Jordan Scott Gilbert, director of the Cavod Theatre production of “A Tale of Two Cities,” thinks that staging the musical in the small theater will only enhance the telling. “It’s a big show that we are trying to make intimate in this small space, which is great for storytelling,” said Gilbert, who was the assistant producer of the show on Broadway. Gilbert chose “A Tale of Two Cities” along with Cavod artistic director Monica DePaul and Connie Dienner, director of Cavod Performing Arts.

“A Tale of Two Cities” will be presented at the Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a special opening night themed dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Cocktail attire is requested for this red carpet event. The show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21; at 2 and 7 p.m. on

Saturdays, Oct. 15 and 22; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Oct. 16 and 23.

“A Tale of Two Cities” with book, music, and lyrics by Jill Santoriello is based on Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel that tells the tale of a love triangle. The story focuses on the beautiful Lucie Manette, played by Jackie Zliczewski; French aristocrat Charles Darnay, played by Alexander Weaver; and English cynic Sydney Carton, played by Bryant Martin. Walter Winston O’Neill, who took part in the Broadway production, will play Dr. Manette. Alicia Burton will play Miss Pross, and Hannah Rau will portray Madame Defarge. Set during the French Revolution, the story encompasses love and redemption in a way that parallels Cavod’s mission. The show is choreographed by Stephanie Brooks Martin, with musical direction by Amy Rau. Glen Brodersen of Sight & Sound Theatre is handling the set.

According to Brian Frankhouser, member of the board of trustees of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS), teenagers in the mid-1800s maybe were not so different from today. John H. Hull, who would have been about 18 in 1850, carved his first and middle initials, and his last name into a brick on the Railroad Avenue side of the Kauffman Building. In 1850,

According to Wanda Swarr, founder of Pathways school, Heritage Day began as a way for students to demonstrate what they had learned. The school invited a few re-enactors and demonstrators to join in the encampment. “That (first) year, we had a couple hundred people here, but it has just exploded and it’s so much fun,” recalled Swarr.

This year’s fourth Heritage Day will be held at the school’s Brubaker Homestead campus, 414 Long Lane,

Strengthening Families

“The families who have done it love it,” said Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries. “Some have done it twice because they love it so much.”

Meredith Burnett, school social worker with the Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), agreed. “It really helps with communication going into the teen years,” she said.

Strengthening Families is a seven-week, evidence-based program developed 30 years ago by Iowa State University for families with children ages 10 to 14. In PVSD, the program, which is fully funded by a Penn Medicine Lancaster grant, is held at the Together Community Center, where it represents a partnership between Lancaster General Health, The Factory Ministries, and COBYS.

“It’s considered highly preventive for drug and alcohol abuse among participants, and research has shown there’s even a ripple out effect from children who go through the program to their friends,” reported Burnett. Facilitators, who undergo training sessions to take part, include Factory staff, community members, teachers, and Penn Medicine staff members.

The program, which has been in place in the district for about five years, aims to help parents and caregivers learn nurturing skills they may use to support their children, and to teach them how to effectively discipline and guide their children. It also aims to give youths a healthy future orientation and an increased appreciation of their parents and caregivers and to teach them skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure.

Calling the show “vocally challenging,” Gilbert relayed that the cast is doing a “really awesome job.” “There are some cast members who are perfect for their roles,” he noted of the cast of nearly 30. “My point of view with the storyline is God working in people, specifically the lead character (of Sydney Carton) to bring him to a place of faith,” continued Gilbert. “I think it will be very moving and show the audience the depths people will go to save those that they love.”

Dienner said that the show is a bit different for Cavod because

there are dark moments. “It can be hard to find shows with redemptive meaning,” she said, adding, “To show the redemption, you have to show the evil.” Dienner said the show is for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised. She compared the show to another classic by Victor Hugo, “Les Miserables.” “It has a lot of the same feel (because) it’s speaking from the heart,” said Dienner.

East Earl, on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission or parking. “We have a lot of demonstrators and interactive events,” noted Swarr.

Swarr pointed out that students and demonstrators will be dressed in Colonial garb or in pre-1840s costumes. Encampments will include a furtraders encampment and a pre1840s encampment. A Civil War reenactors group will also be on-site. “We are trying to interpret history in southeastern Pennsylvania through the years,” explained Swarr, who noted that a Native American interpretive area was student-developed. “They said ‘We know (Native Americans) were here. Why aren’t we interpreting Native American history and not just European settlers?’” reported Swarr.

