WellSpan Health is looking for a bunch of good folks - conscientious people, proactive people, big-picture people. The health care system is encouraging individuals to participate in a transformative study called “The Gene Health Project.” It’s a project that can change the direction of participants’ health, as well as help others. “The opportunity to do prevention is tremendous,” said Dr. David Kann, medical director of genetics and precision medicine for WellSpan Health. “We can prevent certain diseases. Most people who participate really want to advance research, more than help themselves. Obviously, preventing a heart attack is better than treating one.” The Gene Health Project is an immense undertaking that involves multiple health care systems from all over the nation. The study collects samples of individuals’ genetics, stores the data and examines it. From those examinations, the study can predict an individual’s likelihood for certain illnesses and diseases. In six to eight weeks, participants are notified of the results of their studied samples. But the project needs samples to study. Interested individuals over the age of 18 can request blood draws or saliva kits through their Wellspan Health internet portals or by visiting the health care system’s website at www.wellspan.org. There are no costs involved with participating. WellSpan Health operates 12 hospitals and more than 250 patient care facilities in central

The story is written as an allegory pointing readers to Jesus. Smoker used her talents to create original painted watercolor illustrations for the book. An illustrated hardback children’s book titled “All in a Day With Daisy” was recently published by three sisters, Judy Smoker, June Hollinger, and Rhonda Nissley, who grew up in Strasburg as the Siegrist girls and are now married and living in Lancaster County with families of their own. In 2023, a year after their mother passed, the sisters took a trip to Florida to reminisce and visit Marco Island, where their parents enjoyed vacationing. W hile there, they talked about how they felt God prompting them to find a way to carry on their mother’s legacy by using their talents for God’s glory and sharing Jesus with others. After going on a dolphin tour in Florida, the sisters came up with the idea to use their talents to create a children’s book. The story centers on Daisy, a

He described the opportunity as his “dream job.” “ T h e r e ’s n o t m a n y people that go through my path,” he explained. “I stopped playing football in seventh grade. ... Ever since I started coaching, I knew I could do it forever. To get a chance to be a head coach, I just never thought with my path (that) it would be possible.” T he Braves went 3-7 overall last year and 1-6 in L ancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 play. They are only two years removed from the program’s first postseason trip, playing in the Class 3A Eastern Conference title game. Pequea Valley has only been playing football since 1998. Tibbins hopes to establish a culture of hard work and community in his first year on the job. “I just love the community, and I love a good challenge,” he said. “Coach Choi came pretty close to sustaining (success). We’ve gotten close to being really good consistently, and it’s had some ups and downs.” T ibbins already sees

the culture changing. The program has added some extra voluntary practices this summer, and they have been well attended. T he Braves are seeing more success with their weight-lifting program than ever before. “I’m really tr ying to develop a culture with the kids that it’s not just football,” he said. “ We have the huge fundraiser on Saturday, like building a culture and setting the expectations to be clearly understood. ... I’ve been very clear to the kids that I’d rather go to battle with 18 kids that have been at ever ything and wanted (to be there) more than 30 kids that are half in or half out.” On the field, Tibbins said that fans should expect the Braves to retain their base Wing-T offense and 4-4 defense that have been staples of the program since its inception. However, he made sure to say that there will be some new wrinkles in the game plan on Friday nights. “Success is judged a little differently at Pequea ,” Tibbins said. “Having kids here this year is a success. Do I want to win games? Absolutely, but I want to compete, right? T hat’s their goal.”

N e w P e q u e a Va l l e y head football coach Andy Tibbins did not have the upbringing of a typical high school football coach. While always an avid fan of the sport, his parents forbid him from playing football in high school after taking a few too many hits to the head while growing up. Nonetheless, he watched the sport constantly. His chance to get involved with the game would eventually come. Once his sons were old enough to get involved i n y o u t h fo o t b a l l , h e coached them in Garden Spot’s youth system for seven years up until he got involved with Pequea Valley’s junior high program. “I’ve always had a passion for (football),” he said. “Coaches and youth leaders had a great impact on my life, so I wanted to be able to give it back.” Tibbins, a Garden Spot alum, also coached American Athletic Union (AAU) basketball. A connection made through that experience put him in contact with Mike Choi, who was then the top guy within Pequea Valley’s football program. Choi was looking for an extra assistant with a season on the horizon, and Tibbins fit the bill. He’s been with the Braves ever since, working his way up through the ranks and holding titles such as middle linebackers coach, offensive line coach and special teams coordinator. Choi resigned in March to take the top job at Upper Merion. Tibbins got the nod to replace him, becoming the ninth head football coach in Pequea Valley history. His sons attend Linville Hill Chris-

