Back in 2012, Edith Bacon had a dream. “Edith decided she wanted to see all the Mason-Dixon markers in Cecil County, (Md.),” said Emily Kilby, Edith’s sister. The two senior citizens decided to try to visit the 23 markers, each located a mile apart from each other, which were placed by surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in 1765. The sisters live in Cecil County, Md., about a mile south of the line. Kilby’s job was to do the logistics work. “(Many) markers are on private land and in weird locations,” said Kilby. “There’s no easy access, and neither (Pennsylvania nor Maryland) owns them.”
Bacon and Kilby will share what they learned on their quest in a multimedia presentation called “Edith and Emily’s Excellent Adventure” as guests of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland,

Matt Dorgan took heartbreak and turned it into hope and healing. On Dec. 3, 2020, his 15-yearold daughter, Brianna, died by suicide after a long struggle with mental health.
“Her passing shook us to our core,” he said, noting that close friends rallied around him but he knew he could not just simply move on. “As we shared our grief, we realized a painful truth: Every one of us had lost someone we loved
to mental illness. And now, we had lost Brianna. We knew something had to change. We had to do something.”
In those first raw moments of heartbreak, the idea for a mental health festival was born, he recalled.
“We wanted to raise money, yes, but more than that, we wanted to raise awareness and build a real support network for those in crisis,” Dorgan shared. “Then came the words that changed everything: ‘We need to build the bridge.’ And just as quickly, someone shouted

The mission statement of Handi-Vangelism (HVMI) specifies that the organization “exists to share the compassion of Christ by walking alongside individuals facing life’s challenges and equipping others to do the same.” With that goal in mind, the ministry focuses on three areas: disability, grief, and training. The disability ministry includes the summer day camps and a variety of Bible

back, ‘For Brianna!’”
Just weeks after Brianna’s death, on Dec. 27, 2020, Building Bridges for Brianna began.
“Since that day, we’ve been committed to knocking down barriers to mental health care,” Dorgan explained. “When we see a wall in services, we don’t walk away. We find a way over it, around it, under it or straight through it.”
Describing his daughter, Dorgan noted that he could talk forever.
“Brianna was an incredible soul - kind, compassionate and full of love for people and animals alike,” he remarked.
Born in Key West, Fla., Brianna soon demonstrated a desire to help others, Dorgan said, sharing stories of Brianna’s giving spirit.
A passionate animal lover, Brianna constantly lobbied to turn her home into a zoo, her father joked, noting that she wanted a monkey or a pig as a pet but happily settled for a pet dog, Emma, who she brought home just one week before her death.
An eighth-grader at Dallastown Area School District when she died, Brianna had a close-knit group of friends.
While cleaning her room after she passed, Dorgan found a simple white T-shirt with a powerful message: “Keep Fight;ing! I Believe in You You are a Star.” The semicolon and phrasing were exactly how Brianna wrote it, he said.
“That message - raw, honest and filled with hope - has become the motto of Building Bridges for Brianna,” Dorgan commented. “It speaks not just to who Brianna was, but to the mission she unknowingly helped create: to remind people that they are not alone and they are worthy of love, support and healing.”
Building Bridges for Brianna, which serves all of Pennsylvania, held its first mental health festival in June of 2021. More than 1,500 people attended. Dorgan remembers open conversations about mental health and organizations completing real-time intakes and scheduling therapy sessions on the spot.
“That night, I spent nearly two hours answering emails, messages and phone calls from people thanking us for creating a space like that,” he said. “That was the moment we knew this couldn’t be just one event. It had to become a movement.”
The organization soon became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and began paying for co-pays; providing coping tools; offering Question, Persuade, Refer prevention training; and speaking publicly about mental health. Still, Dorgan always believed he could do more.
In its third year, the organization received a donation that helped to open the first office, hire licensed social workers and therapists and offer free or reduced-cost mental health care. Within six months, the organization had outgrown the space.
Moving into a much larger office, the organization continued to grow.
“Since opening the new center, we’ve helped more than 400 people in our community get the mental health support they need,” Dorgan said of the headquarters located in Dallastown.
Dorgan, who works full time as a probation officer for the County of York in addition to running the nonprofit, emphasized the organization works hard to provide care quickly, eliminating the red tape that can cause months-long delays via traditional routes to help.
Community support is needed
clubs and support groups. The grief ministry, called BASIS, provides Christian support groups for grieving parents throughout the county and beyond, and the training program offers workshops to help family members, friends, and community leaders learn about what life is like with a disability or how to navigate the journey of grief.
“We are growing each year,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministries and training and equipping with HVMI. “We are dividing and adding programs as we see the needs of children shift and as the older ones (mature).” Kelley emphasized that the ministry will continue to provide free services for individuals who need them regardless of age. “It never ends,” she said. “Individuals shift from group to group.”
Kelley backed up her words by pointing out that the ministry will
start a new preschool group for children with disabilities at the HVMI offices, 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, beginning on Monday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. “It will be the fourth Monday of each month from October to April,” explained Kelley, who added this is the first time the ministry has held a group for preschoolers. “We will have a new daytime parent support meeting during that preschool group for parents who want to stay for coffee and to chat,” added Kelley.
HVMI Bible club programs for children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities of all levels are held at HVMI. A few groups meet at local churches, including Akron Community Church and New Joy Church in Ephrata. “Because the groups are divided based on ability level and learning style, and behavior, it’s best to contact us (if you’re inter -
ested),” explained Kelley. “They are open to the public, and we welcome more people,” she added, noting that discerning the best group for an individual needs to be accomplished by working with a trained staff member.
HVMI offers workshops in disability and grief for people who want to know how to help friends or family members. “These training