Activities for people of all ages are planned, including Colonial games, along with a scheduled tugof-war and sack races. Swarr pointed out that visitors can try candle dipping, paper making, stirring a big pot of soup, or shooting a traditional longbow on the archery range. “We have tomahawk throwing,” she said. “We had it before it became the ‘in’ thing.”

One interactive competition is a Woods Walk, which is a contest for adults and teens. Groups of four walk through the woods visiting five stations, where each participant earns points to determine how well they could each could survive on the frontier. “Above a certain number of points is a mountain man,” said Swar, who noted other designations include flat-landers and 6 feet under. Last year’s winner of the contest received a lantern handmade by one of the students.

“We have Colonial skills through the early 1900s,” said Swarr, who noted that wagon and tractor rides and story trails will be part of the event. Story trails will involve pages on posts to read on a walk. Last year, one story trail had a Native American theme, and the other was an environmental walk around the pond. She also hopes to have storytellers and musicians on-site.

Food items that will be available for purchase will include soups, chili, hot dogs, and sub sandwiches, along with baked goods and ice cream made with hit-and-miss engines.

In conjunction with Heritage Day, a handmade, flint-knapped knife, which was made by a Native American interpreter specifically for Pathways to use as a fundraiser will be auctioned online. Readers may visit www.learningatpathways.org for more information.

“In the past, visitors have said it feels like a real community,” recalled Swarr. “It’s a very familyfriendly (event) because we have activities for all ages.”

he, or possibly his father, wrote his name on a board that Steve Loewen discovered in 1987 when he was remodeling 331 E. Main St., New Holland. “(Hull) had a lot of spunk,” said Frankhouser. “He was the type of teenager who put his name places. That’s my opinion.”

Loewen found the board in a wall near the fireplace. “That’s when I discovered that my building was built to be the (Trinity) Lutheran (Church) parsonage in August of 1850,” Loewen said. There is some discrepancy as to whether the same John Hull who put his name on the brick also wrote his name in the manse. “There was no ‘John H. Hull’ listed (in the 1850 census),” noted Frankhouser. However, a “John H. Holl,” a 17-year-old student, was listed, and his father was listed as “John Holl,” a house painter. “I think it’s pretty obvious that the father painted the Lutheran parsonage. However, it’s not obvious who put their name on the board. Was it the father or the son?” asked Frankhouser, who

explained that the name Holl morphed into Hull as time passed.

John H. Hull (the son) grew up in New Holland, and he lost his right arm as a child in a firearm accident during a July Fourth celebration. He became a schoolteacher and later moved to Allentown. According to his obituary, he worked as a bookkeeper, and he was active in politics. When he died, he was a widower who left several children.

According to Frankhouser, much of the information available about Hull and others who lived in New Holland in the same time period came from a man who left New Holland at the age of 23. William W. Davis was born in New Holland in 1836, and his family lived at 224 E. Main St. In 1855, when a group of 72 residents migrated west from New Holland to settle in Sterling, Ill., the Davis family was among them. “This was the biggest migration from New Holland ever,” said Frankhouser, who noted that Davis did not leave with his family until after he completed his final term at Franklin & Marshall College, where he spoke at his graduation ceremony in 1856.

According to NHAHS docent Ron

Dyer, Davis’ subject was “Decline of Political Integrity,” and future president James Buchanan was in the audience.

“(Davis) is significant to this story because if it weren’t for him, we would know little of New Holland in the 1840s,” said Frankhouser, who explained that Davis continued to receive The Clarion. “Davis lived to be 88 years old,” said Frankhouser, who added that as New Hollanders in his age group died, Davis sent letters to The Clarion sharing information about their lives.

Barshingers’ Hat Trick Sparks 10-0 Spot Victory

Garden Spot’s field hockey team improved to 3-0-0 in L-L League play with an 11-0 victory over Lebanon on Friday, September 23 at home. It was yet another stingy game for the Spot defenders, who have notched six shutouts in 10 matches (8-2-0 overall).

“Defensively, we have given up seven goals on 26 shots in the last 10 games,” head coach Katy Eby noted. “Our back line is doing a phenomenal job slowing the play before the circle and not allowing many opportunities.”

The defense prevented the Cedars from taking any shots on goalie Kasey Miller.

