What’s unclear is if Lancaster County is so generous because there are so many great causes out there, or if there are so many great causes because Lancaster County residents are so altruistic. “Lancaster County is a frugal county,” said David Kieffer, pastor of Ephrata R e for me d P re sby te r i a n Church and president of Faithful Give. “Residents are generous, but they’re not foolish with their donations. Cabaret is a French word. Translated, it means a small room, a little tavern, or a shop that sells spirits. Reji Woods translates it as a lively stage performance, an energetic floor show that features dancing, comedy and singing. “Audiences can expect a fun time full of joy and See Reji Woods pg 2 Reji Woods Productions performs at a local venue.
Je n e a n F i n l e y i s a s e l fproclaimed history buff. During her upcoming presentation, Finley is hoping to encourage, inspire and pass along her passion for the past. “I’m a nose-in-a-book history nerd who was a history major,” said Finley. “I’m hoping it will intrigue people with a sense of awe and childhood wonder. Remember when you were a kid in a cornfield and you came across a rock that you thought might have been an arrowhead? I’m going to talk about people who lived here before us. I genuinely hope that’s what draws people in.” Finley’s presentation titled ‘300 Years: Setting the Stage’ is part of the New Holland Area Historical Society ’s inspirational lecture series. She will give her local Native Americanfo c u s e d t a l k at 7 p . m . o n Thursday, Oct. 22, inside The Chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The event is free to attend, and the public is welcome. “I really hope the material will be interesting,” said Finley. “It’s a topic that can be controversial. I want to use great materials that are fact-based. Maybe there are things people don’t know about the area. I hope the information is fascinating.” Finley’s presentation, which will be supported by artifacts from NHAHS’ museum, will be conversational in nature and last for about 45 minutes. At the end, time will be set aside for questions, answers, discussion and personal reflections. See Finley pg 5

exuberance, excellent voices and killer musicians,” said Woods. “We truly love to connect with our audiences and raise the roof, and boy oh boy do we ever. Audiences are everything. They are why we do what we do, and without them Reji Woods Productions wouldn’t exist. Providing fun, quality entertainment is why I started this, and it’s all I have ever wanted to do.” Woods is the executive director, creative director and driving force behind Reji Woods Productions, a local cabaret-style entertainment company. In addition to cabarets tailored to audiences’ preferences, Reji Woods Productions produces youth programming, musicals, plays, showcases, concerts and revues. “I believe that entertainment brings us together in a very divided world,” said Woods. “Music shows us our commonalities as a people and helps promote emotional response. It honestly is the universal language. Theater can entertain and educate because we as theater performers hold a mirror to society, showing the
current state of things while offering hope for a better tomorrow. Dance can bring awe like nothing can, with the simple use of the human body. All these forms of performing arts are storytelling at their core and can offer audiences the chance to escape the harsh realities of life, if just for a moment. The performing arts can change lives.” Reji Woods Productions works with and collaborates with a diverse group of performers and artists from the Susquehanna Valley and beyond. Some are professionals, some are students and some are co-workers, but Woods considers all of them friends. “Many people know me as a performer in the area, and much of that work has been done under the Reji Woods Productions banner,” said Woods, a resident of Ephrata. “So, I hope that translates to knowing the company. I think what they should know and expect from Reji Woods Productions is that every show is programmed by me and filled with genuine love, care and a desire to give our audiences a good time. We have

Outdoor Fun for Everyone BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities can enjoy a long weekend of guided programming set against the backdrop of the Susquehanna River when Keystone Trails Association (KTA) hosts its annual Hiking & Outdoor Weekend. The main event will run from Friday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 25, with an optional extended weekend add-on beginning Thursday, Oct. 22. Base camp for the weekend will be the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, where KTA will be set up at the outside pavilion. “We welcome folks to stop by, whether they’re registered for the weekend activities or not, to meet us and hear about the work we do throughout the commonwealth,” said Kate Prisby, manager of events and programs for KTA. “Each year we work with volunteers to maintain hundreds of miles of PA hiking trails, offer skills-based training to prepare hikers for safe adventures outdoors, and we provide single-day and weekend events open to the public.” As Prisby explained, the week-

