t may not be as big as the original Liberty Bell, but the message is just as powerful. In New Holland, they’ve always let freedom ring. “I think all of the board members, our museum docents and volunteers believe that history is instructive, it helps unite us and it gives us an appreciation for those who have gone before us to make our community a vibrant and enjoyable place to live,” said Mike Ressler, who’s been the chairman of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) for 10 years. “We learn from our own and others’ mistakes, as well as from the success and triumphs. Understanding our history enables us to know where we have come from, and knowing that will help predict where we are headed.” Located at 207 E. Main St., New Holland, the NHAHS museum’s newest exhibit features a smaller but exact replica of the famous Liberty Bell, one that’s just about as historically significant to the ELANCO area. The Liberty Bell replica was donated to NHAHS by M&T Bank on March 16 of this year, after it had been commissioned to be built by New Holland Farmers National Bank in 1973 to commemorate America’s bicentennial. The replica of the Liberty Bell can be viewed during NHAHS volunteers (from left to right) Brian

Welsh Mountain in New Holland is one of 10 facilities operated by Union Community Care (UCC). It is officially a health care center, but because of its accessibility, familiarity and wealth of services, it’s as close to being a hospital as any facility can get without actually being a hospital. “It’s like a medical office,” said Andrea Murray, Union Community

Care’s director of community impact. “The Welsh Mountain location plays the role of a primary physician. It’s a place you go if you need a wellness check. It’s a place you go if you’re not feeling well. It’s a place to go to maintain your overall health. It’s focused on whole person care.” Located at 584 Springville Road, New Holland, Union Community Care’s Welsh Mountain health Certified medical assistants care center is a 10,405-square-foot Rhodelyn Rivera (left) and Italy

Meta Glasses Help People See Without Their Eyes BY JEFF FALK

Meta glasses do not help those with vision loss see better. Meta glasses are smart glasses that assist the visually impaired to overcome their challenges in alternate ways, navigate their worlds more effectively and make their lives better. “Technology can be a very helpful tool,” said Taylor Newswanger, who’s been a low vision occupational therapist at VisionCorps for 10 years. “There are a lot of low-tech things that can be helpful. But (VisionCorps is) not just about technology. We’re about people and their needs.” VisionCorps, which is located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, does not sell meta glasses - they are available at the offices of local eye doctors and through large retailers like Amazon. But VisionCorps does offer training, advice and consultations about the practical applications and the uses of meta glasses. Newswanger also periodically presents meta glasses as a topic in VisionCorps’ quarterly webinar series VC Presents, which is currently available on www. youtube.com. “Meta glasses work with AI; it’s a camera and a phone,” said Newswanger. “It’s all auditory. The glasses connect to smart phones or tablets, where it gets information. It’s connecting to the internet, and it’s giving you that information. It’s like having Siri or Alexa on your face, and when it’s on your face, it can travel with you. “You can tell the glasses to read a piece of paper for you,” See Glasses pg 5

of care,” continued Murray. “Welsh Mountain is one of our original sites, and Welsh Mountain has this great relationship with that community. When people go in there, they know they’re going to know their providers, and I think that’s really important.” Welsh Mountain’s health care team is headed by providers Erica Lehman and Jeanine Muir, both of whom are certified nurse practitioners. They are supported by a 13-member staff of registered nurses, LPNs, medical assistants and b ehav ioral health professionals. “They are compassionate, trusted members of the community in New Holland,” said Murray. “If you’d go to a local market and say Erica’s name or Jeanine’s name, everybody would know them. That’s intentional in that community. It’s like a community hub. If people need something, they’ll stop in. It’s not only a place to receive medical care; it’s a place to gather.” UCC, which is headquartered at 454 New Holland Ave., Suite 300, Lancaster, operates facilities in Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester counties, including one that provides dental services at 435 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. UCC was conceived in 2020 through the merger of Welsh Mountain Health Center and Lancaster Health Center. “The New Holland Welsh Mountain building dates back to 1969,” said Murray. “It started as a small community clinic that only offered part-time medical services. But it’s evolved to meet what the community needs.” For additional information, go to www.union communitycare.org.

Ceili Band Causes Feet to Move

Members of the Ceili Band play a number at a recent concert. BY JEFF FALK

Music is a series of sounds, notes, beats and rhythms arranged in a way that is pleasing to the ear. But music is also a combination of dozens of different genres culturally influenced by time-honored traditions, not unlike Scottish or Celtic. “We play a variety of Irish and Scottish music,” said Christy King, who’s been the musical director of the Ceili Band for five years. “The music uses ornamentation and rhythms that are very distinct from other music. While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians learning Celtic music, especially for those trained classically.” A part of the Paloma Performance Troupe, the Ceili Band is an independent musical ensemble that also supports the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. After all, what’s dancing without music? The Ceili Band generally practices a couple of times a week, mainly at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. “Our goal is to bring musi-

cians of all ages and musical backgrounds together to learn and enjoy Celtic music,” said King. “The band is also an opportunity for musicians to get experience performing on a stage for an audience.” The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from Lancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, flutes and a double bass. “I think the band is unique in the wide range of ages and abilities,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is welcome to come give the band a try.” In collaboration with the dancers, the Ceili Band performs about four times a year, at venues and events like the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Highland Presbyterian Church and the Maryland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King, “whether you want to dust off your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to See Ceili pg 5