“Kasey has done a great job and is getting the support of our defensive players,” Eby added.

Kylee Barshinger notched a hat trick while Lacey McCalicher tallied two goals and assisted on four. Liby Kauffman and Mary Culbert also scored twice. Melanie Esh chipped in with one score and four assists.

Lauren Horning (1g, 1a) and Emma Swatski (1a) also contributed.

“The girls were able to try some new things offensively,” Eby added, “and we were able to get all available players into the varsity game, which helps develop confidence for our underclassmen.”

In their next league match - a home game with Octorara on Tuesday - the Spartans earned another shutout. With two goals scored in each quarter, they defeated the Braves 8-0.

Esh (2, 2) and Horning (2, 1) scored multiple times while McCalicher, Kauffman, Swatski and Ali Sensenig each netted one goal. McCalicher and Erin Hamer each had one assist while Barshinger recorded two.

This shutout came with three saves by Miller in goal.

FOOTBALL

Kye Harting threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score in Garden Spot’s 44-0 defeat of Section Three opponent Fleetwood on Friday, September 23 in New Holland.

The junior quarterback connected with Blake Weaver on a 62-yard scoring pass in the first quarter, giving the Spartans a 13-0 lead. Garden Spot, with the help of a Harting TD pass to Zac Nagle and Harting himself breaking out into the open for a 79-yard dash to the endzone, increased that lead to 37-0 by halftime.

“He is deceptively fast,” head coach Matt Zamperini said of Harting. “He’s a big threat - throwing and running. He

leads our offense well.”

And when Harting and the offense weren’t finding their way into the endzone, place kicker Nick Gleason was coming through with accurate and strong kicks through the uprights. He nailed field goals from 25 yards, 32 yards and 40 yards away - all in the first half.

“He played a huge role for us, kicking three field goals and all our PAT’s,” Zamperini remarked.

While Harting completed six passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns - a 14-yard scoring pass to sophomore Jace Conrad to close out the scoring in the first half, he also accounted for 179 of his team’s 317 rushing yards.

“Our offensive line opened up a lot of holes for us,” Harting said.

Harting described the touchdown pass to Weaver in the first period.

“It was a fake sweep,” he said. “I saw Blake Weaver running down the field wide open and just threw the ball right to him. He went all the way in.”

The Spartans also scored on a Harting 33-yard dash to the endzone, giving them the eventual margin of victory in the third stanza.

Fleetwood quarterback Jack Riffle threw 29 passes, completing 16 for 119 yards. The Spartans defense could often be found in pursuit of Riffle or getting enough penetration to limit the Tigers (2-3, 0-2) to five rushing yards all night.

“We didn’t give up any big plays,” said Zamperini of the defense. “We got to our spots quickly and that was the biggest thing. We got a lot of pressure on the quarterback.”

BOYS’ SOCCER

Coming off a 2-1 loss to Lancaster Catholic on Monday, September 26, the Spartans turned it around and edged Section Two rival Cedar Crest by the same score Tuesday, improving to 6-5-1 (3-3-0 league).

Rowan Sensenig’s goal came early in Monday’s match in New Holland. The Crusaders evened the score five minutes before halftime and went ahead for good on Will Scott’s goal in the 57th minute.

Josh Martin, who had four saves against Catholic, snagged five shots away from Crest attackers.

Sensenig’s goal in the 60th minute tied the game at 1-1. Braedyn Brill, who provided the assist, scored the eventual game-winner 10 minutes later.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Solanco’s Meg Bailey posted a hat trick to lead her team to an 8-1 victory over Garden Spot on Tuesday at New Holland. Ashton Gonzalez scored the lone goal for the Spartans, who fell to 0-10-0.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Playing three close sets against Elizabethtown, the girls’ volleyball team came up short in a 3-1 loss on Thursday, September 22 at home.

The Bears and Spartans exchanged two close finishes with the visitors winning 25-20 only to have Spot even the match with a 2523 win. The Bears (8-1, 7-1 league) led by Elizabeth Kerin’s 16 kills, won the next two sets 25-18, 25-15.

Chloe Grady collected 11 kills for Spot and Avery Smith registered five blocks. Summer Stern added 14 digs and Kayla Kauffman put up 29 assists.

GOLF

In the L-L League Championships at Fairview Golf Course on Monday, September 26, Lila Albertson finished sixth in the girls’ Class 3A Championships with a score of 97. In doing so, Albertson qualified for the District Three 3A Championships, scheduled for October 7-8 at Briarwood East Golf Club.

