Of the three persons of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is the least conspicuous. In his next book, author Henry Youndt explores the unseen and underappreciated role that the Holy Spirit plays in the world. “It’s fictional histor y,” said Youndt. “It’s based on the account in the Bible. I’m making up this sailor character. It’s fiction based
around an historical event.” Youndt’s new book is titled “Gubernator: Biblical Adventure in the Life of a Sailor.” Produced through local publisher Masthof of Morgantown, the book is expected to be released in November. “‘Gubernator’ is a word that refers to someone who is a helmsman or who steers a ship,” said Youndt. “I decided to use that word in the book. I make references to the Holy Spirit being a guide or an Author Henry Youndt displays the

There is a society of covert actors operating in our community. They call themselves “The Lancaster-Lebanon League Quarterback Club.” They meet regularly under the pretenses of victories, competitiveness and an exchange of game film. But the real nature of their mission is to promote a game they love, foster lasting friendships and aid student-athletes. “It’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself,” said Kris Miller, the ringleader and president of the club. “I played in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, I was an assistant coach and now I’m a head coach. The group of guys and camaraderie we have is really cool, and it’s special to be a part of that.” Miller is the head football coach at Ephrata Senior High School and one of more than 40 coaches - one representative from each of the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s 37 member schools actively involved with the club, a tradition-rich organization dedicated to growing the game of football and helping its players become better young men on and off the gridiron. During the regular scholastic fall season, the quarterback club meets at 7 p.m. on every Tuesday at the centrally located Ephrata American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. T he 90-minute mee tings consist of supper, coaches’ nominations for players of the week and players of the year, voting, discussion and the planning of upcoming events. On a sunny afternoon in April 2010, Betsy Shank was mowing the grass in front of her home in Millersville. After seeing what initially appeared to be a dead baby squirrel, Shank cut the engine and rushed to take a closer look. The little kit was still alive, so Shank raced to her computer and searched for advice on how to best help the animal. Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on the animals it serves. At the facility, Shank and a team of volunteers provide medical stabilization, nutrition and housing for injured animals such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs to help
them recover and return to the wild with minimal human imprinting. After severe storms and a tornado tore through Lancaster County in August, local residents began sifting through debris to find the extent of the damage and clean up their yards. Many people discovered they weren’t the only ones affected by the destructive weather; hundreds of animals were left injured or displaced in the storm’s wake, including mothers that left behind nests of their young. Within a few days, the lobby of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation was packed with leaf-covered locals who halted their storm cleanup to bring baby rabbits, squirrels and mice in need of care. Although the rehabilitation facility had just closed its intake office, Shank contacted Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven as soon as she heard a major storm was about to hit the county. “I said ‘Hey, I’m closed, but trees and houses are going to come down. People aren’t going to drive over an hour

to bring these animals to you,’” Shank said. “They said if I took the animals in and got them stabilized, I could transfer them to Red Creek. So we just opened the doors.” Within two days, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation took in more than 100 animals affected by the storm. Assisted by a team of volunteers, Shank and her husband, David Aichele, stabilized as many of the animals as they could before transferring them to Red Creek Wildlife Center. Any of the rescues still in need of medical attention remained at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation to recover. “People were in the middle of cleaning up what happened to their homes , b u t the y were compassionate enough to prioritize helping these baby animals. It was just amazing ,” said Aichele, Shank’s righthand man and steadfast supporter who’s helped with everything from construction pro jects to emergenc y rescues since she founded Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation in 2021. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation moved to its current location in November 2024, an expansion that greatly increased the organization’s capacity for rescued animals and the specialized equipment
necessary to care for them. Although a major fundraising campaign made the expansion possible, Shank continues to rely on community support to cover the rehabilitation center’s expenses, as well as help from volunteer staff members. In September, Acorn Acres Rehabilitation Center launched Second Chance Circle, a community of monthly donors who can contribute any amount to support the organization. “It’s a whole lot of people giving a little bit that are going to make a whole lot of second chances possible,” said Shank. “Every donation helps us give another animal a second chance.” In addition to joining S econd C hance C ircle, community members who wish to suppor t Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation may become volunteers to assist with various aspects of the operation. “Pe ople can help w ith animal care or other things that are crazy important for us but don’t require contact with the animals,” said Shank. Quarterback from pg 1 are announced in early December following the club’s year-end banquet at The Timbers Restaurant in Mount Gretna. “Football participation numbers overall are going down, for whatever reasons,” said Miller. “Football is a hard sport that requires a lot of time. You get 10 guaranteed opportunities (games) to play, and you’ve got to work 52 weeks a year to play. Recognizing players is important because you want to recognize the work they put in. It also gets their name out there. Anytime players see their names in the paper, they feel like the work has been worth it.” The quarterback club has been operating in its current capacity as an organization for 75 years. Not every football league across the state is supported by a group like the Lancaster-Lebanon League

