FAIR AND AUCTION

Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team and the American Cancer Society will benefit from a country fair and benefit auction to be held at Red Run Campground, 877 Martin Church Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Aug. 18. Activities scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will feature crafts, vendors, food, bingo, and more. The auction will begin at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public. LOCAL HISTORY

The Beidler House, 1130 Old River Road, Gibraltar, will host a presentation about Historic Poole Forge on Sunday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Dawn Rise Ekdahl, executive director of Poole Forge, will discuss the site and how the ironmaster’s house, tenant houses, and surrounding park were restored and became a popular gathering place for the whole community. originally scheduled for July 21 in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., have been rescheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4. The event is a benefit for Terre Hill Park and is sponsored by the Terre Hill Days Committee. Admission and parking will be free. The Aug. 4 Terre Hill Summer Fun Night will be an evening filled with special events, food, and entertainment. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m., when food and game stands will open. Additional activities will include an airplane candy scramble at 5:45 p.m. and walk-in cash bingo at 6 p.m. Ruth R. Di Sipio will perform acoustic music at 6:30 p.m., and Chad Reinert will present country music at 7 p.m. The evening will conclude with fireworks at 10 p.m. The movie night that was scheduled for Aug. 4 will now take place on Sunday, Aug. 5, starting at dusk. “Peter Rabbit� will be shown, and refreshments will be available. Bowmansville Days Activities Scheduled GOTR Fall Registration To Open By Ann Mead Ash

The 2018 Bowmansville Days event will include a number of familiar activities, including bingo, live music, a variety of food items to purchase, and the annual Ox Trot 5 Miler. Jessica Sensenig, Bowmansville Days secretary, is especially looking forward to having a new organization present at the event. “The Veterans Coalition of Southeast Pennsylvania is coming this year,� said Sensenig. “We will set a box at their stand for (donations of) canned goods, especially canned vegetables (for the organization to use making meals).� According to Sensenig, the organization gathers clothing for veterans, helps those in need find shelter, and makes meals for veterans year round. “It’s a good cause, and we would like to get them as much support as possible,� she added. A candy scramble (top photo) and chainsaw carving demonstrations (right photo) will both be part of Bowmansville Days, which will be held in the Bowmansville Memorial Park from Aug. 10 through 12. Bowmansville Days will also feature food, a 5-mile run, a quoits tournament, and live music.

Freedom Award Project Will Help Educate Campers By Ann Mead Ash

Campers at Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata now have an added opportunity to learn about the wonders of creation as they traverse the 110 acres the camp offers. In pursuit of his Freedom Award, Trail Life USA trailman David Mease, a member of Trail Life Troop PA 0316, which meets in Lititz, built four outdoor kiosks he calls Creation Discovery Stations to help teach campers about certain insects, trees, animals, and birds, the majority of which are considered native to Pennsylvania. In January, Mease contacted Woodcrest Retreat executive director Cliff Martin about the possibility of See Freedom Award Project pg 5

During the spring 2018 semester, Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster boasted teams in every school district in the county. Jennifer West, program director for GOTR Lancaster, expects about 850 girls in elementary and middle school to sign up to benefit from the program in the new school year, noting that many of those will be introduced to the new curriculum, available to girls in the third- through fifthgrade program this fall. A Community Of Recovery By Ann Mead Ash

For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters.
