IU13 Announces STEM Educators Of The Year
Backpack Giveaway Switches Gears CrossNet Makes Changes To Annual Event By Ann Mead Ash
Knowing that this year’s CrossNet Ministries Student Backpack Giveaway would need to change to conform to COVID-19 restrictions, Lisa Kerstetter, CrossNet Ministries director of marketing and events, went online to see how other organizations were handling similar outreaches. “I researched big cities that do backpack giveaways, she said, noting that some organizations canceled, where others held drive-up events where a child’s chance to choose a pack was eliminated. “I want (area participants)
to have options, she said. “If we can let them in the building, they can choose. In addition to children having a chance to choose their backpacks, the hours of the event have been extended. This year’s backpack giveaway will be held at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, on Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Families are asked to register by the end of the day Monday, Aug. 10, for one of more than 800 available time slots. Online registration is available at https://signup.com/go/UeccQjr. Those without internet access may register by calling 717-355-2454.

In 2019, CrossNet volunteers and donors helped provide backpacks and school supplies to 585 New Holland-area students. This year’s event, set for Aug. 11, will include several safety precautions, such as registering for a time slot, limiting the number of people in the building, social distancing, and requiring masks for those age 3 and up.
Encouraging Creativity Jill Hertzog, artistic director of dance with Cavod Academy of the Arts, is excited about the theme for this year’s Camp Create, a summer camp experience specifically designed for teenagers and adults, those age 13 and up, with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
When the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 announced the winners of this year’s STEM Educators of the Year award in early June, Manheim Central and ELANCO school district teachers were honored for their work implementing STEM curricula that is innovative and inquiry-based, integrates real-world applications, and utilizes assignments that include students from a variety of backgrounds and at different levels. Amy Carter, elementary STEM coach at Doe Run Elementary School in the Manheim Central School District (MCSD), was named elementary STEM Teacher of the Year, and Joseph Steinmacher, who teaches at Garden Spot See IU13 pg 7

“We are doing ‘Create With Purpose - What’s your purpose?’ said Hertzog, who noted that Cavod’s tagline is “Create With Purpose. “Each camper will have the chance to explore different passions and creative outlets, and we will touch on identity, how much they are loved and how much they are worth. This is the second year that Cavod, which is located at 665 W. Main St., New Holland, will hold Camp Create. This year’s camp will be held at Cavod from 4 to 6:30 p.m. starting on Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 7. On Aug. 7, at 6 p.m., a showcase performance will be held for family and friends of campers in Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland. A display of artwork created during camp will be held at the See Cavod pg 6

The Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which supports the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is an institution in the state. Held yearly at the Pennsylvania Farm Show building in Harrisburg, the event has been known to feature close to 400 handcrafted quilts, wall hangings, and comforters, along with opportunities to shop for handmade items and gifts and to bid on unique items during the Country Auction, Silent Auction, and Children’s Auction. The event is also known for homemade food and family-friendly activities. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the auction was canceled. Steven Stoltzfus of Leola, who has long been involved with the relief sale, along with a group of volunteers wanted to help make up for some of the funds lost due to the cancellation. “We’re holding just the coin auction, reported Stoltzfus. A variety of donated coins have been gathered to be sold at an auction that will be both live and online at the same time. The live auction will be held at the
Bareville Fire Hall, 211 E. Main St., Leola, on Friday, Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. At the same time, the auction will be held online through https://hibid.com. The auction preview will be held beginning at 4 p.m. See Coin Auction pg 2