While the Mason-Dixon Line is often associated with the Civil War, the sisters were emphatic that the line’s purpose has much more to do with land rights and boundaries than with a demarcation between the north and the south. Kilby explained that Maryland was founded by the Calvert family. “Lord Baltimore was his title, and that land was granted in 1632,” Kilby explained. “(William) Penn (founder of Pennsylvania) comes along almost 50 years later (1681), and he is granted his big parcel.” Kilby noted that the original Maryland grant went as far as the Delaware Bay and would have included Philadelphia. Penn, on the other hand, thought his property extended far into Maryland. “(Penn) granted the Nottingham lots, which are now part of Maryland,” Kilby explained. Without a clear border between the colonies, Pennsylvania residents were claiming
property in Maryland, and taxing of land was confusing. “This went on for almost a century,” explained Kilby, who noted that Mason and Dixon who were hired by both families to decipher the puzzle, with work being done only during the warmer months.
The entire line took nearly five years to complete.
Unlike Mason and Dixon, Bacon and Kilby worked during the cooler months when brush and vines were less likely to obscure the markers.
“It was a matter of curiosity and adventure,” said Bacon. “It combined hiking, exploring, and being outside.”
Once Bacon had found a few related markers, she wanted to find them all.
The markers the women were seeking are made of limestone, and each is 4 to 5 feet long. Quarried and carved in England, each is marked with and M on one side for Maryland and a P on the other for Pennsylvania. Every fifth mile, a crown stone with the family seal carved into it was placed.
According to Kilby, the sisters are
the only living persons known to have seen all 23 markers. One was located in a quarry, and the sisters were able to see it before it was removed to a safer location for preservation. Another was within a barn, and a groundskeeper allowed them access. “One we had to dig up in the middle of an Amish cornfield,” said Kilby, who noted that marker was on land that had once belonged to a cousin of the sisters. “The coordinates were very accurate,” she noted, adding that she could tell when they hit the concrete base of the marker and found that only the stub was left. Five of the markers are located within Lancaster County.
“The last one was a Boy Scout reservation, and I had to wait a bit to get permission,” noted Bacon. “Each one added its own adventure.” Bacon stated that the most difficult marker to access required them to climb boulders.
Mason and Dixon used celestial navigation and trigonometry to complete the line. “I have no notion of how
you do celestial navigation,” Kilby said. “(Mason and Dixon) had to find the parallel by looking for the stars.” Kilby stated that the surveyors carried very delicate instruments and took about 40 people in their entourage. The start of the work was delayed by inclement weather. “They were camped in what is now Delaware, and they had planned to start in late March,” noted Kilby, who added that a three-day snowstorm left 3 feet of snow in the forest and delayed the surveyors until April 5, 1765. “They had this entourage of people, pack animals, and cooks, and they provisioned themselves as they went along,” shared Kilby.
The Mason-Dixon Line talk will be the first of several NHAHS presentations to be held at GSV in 2025 and into 2026. More information about NHAHS may be found at https:// nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.
sessions are for people in the community and churches who wish to understand more about disabilities and grief,” explained Kelley, who added, “I have had grandparents who said, ‘I had no idea (this is how my grandchild felt)’ or ‘I finally understand why my grandchild acts this way,’” said Kelley, who noted workshops include topics such as autism and ADHD. “Adults with ADHD have said, ‘I now understand why I am the way I am or why my spouse is the way he is,’” shared Kelley. “It helps equip families to deal with the situation.”