It was a great game, and then on the following Tuesday I got an opportunity to sit down with Coach (Bryan) Strohl and have a conversation. We get to bounce ideas off each other, and everyone has always been willing to give feedback. It’s a great resource to have. The Mummas Pay It Forward for Kids Like Zeke BY JEFF FALK
There are many meaningful ways to memorialize a loved one who has passed. All of them are heartfelt, comforting and inspirational. But one of the most moving ways is assisting someone who is experiencing life challenges which are similar to the ones your beloved faced. Take the Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing as a great example. “ We d o k n o w i t ’s a good thing,” said Laurie Mumma, Zeke’s mom and one of the organizers of the benefit golf outing. “We’ve always wanted to help people, but we don’t have thousands (of dollars) to give away. There are so many different things you need for these kids; it’s just a world of expense. If we can help people, we’re just like, ‘Let’s do it.’” Recently, the Mumma family helped stage the 15th edition of the annual Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing at Manor Golf Club in Sinking Spring. The event raised about $6,000, pro ce e d s that were donated to the family of 15-year-old Conestoga Valley High School student Miles Brenneman, who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. About 150 players and supporters participated in the golf outing, as well as a handful of generous sponsors. The Brenneman family is using the money as a down payment on a handicapped-accessible van.
“ The goal of the Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing is to help other families who have special needs kids and give them financial support in honor of our son, Zeke,” said Mumma. “In the special needs world, it takes finances. (The donation is) a dent in the cost of a van.” “Two friends of mine nominated this family,” continued Mumma. “Miles does not eat orally. He’s in a wheelchair; he’s not walking and talking. But he has emotions and vision, and he does get excited.” The Zeke Mumma Memor ial Golf O uting was established in 2012 to help defray the Mummas’ medical expenses and supportive costs associated with caring for Zeke. After Zeke passed in April of 2021 at the age of 17, the Mummas decided to continue conducting the golf outing and to present the proceeds to families who have similar needs. Over the course of its existence, the golf outing h a s ra i s e d m o re t h a n $150,000, and during the last six years the Mummas have blessed six different families with the proceeds. T h at mone y h a s gone toward things like housing renovations, doorway widenings, an all-terrain wheelchair, playground turf and tuition to Aaron’s Acres camps. “My husband said, ‘I think we can do a golf outing,’ and we went for it,” said Mumma, a resident

People just see love in progress.” Zeke Mumma suffered a brain injur y when he was eight months old and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. The injury also affected his digestive system and his breathing. “Zeke would laugh when you would do fast movements, and he did some Hersheypark rides,” said Mumma. “He was nonverbal; his communications were three movements. ‘Gubernator’ from pg 1 influence. I think the Holy Spirit is a guide for our life and helps us with our lives, just like the Gubernator guides the ship.” Youndt employed the help of a friend to create the cover of “Gubernator: Biblical Adventure in the Life of a Sailor,” which is about 50 chapters in length. The book’s concept is based on one of the apostle Paul’s missionary journeys from the book of Acts in the Bible. “ The purpose of the book is to entertain people with the story of apostle Paul’s trip to Rome and give some insights that might not be apparent to everyone,” said Youndt. “There’s a young sailor who is going off to sea for the first time, trying to earn money to get his father out of prison. He finds out sailors don’t really accumulate too much wealth. Paul is one of the passengers on the trip. The sailor returns home with not nearly (enough) money to pay off his father’s debt but finds out the debt has been paid. “I was inspired by reading through the account in Acts,” added Youndt, a 79-year-old resident of Bowmansville. “Around midnight, during a storm that’s been going on and on, they sense they’re nearing land. That got me thinking, ‘How did they know they were nearing land?’” Working at two to three hours per clip, it took Youndt about a year to write “Gubernator: Biblical Adventure in the Life
of a Sailor.” He submitted the finished product to his publisher in March. “I’ll often get up in the morning and spend time writing ,” said Youndt. “I don’t write every day. Sometimes you get to a point where you’re not sure how to start the next chapter. Other times, it just flows. “I come up with an idea and just start writing,” Yound t cont inue d. “I have a writer’s group I’m involved with, and it helps me get feedback from other writers. I don’t have a set procedure. Sometimes I work out a plot ahead of time.” Since publishing “Eddies for Outdoorsmen” in 2004, Youndt has written five more novels. It’s a passion for writing that he has only explored later in life. “I always enjoyed writing assignments when I was in school,” said Youndt. “But I didn’t like school. I didn’t put effort into it. After spending years in the woodworking industry, I started (writing) because I enjoyed it and found that I was pretty good at it. “I’d say I write more for myself,” concluded Youndt. “I don’t usually visualize a typical audience. I write for people like me, which means I’m writing for people who don’t read very much. Which means I have to keep their interest.” To purchase “Gubernator: Biblical Adventure in the Life of a Sailor,” go to www.henryyoundt.com or www.masthof.com.