Since then, it has realized a fair share of success by adopting a people-first, community-oriented attitude. “The best part of Reji Woods Productions is the people,” said Woods. “Whether it’s the people I share the stage with or the audiences we entertain, it’s all about connection, and that’s the best part. My favorite thing to do, however, is to perform. Singing and connecting with an audience is the lifeblood of my existence. Since I was 9 years old, singing has brought me immeasurable joy.” For more information, visit www.rejiwoodsproductions.com.
end will feature more than 50 events throughout the region. “In the Columbia area, there are walking tours discussing the region’s Underground Railroad history, a film screening, a wildlife animal rehab program to inform folks on what to do if they find an injured animal, rail trail bike rides and lots of hikes,” she said. Additional activities include river paddling and boat tours, overnight backpacking trips, nature journaling and field sketching workshops, yoga and a mushroom identification walk. Evening programming includes a keynote dinner on Friday at John Wright Restaurant and a Saturday social at Columbia Kettle Works, which is brewing a special beer for the weekend, with proceeds benefiting KTA. “Keystone Hiking & Outdoor Weekend invites folks to get outside and explore the Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape in Lancaster and York counties,” Prisby said. “The Susquehanna is one of the oldest rivers in the world, and it has played a key role in shaping the region’s history, identity and landscape.” KTA has held a fall hiking weekend since its inception in 1956. This is the third year the organization has organized a weekend of activities beyond hiking in an effort to welcome more people outdoors. Prisby explained that Pennsylvania has eight designated Conservation Landscapes, including lands owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape is roughly the five miles on either side of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster and York counties. “This is our second time in the Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape, and the decision See Outdoor pg 3

Outdoor from pg 2 to return largely was based on enthusiasm from program partners we worked with in 2024, asking to bring the event back to the region,” Prisby remarked. “When the event was here in 2024, there were great reviews from attendees and those that offered activities during the weekend.” Based in Harrisburg, KTA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building, maintaining and protecting hiking trails across Pennsylvania while promoting responsible use of the state’s natural resources. “If you’ve been hiking for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve walked down a trail that Keystone Trails

Association has helped maintain,” Prisby said. “If you’re new to hiking, we love welcoming folks out on trails with us and helping people find others to get outside with.” Adding a fourth day to the event this year offers participants an opportunity to come early and take part in hands-on stewardship events or spend a night backpacking on the Mason-Dixon Trail. People are invited to come for one or all four days of the festivities, and about half of the activities are appropriate for families with children. Details of each activity note if the event is good for children, accessible or dog friendly, Prisby said.

United Women of Faith Pay Education Forward BY JEFF FALK
“My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” That biblical passage provides words for members of Bird-In-Hand United Methodist Church’s United Women of Faith to live by. By applying actions to them, the small group of believers makes a big impact on the world around them, not the least of which are their faith-based missions. “Even though we’re a small church,
we can do big things,” said Jo Miller, who’s been the church’s mission coordinator for the last eight years. “It’s not just to better people’s lives; it’s to give people hope. It’s just making sure people know that other people care for them. That’s what we’re in this world for, to show the love of Jesus Christ.” The United Women of Faith’s latest mission project doesn’t really have an official or formal name, but it’s centered around sewn fabric school bags,

educational supplies and providing eager students the tools they need to learn. “My favorite part is just getting other people involved and passing along the knowledge of how they can help other people,” said Miller. “We are so blessed in this country. I want people to know how much good we can do with a simple bag of school supplies.” Miller and fellow United Women of Faith members Marge Denlinger
and Audrey Miller have sewn more than 200 drawstring school bags. Each of those bags was filled with four spiral notebooks, eight unsharpened pencils, one metal pencil sharpener, a dozen colored pencils, a single pink eraser, four pens and one 12-inch ruler that also includes metric markings. Once the cloth bags were packed with the items - all of which were donated by members of the church’s congregation or purchased through

