More than five years ago, when Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) chief Darryl Keiser was planning the
first Cadet Camp, he noted that students ages 10 to 14 who took part were expected to be serious about what they were learning. From June 9 through 13, when this year’s camp was held, 34 students
from nearly 10 different school districts - including one student who came from beyond State College to take part - developed skills with a curriculum that included vehicle rescue, medical intervention, and a
presentation by Lancaster County’s own SWAT team.
The group started each day by dividing into squads for exercises such as running laps and pushups. “We get the blood moving right

Back in 2010, when Drew and Cindy Metcalf began their ministry to children in orphanages in Guatemala, they held a fundraiser called “Walk to Guatemala.” Fast forward to 2021, and the Metcalfs’ ministry moved to The Haft, a 105-acre converted sheep farm in Bradford County where Drew and Cindy help families find restoration and healing from trauma. “When we were in Guatemala, we realized one of the best ways to help children is to help their parents heal,” shared Cindy.
“We provide counseling and ministry services for free as part of our Christian ministry,” added Drew.
To help support the Metcalfs’ work at The Haft, a 100-mile bicycle ride around Lancaster County is being planned for Saturday, Aug. 16, beginning at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Slower riders may choose to start at 6 a.m., and faster riders may start at 7 a.m. A family and friends ride to Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community in East Earl and back to Petra will begin at 1 p.m. A color ride for children will be

Lydia Nolt noted that it’s one of her most memorable events of the year.
Mennonite Life’s 14th annual Storytelling Night will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, at Landisville Mennonite Church, 3320 Bowman Road, Landisville.
Everyone is invited. There is no admission fee, but Mennonite Life will welcome donations to support its mission.
“Storytelling Night is a highlight for me,” said Nolt, who is an educator at Mennonite Life. “It’s one of my favorite events. I love attending. The stories that come out of it are so powerful. When you have two people in conversation with each other, different things come to light.”
Hyacinth Stevens and Kevin Ressler will be the guest speakers. Stevens is a bishop in LMC’s New York District and works as executive director of Mennonite Central Committee East Coast. (LMC used to stand for Lancaster Mennonite Conference, but that group is now a nationwide conference.)
Mennonite Life said that Stevens has spent 12 years pastoring King of Glory Tabernacle in the active Christ-centered community
in the Bronx where she was raised. “She is passionate about embodying Anabaptist peace witness and bringing the Good News to her community wherever she goes,” Mennonite Life said. Stevens and her husband, Benjamin, have four children.
Ressler is the CEO at Alliance for Health Equity and former president and CEO of United Way of Lancaster County, among other nonprofit leadership roles. A biography provided
by Mennonite Life said, “He is rooted in his identity as a person of faith as he works for an equitable peace and justice for all, through listening and honoring the voices in the community. Ressler aims to challenge and transform unjust systems in Lancaster city, where he and his wife, Melissa, are raising their family.”
Both speakers will share a series of seven four-minute

