Summer Fun Raiser

According to Meghan Ervine, director of marketing and communications for CrossNet Ministries, the organization provides the setting for the annual Summer Nights Dinner and Auction fundraiser, and attendees put their personal touches on the evening. “Our goal is to make it a relaxing and fun event where you are with community, eating good and fun food, and listening to good music,” explained Ervine, who added that while tables will be set up by CrossNet, many who attend like to bring outdoor furniture from home. “People bring tablecloths and flowers and make it their own,” she stated.

CrossNet executive director Carl Edwards said he looks forward to an evening of ease in a beautiful outdoor setting. “The Summer Nights Dinner and Auction is one of my favorite events of the year,” he said. “It’s a casual event under the stars where guests are able to

enjoy great food, great conversation, and support the ongoing mission of CrossNet Ministries.”

The third annual Summer Nights Dinner and Auction will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., in Parking Lot 9 of Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. Parking will open at 5:30 p.m. Dress is casual. Unlimited food, live music, and a live auction

will be hallmarks of the event. Lawn games such as Connect Four, a giant Jenga, and cornhole will be available for attendees to play. There is a per person cost to attend the dinner, which may be changed in the case of inclement weather.

A focus on tasty food items will be a feature of this year’s Summer Nights event. “We will have nine food stands,” said Ervine, who

pointed out that is an increase from previous events. Seven stands will be devoted to dinner items, and they will include a smash burger stand, a country-fried chicken Caesar salad stand, a topped taters stand, a pulled beef taco stand, a wheel house pasta stand offering Parmesan cheese for pasta Alfredo, and a grilled street corn stand. Two dessert stands will feature ice cream

Church Announces Annual Peach Fest

Looking ahead to this year’s Peach Fest, organizer Betty Ferstler noted that there is a feeling of familiarity in the traditions associated with the event. “We do the same things (each year),” commented Ferstler. “It’s comfortable (because) people know what they will find. They stop in to shop and say ‘Hi’ to friends.”

The 26th annual Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church Peach Fest will be held on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the church, located at the corner of

While New Holland-area residents may only enjoy the New Holland Fair for a few days in early October, the work of organizing the fair goes on year-round. Fair president Paulene Redding and concessions manager Dave Whitaker are hard at work preparing for this year’s event, which will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with the annual parade

routes 322 and 897 in East Earl. The fest will run from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., and it will feature a flea market, book sale, activities for children, silent auction, and bake sale, along with food items for purchase.

The Peach Fest menu offers a variety of foods, but there is an emphasis on peaches, with peach-flavored items available for purchase throughout the day. Breakfast items will include pancakes with or without peach topping and whipped cream, sausages, and sausage and egg casserole. Lunch will feature hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, and pulled pork sandwiches. Sliced peaches with or

without whipped cream or ice cream will be on the dessert menu. A variety of baked good items will also be available for purchase for dessert. Coffee and other beverages will be sold by donation.

As in the past, free children’s activities will be part of the day. Children are invited inside the church library to take part. This year, free face painting, free ice cream, and free children’s books will be available.

A baked goods table will include homemade peach pies, as well as a variety of other pies, cakes, brownies, cookies, whoopie pies, and other baked treats.

confirmed that one person orders about a dozen pies each year and has done so for several years.

Church members have collected a number of used books to sell. “We have a wonderful variety of books at super reasonable prices,” said Ferstler, who added that coffee table books, history books, and books related to specific wars will be part of the mix. In addition to books, church members have gathered yard sale items that can be purchased by donation. “We call it the pay-what-you-want table,” said Ferstler. A table of costume jewelry will be set up for sale, as will a display of craft items made by members of the congregation.

a dozen items, including theme baskets and gift certificates. Among the many theme baskets organizers expect will be a Thai basket and a Pepperidge Farm basket.

Canning Peaches

As in the past, church members will bake fresh peach pies to be sold. This year, members will gather at the church on Friday, Aug. 15, to do the baking. Peach pies may also be preordered prior to Sunday, Aug. 10, by calling the church at 717-354-5573. Preordered pies may be picked up during the event. The homemade pies are a tradition of the fest that has proven popular among area residents. Church pastor Krisana Poontajak

Organizer Barbara Zook said that inside and outdoor flea market vendors will be on-site. According to Zook, flea market spaces will be available for rent on a first-come, firstserved basis. Individuals who have questions or are interested in reserving a vendor space may call 717-368-1769.