Its Plain Healthy program includes a mobile unit that provides weekly care to members of the local plain community. “We don’t cover everything at New Holland,” said Murray. “We work really close with local health care providers to make sure our patients get the care they need in other services. We would connect (patients) with health providers who offer those services.” The Welsh Mountain medical center in New Holland treats nearly 4,500 patients annually for a variety of ailments, sicknesses and injuries. “New Holland residents are rural residents who face these unique barriers to care,” said Murray, a resident of Palmyra. “ They prefer local, trusted health care providers. Welsh Mountain was created because of those needs. It’s community-based care close to home. “Our Welsh Mountain location is similar to our other locations because it provides 360 degrees

can we help you?’” W i t h e a c h p ro g ra m , WOW works to present information that’s relatable to the audience, whether that’s a group of senior citizens at a retirement community or a bunch of preschoolers. Gilbert noted that feedback the organiz ation receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’” she said. “Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “ We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we can reach the most people and that’s the most convenient for them.” WOW has offered programing to church groups, homeschool co-ops, residents of homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters, schools and more. “ W hatever the group wants, we can design our program to fit their needs,” Gilbert remarked. A nd WOW is always working to expand its repertoire of services. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. She’ll bring a handful of laptops, a WiFi hotspot, a projector and a screen to provide the classes. “We don’t want anything to be a barrier to us coming

in and doing a program,” she said. WOW has also begun offering programs focused on AI, the first Goodwill in the country to do so, Gilbert said.

If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning , AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gil-

bert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location - which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments. “ T h i s i s n’t s o m e o ne coming in with a PowerPoint, giving their presentation and then you never hear from them again,” she said. “Our first priority before educating people is building trust and building that relationship with them. We don’t sell the glasses, but we can help them find vendors, and they can come back and we will help train them with their glasses.” According to VisionCorps, there are nearly 5,000 adults in Lancaster County living with vision loss, and of those adults, 5.4% are over age 65. “(Meta glasses are) popular because they’re afford-

able,” said Newswanger. “Unfortunately, insurance does not view any visual aid as a necessity. It can be easy to use; hands-free is definitely nice, and they’re very stylish. There can be some scary things about AI, but Meta has put privacy features in place. It’s about teaching people how to be smart with AI. We teach you what not to do with them so they can continue to be used for good.” Meta glasses are also the perfect example of the role that VisionCor ps plays in the Lancaster County community. “We just want as many people as possible (to) be aware that vision loss is a difficult journey,” said Newswanger. “It can be scary, but we want to provide guidance so they can be independent on that journey. Vision loss is an age-related disease. Older people didn’t grow up with technology, and sometimes they’re not open to technology. But even if you’re older, you can use it. A lot of our younger clients find it’s really helpful. There are a lot of cool features, and it’s an aid to things.”

VisionCorps’ next VC Presents webinar is titled “Holiday Kitchen Confidence: Cooking and Baking With Vision Loss,” and it will initially be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20. For additional information, go to https://visioncorps.net.

Liberty Bell from pg 1 by special appointment, which can be set up by calling 717-354-2049. “We have a great heritage here,” said Ressler. “ We a r e e n c o u r a g i n g p e ople - adult s , k id s , families - to visit the museum and r ing the bell. It doesn’t have the big, booming, resonate sound that the original m u s t h av e h a d t o b e heard all over Philadelphia, but it has a loud and piercing sound that gets people’s attention. It sounds like a high-quality ship’s bell.” T he orig inal Liber ty Bell measures about three fe e t and thre e inches from the top of its crown to the bottom lip, while New Holland’s replica is about half that length. Both bells are made of bronze, while the original Liberty Bell weighs about 2,080 pounds and the replica checks in at about one-fourth of that

the makers, the Scripture passage from Leviticus, and, of course, the famous and iconic crack,” s a i d R e s s l e r. “ D u r i n g t h e b i c e n te n n i a l , t h e (replica) bell did a lot of traveling. It visited every elementary school in the Eastern Lancaster County School District, as well as Garden Spot High School. It was used by the New Holland Band during the bicentennial p e r fo r m a n c e o f Jo h n Philip Sousa’s famous march, ‘Liberty Bell.’” “ Then it returned to the New Holland Farmers National Bank, where it was on display,” continued Ressler. “Sadly, it remained silent but stayed in the bank even as the bank changed ownership and names several times. That silence ended this past July when the New Holland Band again featured it in Sousa’s great march.”

“I don’t have a count (on the ex act number of items), but I can tell you we are just about busting at the seams,” said Ressler, a resident of New Holland. “We are taking great care to only accept items and archival i n fo r m a t i o n - p h o t o graphs, articles, books - that directly relate to Ne w Hol l and and the surrounding area. With the things that we have, we can really tell the story of the people of our area. “We are working hard to make sure more and m o re p e o p l e d i s co ve r the museum,” continued Ressler. “One of the comments we often hear from visitors is ‘I never knew this was here.’ We have local people visit as well as folks from out of town.” For additional information, go to www.nh historical.com.
