UPCOMING RACE
The Ox Trot 5-Miler will kick off Bowmansville Days on Saturday, Aug. 11, at Bowmansville Park, 155 Church St., Narvon. Registration will open at 7 a.m. The race will step off at 8 a.m. To register, visit www.active.com and search for “Ox Trot 5 Miler� in Narvon. Proceeds will benefit Octorara High School cross-country and track and field.
BREAKFAST AND YARD SALES
Churchtown Day will take place on Saturday, Aug 4. The event will begin at 6 a.m. with breakfast at the Caernarvon Fire Company, 2145 Main St. The meal will include pancakes, sausage, fruit, orange juice and coffee. Breakfast will be served until 10 a.m. A flea market will be held at 7 a.m. at the Caernarvon Historical Society, 2148 Main St. Yard sales will take place throughout Churchtown. The Terre Hill Days Committee has planned events to take place at Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill. On Friday, Aug. 3, Lunch in the Park will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Additional Lunch in the Park dates will be Fridays, Aug. 10, 17, 24, and 31. The main pavilion will be open offering a variety of lunch options for purchase. On Saturday, Aug. 4, the committee will host Movie Night at the Park beginning at 8 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase at the main pavilion. School Supply Drive To Aid Local Students By Ann Mead Ash
CrossNet office manager Lisa Kerstetter is hoping to fill some backpacks for students in kindergarten through 12th grade who attend ELANCO School District schools. CrossNet Ministries, 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, will be accepting backpacks, pens, glue sticks, markers, folders, rulers, notebook paper, three-ring binders, drawstring gym bags, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and more at the resource center through Thursday, Aug. 9. According to Kerstetter, there is a special need for backpacks and supplies for older elementary, middle, and high school students. “We (receive) a lot of crayons, but we need items for high school students too,� noted Kerstetter, who mentioned that highlighters and spiral-bound tablets are among the
greatest needs for older students. Quality used backpacks in like-new condition will also be accepted. On Tuesday, Aug. 14, CrossNet will hold a student backpack giveaway at the CrossNet Youth Center, 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition to giving away backpacks, the ministry has lined up a number of services to help students prepare for the fall semester. Free eye screenings will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, and a mobile dental clinic will be on-site for the entirety of the event. Free haircuts will be offered by a number of area stylists and barbers who have donated their time. Bagged lunches and snacks will be given away while supplies last. Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West never wants to see a girl miss out on taking part in the program because of a lack of funds. “The worst thing we can hear is that a girl didn’t participate because it costs too much money,� said West. “We want to make the program accessible to every girl regardless of financial limitations.� The GOTR endowment, created in honor of Ellen McCabe, West’s stepmother, and administered by the Lancaster Community Foundation, will work to make sure that never happens. “The money GOTR will (receive) from the endowment will go directly to See GOTR Endowment pg 3

Big Boy Brass, a traditional New Orleans brass band, will take the stage on Saturday, July 28. On Sunday, July 29, the Servant Stage production of “I’ll Fly Away� will be presented. On Wednesday, Aug. 1, Dan and Terry will play a variety of music. All concerts will begin at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
