New Holland Farmers Day Association Plans Annual Celebration

Paulene Redding, president of the New Holland Farmers Day Association, is game to tackle the tough stuff, and she believes the tough stuff can get done when the community pulls together. Case in

point, the second floor of the New Holland Farmers Day Association, 101 W. Franklin St., New Holland, needed to be cleaned following construction to make it pristine for the needlework displays at this year’s fair. “I invited (committee) chairs and board members to

clean up after the construction,” shared Redding. “I said, ‘Let’s get together for pizza and snacks and turn on some music. Everyone bring a bucket and rags.’” Redding brings that same spirit to the organization of the New Holland Farmers Fair activities.

This year’s 93rd annual event will kick off with the annual fair parade at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Rides, carnival games, contests, food, entertainment, and more will be part of the celebration, which will last through the evening of Saturday, Oct. 4.

According to Carl Edwards, CrossNet Ministries executive director, the journey of the last several years that has focused on remodeling the warehouse the organization purchased on Franklin Street has been focused on raising community awareness and support, and the ELANCO community responded. “I just want to thank the community,

businesses, churches, individuals, and foundations for making this space possible,” said Edwards, referring to the property located at 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. CrossNet offices, including the Food and Nutrition Center and donation center, moved into the new space in mid-September and were open for business on Sept. 15.

Now, the ministry is planning two open houses to introduce area

Organizers of Discover Denver, an event first held in 2018, are excited to be celebrating the day during Denver’s 125th anniversary. To emphasize the history of the second-largest “Denver” in the country, local entertainer Kel Lee will roam the streets offering information about Denver’s roots. “He will walk through (the town’s) history,” said Sandy Flory,

residents to the new space. Open houses will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 24, from 8 to 10 a.m. Tours of the new facility and a variety of activities, including door prizes and light refreshments, are planned for both events.

The property was purchased by CrossNet in late 2022 in response to a need for space as programs and services offered by the ministry outgrew its facilities. Edwards pointed out that the finished ministry building is completed because local individuals cared. “This project is a reflection of the ELANCO community and how much they love their neighbors and love meeting needs in the name of Jesus,” he said.

Meghan Irvine, director of marketing and communications for CrossNet, said that the new facility will be decorated with balloons, and CrossNet merchandise and gift cards will be given away. “We have a lot of great merch left over from different events,” she stated, adding that charging pads, mugs, journals, sweatshirts, T-shirts, and gift cards

This year’s Discover Denver, which is designed to promote and encourage visits to local businesses and nonprofit organizations, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a variety of activities taking place around town. The 300 block of Main Street will be closed from the train tracks near Unruh Insurance to the traffic light at Fourth Street, beginning at 9 a.m. Flory reported that more than 50 area businesses and nonprofits will participate in this year’s event.

Food items for sale at Discover Denver will be offered by Pappy’s BBQ. Milkshakes and empanadas will also be sold. Courtyard Café will be open throughout the event, and Castaneda’s will give away slushies.

The scarecrow competition has become a staple of the fall event. “We have done the scarecrow competition for a couple of years,” noted Flory, who explained that the contest is open to businesses, individuals, and nonprofits. The scarecrows are located throughout town, and attendees may pick up ballots to vote. Scarecrow competition voting will begin at 10 a.m. Pumpkin painting and judging will also be held.

Rooftop musical entertainment will be provided by DJ Willz. “He will be right up there on top of the Unruh building at 10 a.m.,” said Flory, gesturing to the top of the nearby business.

A bounce house, sponsored by Reinholds VFW, will be located at 339 Main St.

Lighthouse Community Center, located at 239 Main St., will be the site of the fifth annual chili cook-off and tasting. The competition will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The pet parade, which will feature leashed pets, will line up at Main and Fourth Streets and begin at noon. At 1:30 p.m., winners for the chili and scarecrow competitions and the pet parade will be announced.

will be among the giveaways. “We will probably give away door prizes that include a collection of CrossNet merch.”

Edwards noted that CrossNet personnel and board members will provide tours of the building. The ministry also moved its yearly match event, which usually occurs in November, to coincide with the move. “We were intentional in scheduling the open house dates in conjunction with our October Match fundraiser,” he explained. “We do a dollar-for-dollar matching fundraiser with a $150,000 match,” said Edwards, adding that 20 “amazing” couples provide the $150,000 to match. “Those couples have been partnering generously with CrossNet for many years,” he said, noting that there will be opportunities to donate during the open houses.

CrossNet Ministries was founded in 1988 by members of Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community. Originally called Cross Connection Youth Center, the ministry purchased its first build-

ing at 127 W. Franklin St. in 2006. The building next door at 123 W. Franklin became CrossNet offices in 2011, and space for the youth center was leased at 110 W. Franklin St. in 2017. By January of 2023, the entire building at 110 W. Franklin had been purchased to make room for the expanding ministry. “A year of the building process

was getting bids and just making a detailed plan,” said Edwards, who added that construction took a year to complete. “We started (remodeling) in September 2024,” said Edwards, who added that the buildings that are being vacated will be retained in hopes of repurposing them to provide crisis housing in the future.

