Looking Reamstown Will Celebrate Forward Hometown Spirit to Looking Back

Reamstown Days celebrates what it means to be from Reamstown. “This is a family event,” said Carol Smith, coordinator of Reamstown Days. “Everything is reasonably priced, making it possible to enjoy free entertainment and great food. Reamstown is just a special town.” This year’s edition of Reamstown Days falls on Friday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 10 p.m., and on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The community event is being staged at the site of its beneficiary, Reamstown Memorial Park, 23 E. Church St. - a 13-acre community-owned park donated to local residents by a group of four local businessmen nearly 90 years ago. Reamstown Days are free to attend, but there are some modest costs associated with attractions and food. “My favorite part is the energy and excitement of the children,” said Smith. “I enjoy the hometown feeling of just getting the community together and enjoying each other’s company.” Reamstown Days will feature rocking tunes from Trent Becker and the Collective on Friday; the Fabulous Grease Band on Saturday; homemade delights like ice cream, french A visitor displays the face painting artistry of

Funding an all-volunteer, community fire company is no small undertaking, no easy task. It requires creativity, planning, consistency and flexibility. “Garden Spot Fire Rescue is funded by donations from the community,” said Trevor Martin, a GSFR lieutenant for six years. “Contrary to what most people think, we do not receive money from taxes. Fundraisers like this are on a downward trend as volunteerism is also on a downward trend. All of our members have full-time jobs and families. GSFR hosts a handful of fundraisers each year, but we are

Officials and organizers in New Holland are pulling out all the stops. They’re going all in and going all out. They’re ramping up, and it’s full steam ahead. It’ll be a celebration the likes of which this town has never seen before for an event that New Holland has never witnessed before. “The goal is to remember the neat things that have come out of New Holland,” said Allison Cuthie, a member of the planning committee for New Holland 300. “There are generations behind us who I think will benefit from what we’re doing. There have been a lot of good things that have come out of New Holland, things that have been important to the state and the country. “We can get caught up in our everyday lives,” she continued. “I think it’s worth the time to appreciate the environment that people who came before us created.” New Holland 300 is a new civically minded organization whose goal is to celebrate the locale’s upcoming tricentennial, which will be recognized in 2028. Originally called by different names, New Holland was settled in 1728 by German immigrants seeking religious freedom. After meeting sporadically for the last year or so, the New Holland 300 initiative recently was registered as a nonprofit organization. Meetings have become more regular, and a board of directors, a planning committee, a financial committee and an education committee have been established.

Library Plans Fundraiser The Eastern Lancaster County Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, will host a Fill-a-Bag Fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or while supplies last. The event will take place in the activity room on the second floor of the library. Attendees will receive a bag at the door. They

may browse hundreds of unsorted books in a variety of genres, including a large selection of children’s books, and fill their bag with as many items as they want. New Holland 300 has come up with the tagline, “We’re looking forward to looking back.” “We have come up with our charter for what we want to do,” said Cuthie. “It was a very small group that started with a short list of activities. We conducted focus sessions that were open to the public where we asked people to share their thoughts. Now we have a long list of potential activities and events that depend upon the number of volunteers we get.” New Holland 300 is considering a number of local community events throughout 2028 to celebrate the town’s 300th birthday, many of which are still in the planning stages. The organization is also thinking about a series of events over the next 18 months. Among the activities and events being considered are a large kickoff event that could include a land acknowledgement for the area, a

speaker series, a community quilt project, a race series for runners, a family day and a number of fundraising events. As an original projection, officials of New Holland 300 would like to raise about $50,000 for the tricentennial celebration. “We want to spark interest now, and we don’t want to waste time,” said Cuthie. “That’s why we’ve got to keep talking about it. A lot of groups have agreed to adopt the tricentennial theme for their events that year.” A concept that has gained traction within the New Holland 300 initiative is seasonally breaking down the 2028 calendar year into four quarters and featuring aspects of local history, churches, agriculture and community in each quarter. Currently, there are about 20 committed community members involved with New Holland 300. Some of those members are associated with the New Holland Area

