New Holland Town Hall To Focus On Poverty By Ann Mead Ash
For Rick Hodge, the idea for a gathering began with conversations with friends that sometimes turned into arguments. “I was trying to figure out how to build bridges around issues that affect all of us, and poverty is one of them,” said Hodge. For Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor of New Holland Mennonite Church, hearing ELANCO School District superintendent Dr. Robert Hollister quote a statistic that noted the percentage of poverty in the area had risen from 21 to 44 percent in the last eight years was a call to action. “When I heard that figure, I thought, ‘We need to look at this,’” recalled Ranck-Hower. “We need to come together … to say, ‘How do we address this?’” Zak Gregg remembered discussing
the issue with Ranck-Hower and Hodge in June and deciding to hold a town hall to explore the issue. “We decided to see what we can do,” said Gregg. What the three decided to do was to hold a New Holland Poverty Town Hall meeting at Garden Spot Fire Hall, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The event will be held in partnership with Lancaster Stands Up. Ranck-Hower enlisted speakers who could talk knowledgeably about the effects of poverty in the New Holland area. “Dr. Hollister … is very concerned about the situation,” said Ranck-Hower, explaining that Hollister will give an overview, followed by Sue Sneath, principal of New Holland Elementary School, who will discuss specific situations. Charis Pankratz, mentoring and education director with CrossNet Ministries, will also give a broad view of the See Town Hall pg 2

Aubrey Kreider, director of marketing and communications at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS), wants area residents to know that they need not have an affiliation with the school to
attend the homecoming barbecue. “People who aren’t connected to the school should feel welcome to come to the barbecue,” said Kreider. New additions to the Friday night activities designed especially for children will include a hayride and face painting. See Homecoming Celebration pg 11