Marks from pg 6 “Most of the pastor’s job is done behind the scenes,” said Marks. “Preaching, teaching and ‘being out in front’ of the congregation or other groups is actually only a small percentage of how pastors spend their time. Preparing messages and lessons, preparing for and attending meetings,
ministering directly to congregants, overseeing staff, connecting with others in the community and church administration are all very important pastoral tasks, and are all done behind the scenes.” For additional information, go to www.findfaith here.org.

Josh Baldwin to Perform in Lancaster
Pen Pals from pg 1
Josh Baldwin will bring his Worship Nights Tour to Lancaster Bible College (LBC) on Thursday, Nov. 5. Presented by LBC and Junction Center Productions, the event will be held at 7 p.m. in Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Baldwin, a songwriter and worship leader, joined
correspondence with residents and staff at Garden Spot Village. The students hand write short letters on paper, mail them to the adults at Garden Spot Village through the United States Postal Service and then read the replies and responses when they get them back. “It’s done on a one-onone basis,” said Dimon. “ We’re excited because students get to write real le tters and build connections. We’re hoping they will get a greater worldview. Maybe they will see how the world has changed. Some of the kids don’t have older adults in their lives. When (the Garden Spot Village residents) write back, we talk about the words they used and their meanings.” The pen pal correspond e n c e s f ro m t h e Ne w Holland third-graders are a couple of paragraphs in length, constructed from form letters that encourage the budding student writers to fill in blanks - at least at the beginning. The students write one letter each month, and each letter corresponds to a seasonal theme, like Thanksgiving in November, Christmas in December and New Year’s resolutions in January.
Baldwin’s newest studio album, “Worth Everything,” was set to be released in October. The 10-song collection was created with the local church in mind and reflects Baldwin’s desire to encourage believers to view worship not simply as music but as a lifestyle of surrender. Baldwin lives in Thompson’s Station,

“With the third-graders, we weren’t sure how it would go,” said Dimon. “We started with fill-in-theblank. Then they can decorate them by adding things like cartoons from a graphic design website. We practice putting the addresses on the envelopes, putting the return addresses on them and then we send them. “ We just got our first ones back ,” continue d Dimon. “ The first ones w e re j u s t i n t ro d u c i n g ourselves. We wrote about everything we love about the fall. We asked our pen pals things like, ‘What did you do as a kid?’” In Dimon’s class, the initial return letters were met with great anticipation. The students learned that writing letters can have its rewards. “With the first ones we did, the students didn’t know who their pen pals would be,” said Dimon. “We started our letters, ‘Dear Pen Pal.’ When we got the letters back, we sat down on the carpet, and I read them to the students. They were cheering for each other, and they were excited to meet their pen pals. So, it was really cute.” In May, near the end of the school year, the participating Garden Spot Village residents will travel to New Holland Elementary School to meet their student pen pals face to face. “I’m sure for the Garden Spot residents, (the pen pal exercise) is very interesting,” said Dimon. “Some may be looking for connection and to have something to look forward to. Hopefully, they’re looking forward to the meeting in May.” In the past, New Holland Elementary has involved fourth-graders and, before that, fifth-graders in its pen pal letter writing exercise. This is the first year that third-graders have tried their hands at it. “Third grade is a big year,” said Dimon. “It’s the first year that the gap between the higher-achieving students and the lower-achieving students occurs. Initially, it was learning to read; now it’s reading to learn. By the third grade, students should know how to read quickly, and then building from there.” For additional information, go to www.elanco.org.
