Centre Green, at the corner of Main Street and North Roberts Avenue, via a Garden Spot Fire Rescue truck at 2 p.m. Santa will greet children in his hut, donated by Lapp Structures, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
The true reason for the season will be celebrated with a live Nativity in front of Smoker Gard Associates on Main Street beginning at 2 p.m. Members of Lighthouse Assembly of God Church will create the scene and sing Christmas carols. Round-trip carriage rides and hayrides will originate at Stauffer’s Drug Store from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Also beginning at 2:30 p.m., New Holland
Fair Queen and Garden Spot High School (GSHS) senior Kendell Moats will read Christmas stories to children at Towne Centre Greene.
Among the many musical performances planned for the event will be a program by the LV Singers from Lighthouse Vocational Rehabilitation near the Christmas tree at Towne Centre Greene at 4:30 p.m. Students from the GSHS Vocal Ensemble will stroll and carol during the afternoon while members of the New Holland Band will also stroll and play. Just prior to the tree lighting at 5 p.m., the two entities will partner to perform at Towne Centre Greene. “It adds such a nice ambiance to lighting the tree,” said Parsons. Moats will have the honor of flipping the switch to illuminate the community Christmas tree at 5 p.m.

A quarter-century ago, Ned Bustard of Lancaster began writing “Saint Nicholas the Giftgiver” for his children. A year ago, InterVarsity Press chose the book to launch its IVP Kids literature line. “I wrote it because I wanted a book to read to my daughters that would embrace all the magic of Christmas and Santa Claus, but not lose the Christian element,” said Ned.
Ned, who illustrates and publishes, along with writing books, will bring his creative magic to the Garden Spot Village (GSV) Christmas Market to be held at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For a nominal cost, Ned will work with children to make cards that mimic the illustrations in his book, using woodblocks, inks, and rollers. Ned chose the woodcut look for his illustrations because he “appreciated the aesthetic.” He learned printmaking from a friend, and now he will share those skills with the children who attend the GSV event. Each hour, his wife, Leslie, will read the Christmas poem he wrote about Saint Nicholas.
Ned first became acquainted with GSV when his work was featured in an art exhibit there. The idea for the Saint Nicholas book traces back to when he and Leslie, who
teaches history, began exploring the Turkish origins of the jolly old elf. “The miracle of Christmas for (Saint Nicholas) is that Christmas never ends,” said Ned. “He just walks the Earth giving out gifts, and his bag never empties.”
Other family activities scheduled for the event include a Kids Christmas Market on the lower level of Village Square, family Christmas photos at the Village Square, and opportunities to visit the train room, where model engines steam through tiny villages, and the woodshop in the Gardens West Basement.
Shoppers will find a Christmas Makers Market, featuring handmade gifts, in the Village
Park. A gift basket silent auction for people of all ages will be held in the theater located off Village Square, and a chocolate bark and hot cocoa making demonstration will be given in the Village Park. Christmasthemed baked goods will be available for purchase on the lower level of Village Square.
In addition, visitors will find shops at GSV, such as the Share & Care Thrift Store and Artisans Corner open to peruse. GSV’s several eateries will welcome hungry attendees as well.
More information about GSV is available at www.garden spotvillage.org.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently offered ways the public can prepare for the winter season. Members of the public can access travel information on nearly 40,000 state-maintained roadway miles yearround at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow-truck locations
and details of when statemaintained roadways were last plowed. The information is provided via PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location technology, which uses units in the department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing a truck’s location.
To help the public prepare
for the season and share information about winter services, PennDOT offers operational information and traveler resources at www.penn dot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts.

PennDOT Offers Winter Guidance
Motorists should take the time now to ensure their vehicles are ready for winter and to know their own winter driving skills. Drivers should stock their vehicles with items needed for their health, safety, and comfort. Motorists should prepare for potential wintry weather by checking that they have supplies in their car before heading out. These supplies should include food, water, blankets, extra gloves and hats, a cellphone charger, hand or foot warmers, a windshield brush and scraper, and any specialized items like medications or baby and pet supplies.
Drivers should also consider how to react to whiteout conditions. In such con-
ditions, drivers should slow down, not stop suddenly, activate their car’s hazard lights, and extend their following distance to prevent dangerous multiple-vehicle crashes.
In addition, snow squalls can often produce dangerous and deadly travel hazards on otherwise clear winter days. The National Weather Service now issues Snow Squall Warnings that alert drivers of whiteout conditions and slippery roadways, so motorists can avoid traveling directly into these areas.
If motorists encounter snow- or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance, and avoid distractions.

