Fifth Quarter To Mark 10th Year

For nearly a decade, Garden Spot High School (GSHS) students participating in Fifth Quarter events at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church walked less than half a mile to the faithbased activities planned to follow home football games. However, in late 2024, Lighthouse moved to its new location at 1279 Main St., East Earl, more than two miles from the high school.

Landon Ritchey, youth and connections pastor with Lighthouse, was determined to find a way for Fifth Quarter to continue into its 10th year.

“Back in the beginning of the year, I saw ‘Brave the Dark,’” stated Ritchey. “Brave the Dark” is the story of GSHS teacher Stan Deen, who takes in a troubled teen and walks with the student as the youth deals with his traumatic past. “While we were watching the movie, I felt a strong burden

for our school,” said Ritchey, a GSHS graduate who attended the Early Birds Bible Club Deen had started at the school. “I realized the impact Stan had as a teacher in our community,” said Ritchey. “I realize now as a youth pastor

“Students are hungry for the presence of the Lord and an encounter with God.”

leading Youth Alive (Bible Club), I can make the same impact as the Gospel witness for our school.”

Driving home from the movie, Ritchey felt the Lord prompting him. “I knew in my spirit,” said Ritchey. “The Lord said, ‘Shake your school with my power.’”

With that mission in mind,

Ritchey set about finding a place close to the school to hold Fifth Quarter events following games on Fridays, Sept. 12 and 26. For 2025, Fifth Quarter events will be held at 171 Tower Road, New Holland, beginning at 9:30 p.m. and ending at midnight. The location is across from the parking lot behind Garden Spot Middle School. “Thank you to Weaver Custom Woodworking for being willing to host Fifth Quarters,” stated Ritchey.

Fifth Quarter events offer fun activities for students, including football; ultimate frisbee; volleyball; and yard games such as spike ball, a game involving four players and a net on the ground similar to a miniature trampoline. Free refreshments, specifically walking tacos and iced coffee, are also offered. Adult volunteers oversee the event and encourage interaction between students.

The events also feature a time of

“In 1880, the (cigar) factories (in Terre Hill) were producing and wrapping 380,000 cigars a week,” said Rodney Hartman of the Terre Hill Area Historical Society (THAHS).

THAHS member Carol Ann Boswell noted that about 20 locations related to cigar making in Terre Hill, once a prominent manufacturer of stogies, will be

included on the Terre Hill Cigar Industry Trolley Tour.

Three guided 30-minute tours will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, with tours leaving the THAHS headquarters at 131 W. Main St., Terre Hill, at 1:15, 2:15, and 3:15 p.m. Tour participants are asked to be at the location 10 minutes prior to the time of the tour they are taking. There is no charge to take the tour, but seating is limited. THAHS will

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccination annually, ideally by October. Vaccination to prevent influenza is particularly important for people who are at higher risk of developing serious complications from flu, including people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies also offer pneumococcal vaccinations, which can be administered at the same time as a flu shot. The CDC recommends the pneumococcal vaccination for all children younger than 5 years old and all adults age 50 years or older. It is also recommended for both children and adults with certain risk conditions.

Immunizations are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists and specially trained pharmacy team members, subject to state regulations. of Freedom Ministries (ROFM) annual Victory banquet. Victory: An Evening of Freedom Stories will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. at the Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

The speaker for this year’s banquet will be Christian singer and songwriter Mark Schultz, known for his songs “Letters from War” and “He’s My Son.” Abbey Ginder, development and marketing director with ROFM, said Schultz’s story fit with the ministry’s current emphasis on how addiction affects families.

“Mark has a story of adoption,” explained Ginder.

“His (adopted) parents stood in the gap for him. The adoption agency stood in the gap.” Schultz also has experience mentoring men with addictions. “(Now), he talks about standing in the gap (for people),” Ginder added, noting that Schultz will bless the gathering by singing a few of his songs.

Elwood Martin, who serves as executive director of ROFM, has been involved with the ministry in a variety of roles since it was founded in 2012. Martin, who will speak about his experiences with the organization at the banquet, called adoption a “hot topic” among men struggling with addictions. “We have a few guys who have been adopted, and it is so close to the heart of these men. They have a black hole, and they have no clue what it is,” he pointed out. “They have something missing, and they can’t put a finger on it.”

Martin has seen firsthand how addictions and the loss associated with those issues can affect families. While working at the Freedom Thrift on 30 store, Martin explained the mission of the ministry to a shopper. “(The shopper said) ‘We lost our son (to an addiction) five years ago at 30 years old,’” recalled Martin. “She wanted to shake my hand, and she just tried to hold on. The family connection … we have to (understand) how important that is.”

Ginder said the ministry recently interviewed Cristy King, wife of Daniel King, a man who completed the ROFM program and now

works as vocational therapy director for the organization. “We told the story from a wife’s point of view … what it was like to have Dan in the program and to have a young child … and to come full circle to when he was working in the program,” said Ginder. “That’s the family theme.”

On the menu for the evening will be Shady’s slow roasted tender beef and baked barbecue chicken with a variety of sides and desserts served buffet style.

A silent auction featuring two high-end kayaks and a set of tires will be held during the event.

