Drew Metcalf, of We Help Children, has an offer for those who want to help children but are not sure how. “This is an opportunity for people to get involved,” said Drew. “Everyone wants to do something to help. We would love to show people how.” Getting involved can start with attending A Sweet Night of Music, a drop-in event to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, 3716 E. Newport Road, Gordonville. The menu will feature stations of sweets and beverages, and Drew, along with his wife, Cindy, will talk about their ministry helping children in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and Chicago, Ill. Live music for the evening will be provided by the Horst Brothers, a local gospel See We Help Children pg 7

part of the autumn event. The tug-owar was begun by James Lafferty in 1965. Unfortunately, due to a number of factors in recent years, participation among local fire companies was waning. In 2018, no tug-o-war was held during the New Holland Farmer’s Fair. “All last year people said how much they would miss it,” recalled Paulene Redding, who oversees the New Holland Farmers Fair parade that kicks off the fair each year. “We didn’t do it, and it wasn’t the same.” Redding and one of her parade sponsors discussed the situation, and he noted how much the Plain community See Tug-0-War pg 2
The Fireman’s Tug-O-War was a fixture at the New Holland Farmers Fair for more than 50 years. After being discontinued in 2018, the rope pull will return in an open format. Organizers are encouraging area businesses, churches, and schools to form teams to take part in this year’s event.
Jessica Sensenig, secretary for Bowmansville Days, which will take place Friday to Sunday, Aug. 9 to 11, wants area residents to know that the organizers of the event work hard to include local entities in the celebration. “We try to have local nonprofit organizations for (food and games),” said Sensenig. “We want the Boy Scouts, churches, and fire companies (to participate) because fundraising is hard.” This year’s Bowmansville Days event, which will be held in the Bowmansville Memorial Park, located along Church Street in Bowmansville, will See Bowmansville Days pg 3
Pupventures Lets The Dogs Out By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Want to make a difference in the life of a dog but cannot commit to full-time ownership? Then you might be a candidate for Pupventures, a program of the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. Center volunteers have been taking dogs staying at the shelter, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on adventures in the community. “ We have volunteers take the dogs out almost every day,” said site manager Rachel Golub. “We have a list of approved locations for volunteers to take the dogs to as well as general rules for taking the dogs out, such as no greeting other dogs, no going to dog parks, and no one under 18
is allowed to handle the dog. Most people take the dogs to one of the nature preserves, hiking trails, or parks on our approved location list, but they can opt to go to places like Lowe’s or Splits & Giggles as long as we’ve cleared the dog See Pupventures pg 6
Volunteers may take shelter dogs on field trips as part of the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center’s Pupventures program.
