Artisans Have Gifts Meant To Be Shared

Trustworthy and loyal, Scouts always remain true to themselves. No matter where one goes, a Scout is always a Scout. But never is a Scout more a Scout than when she or he is camping at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation.

“I’m sure there are some places where kids can make crafts or practice archery,”

said Matt Klutzaritz, the Scout executive for the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Scouting America, which oversees the operation of Camp Mack. “But to be able to do it all in one spot is kind of our attraction. Kids earn advancement through progression. One thing we know about kids is that you don’t want to rain on their advancements. That keeps them in the

We are given talents that can be used for the benefit of others and to promote a greater good. When we spend time on those talents, honing them and sharpening them, they become skills, and we become artisans.

A resident of Garden Spot Village, Pixie Boswell makes jewelry featuring stray buttons. She is an artisan and one of the coordinators of the village’s upcoming showcase.

“We’re all retired, and we all had professional lives that may or may not be related to our skills,” said Boswell. “We have found things we like doing, and it has enhanced our lives. We’re not sitting here being old. We’re all energized. Being retired can be detrimental to you, or you can flourish. Garden Spot Village encourages us to live with purpose. This is one of the purposes that enhances our lives.”

For Mike Musser, Recovery Fight Is Personal

When Mike Musser looks into the faces of the people he’s helping, he sees himself. And when he does, one of his hopes is that they will have what he has now.

Musser’s Street Ministry is based in empathy and inspired by hope.

“I also see people I used to live with on the streets,” said Musser. “They see our consistency, and when they’re ready, they come to us. My wife and I started it, and we did it by ourselves. Now we’re getting more people to help. The need doesn’t get missed. Every day in Lancaster, there are food giveaways, except Sundays. That’s why we do it on Sundays.” Musser and his wife, Sarah, founded Musser’s Street Ministry in 2023. With the help of eight to 10 volunteers, the Mussers distribute meals to more than 50 individuals right there on the sidewalks outside of First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on the second and last Sundays of every month.

Prior to distribution, the food is prepared at Leola United Methodist Church and Breakout Ministries in Leola.

“I made some bad choices when I was younger, and I was homeless once,” said Musser, a 55-year-old resident of Leola. “I used to go to the free meals in Lancaster. There was a gentleman there who would hand out stuff out of the trunk of his car. I made a promise to God that if I ever got out of that situation, I’d

Artisans Showcase from

New Holland, Garden Spot Village’s Artisans Corner will present this year’s edition of its annual showcase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. The event, which is designed to promote the work of the retirement community’s artisans, will be conducted inside the village’s indoor park - a multipurpose room teeming with stations.

Not only is the public welcome to attend the free showcase, but it is also encouraged to do so.

“We’re trying to encourage our residents to come and see how we make our products,” said Boswell. “But we’re also encouraging people from the outside, because when they do come, they’re very impressed with the

one-of-a-kind items. It’s a great place to buy gifts. It’s high-quality, highend merchandise. We really want to engage the public.”

The Artisans Corner Showcase will feature the work of 11 resident artisans. The artisans will demonstrate the steps involved with creating their crafts and will offer some of the final products for sale.

Available for purchase will be items like wooden games, wood carvings, wooden bowls, purses made out of cork, children’s books made from cloth, watercolor paintings, vases, small Christmas trees and snowmen and, of course, button-ornamented jewelry.

“All of the artisans will

be demonstrating some portions of their creative processes,” said Boswell. “It’s up to each individual artist how to best demonstrate how they do things. Some will make custom items for individuals. It’s not crafts. They’re artisans with creative ideas.

We’re showcasing only half of the artisans who have items in the (Artisans Corner).”

“The creative talent is mind boggling; it’s outstanding,” she continued.

“These people aren’t putting kits together. They have creative juices they use to come up with their own designs. Their work is so awe-inspiring, and everyone has developed their craft over a period of time.”

During the Artisans

Corner Showcase, some of Garden Spot Village’s stores and restaurants will also be open to the public.

“We find that some people start at one side of the room and go from table to table,” said Boswell. “They’ll spend more time at the tables with the things that they’re interested in. Most people spend an hour there, and they calculate the room. It’s festive. People come with their whole families. It’s a mixture of people, but it’s generally lively. The artisans get to talk about things that they make every day.”

