“Box Out Bullying” Appropriate for Local Audiences BY JEFF FALK

Through his stage productions of “Box Out Bullying,” Jeremy Rubenstein has shared his message about bullying across the country and positively impacted thousands of lives. Now, it seems that the next logical step in Rubenstein’s 18-year journey of inspiration would be to bring that message home to Lancaster County. “I think this is something that everybody has a story with,” said Rubenstein, who has backgrounds in education, theater and basketball. “They’ve been bullied, they’ve witnessed bullying or they’ve (been bullies) themselves. Children are going to mimic the people

Mural Illustrates Organization’s Power to Turn Houses Into Homes BY JEFF FALK

Murals are so much more than oversized paintings. Colorful, loud and proud, murals are the ultimate in visual storytelling. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has a great big story to tell. “Murals are a great way to celebrate the community in a positive way and add some color to your day,” said Mike Andrelczyk, the communications and volunteer manager for the organization. “This mural is a celebration of community, and the Lancaster Habitat ReStore is a place where the community can come together to support our mission of building homes, community and hope, just by shopping and getting a great deal. This mural is really special for a lot of reasons, but one of the best parts is that it illuminates how Habitat families work hard to make their dream of homeownership a reality, and how people from all walks of life come together to make our community a better place and build a brighter future.” In late August, L ancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, which is located at 1061 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, unveiled a 48-foot-by-17-foot mural depicting and commemorating its special journey of community leadership. The mural also recognized the organization’s 40 years of making Lancaster and Lebanon better places to live. The 90-minute unveiling event drew dozens of public officials, See Habitat pg 5

With so many organizations offering different types of assistance, finding the right resource can be a challenge for veterans and their families. The information session will give attendees an opportunity to learn about services they may not know are available, ask questions about their individual circumstances and connect directly with people who can guide them through the process. Caregivers can also benefit from learning about programs designed to help them navigate the challenges of caring for a veteran. By bringing representatives from multiple agencies together, the Legion hopes to make it easier for veterans to identify their needs and find the appropriate next steps. Federal, state and local agencies will attend the program. Participants will include a Veterans Affairs (VA) Service Officer, who will help with VA claims processing; VA Benefits Administration, which will provide information on how to register with the VA; the Building Bridges Foundation, which will highlight its equine therapy program; S heetz Funeral Home, which will help attendees understand veteran burial benefits; and Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which is focused on supporting female veterans. The event will be informal and held in the church fellowship hall, enabling attendees to network with other veterans, ask questions and gain resources they seek. “ T h e re w i l l b e l i g h t refreshments available for everyone to enjoy as they build their community of support,” Miller said. church, but as a social organization. We try to work on every aspect of a person’s life.” On average, more than 30 individuals visit THASC on any given Monday or Thursday. The local nonprofit was established on Jan. 15, 2025, and in its initial year of operation, THASC hosted more than 2,000 visits. “ They ’re drawn to THASC, and a lot of it is word of mouth,” said Kling. “We’ve made a concerted effort to get the word out. There are eight senior centers in Lancaster County, and we’re the only independent one. People move from center to center because we all meet on different days. We have programming that comes from all over the county. Basically, people come in because they want that fellowship.” THASC serves seniors who reside in 14 northeast Lancaster County municipalities, including New Holland, Leola, Ephrata and Adamstown. More than 25 churches are represented by those individuals. “I love walking in and watching the interaction of people,” said Kling, a retired pastor from St . Paul’s United Methodist Church in Terre Hill who helped found THASC. “The people who are there walk in each morning with the biggest smiles on their faces.” For additional information, go to www.terrehill seniors.org.

Stoltzfus ’ 90-minute performance will be broken down into a pair of 45-minute sets divided by a 15-minute intermission. More than 200 individuals are expected to attend, some of whom are affiliated with THASC, as well as family members and friends. Event organizers are hoping to raise $3,500, money that will benefit new exercise programs at THASC, like a drumming pro g ram that employs weighted drumsticks and a “bingo-cise” program that combines the game of bingo with exercise. “We do have a health element to our program,” said Kling. “We start our days with chair exercise set to music, and one of the reasons is because older adults sometimes have stability issues. Older adults love music. We are also working on mental and emotional health.” THASC, which is situated at 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Thursdays, though officials are hoping to add an hour of operation to each day. In addition to the exercise programs, THASC, which is operated by activities director Cindy Tomczak, offers light meals, board and card games, musical performances and volunteer opportunities. “Our vision is of a compassionate world for older adults,” said Kling. “We’re there for people to come and find belonging, not as a

