“Lots Of Candy”

AlStoltzfus, one of the organizers of the Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community trick-or-treat alternative, knows all the details about the event, but the one he is most sure of is that there will be plenty of candy. “There are prizes and lots of candy,” said Stoltzfus, who repeated the phrase “lots of candy” a few times during the interview.

This year’s Fall Celebration will be held at the church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The event will include a variety of activities for young children, middle-schoolers, and teenagers, as well as adults both inside and outside the church.

Children’s games and activities that will be available inside the church will include cornhole, a football toss game, a duck pond, a golf putt game, and a lollipop toss, along with face painting.

Outside the church, bounce houses will be set up. Other outdoor activities will include a hayride and a corn dig. Three campfires will be burning, and music will be played.

open at 6 p.m. He noted that the bank has specifically asked for cans of soup. “The food bank is always in need of soup and even more so over the winter months,” he explained.

Asked what inspired him to plan a Journey Through Grief seminar at Christian Fellowship Church, pastor Doug Bozung did not pause a moment. “Coming out of COVID there were a lot of unexpected deaths and a lot of grieving people,” he shared.

The situation had prompted Bozung to invite Tim Sheetz of BASIS, a grief ministry associated

Free food available outside will include hot dogs, french fries, soft pretzels, chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, ice cream, candy, snack items, and hot and cold beverages. Stoltzfus noted that the Auntie Anne’s soft pretzels are one of the most popular items among those served each year.

Organizers have again partnered with the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank to help stock the bank’s shelves. Stoltzfus explained that attendees may bring a canned good to drop off at the registration table, which will

Although a small committee works to put the event together, about 150 volunteers are needed to coordinate the trick-or-treat alternative on the night it occurs. Past events have attracted 800 or more visitors, but Stoltzfus said that organizers are planning for 1,200 people to attend the 2022 Fall Celebration. “We’ve had a terrific response from the community,” said Stoltzfus.

In the case of inclement weather, readers are encouraged to visit www.weaverland.org for information.

On Sept. 11, members and friends of the Evangelical United Methodist Church (EUMC), 276 E. Main St., New Holland, celebrated the 100th

anniversary of the church during the Sunday service. On the same day, the cornerstone of the church, which had been removed, was opened.

“The time capsule had been placed on June 26, 1922, at the original placement of the cornerstone,” explained Sarah Voran, a member of the EUM Futures team. “We were able to remove it and examine its contents.”

Salem

Past Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church bazaars have included a variety of vendors selling homemade and home-based business items. After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 concerns, the event is returning with about 20 vendors, plus George

Cooper, author of the recently published book “Joseph of Nazareth: A Story of Uncommon Love and Faith,” will be there to autograph the story.

The 2022 holiday bazaar will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.

According to Deb Burns, one

of the organizers of the bazaar, among the many crafters will be those who sell jewelry, dog scarves, crocheted items, wood crafts, handmade note cards and greeting cards, wreaths, painted gourds, candles, handmade ornaments, and repurposed wine bottles. Homebased business vendors will sell Avon products, items from Pampered Chef, children’s books, Discovery Toys, Tupperware, and brand-name bags. Each of the vendors will donate an item for the Chinese auction. Winners of the Chinese auction will be announced at 2 p.m. Organizers plan to offer both breakfast and lunch foods for purchase. Individual breakfast casseroles made with potatoes, egg, ham or bacon, and cheese, along with coffee, will be sold for breakfast. Hot dogs and chicken corn soup will be offered for lunch. Chicken corn soup will be sold by the bowl to eat at the bazaar or by the quart to

take out. A variety of baked goods will be available as well.

Cooper explained that his book, about Joseph, earthly father of Jesus, was written in the first person because the Scripture records no words for Joseph. “It’s his voice speaking and the kind of person I think he was,” said Cooper, who was inspired to write about the carpenter 40 years ago by a teenage girl who referred to Joseph as a “wimp.” “That got me started,” recalled Cooper. “I didn’t believe that, but I didn’t have any (proof) to say differently.” What began as an attempt to write a short story grew into 228 pages published in 2021. “The more I researched and read the Scripture and considered what kind of person (Joseph) was, the more alive he became,” said Cooper. “I imagine he was quiet but very strong.” Cooper also noted that he admired Joseph’s treatment of Mary when he discovered that she was pregnant. “He cared for her,” said Cooper, who added, “(Joseph’s) faith shines through it all. He knows who Jesus is, but he knows no one would believe it.”