Pathways Heritage Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the historic 1791 Brubaker Homestead, 414 Long Lane, East Earl. Sponsored by Pathways Hybrid Learning Community, the noncommercial, family-friendly event aims to inspire students’ passion for history while helping parents nurture historical appreciation in their family life and local heritage. More than 400 historians, artisans, re-enactors and interpreters will share information about life in southwestern Berks County and northeastern Lancaster County from the 1740s to the mid-1900s. The event will include a trapper village, Revolutionary and Civil War military unit encampments, and an 1880s farmstead, as well as opportunities to learn about Lenni Lenape heritage. Local historical sites and organizations will be represented, including Cornwall Iron Furnace, Epler’s one-room schoolhouse, the Conrad Weiser Homestead, and Historic Ephrata Cloister. Attendees may participate in competitions, and children and adults may enjoy interactive activities. All of the aforementioned festivities will wrap up at 4 p.m. Entertainment will be presented on the Commons Stage.

Diners may purchase their chicken in a drive-through format from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or they may choose to dine in at the school gymnasium from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Also on Friday evening, there will be an alumni soccer game followed by a powderpuff football game. “We have a dine-in option, and that’s nice because it gives families a chance to come to campus and eat with us,” said Elisa Hall, events coordinator at the school. “Then, a lot of people head outside, out back to the soccer field for the soccer game and the powderpuff game.” The live auction on Saturday will be held from 9 a.m. until the last item is sold. On the auction block will be experiences, tickets to local attractions, memorabilia and more. Two big-ticket annual items are getaways to a beach property in Florida and a lakefront property in Tennessee. Also featured will be artwork, some made by the students themselves. Each grade level at the school will also be doing baskets, which range from fire pits to canoes to traditional baskets. “We also had homemade jam by a great-grandmother this year,” Hall said. “A lot of the class baskets have tickets to different things.” Like last year, an online auction will be offered as well. Bidding will start on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 a.m. and run through Thursday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. Bidders can visit www .conestogachristian.net/bbq auction for online bidding, as well as to obtain tickets to the barbecue. Weather permitting, the weekend will be closed with a helicopter candy drop on one of the auxiliary athletic fields. Proceeds from the weekend will be used to support the financial operations of the school, which See CCS pg 8

Women from pg 3 Women of Faith have made and donated about 3,600 bags filled with school supplies. One year, the group made nearly 400 bags alone. “I think you have to consider that some of these children are orphans and some of the families are making a couple of dollars a day,” said Miller. “How are they going to afford to buy these supplies? We don’t ever consider the lives that these people lead. It could come down to food or these school supplies.” In addition to the sewn fabric
school bags mission project, the United Women of Faith are also altruistically linked to the East Clay Street Low Barrier Emergency Shelter in the city of Lancaster, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, Water Street Mission and the nonprofit Unto in Mount Joy.
“I’m a mission person,”said Miller.“I love to do something to help someone else. It doesn’t matter your age or what you can do, you can always show the love of Jesus Christ to others.” For additional information, search for “Bird-In-Hand United Methodist Church” on Facebook.

tries, nonprofits and social service organizations have registered to be a part of Faithful Give. The funds that they receive allow those organizations to provide broader, deeper and more impactful services and programs, as well as to reach more individuals in need. “They are people from organizations who love God and love Lancaster County,” said Kieffer, a resident of Manheim Township. “They’re people who make Lancaster County a great place to live and raise a family. They’re people who have inherited a great legacy and want to pass that legacy on to the next generation.” Following some exploratory research, the initial Faithful Give event was staged in 2023. Over the last three years, the fundraising and giving initiative has raised more than $4.4 million for the underresourced. “Every year we’ve set a goal and God has surpassed it. This year, we’ll see what God will do,” said Kieffer. “When we started, I wasn’t sure it was going to fly. Certainly, God has done more than we have asked, thought or imagined. It has served our community. It’s provided connection, advocacy and celebration. It’s just been a blessing.”

One of the neat things we’ve seen is the networking that has come out of it. The Celebration Expo is a full, family event. Families get a chance to spend a night out.