Ryerss Farm To Host Holiday Open House
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Ryerss Farm for Aged Equines will present “Horses and Hot Chocolate, a Holiday Open House” on Sunday, Dec. 4, from noon until 3 p.m.
Attendees will be able to visit with the farm’s residents, take photos with Santa and enjoy complimentary refreshments, including hot chocolate and homemade Christmas cookies. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
Attendees are invited to use their own cellphones or
cameras to take photos with Santa. “The photos with Santa will be in the barn,” said Lynn Seeburger, a member of the Ryerss board of managers. “We will have it set up so that children can write letters to Santa. When they get to Santa, they can put their letters in the mailbox and say hello to Santa and get a candy cane.”
The Ryerss Gift Shop will be open, offering holiday gifts. “It will be well-stocked,” said Seeburger. “We have stuffed animals, Ryerss apparel, candles, coasters, light-up cowboy boot
glasses, flashing western pins and jewelry.” Also offered for sale will be the 2023 Ryerss Farm calendar.
The Giving Tree will be on display for those who choose to provide financial support to the retired and rescued horses that live at the farm. There will be several options such as a bag of feed or a veterinary visit, with a dollar amount assigned to each card. One of the cards will also ask people to sponsor a horse for one year.
“(We invite people) to give a horse a pedicure or buy a
halter,” explained Seeburger. “I always ask the kids, ‘How would you like to buy a Christmas present for a horse?’ They can look at the pictures of the horses and pick one (to sponsor).”
Founded in 1888, Ryerss Farm provides a comfortable retirement for senior horses, donkeys and mules that have faithfully served their former owners or were rescued from abusive situations. The horses at Ryerss are never worked again and spend their remaining days grazing the fields at the property.

PA Preferred Website Created
The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recently launched a website for the PA Preferred brand, accessible at www.papreferred.com. The website allows people to search for Pennsylvania products and connect with farmers.
Items with the blue and yellow PA Preferred checkmark are grown, harvested, or produced in Pennsylvania,
and buying these products means consumers are supporting Pennsylvania farmers and producers and keeping their dollars local. The Department of Agriculture encourages Pennsylvania residents to look for these products while exploring the commonwealth’s farmers markets and farm destinations this fall and winter.
Ryerss Farm
“Omen, a little pinto pony, came from a very bad situation. He was abused and when we first got him, you could not even pet him,” said Seeburger, adding that Omen now welcomes human contact. “He is a real success story; he is a farm favorite.”
In addition to the horses, Ryerss is home to Albert the donkey and Rhubarb, a large potbellied pig, who will all be on hand to visit during the
open house. “We have three pigs. They live in the upper barn. Rhubarb is the oldest and the biggest,” noted Seeburger. The other pigs are Hamlet and Penny.
For more information about Ryerss or the holiday open house, call 610-469-0533 or visit www.ryerssfarm.org or www.facebook.com/ryerss.farm. Ryerss Farm, 1710 Ridge Road (Route 23), Pottstown, is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including holidays.

Mission’s
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On Nov. 1, Water Street Mission issued a challenge to the Lancaster community to break its food collection record by Dec. 22. Last year, the organization collected 94,000 pounds of food, breaking all of its previous records. This year, Water Street Mission hopes to amass 100,000 pounds of donated food before Christmas.
This call to action is necessitated by a recent increase in the number of those in need of Water Street Mission’s services, such as its emergency shelter and outreach center.
“Throughout the summer and into the fall, the emergency shelter has filled up, which doesn’t normally happen,” said Matt Clement, director of marketing for Water Street Mission. “We’re full through every week and we’re reaching capacity. The food drive is a huge part of fulfilling the need that we’re seeing.”
The emergency shelter provides those experiencing homelessness with a hot meal and a safe place to sleep, as well as opportunities to move into residential programs and receive further assistance. The shelter does not normally
Accordion Group Posts Meeting
The First Lancaster Accordion Group (FLAG) will meet on Sunday, Nov. 27, at Zion Church of Millersville, 317 N. George St., Millersville, from 2 to 4 p.m. Accordion players, music enthusiasts, and other interested parties are invited to attend.

receive an increase in engagement until the winter months but has noticed an alarming spike in those requiring assistance far sooner than usual, which Water Street Mission attributes to the rising costs of food, rent and fuel.
Water Street Mission serves 2,000 families on average each month through its outreach center. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week, the outreach center provides families with an opportunity to pick up dairy products, fruits, vegetables, eggs, desserts and
occasionally hygiene items, distributing over 30,000 pounds of food on a monthly basis. On Fridays, whatever goods are left over for the week are able to be picked up without presenting an ID.
“The goal for the outreach center is to create a barrier between people and homelessness,” said Clement. “If someone has to choose between paying their bills and buying groceries for the month, we take the groceries out of the equation so they can focus on keeping their housing.”
Water Street Mission is always in need of volunteers and due to the current demand is also looking to bring aboard more employees in roles such as life coaches and case managers. “If we want to grow our capacity and meet community needs, we require quite a few people,” said Clement. “The big call to action is for people to donate. That would be massive.”