Three-Dimensional Theater

“This (play) is intended to be enjoyed by all ages,” said Dean Sauder, director of “The House at Pooh Corner,” the Lancaster Mennonite High School fall play.

Sauder mentioned that the show also celebrates the unification of Lancaster Mennonite School’s elementary, middle, and high schools all on one campus. “Since we have elementary kids on campus, we will do a children’s theater for our fall show,” said Sauder.

“The House at Pooh Corner,” based on the stories by A.A. Milne, will be staged in the High Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 27, 28, and 29, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m.

The story of “The House at Pooh Corner” is told through the eyes of 6-year-old Christopher Robin, played by Julia Fisher. On a beautiful morning in the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh, played by Tessa Kennedy; Piglet, played by

Kay Beidler; Eeyore, played by Eli Heinsey; Rabbit, played by Jaz Shanahan; and their friends are called to a meeting by Christopher Robin, who tells them that he will be going away to something called “education.” Grappling with the unknown, they all decide to run away to the South Pole; however, before they can leave, they encounter a bouncy creature, played by Sim Spurrier, who destroys the home of Owl, played by Noah Niehans.

As the 12 cast members rehearse the play, the students are working to create threedimensional characters from the flat ones readers know from books and on the screen. “The one caution I gave them is to develop the character in their own way,” said Sauder.

Facing that challenge, the students are working to portray complexity in the characters while retaining the delight of their simplicity.

Laura Rosario, who plays Kanga, pointed out that the story sometimes presents complex topics through the eyes of a child. “(It’s a challenge) trying to add depth (while) remembering that it’s a kids’ show and Christopher Robin himself is a child,” she noted.

Beidler added that the characters are “very distinct.” “It’s like you’re playing a personality (trait) rather than a character,” said Spurrier, who pointed out that Eeyore represents sadness, Pooh is kindness, and Tigger is energy. “It’s (fun) finding where your character falls on that spectrum,” he said.

Spurrier noted that the characters are iconic and familiar. Fisher agreed, pointing out that all the characters are manifestations of Christopher Robin’s imagination. “It’s difficult to find Christopher Robin’s personality because he doesn’t have a distinct emotion like other characters,” she said. Bei-

dler added that because Christopher Robin created the characters, they are magnified extensions of himself.

Breakout Schedules Second Trunk Or Treat

“We are inviting the community,” said Grace Kieley, office administrator with Breakout Ministries, referring to the church’s second Trunk or Treat event. “It will be out in the parking lot unless it’s raining, and then it will be in the gym.”

Kieley is familiar with having to adjust to inclement weather. The first Trunk or Treat in 2021 was moved inside because of rain. This year’s event is planned for Friday, Oct. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The activity will feature up to 15 decorated trunks, games, candy and other goodies, and food by donation.

Among the trunk decora-

tion themes organizers hope to see will be those based on “The Lion King” and “Monsters Inc.,” along with various cartoon characters.

“Some of the trunks will have games,” reported Kieley, who noted that there will be a coin toss game, a pie-eating contest, and some guessing games as well.

Friendly costumes are welcome, but attendees are asked not to wear scary masks to the event.

This year, organizers are changing things up with a small fundraiser. They will accept donations for hot dogs, snacks, and other food items, and funds raised will be sent to two missions the church supports. One of the missions is the Breakout School of Ministry located in Uganda, and the other is Esther’s Heart, which is in El Salvador.

“We have a pastor we just ordained in El Salvador. We did a mission trip there last year, and we will do another one this year,” said Kieley.

According to

Kieley and fellow organizer

Stephanie Sanchez-Melton, kids of all ages are welcome to attend. Preregistration for the event is not necessary.

Last year, more than 200 attended, and Kieley and Sanchez-Melton hope to see that many again this year.

Readers who want to know more about the church may visit www.breakoutministries.org. Those who have specific questions may call 717-656-8366.

Seminar

Last year, Breakout Ministries’ Trunk or Treat moved inside because of rain, but this year, organizers hope to have 15 decorated trunks in the parking lot of the church.

with Handi-Vangelism of Ephrata, to visit in December 2021 for an evening seminar that introduced Bozung’s Learning to Lament sermon series.

