To teach is to respect. To learn is to honor. To understand is to appreciate. When the Wreaths Across America (WAA) Mobile Education Exhibit rolls to a stop, meaningful education comes about. Along with Linda Gerhart, Sandy Flory is WAA’s co-location coordinator for Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery annex.

“I want people to learn that we have to honor and remember these guys, while they’re still here and after they pass,” said Flory. “ They have sacrificed time away from their families. It provides a unique opportunity to come together and share stories of those who sacrificed. o avoid religious persecution, immigrants came to America, and some settled in the eastern Lancaster County area. The Released Time program promotes religious freedom, respects the

beliefs of others and provides children with an opportunity to connect with God. “Our mission is to teach God’s word to public school students,” said Deb Reimers, who’s been the Released Time program coordinator for the New Holland Elementary

It is the famous Senegalese environmental policy expert Baba Dioum who is credited with saying “In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we know and will know only what we are taught.” Those are words that the Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) takes to heart, words that LCCD lives by. “We hope that a student gains confidence in talking to others about conservation practices and what they’ve learned in the program,” said Sallie Gregory, who’s been LCCD’s education and operations coordinator for 25 years. “The program often gives students new directions as they consider their paths forward from high school graduation. It’s our hope that an ethic of conservation sticks with them in any direction and that they take one action step, even if that’s as simple as a shorter shower to conserve water, or as involved as studying forest management to create habitat through plantings and controlled burns.” Headquartered inside the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, LCCD conducts an annual Youth Conservation School. Over the last 47 summers, LCCD’s Youth Conservation School has gotten kids outside, taught them about the importance of the environment and introduced basic conservation skills. “The program shares the definition of conservation as the wise use of natural resources to prevent waste and damage, to maintain the supply we need to survive and that of future generations,” said Gregory. “If we

Over the last 80 years, the club has promoted, advocated for and explored the beauty of gardening. “In the 1930s, there was a men’s garden club in Lancaster County,” said Heil. “Since they did not allow women, women started their own garden club. In the beginning, new members had to be approved. Kathy Heil thoroughly enjoys gardening; she likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others. A resident of Manheim Tow nship, He il is the president of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County. “It’s therapy and enjoyment,” said Heil. “I enjoy seeing if the birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come

from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.” The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. The speaker will be Peter Glogovsky, a public historian and museum professional whose work focuses on Pennsylvania industrial history, cultural landscapes, and public memory. Program to Explore Flax Processing Lancaster Area Sewing Ne t work (L A S N) w ill present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Q uaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. D u r i n g t h e u p co m ing presentation, Tina Mickley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching and hackling flax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and

sewing thread. M i c k l e y, a s p i n n e r and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, b e came intereste d in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has g row n and pro cess e d her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she regularly interprets 18th- and 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the museum’s Sheep to Fabric and Field to Fabric classes. She also collects antique spinning wheels and helped plan two Antique Spinning W heel Symposiums in Pennsylvania. Guests may register for the program on arrival. See Flax pg 4

The exhibit will make an appearance from noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. T he event is fre e to attend, and ever yone is not only invited to attend, but also encouraged to do so. “We try to educate citizens in our area about our ve terans and g ive Vietnam veterans the welcome home they deserve,” s a i d F l o r y. “ We k n o w Vietnam veterans did not get the welcome home they should have. We are hoping we get a lot of veterans and a lot of people at the event.” The exhibit’s physical presence takes its shape from a handicapped-accessible 18-wheel tractor trailer, e quip p e d w i th a ramp and a lift. T he sides of the 60-foot-long tractor trailer pop out, allowing the rig to host 24 viewers in a pop-up theater, as well as displays, interactive exhibits and short stories. It tr uly is a sight to behold. “It’s going to be moving for some of the people, just because of the veterans on hand,” said Flory, a re s i d e n t o f D e nv e r. “I think it’s going to be informational for some people. “The Mobile Education Exhibit travels all over the place,” Flory continued. “I requested it come to our area. We had to have a place that could accommodate the tractor trailer, accommodate the traffic and a site that had both bathrooms and a place to eat.” This month will mark the first time that WAA’s exhibit has made a stop in Denver. We a v e r ’s M a r k e t i s one of just 18 stops that the Mobile Education Exhibit will make during its two-month tour. Before coming to Denver, the exhibit will make an appearance in Harrisburg, and it will make a stop in Allentown after Denver. Headquartered in Maine, Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit that seeks to honor the service of veterans by laying wreaths on veter-