away in the morning,” shared GSFR safety officer Jaime Weir.
Early in the week, campers met at the GSFR training center at 1156 Reservoir Road, East Earl, for training that focused on rescue. “They did semi-technical evolutions with ropes and mechanical advantages and the Stokes basket,” reported Weir. A Stokes basket is utilized to carry or lower a victim using a rope system. Inside the building at the training center, the group participated in confined space exercises. “They did rapid intervention team and search stuff and vehicle rescue,” noted Weir, who added that on June 10, cadets were invited to return in the evening to watch GSFR firefighters put out vehicle fires as part of a regular training exercise.
Activities that took place at the fire station, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, included engine company work such as pulling hoses off the engines and flowing water. “We had a tanker from Fivepointville out here, so (campers) could see how a portable tank works,” said Weir. “They were moving charged hose lines around.”
On the afternoon of June 11, the focus turned toward medical intervention. Campers had the opportunity to earn a certificate from a Stop the Bleed class and to
practice adult and child CPR.
“They were introduced to Penn Med 1,” said Weir. Penn Med 1 is a physician response vehicle operated by Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Campers also toured ambulances from Fivepointville Ambulance Association and New Holland EMS. Later that afternoon, WellFlight, the WellSpan helicopter, landed in the back parking lot of the New Holland station. “We’ve tried for a number of years to get helicopters in,” stated Weir. “We were able to get one for this year.”
On June 12, the focus shifted again. Ladder truck operations were explored in the morning, and in the afternoon, campers learned about local law enforcement with a visit from New Holland’s police department and the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team, which Weir explained is the county’s name for a SWAT team. A search-andrescue canine presentation was held as well.
As in the past, at least 25 GSFR members donated their time to running the camp. Weir reported that about 15 assisting agencies, including Bowmansville, Martindale, and Weaverland Valley fire companies, took part. Weir said a number of ELANCO School District students were among the campers, but youths also came from Solanco and Penn Manor school districts, and two students came from Mohnton.
This year, the cadet graduation ceremony held at the end of the week was combined with the GSFR annual banquet. “The kids get to see the action throughout the week and to participate,” said Weir. “But there’s another component. There’s the celebratory side of things.”
Over the five years that camp has been held, a few of the attendees have gone on to become GSFR junior firefighters. Keiser noted before the first camp that there is a sense of purpose and reward in firefighting. He added that the discipline involves dedication and can be a long-term commitment that ultimately serves and betters the community. Readers who would like to know more about GSFR may visit www.gsfr39.net. Individuals who have questions about the camp may call 717-354-8311 or email chief@gsfr39.net.

Music Event Will Help Fund Adoption
According to Matthew Waltman, adopting children was a “staple” with his family of origin. “My sister is adopted from China,” he said. “(We were part of) a community with other families adopting internationally, and there were play groups and get-togethers specifically to celebrate adoption and make (the adoptees) feel special for what made them different,” Matthew shared.
With that background, it was only natural for Matthew and his wife, Nicole, to opt for adoption with their own family. “I knew that was something I wanted to do for sure,” said Matthew. With Nicole and their 4-year-old daughter on board, the Waltmans decided to pursue private adoption, and they are currently working through that process.
Adoption is not an inexpensive endeavor. Unlike with biological children, there is no insurance that covers part of the cost. To offset the expenses, Matthew and Nicole have organized a night of music featuring food and help from family members. The event will be open to the public.
Music at The Homestead will be held at 3700 Holly Drive, Gordonville, on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 5 to 9 p.m. There is an admission charge to enjoy the live music of three acts. Food trucks will be present selling a variety of items.
Yard games will be set up for attendees to enjoy, and beverages will be available by donation. A silent auction will be held as well.
“Music is something that I love,” shared Nicole, who has lined up bands of different genres to play at the event. “I have a lot of family members and friends who are musicians.”
The Peach Bottom Boys is a bluegrass group made up of Nicole’s cousins. Ryan and Alyssa Mayersky will play country music at the event. “(Alyssa is) my sister, and my brother-in-law (is Ryan),” said Nicole. “He is an up-and-coming country musician.” Members of the third band are related to Matthew. “30 East is Matthew’s cousin’s band,” explained Nicole. “They all do gigs on the side.”
Food at the event will be offered for purchase by Nano Burger, The Eggroll Lady, and Joe on the Go Coffee Co. For dessert, Penny’s Ice Cream will be onsite. “Penny’s is a favorite at The Homestead,” shared Nicole.
The silent auction will feature a variety of donated items. “We will have a large gift basket from the Speckled Hen,” shared Matthew. Other items that will be up for bids will include artwork, pottery, and a professional photography session. Nicole shared that a spa package from Darla’s Hair Care and Spa and a consult and adjustment by a local chiropractor will be auctioned off, as will a massage.
More information about the event may be found
at https://tinyurl.com/ bp64cv3w. Organizers request that those planning to attend register ahead.
The Waltmans hope to raise $10,000 from the event. They noted that The Homestead is a family-owned business and that family members will be playing the music and family and friends will donate items for the auction. “It’s family, and it’s personal,” explained Nicole. “But I want the community to come out and support us and enjoy an evening of music and for it to be an enjoyable time for everybody.”
This is the 41st year for Churchtown Day, which is traditionally held on the first Saturday in August. Yard sales will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities and at Caernarvon Township Park, which is where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. A highlight of the event this year will be the Caernarvon Historical Society’s own flea market held at its headquarters, 2148 Main St., Narvon. “We had (the flea market) inside and outside. This year, it will be inside,” noted Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian. “People can walk around and pick up what they want and then pay for it (at the cashier). The front doors will be open.”
Items for sale in the society’s building will include frames; toys; books; housewares, including glassware; and seasonal decor, including Christmas ornaments, Easter items and Halloween decorations. “Everything (for sale) was a donation,”
Styer said, noting that all items will be reasonably priced.
Those interested in renting a yard sale space in the park are asked to call Styer at 717-413-8342 or stop by the historical society any Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Vendors will get a 12-foot-wide space, and they must bring their own tables.
Vendors are responsible for cleaning up any debris and items they do not sell. The historical society reserves the right to refuse yard sale vendors who are not offering family-friendly items for sale.
In addition, the Caernarvon Fire Company will offer a pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. on Aug. 2. The menu will include a stack of pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee. There will be separate prices for adults and children ages 4 to 10.
The fire company is located at 2145 Main St., Narvon. For more information, search for “Caernarvon Fire Company” on Facebook.
Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the society and the upkeep of its building, which includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. The building is open on Wednesdays
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. The building houses a library of history books and research books, obituaries and an archives room. Museum displays are changed several times a year.
The society also presents a “Let’s Talk History” program on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.

