Pathways Heritage Day can’t transport visitors back in time. But the event can make history come to life.
“If you don’t take advantage of the knowledge of history, you’re going to repeat it,” said Ron Schlegel, a Pathways Heritage Day board member and team member. “We’re trying to present this idea of history from a familial perspective. The best part of it is seeing the smiles on people’s faces, just seeing families and the interactions of people with each other.”
Pathways Hybrid Learning Community will conduct the seventh edition of its annual Heritage Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday,
Oct. 18, at the historic Brubaker Homestead, 414 Long Lane Road, East Earl. The sponsored event, which is free to attend and offers
free parking, serves as a public learning event, a community outreach and a fundraiser for the hybrid micro-school.

They got the band back together.
Formed in 1975 while students at Hempfield High School, members of the group Andora reunited in 2022, and it feels so good.
Andora consists of Lancaster Township resident Thomas Richards, who sings and plays the rhythm guitar; Ron Sharpe of Millersville, who plays the bass and sings; East Earl resident David Chambers, who does vocals and plays the guitar; and drummer Curt Ruhl of Denver. Richards and Chambers started playing music together in East Petersburg when they were approximately 10 years old. “We had the entire band packed in a little red wagon,” said Richards. “It was one drum, one cymbal, (Chambers’) amp, and a guitar.”