Twenty percent of the funds received from the purchased items will go to Garden Spot Village’s benevolent fund, monies used to cover expenses for residents who have run out of financial resources. The remainder is used to replenish the artisans’ supplies.

“Everybody feels good about donating to the benevolent fund,” said Boswell. “These are artisans who enjoy making what they make, and they have created such an inventory that they’re happy to share their items. We want to reinforce that this is still fun for us. The goal of the Artisans Corner is not to make money; it’s to enjoy doing what we’re doing.” When it isn’t showcasing its producers’ wares, the Artisans Corner is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Garden Spot Village. Artisans Corner, a small shop packed with crafty items, was established at the village five years ago.

“When we did the showcase last year, we got nothing but positive feedback, so we wanted to do it again,” said Boswell of the 2024 inaugural event. “We got feedback from people who were so enthralled with how some of these things are done. We had some guidance from Garden Spot Village.”

give back. I’ve been out of that situation for seven and a half years, and now I’m deeply involved in the recovery community.”

Musser also spent three years in jail before finding his way to The Potter’s House recovery center and its Jesus Advantage program. Not only did the program change the direction of Musser’s life, but it also changed him.

“I’m a totally different person,” said Musser. “I was clean when I started going there, but I wasn’t an open person. I didn’t like to talk about it. Now, I’m more open. Because of my ministry, I have to give my testimony. I would’ve never done that before Jesus Advantage. That’s how you stay free of what you’re dealing with. The more you talk about what you’re going through, the more people can help you.”

Jesus Advantage is a Christian-based recovery meeting for people with addictions. Musser began going to meetings when Jesus Advantage was started five years ago, and he still attends.

“I worked at The Potter’s House, and that’s how I got involved with Jesus Advantage,” said Musser. “You can go there, be honest about what you’re going through and people will pray for you, and you don’t have to worry about people judging you. You can talk freely about your religion. Their motto is, ‘Get free and stay free.’ It’s big-time accountability,

and it helped change my life.”

“You don’t have to be going to church for us to help you,” Musser added. “When you’re ready for a change, we’ll get you off the street. When people get out of rehab, we stay in touch. It’s a whole process. We help them with anything they need. I want the person struggling on the street to have what I have now. But it takes a good support system like Jesus Advantage. Everybody needs help at some point.”

Musser’s work at The Potter’s House regularly took him to the nonprofit Blessings of Hope. It was there that he met Sarah, who was working at the front desk.

Musser proposed to Sarah at a Jesus Advantage meeting, and now they’ve been married for three years.

“She’s beautiful, and she’s my best friend,” said Musser, a native of the Elizabethtown area. “When I saw her, God told me that’s my wife. When we first started dating, I told her my story. Now, here we are three years later, and I’m living my best life. She’s all in. She’s totally supportive.”

What happens when some of the best high school bands in the region get together to perform? An event that’s full of fun and excitement, said Keara Dagen, co-chair of the Baron Invitational.

“This event is high-energy! It is amazing to witness the hard work of multiple high school marching bands come to fruition on the field,” she said. “These schools have all been working on their shows since before school started and put many hours into perfecting not only the music, but an award-winning show.”

The Baron Invitational will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Manheim Central High School’s Rettew Stadium, 400 Adele Ave., Manheim. Gates are tentatively scheduled to open at 3 p.m. The exact time will be finalized closer to the event.

Eighteen bands will compete in the event, with an additional two performing exhibition shows. Competing bands are from Jersey Shore Area High School, Middletown Area High School, Shamokin Area High School, York Catholic High School, Donegal High School, Big Spring High School, Conestoga Valley High School, Garden Spot High School, Littlestown High School, Twin Valley High School, Conrad Weiser High

School, Greencastle-Antrim High School, Lower Dauphin High School, Cedar Crest High School, Eastern York High School, Red Lion Area High School, South Western High School and Warwick High School. Exhibition bands are from Manheim Central High School and Millersville University.

“Last year, there were 12 bands performing - 10 bands competing, plus Manheim Central and Millersville University as exhibition performers,” Dagen shared. “We are thrilled that this year we have so many more!”

The event is part of the Cavalcade of Bands competition, which features performances at local football stadiums on weekends from September through early November. Bands receive verbal judged commentary and numeric scores as each school has the opportunity to perform in front of large crowds of spectators. The competition groups bands by division, based on the total number of members.