stories, and they will alternate. “Neither of the storytellers will know what the other one has prepared, and I also do not know what they have prepared,” said Nolt. “It’s truly that evening you see what the Spirit weaves together. We’re all experiencing it for the first time.”
Nolt added, “Part of our mission here is to tell the stories of Lancaster Mennonites and interrelated communities and for people to know their own stories and know each other’s stories. By doing that, people recognize the humanity in connecting through learning about each other’s lives and experience and faith and histories.”
Mennonite Life rotates Storytelling Night between county churches and seeks speakers from a variety of backgrounds. “A goal is to recognize that the stories of Lancaster Mennonites are
so, so diverse,” said Nolt.
“They’re bringing wisdom from their experiences with their communities here in Lancaster, maybe from growing up, maybe stories from childhood.”
Nolt noted that Storytelling Night is an entertaining event regardless of one’s religious beliefs. “You do not have to be Mennonite to find meaning in this evening and also to enjoy it,” said Nolt.
“I think maybe the general public has a certain idea of what a stereotypical Mennonite experience is like. This might be a chance to learn something new about the Mennonite community.”
It is also an opportunity for people to take a brief break from their busy lives.
teer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society was established in 1975 and is located in the former Caernarvon Presbyterian Church. In addition to Churchtown Day in August, the society hosts a Memorial Day celebration. For more information about the historical society, visit www.caernarvon lancaster.org/community.
“It’s a chance to power down, listen really closely, and meet community members in a way that is not possible in a lot of other settings,” Nolt said.
Mennonite Life’s mission is to create a space where diverse communities can connect across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own stories.
The Mennonite Life Visitors Center, located at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, houses the organization’s archives, which holds the historical records of Lancaster Mennonites, Nolt said. “We also have the Biblical Tabernacle Experience, which is a scale reproduction of the biblical tabernacle and tells the story of God dwelling with His people,” she added.
Mennonite Life also operates the 1719 Museum at 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Nolt said that museum tells the story of the Herr family and the neighboring Conestoga-Susquehannock communities.
Swiss Pioneer Preservation Association will hold Big Spring Farm Days on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1 and 2, at the Big Spring Farm, 735 Spruce Road, New Holland. Hay Day will occur on Aug. 1 starting at 1 p.m., followed by Farm Day on Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
During Hay Day, many tools and pieces of old farm equipment will be on display. Equipment operators will be available to answer questions about the processes being used.
On Farm Day, attendees can see threshing demonstrations by hand, with horse power, or powered by steam engines and tractors. Other activities will include German singing, weaving