This year’s silent auction will consist of about

Each year, a percentage of the funds raised by the fest are donated to a nonprofit organization. This year, the Columbia Dream Center, located at 360 Locust St., Columbia, will receive 20%. The Dream Center is a mission of the Columbia Presbyterian Church, overseen by pastor Dave Powers. The purpose of the center is to service the community and surrounding area through food, shelter, clothing, and resources, filling needs and healing hurts. To that end, the center provides an emergency shelter, restart center, pantry, clothing bank, free lunches for children, Power Packs, and a soup kitchen. The Potter’s House is merely a place where God performs his transformational work.

“It comes from the Bible,” said Robert Schoonover, the executive director of The Potter’s House, explaining the organization’s name. “We are all His works. It’s about God molding us and creating us to be what He wants us to be.”

An addiction recovery center for men and women, The Potter’s House is headquartered at 261 School Lane, Ephrata. The Christ-centered ministry also operates residential facilities

Overseen by a board of directors, The Potter’s House takes a holistic approach to addiction recovery, one that focuses on an individual’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The Potter’s House also serves as a safe place for former inmates transitioning back into society. The Potter’s House services are provided to its clients free of charge.

“The Potter’s House’s goal is to administer the love of God on men and women dealing with addiction,” said Schoonover. “We just want to help them heal and enter into life for the long haul. We try to be living examples. Everyone here has been in recovery themselves, and they live active and full lives. We do a lot of trauma healing. We want to be friends, encourage accountability and teach (clients) how to respect themselves.”

The Potter’s House’s threephase, residential programs take up to a year to complete. The programs emphasize discipleship, life skills, prayer, confidence building and character development, and they assist participants in locating and keeping jobs.

“We love these individuals. We all believe they can change and grow,” said Schoonover, a resident of Conestoga. “I love seeing people being restored to hope. I like seeing the light bulb come on. You see people start to get confidence and see them live for more than themselves. They start helping people just like them. I like seeing families restored.

Lancaster Company Offers Rebates to Flood Victims

Lancaster-based U.S. Boiler Company has introduced a rebate program to help victims of flood damage throughout Lancaster County.

The recent severe weather events experienced in the Lancaster area damaged many heating systems. From now through Tuesday, Sept. 30, U.S. Boiler Company is offering a special tiered rebate program for residents whose boilers were damaged by floods.

Homeowners who purchase a new cast-iron gas-fired boiler are eligible for a $300 rebate. Those

and conclude on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 4, when the rides, games, and concessions close up.

Both Redding and Whitaker were eager to share details of the behindthe-scenes efforts that go into creating those four days of fun. “We have two new board members who joined in February,” said Redding. “Jonathan Campbell is doing the premium book, and Thomas Simers is our website manager.” Redding shared that the

website had recently been redone. “There are lots of improvements, and it looks beautiful,” she pointed out. “We have been getting lots of compliments on it.” Redding also mentioned that she is grateful to former board member Barb Beears. “She has been involved in the fair since she was a kid,” said Redding, who noted that while Beears is retiring from the fair board, she will be staying on as a volunteer with the fair. “It’s important to thank her for all those years (of service), especially because she isn’t retiring from volunteering,” pointed out Redding.

Because there are a number of costs associated with holding the fair, a new fundraiser will be held beginning this year. On the morning of Oct. 4, the first Funnel Cake 5K will be held. According to Redding, the 5K route will traverse the streets that are closed for the fair, and runners will need to do four laps to complete the distance. Whitaker noted that the route will begin on Main Street near Railroad Avenue and head west to the Meadow Creek Barbecue parking lot, where a left turn will take runners to Franklin Street. A shortcut through the New Holland EMS parking lot will take participants back to Main Street. More information about the run will be available in the New Holland Fair book when it is released. Registration will be discounted and a free T-shirt will be given to those who register prior to race day. On the day of the run, T-shirts will be distributed while they are available.

Other fundraising efforts will include a sponsored winner’s circle for photo opportunities. The fair board is also considering offering table cover sponsorships for exhibits. Sponsorship would align with the exhibit, such as grocery stores sponsoring the produce displays. Redding mentioned that fundraising efforts will help defray costs of the elevator that was recently installed in the Farmers Day Association building at the corner of Franklin Street and Roberts Avenue. The elevator will make it possible for exhibits to be displayed on the upper floor, and Redding stated that needlepoint, which has been crowded into its assigned space for some time, will move upstairs for this year’s fair.

