Hay Has Its Days at Big Spring Farm

Sometimes the simplest things make the biggest differences. Take hay, for example.
Farmers use hay as feed, as bedding and insulation and as part of responsible land management techniques. As farming practices have evolved over the last few hundred years, hay has remained constant, its use consistent.
As part of its mission, the Swiss Pioneers Preservation Association (SPPA) is recognizing and featuring the nutritious, fiber-rich feed as part of its Hay Days celebration.
“It’s supposed to be educational,” said organizer Raymond Zimmerman of Hay Days. “We
want to show people how farmers farm. People outside of farming circles don’t realize how important
hay is. Hay is important because farmers want to keep the animals fed over the winter. In the spring,

“I think this fundraiser is another way for a sad mom to keep alive her son’s legacy of being such a caring, giving person,” said Marie Crawford, the organizer of
the JFF Cancer Benefit Sale and Jimmy’s mom. “One of his last requests was to donate to people like himself, and this is how I do it.”
“The world is a darker, sadder place without him in it,” continued Crawford. “He was loved by many, many people. We all miss his beautifully loving, caring soul. His smile was awakening; his laughter was infectious. Many of his friends still carry him with them. When
Churchtown Residents Bond Over Bargains

It has a rich heritage, deep traditions and a bright future. It is home to community-oriented people who worship, care for their neighbors and always try to do the right things.
Churchtown is deserving of its own day.
The Caernarvon Historical Society is one of the sponsors of the annual Churchtown Day, a time when local residents come together to celebrate what it means to be from a smalltown. In the case of Churchtown, that means yard saling.
This year’s Churchtown Day festivities will take place during the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 1.
“We have tons of people who come out to shop and see what they can find,” said Yvonne Styer, president of the historical society. “Some people browse. People come out early. At 1:00, it’s pretty much all done. It’s a lot of locals. We’ve done it for so many years that people know it’s the first Saturday in August.”
Churchtown Day will begin with a hearty, all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, juice and coffee, from 6 to 10 a.m. at Caernarvon Fire Company, 2145 Main St., Narvon.
The flea market activities will start at 7 a.m. and conclude informally at noon. The townwide flea market will be centered around the Caernarvon Historical Society and Museum at 2148 Main St., Narvon, where more than 50 yard sale merchants will be plying their wares and offering hidden

more higher-energy feed is used. In the 1700s and 1800s, it was either muscle or horsepower, so hay was important.”
SPPA will present this year’s edition of its annual Hay Days from 1 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Big Spring Farm, 735 Spruce Road, New Holland. The community event is free to attend, and all are welcome.
There will be plenty of parking available in the meadow, and horsedrawn wagons will transport visitors to the main events area.
Hay Days will feature demonstrations of hay making and storage on the farm throughout the years. The event will include early tools, tractors, displays, mowers, loaders and balers.
There will also be saw milling, stone crushing and pulverizing, horse training, meat smoking, corn shelling, log sawing and weaving and spinning demonstrations, as well as singing and tours of the 1786 Peter Martin log cabin. Food like pulled pork, sausage, iron kettle soups, freshly baked bread and ice cream will be available for lunch or supper.
“We work with the weather that God gives us,” said Zimmerman. “We demonstrate how hay is processed and put into the barn. We go through it step by step, and we show 25 different steps. There’s
always a concern of getting the hay in the barn before it rains on it.
“We just do what farmers do,” he added. “We have a lot of horses in our event.”
As many as 1,000 total visitors are expected to attend during both sessions of SPPA’s Hay Days.
“There’s no one else who does hay demonstrations like this,” said Zimmerman, a resident of New Holland. “There are a lot of people who haven’t seen this before.”
SPPA began hosting Hay Days in 2015.
“We do sort of the same types of things and (have) gotten better at them,” said Zimmerman. “We started by sharing the hand tools.”
Overseen by a governing board, SPPA consists of 150 members and a similar amount of people interested in the nonprofit. SPPA’s mission is “to explore the past way of life and preserve the religious values and character of the Swiss pioneers.”
“We want to inspire our communities with the stories of the faithful Swiss pioneers, who, in the fear of God, followed Jesus through fire, water and pestilence to come to the new world, and specifically to the Weaver Valley for religious freedom,” said Zimmerman. “Our goals are to preserve, teach and demonstrate, and to establish a museum for the present and future generations.
“We’re sort of quite unique,” concluded Zimmerman. “We want to put more emphasis on education than entertaining. We want to make it interesting.”