In the boys’ championships, Evan Humphreys shot a 93 and Ryan Chapin a 100, both missing the cut for districts.

CROSS COUNTRY

Racing against Ephrata and Manheim Central at Ephrata Middle School on Tuesday, September 27, the girls’ cross country team fell just short of its Section Two rivals. Ephrata won 18-42 and Central topped Spot 21-37.

Top finisher for the Spartans (14) was Julia Hoover, who earned third place with a time of 21:58.

Haley Zimmerman (12th) and Haylee Horning (15th) also made the top 15.

The boys (2-3) ran past Ephrata 20-27 and also Central 24-32 with Alan Krock (18:05), Gavin Reimers (18:12) and Josiah Smucker (18:33) taking second, third and fourth, respectively. Justin McFalls legged out a time of 20:05 to earn 12th.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

The Spartans came up empty against Manheim Central and Donegal in Section Three girls’ tennis matches. In Manheim on Friday, September 23, Lauren Huber edged Spot’s Leah Moua 6-3, 6-1 at number three singles while Brooke Kettler won by the same scores at number four singles against Spot’s Lauren Pavelik en route to a 7-0 Barons victory.

In Monday’s match at Donegal, the Indians prevailed 7-0 as the Spartans fell to 3-9 overall.

Meredith Horst, at number one singles, and Corrine Watson, playing number three, both came close to overtaking their respective opponents.

Horst and Moua made a great effort at number one doubles before falling 8-3.

Addressing Headlight Glare

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.

Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. While LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.

In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to changes in light-

ing. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.

- Clean the windshield. Dirt and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.

- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals.

Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to check for conditions that can

From The Editor’s Desk

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.

It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search

online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.

Hinkletown Church Sets Conference

Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 Division Highway, Ephrata, will host a conference featuring Mike Wingfield from Roanoke, Va., from Saturday, Oct. 8, to Tuesday, Oct. 11. The event has the theme “Living in the End-Times” and will focus on ancient biblical prophecies. Pictures of Wingfield’s trips to the Middle East will be shown 15 minutes before the evening services only.

Wingfield will present a seminar on the book of Revelation on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. Three sessions will be available: “Understanding the Book of Revelation,”

“The Chronological Sequence of Events in the Book” and “A Walk Through the Book of Revelation.”

On Sunday, Oct. 9, the topics will be “The Jewish Roots of Our Faith” at 9 a.m., “The Purposes for the Birth Pangs of the Tribulation” at 10 a.m. and “The Kingdom: The Need for a New Beginning” at 7 p.m. The conference will conclude with “The Kingdom: The Final Preparations” on Monday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. and “The Kingdom: The Blessings of the Kingdom Age” on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. For more information, call 717-354-5213.

make night vision worse.

- Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not focusing on the beams.

- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare.

VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses to wear in highglare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.

- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind

are dimmer.

- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.

These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

Families frompg 2

Throughout the course, the members of each participating family work on learning how to communicate and listen using “I feel” statements, how to say no to peer pressure, and how to just have fun together. “It’s about making decisions to help them reach goals,” said Neff, who added that part of the focus is on what students want to be when they grow up and then working backward to determine the steps that need to be taken to reach that goal. Each program begins with

a meal. Then children and parents are separated for an hour of programming before joining together again for the conclusion. “It talks through how to host family meetings,” said Neff. “I think the power in it is that it’s very practical.” Neff added that there is material for both parents and students to take home and practice and then to discuss at the next session.

Burnett noted that flyers are sent home to families in the district that have children in the designated age

group. The program is also advertised by email, newsletter, and referral.

ELANCO School District families are welcome to attend as well. “We have had a diverse group of families participate and enjoy it,” said Burnett. The most recent cohort began meeting on Oct. 4, and the program will be repeated during the spring semester.

Readers who would like to learn more about the program may visit www.lancasterjoiningforces.org /prevention.

Members of a previous cohort of the Strengthening Families program celebrated their accomplishments when they completed the course.

A school-themed “I Spy” Window Game will be available through October. Patrons may visit the library to spy the fun things on the window and then come inside for a congratulatory sticker. The list of items will change weekly.

A Story Challenge will take place all month. Visitors may read the story on the window next to the wheelchair ramp, then tell the circulation desk staff the answer to the question for a prize.