CAP Members Attend Training, Receive Awards Members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron in Lancaster attended Hawk Mountain Ranger School, one of CAP’s longest-running and most challenging national cadet training programs, ending on July 19. This year is the 70th anniversary of Hawk Mountain, located in Kempton. During the weeklong training program, cadets rappelled, practiced land navigation, and learned wilderness survival and search and rescue operations. They learned aircraft search techniques used in downed aircraft missions, including clue detection, evidence search, and terrain-based search patterns. T here was also a visit from a medical helicopter crew, which landed at the training site and showed the cadets how air-medical teams prepare equipment,

History Presentation Set LancasterHistory will offer History Happy Hour on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Exchange at the Marriott Lancaster Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. History Happy Hour combines a history presentation with a relaxed social atmosphere. are a lot of communities who depend on water for their economies.” An advocate for clean water, ELANCO SWC will conduct the seventh edition of its annual Water Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, at Terre Hill Community Park, 210 Lancaster Ave. Designed to be an educational program, ELANCO SWC’s Water Day will host fourth-graders, mainly from the ELANCO School District. “The purpose is to bring consciousness and awareness to the students,” said Saad. “We talk about countries where you can’t drink the water; you’ve got to buy it - and some are developed countries. It’s a pretty incredible opportunity to make an impact on learning.” Following the arrival of the student-filled school buses, Water Day will be broken down into 10 learning stations featuring five topics Stream Buffers, Water Cycle, Where Does Your Poop Go?, Ground Water Model and Water Quality Testing. Supervised by their teachers, the fourth-graders and their classmates travel from station to station absorbing water-related information. The instruction is broken up by a 30-minute lunch. “The kids come in incredibly excited,” said Saad. “It’s a learning experience, and we want to make it fun. It’s interactive. You can see the fun and learning in their voices and attitudes. We want students to realize the importance of water resources and how to protect them. We talk about how water around here flows to Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay. We also have trivia to make them think. “We work with the schools to make sure the stations meet some aspect of their curriculum,” added Saad. “We’ve found that it works best for fourth-graders. We ask teachers for feedback, like, ‘Are there things we can improve on?’ We want to make this valuable for educators and students.” A majority of the 300 fourth-graders who will attend EL ANCO SWC ’s Water Day attend school at New Holland Elementary, Blue Ball Elementary or Brecknock Elementary. “When all the planning is done and the buses arrive, it’s like ‘Here we go,’” said

Saad, a resident of Terre Hill. “It takes three months of planning. It’s just a delight. (Co-coordinator Rhonda Hakundy and I) rotate around and make sure things are running well.” EL ANCO SWC, which meets quarterly, is a civic partnership that involves representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency, Lancaster Conservancy, nonprofits and township and municipal officials. “We play an educational role,” said Saad. “We try to play a positive role. We don’t play an enforcement role. We want to help communities meet their water standards. family history of any problems, we can tell them their risks for those problems,” added Dr. Kann. “We store all of this data digitally. If a question ever comes up in the future, we just have to ask the computer for the details.” The Gene Health Project was initiated three years ago, and to this point the study has collected more than 6,000 genetic samples from volunteers. The goal for the project is to collect another 4,000 samples, but the research won’t stop there. “After that, the hope is to continue the project,” said Dr. K ann. “ We ’ve already probably saved 1,000 lives and made 1,000 diagnoses. It’s the most remarkable way to do precision medicine. “Each of us has 23,000 g e n e s ,” co n t i n u e d D r. Kann. “ These genes are responsible for making proteins, and these proteins make us who we are. They determine things like the color of our eyes or the color of our hair. Basically, they make us who we are and allow us to be able to survive in most environments.” Spreading the word is one of the biggest challenges cur rently being faced by the Gene Health Project. Like any research, the bigger the sample size, the more accurate the findings. “ The more you spread it, the more you’re able to help people,” said Dr. Kann. “I would encourage people to sign up for the Gene Health Project and see what you can learn about yourself. It’s just a win, win, win. “Up until now, health care systems have been mostly reactive,” concluded Dr. Kann. “Now we’re putting a lot of effort into who’s going to get sick and how they’re going to get sick.”

Penn S tate Athletics and the Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, have announced a new multi-year partnership, naming Giant the Official Grocery Partner of Penn State Athletics with category exclusivity. Giant will also serve as the first cornerstone partner of the newly renovated West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium at Penn State University. As the first cornerstone partner of the renovated venue, Giant will have a custom gate sponsorship at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, which will be enhanced for the debut of the completed renovation in the fall of 2027. T he par tnership includes one-of-one entitlements, premium signage, in- venue prom o t i o n s , fo o t b a l l a n d basketball pregame activations, and additional assets across Penn State Athletics.

Giant will use student-athletes to support local store openings and its extensive community programs across the region. The partnership also names Giant as the p re s e n t i n g p a r t n e r o f the Penn State Cub Club and Penn State Spor ts Camps across all 31 sports programs.