The series led to the scheduling of Journey Through Grief - Help for People in Pain, a seminar at the church, 758 Spruce Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The seminar, which will be led by Tim and Kathy Sheetz, is appropriate for those who are middle school age and older.

Bozung is acutely aware of the pain caused by the pandemic, having lost two friends and church members, but he emphasized that the seminar does not focus only on grieving the loss of a loved one. “That is definitely part of this seminar, but it’s about any sort of loss,” he noted, listing loss of health, finances, a job opportunity, or even a dream.

“There are a lot of ways we suffer loss,” Bozung said,

pointing out that children experience loss in a divorce.

The seminar also helps attendees learn to minister to others experiencing loss. “It’s very comprehensive,” he said.

A notebook of resources is provided for the seminar.

“We will not go through the whole notebook, but there’s a 10-page handout,” said Bozung.

In January, Bozung preached the Learning to Lament series, based on the book “Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy” by Mark Vroegop. “(Vroegop) sees lament as a spiritual discipline that Christians need to develop,” Bozung explained. Spartans Suffer Homecoming Loss to Twin Valley

In a high-scoring LancasterLebanon League football game at New Holland on Friday night, October 6, the Garden Spot Spartans lost to Twin Valley 37-29. It was Garden Spot’s first league loss of the year (3-1) as they fell to 5-2 overall.

The Raiders (4-3, 2-2 league) used a balanced attack, engineered nicely by quarterback Evan Myers, who completed seven passes for 122 yards and ran the ball nine times for 61 yards. Myers scored a rushing touchdown and also connected with the Raiders’ offensive leader Evan Johnson on a 54-yard TD pass.

“Twin Valley presented some mismatches and challenges for us,” Matt Zamperini, the Spartans head coach, said. “We adapted well at times.”

Johnson was part of the challenge the Spartans’ defense faced. He ran for 159 yards on 16 carries, including a touchdown.

It was a 17-14 game in the Raiders’ favor at halftime. The visitors added 13 points in the third quarter on rushing TD’s by Myers and Jayden Goebel.

Leading the Garden Spot offense was quarterback Kye Harting, who threw for 180 yards on 19 completions, including two touchdowns. Harting also ran for 93 yards on 12 carries, scoring a rushing TD as well. Blake Weaver also scored a rushing TD as he gained 60 yards on nine carries.

“The offense put up 416 yards and scored 29 points,” said Zamperini. “Defensively we needed one or two more stops.

“It was a loss where a great deal of wisdom can be

gained,” added the coach. “We kept fighting and gave ourselves an opportunity to try an onsides kick on the final possession to potentially tie the game.”

Weaver’s seven-yard rushing TD tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. Harting’s one-yard sneak again resulted in the Spartans drawing even - 14-14 in the second stanza.

The back-and-forth theme changed to the Raiders gaining momentum in the third quarter and carrying a 30-14 lead into the final period. Harting’s one-yard scoring toss to Weaver and his twoyard TD pass to Trenton Hoober gave Garden Spot a chance. The final Spartan touchdown was followed by a successful two-point conversion of Harting to Weaver.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Following a 3-0 win at Solanco on October 6, the girls’ volleyball team split its next two matches to go to 7-8 (5-8 league).

The loss at Elizabethtown came on Monday, October 10 with Elizabeth Kerin pouring in 14 kills for the Bears.

Avery Smith led Spot with seven kills while Kayla Kaufman had a team-high 15 assists. Mya Paparo added nine digs and Ida Fisher served up two aces.

With Smith registering seven kills and Valeria Martin getting the hot hand at services with eight aces, the Spartans topped Lebanon 25-16, 25-17 and

25-19 on Tuesday.

Kauffman’s 24 assists and 11 blocks by Papas led the team in those categories while Fisher finished with two blocks.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Garden Spot boys’ cross country team edged Donegal 29-30 but came up short against Lampeter-Strasburg in a Section Two race at New Holland on Tuesday, October 11.

In a race that featured four L-S runners taking the top four spots, Alan Krock earned fifth for Spot with a time of 17:57. Gavin Reimers (7th, 17:58) and Josiah Smucker (8th, 18:25) also finished strong.

In the girls’ race, Donegal defeated Spot 16-47 and the Pioneers defeated the Spartans 17-44 as Garden Spot fell to 1-6 on the year.

Julia Hoover’s eighth-place finish at 22:45 was the only top-15 finish for Garden Spot.