Historical Society. “They are local business owners,” said Cuthie, who also serves as the executive director of CrossNet Ministries. “They are longtime area residents. They are people who have had relatives who have lived here. They are longtime employees of local businesses. Fairmount’s 37th annual benefit auction is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 529 E. Farmersville Road, New Holland. I think the audience can connect with the characters.” Nearly 150 individuals are involved with Servant Stage’s production of “Anne of Green Gables,” a roster that includes performers, musicians, set builders, production team members, ushers and concession stand workers. A total of 70 professional and amateur actors and actresses, between the ages of 5 and 70, make up the double-role cast. “We’re trying to portray a town,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “Our cast is more than a typical theater show. We’ve got retirees, workers from different occupations, and half of the cast are students. The local fire company will conduct this year’s edition of its annual Cruise Night car show from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, in the parking lot, grassy areas and surrounding roads of GSFR’s substation at 4305 Division Highway, Blue Ball. The community event is free to attend, and all proceeds from the evening’s festivities will benefit GSFR. “We are here for any and all emergency needs in our community,” said Martin. “We live by our motto - preparation, service and professionalism. Every action we take is in preparation to serve with the highest level of professionalism.” More than 450 vehicles of all types, styles, makes and models are expected to participate in GSFR’s Cruise Night. At stake will be the Chief’s Choice Trophy, which will be awarded to the vehicle that strikes the fancy of the trophy’s namesake the most. “I really enjoy seeing each car as it comes in,” said Martin, a resident of East Earl. “The variety of cars and trucks is awesome. The fireworks at the end of the night is the cherry on top. “Anyone is welcome to enter their vehicle,” he added. “These vehicles are people’s pride and joy. We expect the spectators to show respect when walking around looking at the vehicles.” The vehicles for the show will begin arriving around 4 p.m. GSFR’s Cruise Night activities

will also include a DJ spinning tunes, GSFR’s ladies’ auxiliary’s food stand, food trucks and a fire prevention display. There will also be GSFR apparel and patches available for purchase. “It is a family-friendly event,” said Martin. “There is food for supper, as well as dessert and ice cream trailers. “As a volunteer organization, we rely on donations to cover all of our operating costs,” Martin continued. “We do not have any fire tax in this area, so all of our money is donations. There is not a specific amount that we are hoping for. The money will help fund our general operating budget.” Formerly known as the Blue Ball Fire Company Car Show, the event became the GSFR Cruise Night when the Liberty Fire Company and the Blue Ball Fire Company merged in 2013 to become GSFR. Operated by more than 100 active members, GSFR responds to nearly 550 calls for service each year, including medical assistance, vehicle accidents, all types of fires and even ducks caught in storm drains. “Get involved in your community; volunteer somewhere,” said Martin. “My wife and I feel our family is called to serve in this way. God has us here to be a helping hand to those in their greatest time of need. Housing is more than a roof over heads, shade from the sun or shelter from the weather. Affordable housing plays a very strong social role in our communities. It can provide security, profoundly affect the developmental health of current and future generations and enrich lives. The Conestoga Valley area is just one of many places in Lancaster County facing affordable housing challenges. “The people who will directly benefit from this project are neighbors who are referred to Chestnut Housing by CV SEEDS or Bridge of Hope,” said Michelle Kime, the executive director of Conestoga Valley SEEDS. “They are individuals and families in need of the opportunity for more affordable housing and who are working with a social service organization on goals they have. Once they are living in these homes, they will stay connected to the social service organization working with them for at least a year. We would also suggest that our entire community would benefit from this project, because when more of our neighbors have access to affordable housing and the stability that it brings and the space that it allows for them to thrive in new ways, we all benefit.” Partners CV SEEDS, Chestnut Housing and Bridge of Hope are collaborating on the Bridgeport Housing Project (BHP), a new initiative that will construct 13 affordable apartments on Lincoln Highway. Exhibit to Highlight Retirement Community

The New Holland Area Historical Society will host an exhibit chronicling the history of Garden Spot Village (GSV). The exhibit which is on loan from the Archive Room at GSV - will be on display through Wednesday, Sept. 30. It was curated by Ken Wendal. GSV was started more than 30 years ago when Victor F. Weaver and Ivan Martin conceived of the idea to establish a retirement home for local people. Victor’s son, Dale, along with Aaron Hollinger, Raymond Hurst, and Mar tin Weaver, carried the vision forward and broke ground in 1994.