Edwards hopes local residents will visit during the open houses to

appreciate the accomplishment in which they took part. “I hope when our community sees this, there’s a feeling of pride in them because they were part of something bigger than themselves,” he stated.

Historical Society Exhibit To Highlight Local Forges

A display highlighting three local forges - Windsor Forge, Poole Forge and Spring Grove Forge - is currently being featured at the Caernarvon Historical Society building, 2148 Main St., Narvon. The public is invited to view the display, which will be open on Sunday, Sept. 28, from noon to 4 p.m.

Society president Yvonne Styer explained that forges were used to heat pig iron from local furnaces to make it more malleable. “The forges purchased pig iron from the furnaces, and they pounded it (out). They processed it,” she explained. “The flat iron was given to the blacksmith or taken to Philadelphia to sell. The blacksmiths used (the metal) to make horseshoes, nails and pots and pans.”

Walk-In

“The pig iron was delivered to the forges by a horse-drawn wagon that was specially built for handling iron,” added society

member William Shirk.

Several pieces of the flattened pig iron are part of the display. “We also have a map of where all the furnaces and forges are located that are in this area,” said Styer, noting the map includes Joanna

“We have tons of pictures. We have no photos of the actual Windsor Forge, but we have a picture of a stone that came out of it,” she noted. “Windsor Forge was owned by William Branson first. His daughter and her husband ran the forge for a period of time. Then, the Jenkins family acquired the forge. David Jenkins, the son of Robert Jenkins, was the first one who operated the forge. He worked for Branson, and he kept buying shares for the forge and ended up buying it.”

New Holland Fair

One event that is held prior to the parade is the New Holland Fair queen competition, which is open to young women ages 16 to 20 who live in ELANCO, Pequea Valley, or Conestoga Valley school districts. This year’s competition will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28. The fair queen competition will be sponsored by New Holland Auto Group again this year. Redding, who organizes the parade, said that all the sponsor spots are full this year. Premium spots raise about $12,000, which will be used to aid in paying off the new elevator in the Farmers Association building. “Our honor band is Central York Middle School Fife and Drum,” stated Redding, who added that six high school bands will take part in the parade and that the Lincoln University Orange Crush band is returning. “I remember the first time we saw them,” recalled Redding. “They did a Michael Jackson move, and it was pretty cool.” Redding expects up to 17 bands will march in the parade, including the Fralinger String Band.

Parade attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to a drive organized by CrossNet youths and Garden Spot Village residents during the parade. Collected food items will be donated to the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center.

Nightly entertainment was introduced during the 2022 fair. This year, performances will be held on Towne Centre Green from 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, and Friday, Oct. 3, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 4. “Entertainment is all free, and it’s a mix of musical acts - rock, country, oldies,” announced Redding.

The petting zoo will return to Franklin Street across from the farm show building and near the merry-go-round. Junior Fair Board members have painted signs to help guide fair attendees to the animal exhibits, including sheep, goats, and swine, which will be located on Fulton Street. This year, rabbits will be exhibited once again. “We have 30 signs they painted with jokes and pictures of animals and fun facts to lead people down to the animals,” noted Redding.

The Junior Fair Board has also lobbied for a talent show, which will be held on Towne Center Greene on the morning of Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. “Just show up and show us your talent,” said Redding, who added that volunteer T-shirts were designed by Junior Fair Board member Bella Jones and sponsored by Case New Holland.

New Holland Fair

from pg 9

In an effort to involve more young people in fair activities, Redding has enlisted IU13 students to hang parking signs and clean up after the parade, as they have for the past two years. “We also met with (ELANCO School District superintendent Dr. Michael) Snopkowski,” said Redding, who noted the administrator has “gone out of his way to” contact students and teachers to participate. “For the first time in several years, the Class of 2027 members will carry the band sponsor signs in the parade,” shared Redding.

Those who wish to purchase ride tickets early may obtain them from Boy Scout Troop 48, Yoder’s Country Market, Stauffer’s Drug Store, New Holland Church of the Nazarene, and the farm show building beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Children who wish to enter the coloring contest may pick up pages at the ELANCO Library or find them online at www.newhollandfair.org.

Forges

from pg 7

“She had a lion’s head at each corner of the bottom of the bed. Scott Martin allowed us to display it,” Styer said, noting that in addition to painting and writing poetry, Blanche was one of the few women sculptors of her time. She is known for her sculpted “Lion in the Park” at Reservoir Park and the horse drinking fountain, both located in Lancaster.

The exhibit also features paintings of the forges and the ironmaster’s mansions, some by Morgantown artist Jere Brady; old ledgers; and photographs. Styer noted that the Spring Grove Forge Mansion is now privately owned.

The display features photos of Poole Forge, including a 3D map of the site, which includes the ironmaster’s mansion, the paymaster’s house, two tenant houses and the covered bridge.

“We have photos of Poole Forge when it was first purchased by the township, including the playground when it was first built,” Styer noted.

Visitors may spend as much time as they want going through all the exhibits during the upcoming open house. “If you go through and read all the documents, you will be here for quite a while,” Styer said with a smile.

Visitors may also notice the society’s new flag that features a Welsh dragon that was created in honor of its 50th anniversary.