BOYS’ SOCCER

In losing a non-league game at home to Daniel Boone on Thursday, October 6, the soccer team fell to 7-7-2 overall. Garden Spot gave up the only goal of the game in the 67th minute of the match.

In league play, the Spartans fell to 4-5-1 with a 4-0 loss at Elizabethtown on Tuesday, October 11. Hayden Flory had three assists for the Bears with four different goal scorers. The Spartans wrapped up the regular season at 7-8-2.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls’ soccer season also came to an end with Garden Spot losing two games by shutouts. On Monday, October 10 and the following evening, the Spartans fell to Governor Mifflin by a 2-0 score and lost to E-town 5-0, respectively.

Garden Spot (3-13-0) fell to 2-8-0 in league play with the loss to E-town. Kylie Hein scored twice for the Bears while Jena Witters scored one goal and registered two assists.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Spartans finished the regular season at 14-3-0 (9-10 league) as they topped Elco 4-1 in the regular season finale. Melanie Esh and Lauren Horning, each of whom also had an assist on the day, as well as Emma Swatski all scored fourth-quarter goals to break a 1-1 tie with the visiting Raiders. Kailen Hibshman scored the only Elco goal.

Morgan Watt scored a firstperiod goal for Spot. Kylee Barshinger and Mary Culbert each notched an assist.

The Spartans ended the season 11th in the District Three Class 2A power rankings. The top 16 teams qualify for district playoffs.

The previous Friday the Spartans defeated Lebanon 60 on the road, outshooting the Cedars 15-1.

Swatski, Barshinger, Horning and sophomore Karis Minninger each scored one goal while Esh finished with two goals. Swatski also dished

out two assists while Morgan Watt and Lacey McCalicher were each credited with one assist.

In this win and the Elco game, goalie Kasey Miller had one save.

Sandwiched between the wins was a 3-1 loss to Octorara on Monday. The Braves tied the highest total of goals scored by a team against Garden Spot this season - Elizabethtown’s season-opening 32 win.

Esh scored the lone Garden goal while Miller made three saves.

QUALITY
ACRES RESTORED
ANTIQUES, PERSONAL PROPERTY
Keystone Military Families’ Stockings For Soldiers initiative sends holiday stockings to those serving in the military.

When the top of the cornerstone was removed, church members were able to retrieve a number of items, including a 1922 silver dollar, a copy of the church’s self-published newspaper, and a copy of the New Holland Clarion.

“Some things fared better than other things,” said Voran of the items in the metal box sealed inside the

stone. “There was a Bible from the 1850s used by one of the first pastors of the church … and that (was preserved) fairly well,” noted Voran, who added that the Bible is written in German because members of the Evangelical United Brethren, which was the original denomination of the church, spoke mostly German in its early years.

Voran gave special credit for removing the cornerstone, which was located near the door of the church facing Main Street, to Jeff Shirk. “He was really instrumental in making that whole process happen,” said Voran, who noted that heavy machinery was involved in the removal.

“The cornerstone is solid granite, so it is extremely heavy. It was quite an undertaking,” she said.

“We had an incredible celebration service,” said Voran of the Sept. 11 worship gathering. “The Rev. Jennifer Freymoyer, UMC West District superintendent, spoke about blessings of God in the past and how we can trust Him in the future,” Voran reported. “It was a wonderful way to celebrate everything (EUMC) has done in the past for the community over the last 100 years and everything we’re going to do in the future.”

Voran recalled that the committee, which includes Jim and Donna Blanshine, Ron Hall, Mary Kilka, Nel Maldonado, Chad Martin, Sarah Shirk, Lori Zimmerman, pastor Richard Connor, and church secretary Leigh Bellini, in addition to Voran, began meeting in 2020 shortly before COVID19 restrictions were put into place. “We were still able to celebrate as we originally intended, (but) we had to put a pause on the planning process until about six months ago,” said Voran. “We wanted to really celebrate the past of our church but also how that past will impact the future of our church and of the New Holland community.”

With that thought in mind, Voran explained that the work of the committee is far from finished. “The team will meet and decide what types of things (to put into the cornerstone) to help people 100 years from now get a glimpse of what our church was like in 2022,” said Voran. “We would like potential thoughts on what we should include.”

More information about the church may be found by visiting https://newholland eumc.com or www.facebook .com/EUMCNH.