Grief seminars are presented by HVMI founders Tim and Kathy Sheetz. “We have updated and adapted the information, and we are ready to go,” said Kelley who
noted that sessions are held for the public, or a church or community organization can schedule one at their location. “We are here to help if they need it,” stated Kelley. Readers who are interested in Bible clubs or workshops may call 717859-4777 and ask for Kelley. BASIS has support groups meeting in a number of locations within Lancaster County including Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, and Quarryville. An online group meets monthly as well. The ministry holds an annual breakfast and picnic. A new group, which is open to any bereaved parent or grandparent who has experienced the death of a child, is starting up this fall in New Holland. “(BASIS director Dan Steinman) has had more inquiries in the New Holland area,” shared Kelley, who noted that although
the group will meet in the Prayer and Meditation Room at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, it will be open to the public. The group, which will meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., will next gather on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Readers who are interested in the group may visit www.hvmi .org/grief-basis or call HVMI and ask for Steinman.
Several years ago, HVMI purchased a former golf course and built the current offices on part of the land. The organization began to hold day camp there in 2021. Two threeday sessions are now held each week during the months of June and July. “That’s nine sessions over six weeks,” explained Kyle Robinson, executive director of HVMI, who added that 123 campers took part this year. A year from now, construction on buildings
for overnight camp is scheduled to begin. Proposed facilities include a multipurpose building, which will house a chapel, Bible classrooms, training rooms, and a large meeting room, along with a dining hall and kitchen. A second building behind the main one will provide dorm-style living with smaller rooms for campers with medical needs and staff members, meeting rooms, and an infirmary to make overnight camp available in the future. Outside, a pool, pavilion, and playground are planned. Already, carefully graded handicapped-accessible walkways traverse the hillside. By the summer of 2028, the organization plans to hold overnight camping at the facility. Fundraising to make the dream a reality is ongoing.

The organization’s signature event, the Bridge Building Festival, is held every September in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. This year’s festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Dallastown Community Park, 50 S. School Place.
“What started in 2021 with 35 vendors and 1,500 attendees has grown into a vibrant, communi -

ty-powered event with over 100 vendors and more than 5,000 attendees,” Dorgan said. “The festival includes music, food trucks, local vendors, mental health organizations and a powerful sense of shared purpose.”
Also every September, the organization leads a Purple Light Campaign to raise awareness of suicide prevention, encouraging people to change their outdoor lights to purple ones to reflect one of the movement’s official colors.
Although the festival is the organization’s biggest event, Dorgan emphasized that the nonprofit
works year-round to promote positive mental health.
“Mental health isn’t a one-time conversation. It’s an everyday commitment. And we’re here, year-round, building the bridge between pain and healing, isolation and community, hopelessness and hope,” Dorgan said. “Brianna’s legacy is the bridge we’re building: one that connects people to the help, hope and healing they deserve.”
