ecovering from addiction is difficult, but not impossible. It requires self-reflection, human interaction and discipline. It also takes the kind of love and support provided by EL ANCO Celebrate Recovery. “It’s important to celebrate recovery because it’s darn hard,”

said Carol Musser, who’s been a ministry leader for ELANCO Celebrate Recovery for nine years. “We celebrate every day we live in freedom. (Addiction) can take a terrible toll on our personal lives. Isn’t that cause for celebration?” A collaborative cooperation between Petra Church in New Holland, Weaverland Church in East Earl and Bethany Grace Church in East Earl,

ELANCO Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered mission dedicated to serving those struggling with addictions and other life challenges. The group meets every Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Forty-nine years. That’s almost half a century. That’s a lot of bread on the table, that’s a lot of bacon brought home, that’s a lot of garbanzo beans. That’s a lot of hungry people served. A former pastor, George Weaver has been co-coordinating the New Holland Area Crop Hunger Walk, along with Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church pastor Kris Poontajak, for more than 20 years. One of the things that make Gifts That Give Hope so special is that it thrives in the no-judgment zone. The local nonprofit is currently gearing up for this year’s foray into the world of alternative gift giving. “ We tr y to promote more charitable giving,” said Jenn Knepper, the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “I started to think about giving more meaningful gifts to my parents, things like promoting women’s education around the world. I felt like that was something my parents encouraged for me. I think it’s a chance to be creative, like what are the causes that are important to people?” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s upcoming gift festival de-emphasizes material items and emphasizes experiences, altruism and charitable causes. This year’s 19th edition of the unique gift fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event is free to attend, and all proceeds will benefit the participating nonprofits. “I’m always trying to make things run more smoothly,” said Knepper. “We change things based on feedback. Each year we’re just always trying to improve on how we reach people and engage with them. We’re connected with different nonprofits, and we try to promote the things that the nonprofits are doing. There will also be six food trucks, live music and book readings. “It’s an opportunity to catch up with a friend. It’s great for all ages,” said Knepper, a nurse who resides in East Hempfield Township. “ You have to make choices easy for people. I think most people want to be conscientious gift givers or shoppers in general. The gift fair is a one-stop shop for gifts that make a difference. It gave me an opportunity to honor our volunteers. It was a pep rally for them and a way to drive attention to the program.” R ather than counselors or therapists, the 12 ELANCO Celebrate Recovery volunteers who operate the program are more like facilitators, listeners and supporters. They represent all three of the participating churches in serving the 30 to 40 individuals who attend the Tuesday night sessions. other rehabilitation programs, and some are there because of broken relationships, trauma or poor life choices. “Some have mental issues; some are going throug h divorce,” said Musser. “It’s not just for those who have addictions. People who are serious about recovery will try to find as many meetings as they can. We like to say that we’re all broken. They’re all looking for something. It’s for people who realize they need help and support, and that’s what we’re there for. There are lessons about life and how to live it.” EL ANCO Celebrate Recovery was formed in 2017 when Bethany Grace, Weaverl and and Pe tra pooled their resources and talents over a shared concern. “It’s a huge commitment,” said Musser. “Most of our volunteers are there every week. We’re fortunate that with the support of the three churches we don’t worry about finances. It would be hard for one church to do. We learned on the fly. It takes a lot of organization. “There are opportunities to connect with other people. It’s a time for people to say, ‘I’m taking a next step in this meaningful experience.’ They also feel what others have gone through.” Thurston and her husband, Steve, established Hope Inspire Love in 2017, and two years later, the Freedom Walk made its debut with 200 participants. The Freedom Walk has evolved into Hope Inspire Love’s signature event, as both a fundraiser and as a vehicle for bringing awareness to human trafficking. “I look forward to it every year,” said Thurston. “Each of us has a part in this fight, you and I. young people walk with signs that say ‘I’m not for sale’ is so powerful. We have to start when our kids are young. “It’s an outward action of an inner desire for this to end,” she added. “As we move, we see people fill with tears. Some people will pray in the park while we are walking.” More than 500 individuals, mostly from Lancaster County but also from places like Harrisburg, Reading and Philadelphia, will participate in the Freedom Walk. They are supporters from infants to over 90 years of age, social workers, community members, university students, churchgoers and local leaders. The Freedom Walk requires more than 75 volunteers in order to run smoothly. “People are filled with excitement,” said Thurston.

I keep running into people who don’t know about North Star and what we do.” A c c o rd i n g t o C l a r k , the number one tool in attracting potential victims to human trafficking is social media, and force is only used in about three percent of the total human trafficking cases. She also said that more than half of the victims of human trafficking were exploited by family members or trusted caregivers. “We need to strengthen young people by connecting them with safe adults,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield. “Victims are attracted by potential romance opportunities or some other false promise. When we understand the truth of the strategies, then we can build protective measures into young people’s lives. Traffickers are looking for vulnerabilities to get access to potential victims.” NSI was founded in 2010 and seven years later constructed one of the only survivor shelters dedicated to long-term restoration in the region. NSI, which is currently serving six survivors of human trafficking, employs 22 staff members. “We are committed to ending trafficking in our community,” said Clark. “That happens when people decide to come alongside

Few e n d e av o r s re f l e c t t h e mission of North Star Initiative (NSI) as well as the Red Sand Project. “Red sand is used because it immediately attracts your attention,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of NSI for four years. “ W hen you pour it on the sidewalk, it represents people who have fallen through the cracks. Filling the cracks symbolizes that we’re not willing to have people fall in the cracks. We will become a community w h e re t ra f f i c k i n g c a n end.” Recently, Clark, Ariana Sequino and Michelle Curiel, all members of the NSI team - a nonprofit dedicated to fighting human trafficking and exploitation - took advantage of an opportunity to participate in the national Red Sand Project. O n the s ide wa lk s o f the heritage block near Penn Square in the city of Lancaster, participants poured red sand into the cracks between bricks. About 20 human trafficking opponents from the Lancaster County district attorney’s task force, the Lancaster Y WC A and Zoe International joined NSI in a show of solidarity against the societal dilemma. “It’s a stirring project w h e n i t ’s b e i n g d o n e because it’s very visual,” said Clark. “It was both somber and joyful. People were starting to ask, ‘What is this?’ We told them, ‘Human trafficking is here, and we’re standing against it. That’s why we’re here.’ “I don’t think many people know about the Red Sand Project,” continued Clark. “The purpose is to drive awareness to the issue and the services that are available. We’re making a statement, and we want to make others aware. Trafficking is happening. We want people to know about North Star, because people

“There’s always groups who are fading out, and we recruit other ones,” said Weaver. “It’s harder to keep it going than it was 50 years ago. In the last few years, we’ve been raising $8,000 to $10,000. Twenty-five years ago, we raised $15,000 or $20,000. It’s been harder to keep the proceeds coming in.” Community members can help by participating in the next New Holland Area Crop Hunger Walk. This year’s edition of the altruistic community tradition will be staged from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at New Holland Community Memorial Park , 401 E . Jackson St., New Holland. The 3-mile walk will be staged from the Rotar y Pavilion at the park. From there, walkers will trek to Garden Spot Village, make a loop and then return to the park. “We do it because people are hungry,” said Weaver. “We’ve been doing it for 49 years locally.