A weekend of activities has been planned at Conestoga Christian School (CCS) on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18. Events will include a chicken barbecue, alumni activities and the school’s 52nd annual auction. Community members are welcome to participate.
Sharpe and Ruhl joined about six years later. “I don’t know how we all got together, but I do remember that the first big thing we played was a Battle of the Bands at Hempfield High School,” Richards said. “We had a very unusual rehearsal spot. We rented a storage unit at a place called Stowaway. I think they had one plug for power, no heat. But we’d rehearsed there, and we rehearsed at somebody’s house. We played a Battle of the Bands, and we won.”
The group settled on the name Andora, but the details are a bit fuzzy. Sharpe pointed out that on the television show “Bewitched,” Samantha’s mother’s name is Endora. There is a country on the Iberian Peninsula named Andora.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Dated articles, highlighting local activities and events, and undated articles of general interest are used as space allows. Related photographs of good quality, with complete identification, are encouraged.
The event will begin with the chicken barbecue dinner on Oct. 17. Diners may purchase their chicken in a drive-through format from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or they may choose to dine in the school gymnasium from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
“People can go to our school website and place an online order. You get an order number, and then you can just drive up to our front parking lot, and we will get your order ready for you,” explained Elisha Hall, CCS events coordinator. “We
have the dine-in option in case there are families who want to reconnect and come back and visit the school.”
Also on Oct. 17, a gift certificate store will be open outside the school, and then it will move inside to the gymnasium at 4 p.m. There will also be homemade apple dumplings available for purchase. There will be a set price to purchase a pan with eight dumplings each.
After the barbecue, there will be an alumni celebration, with activities located behind the school.
First up will be a student Powderpuff Football Championship, followed by an alumni soccer game. “We already have alumni signed up,” Hall noted.
On Oct. 18, breakfast items and individual apple dumplings will be offered for sale at the Cougar Cafe. There will also be a Cougar Grounds coffee area offering hot coffee, cold brew, hot cider and hot chocolate.
The live auction on Oct. 18 will be held from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold. On the auction block will be handmade quilts, experiences and
homemade jams and yogurt. Also featured will be artwork, some made by the students themselves. Eighth-grader Ella Perechinsky created a painting for the auction that features a colorful sunset done in acrylics. The artwork also includes Psalm 19:1, which states, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork.” “I drew it first with pencil, and then I went over it with paint,” Ella noted. In addition, each class at the school has designed a themed basket for the auction. Basket themes this year will include Date Night, Relaxation and Wellness, Backyard Fun, Fall Fun, Road Trip and A Hunting We Will Go. “Our class baskets are always a big hit,” said Hall. “Each grade level comes up with a theme. The senior class always does a College Ready basket with sheets for a college dorm bed, a (coffee maker) and a microwave - things you need for your dorm room.”
Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM
Each year, there is also a “paddle raise” during the auction for a special project. “This year’s (special project) is to hopefully install a high-visibility digital sign in front of campus,” Hall said, noting that sign will share event announcements, celebrate student accomplishments and keep families informed about events.
An online auction will be offered this year as well. Bidding will start on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8 a.m. and run through Thursday, Oct. 23, at 8 p.m. Bidders can visit www.conestoga christian.net for more details and bidding access.
Proceeds from the weekend will be used to support the financial operations of the school, which offers classes for students in preschool through 12th grade. The weekend’s events will be held rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors.
The school is located at 2760 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown. For complete details about the barbecue and auction and to order chicken in advance, visit www.conestoga christian.net/bbqauction.
Overflow parking and a shuttle service will be available at Conestoga Mennonite Church, which is located across the street from the school.
“Somehow we got to talking and came up with Andora instead of Endora,” said Sharpe.
Andora performed together for 18 months. Then, as Journey sang in 1983, the members went their “separate ways.” Some members even sold their equipment while others performed in different bands.
The quartet mostly kept in contact, and Richards reached out to his bandmates after seeing an advertisement for an open mic night. As Jake Blues said to his brother, Elwood, in the movie “Blues Brothers,” “Hey, man, we’re getting the band back together.”
“Once you’ve played, you always have the bug to play,” Richards said. “Once you perform, you always want to perform. I thought maybe we could get together for the open mic night.”
He went to work. “I knew where Dave was, so I called Dave, and I knew how to get hold of Ron,”
Richards recalled. The three met at the Hurricane Grill & Tavern in Columbia, fitting since Andora has been rocking people like a hurricane ever since. “We decided on three or four songs that we still remembered, and we played,” said Richards. “It was fun as usual, and then the phone calls started. Do we want to do this again?”
The answer to that question was the same as the correct response to “Who sang ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart?’” - Yes.
Andora traveled to the beat of a different drum(mer) during the first show back. “When we did the first open mic, we hadn’t contacted Curt yet,” Chambers said. “We didn’t know where he was, so we had a stand-in drummer just for that open mic night. Then we decided we’re going to get hold of Curt and we’re all going to get together.”
Andora members met at Chambers’ house to review music, brainstorm, and play some tunes. Ruhl
didn’t have his drum set with him, so he used baby toys as shakers to keep rhythm.
Sharpe said the band members agreed they would go back to their (grass) roots. They concluded, “Let’s live for today, but play music from our youth. “We wanted the band to be nothing but the ’70s, what we experienced in our high school days,” Sharpe said. “We did incorporate a few of the songs that we played back then, but we wanted to be nothing solely but ’70s classic rock, because that was basically
what we listened to during our teenage years. We’ve stuck to that, and our followers know when they come, they’re going to take a trip down memory lane and they’re going to hear ’70s classic rock. We try to give them all the songs that are sing along and danceable. You know the lyrics; you can dance to it. You’re going to have a good time. Granted, our key audience is 50-plus. But I think classic rock spans the generations.”
Richards added, “It’s been said
of the band that we are like a time machine.”
Some of their equipment remains from the first iteration. Chambers still plays the same 1970 Gibson SG guitar he was gifted by his dad at the age of 14.
Ruhl’s father helped him purchase a new set Ludwig blue Vistalite drums. He sold them after the group disbanded. “I wanted to get another set of Vistalites to go back in time, like we did, with our performances. I finally found another set (in Pittsburgh), and that’s what we use today. They’re getting hard to find. That means a lot to me, those drums.”
Andora has monthly shows planned into the spring. “We try to limit it to one performance a month for three reasons,” Sharpe said. “One, we hope we can remember enough music to play one performance a month. Two, can our knees take the loading and the unloading for more than one performance a month? There’s a lot of gear that we move in and out, even at our age, and that’s the other one, our age. If the gig goes past 9:30 (p.m.), we all get sleepy.”
Andora will play Friday, Oct. 17, from 8 to 10:30 p.m. at Red Pin Bar & Grill, 1495 Millport Road, Lancaster; Friday, Nov. 21, from 8 p.m. to midnight at Riverside Camping Association, 730 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster; Friday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 10 p.m. at Elizabethtown Moose Lodge, 126 Maytown Road; Friday, Feb. 6, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Ephrata Amvets, 614 S. “The atmosphere is going to be in tune with the heritage of the area up until the 1900s,” said Schlegel. “Pony rides, horse-drawn wagons and ice cream makingpeople are going to be immersed in and engaged in all of those types of things. The homestead is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, so you’re away from traffic or anything modern. The focus is on being accurate, educational and entertaining.”
Pathways Heritage Day is designed to provide visitors with a glimpse into what frontier life looked like in northeast Lancaster County and southwest Berks County from the middle of the 18th century until the onset of the 20th century. With
the assistance of Pathways students, nearly 300 presenters, enactors, craftsmen, tradesmen and military personnel will offer a variety of presentations on everything from blacksmithing to gun making, from beekeeping to spinning and weaving, from hide tanning to antique farm equipment.
“Students are involved, but we have very talented adults who will lead the charge on this,” said Schlegel. “It’s an event where the adults are the primary interpreters who are showing what happened during those years. People will be talking to folks about what they do. People will be up on stage giving 25-minute presentations on history. Many
of the interpreters communicate in first person and talk in the fashion of how people would’ve spoken years ago.”
But there are also interactive pieces to Pathways Heritage Day. The event will also feature contests, encampments, children’s activities, activities for adults, open-fire cooking, storytelling, a test of survival skills, a woodlands walk challenge and music.
“It goes without saying how complex this thing is,” said Schlegel. “Just as the name implies, we’re looking at the heritage of the upper Cocalico Valley. We have the heritages of Mennonite, Anabaptist, English, German, and we melt them together into this event. Around