This year’s parade marshal will be Daniel G. Wuchter, owner of Danny’s Fine Foods. Whitaker noted that last year when he was conversing with Wuchter, he learned that the vendor had been bringing his food trucks to the streets of New Holland for 50 years. Whitaker noted that Wuch-

ter brings several different food trailers to the event and that they are set up on Main Street between Roberts Avenue and Railroad Avenue each year.

Redding said that the buzz about the flower exhibits is that Kate Merchlinski, who now oversees the decorative display for the Farmers Day Association, has arranged with the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society to have a live hive at the fair on Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St. One important change to this year’s exhibit process will be the way exhibitor cards are handled. “We will not mail exhibitor cards this year,” said Redding, citing postage costs as the reason for the change. “Cards will be handed out at the CrossNet Youth Center.” Redding explained that the system of handing out cards has been used for new exhibitors, and she added that more information on the process may be found at https://newhollandfair .org. Readers with specific questions may email info@ newhollandfair.org or call 717-354-5880.

and gelato and Lancaster fried mini whoopie pies. Beverages will include lemonade, iced tea, water, and - new this year - iced coffee from Twin Valley Coffee.

“Garden Spot Village does an amazing job catering,” commented Ervine.

Both Edwards and Ervine will provide updates on the ministry during the event. Ervine will discuss the mission and vision of the ministry, and Edwards will talk about the warehouse at 110 W. Franklin St. that is in the process of being remodeled into offices, a market, and more for the ministry.

Renovations to the property began in September 2024 and are scheduled to be completed by the end of August, with move-in projected for September.

“You hear CrossNet updates, but then you end

with a live auction, which is super fun,” said Ervine of the bidding for donated items that will conclude the event. This year, 15 to 20 live auction items will be up for bids, with Patrick Morgan once again donating his services as auctioneer. An Outer Banks vacation in a bungalow near the beach and a Chesapeake Bay house vacation will be among the experiences to be auctioned off. A Plum Perfect Photography package and a Breeo Fire Pit package, featuring an adjustable grill in a case, will also go up for bids, as will a premium car detailing package and two tickets to a Philadelphia Eagles game. Door prizes, which include new items donated by local merchants, will be given away throughout the event. “We are hoping to raise $25,000 with the live

auction,” noted Ervine. Edwards pointed out that the Summer Nights event offers a unique experience with its outdoor setting and variety of activities.

“Attendees can look forward to a relaxing atmosphere, live music, and a variety of auction items,” he said.

Readers who would like to purchase tickets to the event may visit www.elancocross .org, call 717-355-2454, or email office@elancocross.org by Friday, Aug. 15.

The Potter’s House employs 14 staff members. The organization is financially self-sustaining and benefits from fundraisers and donations from churches, community organizations and businesses.

Bird Club Posts Meeting, Field Trip

The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will meet on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area’s Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens. Mike Moore will present “Unconfusing Fall Warblers: A Practical Birding Program to Prepare You for Fall Migration!”

Moore will discuss warblers and how they are not as confusing as they may appear, and he will explain how to identify warblers in the fall. He will cover all of the warblers commonly seen in the mid-Atlantic area.

Moore is a retired biology professor and a past president of Delaware Ornithological Society. He started birding in middle school and has had a lifelong passion for birds, which included completing his doctorate at the University of Washington on the field endocrinology of White-crowned Sparrows. He served on the biology faculty at Arizona State University for 27 years and then moved to the University of Delaware, where he retired after 11 years. He has been funded throughout his career by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and has published nearly 100 papers in scientific journals. He also has a passion for dragonflies and serves as a vice president for the Dragonfly Society of the Americas.

The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-8563851 or 717-725-2717.

The LCBC will also offer a field trip to Clark Nature Preserve in Pequea on Saturday, Aug. 9, starting at 7 a.m. Participants will explore the meadow and woodlands for summer birds such as buntings, vireos, and tanagers. Attendees must register by 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8, by contacting trip leader Sarah Gotwols at 717-940-3804 or sarahann71880@gmail.com.