“It was out of reach for most people,” stated Drew. “There were mountains.” To make the fundraiser accessible to more people, the ride was moved to the greater New Holland area. “We want it to be for all Lancaster County to want to ride the loop around Lancaster,” stated Drew, who added that the variety of rides being offered is meant to open the event to more people. Organizers hope to have all the riders back at Petra for the color ride. “So everyone can ride through the color stations,” explained Drew. Those taking part in the color ride are encouraged to wear white T-shirts to the event. “It’s like a color (5K), but for bikers,” said Drew.
According to Drew, The Haft is busy. “It’s full,” he stated. “We have individuals and families coming, and people come for rest, retreat, and restoration.”
In addition to counseling, The Haft offers an opportunity to take part in equine therapy, as well as spending time with a number of other therapy animals, including goats, chickens, and guinea hens. The grounds feature a 10-acre pond for kayaks, canoes, and fishing, as well as trails for hiking. “We have a prayer trail,” said Cindy, who noted that Daniel Kolb, a member of the wood shop at Garden Spot Village, has created signs with Bible verses on them to station along the trail.
Over the years, Cindy has been known for her music ministry, and she
A new addition this year are two cabins on the lake for rent, which will offer a new income source to help support the work of The Haft. “We are hoping to have people come and stay,” said Cindy, who added that the spot by the lake is great for getting away.
“There isn’t even much cell service here, so put your cellphone away and focus on whatever God is bringing up inside you,” pointed out Drew.
The mission of The Haft is close to both Drew and Cindy’s hearts. “We want to help the whole family be stable and able to raise kids in an environment where they can really flourish,” said Cindy. “So many are in traumatic situations so if we can help the whole family to heal from their own traumas and be a strong family together that is the support system that God designed,” she stated.
Drew noted that those who take part in the fundraiser are helping to make that mission a reality. “We are incredibly thankful for everyone who can come out that day and bring their friends and family,” he said.

The Central Pennsylvania Bicycling Trifecta will combine three events in central Pennsylvania to offer cyclists a riding challenge close to home.
Tiffany’s Pink Pedal Ride will be held on Saturday, Aug. 9, beginning at the Penn State Health Breast Center in Hershey. The route distance options are 15, 32, or 62 miles. The event was started in 2024 and raises funds to support metastatic breast cancer research. Participants are encouraged to wear pink. For more information, visit https:// pinkpedal.org/about/.
The Covered Bridge Classic will take place on Sunday, Aug. 17. The event will offer routes of 25, 50, 65, or 100 miles that will go through several historic covered bridges in Lancaster County. The ride draws more than 1,000 participants each year, and proceeds will benefit the Lancaster Bicycle Club grant program, which funds covered bridge restoration and bike-related initiatives. More than $590,000 has been raised since 1999. For more information, visit https://coveredbridge classic.com/.
The Harrisburg Bicycle Club’s Three Creek Century will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21. The ride will offer low-traffic road route options of 21, 30, 50, 62, 75, and 100 miles, or riders can opt to ride 18 miles on the nearby Cumberland Valley Rail Trail. All routes except the rail trail will circle back to the starting point at the Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company near Newville, offering flexibility on route distances for riders. Proceeds will benefit the Harrisburg Bicycle Club and its grant program, which supports bike-related organizations and projects. For more information, visit www .threecreekcentury.com.
Everyone who registers will receive a discounted registration to all three events plus a commemorative pint glass. Registration for the trifecta will close on Thursday, July 31. Registration for all three events can be made at the same time at https://tinyurl .com/trifectaregistration.