ans’ final resting places around the holidays - this year on Saturday, Dec. 19. For the last four years, volunteers from the Denver area extension of WAA have placed 470 wreaths on veterans ’ graves in three local cemeteries. T h e C o c a l i c o re g i o n of WAA raises money to p u rc h a s e t h e w re a t h s through a series of annual fundraising events. “ We j u s t wa n t to spread the word so we can remember and honor our veterans,” said Flory. “ We have an increasing number of people coming to our events. students are divided into smaller groups by grades. The kids learn weekly Bible verses, sing songs and say prayers. Each student in the Released Time program receives a free Bible and backpack. “ There’s a feeling of excitement; (the students) are feeling good about themselves,” said Reimers. “It’s exciting for them to leave school. It’s a big deal to be with a whole different group of people. It’s a different atmosphere than they’re used to at school.” Last school year, about 115 students enrolled in the Released T ime program at Petra Church. Reimers said about twothirds of those students had already been in church. The Released Time program is staffed by more than 50 volunteers who are associated with churches across the New Holland region. The Released Time program in New Holland was started in 1992. “What’s amazing to me is how we’ve grown in favor in the community,” s aid R eimers . “ We ’ ve grown every year. Now, if we don’t get over 100 participants, we’re a little disappointed. We have people telling us that kids can’t wait to be part of the program.” Released Time is currently seeking volunteers for this year’s program. The students are picked up at 2:15 p.m. on 26 Thursdays throughout the school year by the Released Time mission, then transported to Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, for an hour of religious instruction. Accreditation Reaffirmed for LBC Lancaster Bible College (LBC) has announced that its accreditation was officially reaffirmed by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). MSCHE is an institutional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The commission affirmed that LBC met all the commission’s standards for educational quality, assessment, and continuous improvement. Accreditation by MSCHE is intended to assure students that their degree meets high academic and operational standards. It also allows the institution to participate in federal financial aid programs. Ryan Bomgardner is a comedian, a ventriloquist, a speaker, a musician, a storyteller and a funny guy. Ryan and Friends is a oneman show - well, sort of. “I find in life that there are a lot of people who have different preferences,” said Bomgardner. “We all have different perspectives. If I could bring everybody together and point out to people that we have more in common than we are different, then it’s worth it. I want to be a blessing.” A native of Ephrata and a 42- year-old resident of Lititz, Bomgardner is the Ryan par t of Ryan and Friends. There are about ten figments of his

The rest of the characters are just out of my imagination. Lessons go into the evening with lights out at 10 p.m. The schedule is full with instruction, opportunities to see conservation careers in action and many chances to try hands-on learning.” During the half-century since it was founded, the Youth Conservation School has positively influenced the young lives of hundreds of Lancaster County teenagers. “Each year, a new class of

students meets each other on the first day, sometimes with jitters and anxieties about trying something new,” said Gregor y. “By the last day, new friendships and the routine of a schedule have formed a cohesive group ready to take what they’ve learned and share with others. This one class then becomes the megaphone to help others understand why conservation is something we all need to consider on a daily basis, to maintain the natural resources we use every day to survive.” LCCD, which was founded in 1950, employs 38 workers. LCCD’s work is broken down into five departments - data and analysis, erosion and sedimentation, agriculture, watershed, and education/operations. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farm and Home C e n t e r, 1 3 8 3 A r c a d i a Road, Lancaster. It is free of charge. Representatives of state, county, and local agencies will be on hand to provide information on benefits for older Pennsylvanians, including health and wellness, assistive technologies, consumer protection, income tax assistance, veterans’ benefits, traffic safety, and utility assistance. The theme of this year’s Senior Expo is “America the Beautiful” in recognition of the nation’s 250th a n n i v e r s a r y.