1740 or 1750, the area was basically the frontier, and eventually people started to settle in this area.”
More than 4,000 people from Lancaster, Berks, Chester and Lebanon counties are expected to attend Pathways Heritage Day.
“It’s a community endeavor, and it involves many different organizations,” said Schlegel. “It started with the faculty and their ideas. They just wanted to take those educational points and present them to the community. Our students become very engaged in various aspects of the event, and they learn to communicate very clearly and closely with individuals. It’s a learning process for our students as well.”
Pathways Hybrid Learning Community operates a high school at 414 Long Lane, East Earl, and a middle school and elementary school at 432 Reading Road, East Earl. The 75 students in kindergarten through 12th grade who attend Pathways complete their educations and schoolwork both independently and collectively at home and at school.
“We’re not a homeschool. We’re a hybrid mini-school,” said Schlegel. “It’s not a very large operation, but we focus very intently on the students we have. It’s about having interactions with the students. We’re very active in the community as part of the learning focus for our students.”

At Salem Hellers Church, faithfulness is a two-way street. It’s a road that church members have been navigating every day for the last three centuries. And it’s a type of faithfulness worth celebrating.
“I don’t want to talk about our faithfulness to God,” said Joann
Cooper, a longtime member of Salem Hellers Church and the head of the planning committee for the upcoming celebration. “God has been faithful to this church and kept it together. For some reason, He’s been faithful in keeping this little church on the hill going.”
That 300-year-old faithful pact between God and the church’s members will be just one of the

“I think it’s a congregation that seeks to serve the Lord and that cares very deeply about one another,” said McLain, a resident of East Lampeter Township. “We constantly hear that the church is friendly to outsiders. The Gospel is preached every Sunday, and people are reminded why they need Jesus as a Savior.”
“With our location on the hill, we hope that our church building
is a lighthouse for the community,” said Cooper. “Throughout the years, we’ve had various concerts, and we’ve helped out in the community. We’ve also had fun days for kids. For many years, we’ve been giving to local ministries.”
After meeting for worship in neighbors’ homes, German settlers to the Conestoga Valley area built a permanent log cabin house of worship near the Jacob Heller family farm in the early 1700s. The present sanctuary was constructed

“Many people from the Germanic cultures came to the United States because of religious persecution, and many settled in the Conestoga Valley area,” said Cooper. “They began coming in the 1700s, and they settled in a 20-mile area. Because transportation was slow, meeting places had to be close by. We had a very humble beginning with a log cabin with dirt floors and slab seats. If you look at the level of sanctuary we have today, it’s been quite the evolution.”
“I think Salem Hellers is following the trajectory of what you see in society,” said McLain. “Not as many people go to church as they used to. Certainly, in the 1700s, it was different and everyone went to church.”