“Competing with other bands is fun, but most bands get satisfaction out of improving their own scores as the season goes on,” Dagen explained. “Since Manheim Central is hosting, they will not be competing. We are excited to host Millersville University’s marching band as an exhibition performance again this year, too! We are looking forward to watching a college-level band perform, as our normal weekto-week experience is with other high schools.”

Food will be available to purchase at the event and will include hot dogs, walking tacos, soups, french fries and baked goods.

This is the 24th year Manheim Central has hosted the event, and it provides a chance for the bands to hone their skills while also having fun, Dagen said.

“Band members are always looking to grow their individual skills and improve their group performance,” she remarked. “Plus, after each band is done performing, they get to watch the other bands perform. There is

program. Their parents see them becoming good people. What we’re doing is building the leaders of tomorrow. We’re building good people, we’re building good parents and we’re building good employees.”

Located at 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township, on the border between Lancaster County and Lebanon County, J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is 1,100 Furnace Hill acres of trees, wildlife, nature and the great outdoors. The facility includes a lake, a pool,

25 miles of hiking trails, a shooting range, a dining hall, 11 camp sites for tenting under the stars and five cabins.

“The kids love the pool, especially in the middle of the summer,” said Klutzaritz. “If you asked five kids what their favorite thing about Camp Mack is, at least three of them are going to give you different answers. In Lancaster County and Lebanon County, we have natural resources. But kids who live in towns and cities don’t get a chance to do

this stuff; they don’t get a chance to be in the woods.”

Among the favorite activities at Camp Mack are fishing, boating, swimming, archery, BB-gun shooting, crafts, human foosball, bike riding, pedal cars and campfires. There are no televisions at Camp Mack, and the cell phone reception is spotty at best, but the facility does offer Wi-Fi.

J. Edward Mack is open year-round but mostly visited during the warmer months.

“Throughout the year, things are happening there,”

said Klutzaritz, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “Primarily, the use of that property is for our Cub Scouts. Some of the Cub Scouts are camping for the first time.”

At the height of the summer, as many as 250 Cub Scouts - boys and girls from kindergarten to fifth grade - frequent Camp Mack each week. Overall, thousands of people visit Camp Mack each year, including Boy Scout troops and other groups from all over Lancaster County and Lebanon County and as far away as Harrisburg and Allentown.

The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is the only Scouting America camp in Lancaster County and one of only a handful in the central Pennsylvania region.

“These young people are boys and girls,” said Klutzaritz. “They’re simply youth who have decided Scouting has a program they want to participate in. They’re learning some skills they don’t even realize they’re learning. They’re learning through fun activities.”

The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation was established in 1969 through a donation by Lancaster County businessman J. Edward Mack, himself a former Eagle Scout. It has been estimated that Camp Mack has impacted nearly 200,000 young lives in a wholesome manner during its existence.

“I want people to know we’re here,” said Klutzaritz. “When I talk to people about Scouting, if they know about it, they have a very high opinion of Scouting. But there are a lot of people who can’t tell you anything about Scouting.”

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster, is one of 248 Scouting America councils in the United States. The local chapter serves over 2,000 youths from Lancaster County and Lebanon County.

“Scouting helps young people become productive and valued members of society,” said Klutzaritz. “Scouting teaches you how to be a well-rounded person. Scouting teaches you things that schools can’t.”

Bands

great camaraderie and support for each other in the marching band community.”

The invitational is a fundraiser for the Marching Barons, who will perform their show based on the theme “Cirque Diabolique.”

“It’s a slightly dark take on the circus,” Dagen said. “The show features different aspects of the circus - arriving on a train, performing under the big top, etc. - but also aims to demonstrate the unsettling feeling of something lurking beneath the surface.”

Under the direction of John Brackbill, the band includes high school students as well as “Super Freshmen,” or eighth-graders who are invited to join the band.

There is an admission charge for the invitational, with separate prices for adults and for students. Proceeds from the event are used by the band booster club to support band programming.

“Some of the financial assistance offered to the marching band through the boosters includes uniforms, music scores, sound equipment, instrument maintenance and support for trips,” Dagen noted, adding that the booster club will also accept donations at www.mcmarching barons.org.

Dagen invites everyone out to the invitational for an entertaining event.

“You will walk away entertained and filled with awe for these young musicians and their directors,” she said. “As a bonus, you will be supporting the Manheim Central marching band’s school-year programming.”
