Ministerium Plans Holiday Service By Ann Mead Ash
One hallmark of the ELANCO Ministerium Community Thanksgiving Eve Service is that over the many years that the community has gathered to give thanks, the event has been held at a different area church each year. Another tradition is to focus on a local ministry. The 2018 annual community Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, on Wednesday, Nov. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be
the Rev. Donald Sweimler, chaplain at Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS). LVS, located at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, provides a Christ-centered environment for individuals with disabilities to engage in vocational development and find employment opportunities. The title of Sweimler’s sermon is “Be Anxious for Nothing.” Those who attend are invited to bring food items to support the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. Food items that are needed by the Food and Nutrition Center include canned fruit, pancake mix, pancake syrup, canned pasta, spaghetti sauce, jelly, canned meats, stuffing mix, and boxed potatoes. Personal care items that may be donated include shampoo and deodorant. See Special Service pg 16

A Time To Give Thanks
Merv Lapp (right), manager of HayLoft Ice Cream, and his wife, Carol, are helping to support the Allegany Boys Camp through their work at the nonprofit Leola store, which sells ice cream, sandwiches, candles, and more.
Many area children and their parents will remember visiting HayLoft Candles at 95 S. Groffdale Road, Leola. For years, the location was the site of a petting zoo and a place to buy ice cream treats and scented candles. In the spring, HayLoft Ice Cream, at the same location, became a nonprofit organization raising funds to help troubled boys find success. “We opened May 14 with the sole purpose of supporting the Allegany Boys Camp,” explained Merv Lapp, manager of HayLoft, who added that all the on-site staff except the managers are volunteers. Staffers and campers have been enjoying the experience offered by Aaron’s Acres, a camp that celebrates the capabilities of children with special needs, for 20 years. The organization will hold a gala in honor of those two decades of service on Dec. 8. By Ann Mead Ash
“We are celebrating our past and looking to the future,” said Aaron’s Acres executive director Risa Paskoff. “We are where we are because of the community and the support (it provides). It has been an amazing journey, and it’s
because people believe in us.” To celebrate its history and its future, the organization will hold its first gala at the Bolger Conference Center in Gordiner Hall at Millersville University, 40 James St., Millersville, on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m. The event has sold out of all 200 tickets.