Ephrata Cloiser Plans Ice Cream Social
Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will open its grounds to the community on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. for its annual ice cream social. This fundraising event, a project of the Ephrata Cloister Associates in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, will feature ice cream and brownie sundaes scooped by celebrity dippers, including WIOV morning radio host Casey Allyn, Ephrata Mayor Tom Reinhold, journalist and novelist Larry Alexander, state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Blue Ridge’s Cindy Mellinger. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge. The New Cloister Restaurant will provide the ice cream. A highlight of the event will be nature crafts and games under the tent in the meadow. Prizes will be awarded for the first 50 children who complete the Nature Scavenger Hunt. Children can make their own wooden necklaces and explore the nature trail along the Cocalico Creek. Attendees can learn more about the Historic Landscape Restoration Initiative that will transform the property into a natural habitat for local wildlife, flowers, and plants.
Guides in historical costumes will be stationed in the buildings to greet visitors and interpret the history of the 18th-century structures. The acoustic duo the Groove Slingers will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. in the new amphitheater. The duo plays a variety of blues, rock, jazz, country, bluegrass, and pop, as well as original music.
Visitors are encouraged to stroll the grounds of the Cloister, pet therapy dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), and watch demonstrations by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild and Friends. Visitors will also be able to play Colonial games and try their hand at the art of Colonial printing on the reproduction printing press.
Event attendees may also learn more about charity in Ephrata and visit with representatives of local nonprofits.
The museum store will feature 18th-century reproduction toys, crafts, and souvenirs; books of historical interest; and local handmade arts and crafts. Visitors may also purchase cards, candles, pottery, sleigh bells, and chocolate in the store.

Passports Transport Holders Back in Time

To truly discover Lancaster is to uncover its history. To truly discover who we are, we must understand our origins.
A destination marketing organization, Discover Lancaster has come up with a unique way to explore a shared past and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.
“We want to expand people’s horizons,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications for 18 years. “The passport helps to expand people’s horizons. We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”
This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history. Discover Lancaster’s passport is a
free commemorative booklet that can be picked up at the organization’s headquarters at 501 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, or any of the 23 local historic sites that are part of the tour celebrating America 250. When passport holders visit the participating Lancaster County locations, they will receive a custom-made collectible stamp that can be pasted into their passport booklets.
The free passports also feature deals and coupons that can be redeemed at the 23 historic locations and at other points of interest around Lancaster County. The promotion is good from now until the end of the year.
“Physically, the passport is made of heavy material,” said Cliff, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s something that’s going to be a keepsake if someone is inclined. It’s a neat way to commemorate how you celebrated this special year.”

“We’ve got a heapin’ helping of history here,” said Cliff. “Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities. It’s one of the very few United States capitals, even though it was only for one day. A lot of people forget that around the 1700s, Lancaster was the western frontier. I’d say we’re pretty historic in a lot of ways. I think on the historic landscape of central Pennsylvania, Lancaster more than holds its own. If the passport helps people explore some of the history, we think that’s a good thing for the local economy.
“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often
referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here. With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”
An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster, which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight part-time travel consultants.
“Tourism represents a sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth. Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry. All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

A graduate of Garden Spot High School, Jimmy Faus passed away on April 19, 2012, following a six-month fight with colon cancer. He was 27.
“The vibes of the day are amazingly kind, soft, caring, helpful, understanding and fun,” said Crawford. “It’s a special feel that is only explained by ‘hometown vibes.’ Seeing people come together is very heartwarming to watch unfold.”

The origins of Churchtown Day can be traced to the 1970s. For its part, the Caernarvon Historical Society is hoping to make nearly $2,000 from its yard sale, funds that will be used to maintain its building and pay for utilities.
“(Churchtown Day) hasn’t really changed a lot,” said Styer. “We’re there to help people find things. If they want to come in and talk history, we love to do that.”

The West Earl Township Police Department’s upcoming National Night Out will serve as a reminder of the role that law enforcement plays in the community. The local version of a national program designed to build trust between police forces and residents will be conducted from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Broad Street Park, 801 Broad St., Akron. The event is free, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
The West Earl Township Police Department serves and protects West Earl Township, Akron Borough, East Earl Township and New Holland.
“National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement and provides a great opportunity to bring everyone together under positive circumstances with the goal of keeping our communities safe,” said West Earl Township police chief Eric Higgins. “We look forward to the opportunity to engage with the community and getting to know each other.”
National Night Out is also a lot of fun. The event will offer delightful dishes from 11 food trucks, free snacks, a hydration station, pony rides, balloon art, games, prizes, a candy scramble and a car show. Also featured will be police K-9 demonstrations, a department patrol car, fire apparatus, and first responder and EMS demonstrations, all of which are designed to be informational, educational and entertaining.
About 2,500 guests are expected to attend. The West Earl Township Police Department has been planning the specifics and details of National Night Out since April.
“I enjoy seeing the community come out to support their police agency,” said Blessing. “You see all types of people. Seeing them have fun with their children is my favorite part.”
The West Earl Township Police Department hosted its initial National Night Out event in 2020. The law-enforcement agency also conducts other community events, like “Coffee With a Cop” and “Popsicle With a Cop.”