community partners, organization staff and volunteers, supporters and local residents who have benefited from the nonprofit’s services and featured a public address from Lancaster mayor Jaime Arroyo. The 40th anniversary mural was created by local artists Brenda Blank and Steve Wilson and was sponsored by Joe, Jake, David and Emily Deerin. “The great thing about Habitat events is they are always such joyous celebrations of the community coming together to do something meaningful and powerful,” said Andrelczyk. “We’ve grown a lot over the course of 40 years. Thanks to our staff, board, donors, volunteers and supporters, we’re now able to build a greater number of affordable homes in Lancaster and L ebanon count ies and have an even bigger i m p a c t . We ’ r e a l w a y s innovating and finding more efficient ways to build. No matter how much we’ve grown, we’re dedicated to making our community a better place for everyone, one home at a time.” “The people who volunteer, give and shop with Habitat may be modest,” said Carolyn Haskell, a board member, “but we are also optimists and people of action. We believe the best of humanity comes from kindness, compassion and the generosity of others. Together, we overcome great challenges.” The mural was painted on the southeast interior wall of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in L ancaster. You’re invited to a Day of Thanksgiving to benefit Cavod, a nonprofit performing arts organization with locations in New Holland and Manheim. The celebration and fundraiser will be held on Friday, Nov. 6. Online giving will take place all day, while Cavod will host the community from 6 to 10 p.m. at its Manheim site, 1223 Lancaster Road. “This will be an evening of celebration,” said Connie Dienner, executive director of Cavod. “It will be fun for the whole family.” T he festivities will include free popcorn, pizza, cookies and drinks. It will also be an opportunity for the community to tour the newly expanded space in Manheim and a chance to break in the facility’s new black box theater. “This will be our first time having an event in that space, and we’re so excited,” Dienner said. “We’ll have performances every 20 minutes.” A DJ will provide music, and a variety of prizes will be up for grabs. People are encouraged to donate at the event as well as online prior to coming, she said. “This is just a fun day to try to reach our goal, which is $80,000,” she explained. “It’s a unique opportunity to invest in the lives of youth and adults and the classes we have.”

Cavod hosted its first Day of Thanksgiving four years ago in New Holland. “People love it,” Dienner said. “They come to celebrate with us.” Dienner decided to move the event to Manheim to showcase the site and give the public an opportunity to learn more about Cavod. With a name that means “the glory of God” in Hebrew, the nonprofit Cavod opened its first facility in New Holland 21 years ago. The Manheim facility opened in 2023 and underwent a 6,000-square-foot expansion earlier this year. Cavod offers classes in dance, theater and music. “We have a place for kids and families to come and be a part of this ministry, where every person is accepted and loved for who they are,” Dienner said. “We strive to combine excellence in the arts with faith. It’s a very unique mission. We create with purpose.” Proceeds from the Day of Thanksgiving will be used to fund programs and provide

But the cool thing is that the solutions are the same. We’d love to do more shows in Lancaster. “Do people know about this?” added Rubenstein.

“We could definitely do a better job of letting people know about this. I’m very careful about the product we put forward. These are kids; they’re very impressionable. I wish they did know about me. People who have us once keeping on booking us year after year.” The stage presentations of “B ox O ut Bullying ” revolve around characters and cousins Tom and Jerry and are designed to identify what constitutes bullying and what doesn’t. sage is clear, but room is left for creative interpretation. “There’s a script, and the plot follows the trials and tribulations of Tom and Jerry,” said Rubenstein. “There’s no fourth wall in the show, and when the actors come out, they’re continuously interacting with the audience. There’s a box in the middle of the stage; it has all the answers to bullying inside of it, but it’s locked. With each lesson learned, a lock pops off the box. When the audience figures it out, the box will open and inside is the answer. “You’ve got to see the s h o w to f i n d o u t t h e answer,” Rubenstein continued. “It’s a very big box, but the answer is ver y small, and it’s been in front of the audience the whole time. There’s a difference between accidents and conflicts and bullying. We want to give students different tools while teaching them grit and resilience.”

People liked that it was research-based. Now, we are addressing this for the high school level. We’re developing new curriculum. We’re trying to build on this even more. We’d like to be well known. “I just love this bag! I use it every day, and it only gets better with time. The leather is so soft, yet durable, and I love how it’s developing that beautiful, naturally worn look. The quality is amazing, and it goes with everything! Best of all, I love knowing I’m supporting a local business. That’s something that’s really important to me!” - Jocelyn E.

scholarships for students in need. “ W hen kids come to Cavod, they grow, they learn and they become community leaders,” Dienner said. “There are so many stories of kids who grew not just in their performance skills but in their relationship with God. It brings a whole new level to who they are as a person.” She’s eager to introduce the community to Cavod’s Manheim site and highlight the organization’s mission for even more people. “Anybody coming here who hasn’t been here before would be totally overwhelmed in a good way,” she said. “They probably had no

idea this was right in their backyard. We’re really excited about connecting with the Manheim community.” She hopes families will stop by for a fun evening of free food, entertainment and fellowship. “Come be a part of it this day and see what it’s all about,” she said. “If Cavod is new to you, this is the perfect time for you to come in and find out who we are and what we’re all about.” To learn more about Cavod or donate to the Day of Thanksgiving, visit https:// cavod.org.