Tickets, which are necessary to attend the banquet, may be purchased by visiting www.rofm.org/ banquet/. Readers who prefer may bring a check to the Freedom Thrift located at the ministry, 114 Ranck Church Road, New Holland. Tickets must be purchased by Friday, Sept. 12.

Elwood Martin will be one of the featured speakers at the upcoming Revelations of Freedom Ministries Victory banquet.

welcome donations from those who take the tour. Those wishing to take part in the guided trolley tours are asked to call 610-2733109 by Saturday, Sept. 13, to register. Readers may also register by messaging THAHS at the organization’s Facebook page, which may be found by searching for “Terre Hill Area Historical Society.”

In addition, a booklet for a self-guided car or walking tour may also be picked up at the historical society. The walking tour is approximately three miles. Signs will be located at each stop on the day of the tour.

“Each location had something to do with the cigar making and packaging process,” said Boswell. “You didn’t have to be in a big factory to handroll a cigar.” Boswell added that some locations were warehouses where tobacco was stored

and that three of the stops were cigar-box factories, with one location housing workers and another simply for packing finished cigars into boxes.

THAHS members have been hard at work researching the history of cigar making in Terre Hill, formerly known as Fairville. Boswell and Reggie Hartman have scoured books, articles, pictures, and the internet for information for the tour, which will cover the time period from 1848 to 1927. While most of the places are now private homes, apartments, or storage facilities, Boswell stated that three of the locations burned, including one large factory producing El Producto cigars that had been located on Main Street across from where the THAHS meets today. “It took three other buildings with it (when it burned) in 1927,” Boswell said.

Member Bob Jackson noted that the 1916 edition of the Terre Hill Times said that cigar manufacturing was the main industry in this town with eight fac -

tories running full time.

“Another source indicated at one time there were 12 (factories) in town,” stated Jackson, adding that cigar making facilities ranged from small factories employing 10 to 30 people to large factories employing up to 300. “There were three cigar-box manufacturing facilities as well, and about 30% of the workers were women,” noted Jackson.

Boswell explained that Pennsylvania Broadleaf, which is grown in Lancaster County, has several uses. “It is used not only for the wrappers but for the fillers,” she said, adding that at a period of time when cigarettes were outlawed, cigar smoking became more prevalent. “At one point, Pennsylvania was the largest tobacco grower in the country,” she said. Boswell looks forward to sharing her knowledge as she and Jackson narrate the trolley tours. “Abner Clime started cigar manufacturing in this town, and he founded Terre Hill,” she stated. “He and his family had busi -

nesses all over town.” The manufacturers employed so many people, one location was once a restaurant and boarding house for employees. “This was for people who worked in the factory because there was no transportation in and out of town,” she said. “They stayed during the week.” Rod added that the industry encompassed everything from large factories to women who rolled cigars at night after their children went to sleep to earn extra funds.

According to Boswell, automation contributed to the end of the small-town industry. “By the 1920s, they had automated cigar making equipment, and that was the beginning of the demise,” she said.

THAHS members credited Boswell with the idea for holding the tour, but she noted that when research showed the importance of cigar making in Terre Hill, all the members got on board. “We decided to do it because it was such a big part of the history of this little town,” she said.

preaching and prayer. “It’s a powerful, life-giving message,” said Ritchey, who will preach at both events this year. “Then we offer prayer for every single student.” If a student responds to a call to receive Christ, he or she is given a Bible and materials to help guide the student in his or her new relationship with God.

In 2024, Ritchey preached at one event, and Youth Alive leader and then GSHS senior Abby Moyer took to the podium at the other. “Last year, more than 500 students attended the two events, and 251 responded publicly to receive Jesus,” said Ritchey, who noted among the students who attended were those struggling with anxiety and negative thoughts. “A number were

believing for miracles,” said Ritchey, who noted that many of those students are now connected to the Lighthouse youth group, which meets at the church on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. or the Youth Alive that meets at GSHS under the direction of student Cheyenne Straub.

“God has done a great work,” said Ritchey, who added that when he visits GSHS for Youth Alive, students have stopped him and asked for prayer. “Students are hungry for the presence of the Lord and an encounter with God,” said Ritchey. “Beyond a fun and safe after party, the walking tacos, and playing sports, I believe there are problems students in our school are facing that no amount of education, counseling, or

self help will be able to help,” he stated. “Only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ will solve that.”

Ritchey said he has a heart for GSHS and the lost students who attend there. He is looking forward to holding Fifth Quarters in the new location adjacent to the school. “Student safety is a big priority,” he pointed out. “We have done this event for (nearly) 10 years. Our team has the (necessary) experience.”

More information about Fifth Quarter and Lighthouse youth activities may be found on Instagram at @lighthouseyth and @ gshs5Q and on youtube at “lhyth.” Readers may also visit www.lighthouse ag.com/youth.

Winograd gave his first solo public performance at the age of 11 and was accepted at 17 as a scholarship student of Dorothy DeLay at The Juilliard School. Pan studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Syracuse University in New York and earned his doctorate in musical arts from Rutgers University in New Jersey. He has collaborated with the American String Quartet, Hai-Ye Ni, Priscilla Lee, Dara Morales, and the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble. As a Steinway Artist, he was inducted into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame in 2023.
