Small-Town Ambulance Offers Advanced Services

“We want to provide the best care we can to our communities,” said Darrell Fisher, emergency medical services (EMS) chief with New Holland EMS. “That’s the envelope we wanted to push, and we feel we can push that further.” That metaphoric envelope was pushed a bit further this spring when New Holland EMS, 101 E. Franklin St., New Holland, added Advanced Life

Support (ALS) services at both New Holland and Leola stations on March 1 and blood services on May 19.

Until six years ago, the organization provided Basic Life Support. “In 2019, we upgraded to Intermediate Life Support (ILS), which is a stepping stone,” said Fisher. The move to ALS required the presence of paramedics - who joined the force as of Jan. 1; it also required training and a separate vehicle from an outside health system.

“We get to control the level of care the medics provide,” he said. Using grant funds, the New Holland EMS purchased the ALS squad vehicles and the additional heart monitors, ventilators, and IV medication pumps. “Some of that (equipment) is more advanced than we have had,” said Fisher, who noted that one paramedic and an ALS car are present at each station at all times. “They back each other up, so if there’s a severe call in either territory, you could have

Remembering the People of Weaver Poultry

Larry Shirk, organizer of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) event to highlight the history of the Victor F. Weaver Poultry Company, is quick to give credit where it is due. “Ida (Gall) came up with the title,” shared Shirk, referring to the name of the presentation, which is “The People and History of Weaver Poultry.” Shirk credited Larry Brown, who had been vice president of human resources with Weaver, with suggesting a focus on the people who had worked at the plant. To create the two-night event, Shirk has pulled together a number of former Weaver (now Tyson Foods) employees to make up a panel and discuss their experiences working at Weaver.

The panel discussions will be held at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The first presentation will be held on Thursday, July 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Speakers that first evening will include Allen Tate, who was director of marketing services/ corporate communications with Weaver; Brown; and Dennis Sharp, who was Weaver’s Main Street store manager. The second event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mike Good, Weaver production manager and Tyson complex manager; Shirk, who was district manager of product lines; and Tate will speak at that event. Shirk also plans to have a number of former employees, including Don Welk, Dale L. Weaver, Joe DePippo, Al Kunkle, and Steve Schnader seated near

The library will also offer Preschool Storytime, for children ages 4 to 6, on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Toddler Thursdays, for children from birth to age 3, on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. The August theme will be “Transportation.” Siblings are welcome to join.

Lancaster County Parks and Recreation will also present “Glitter Critters” on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. Attendees will learn about animals that shimmer and sparkle while looking at pictures and preserved specimens. They may paint a beetle picture using natural mica glitter. The program is designed for children ages 6 to 10, but all are welcome.

According to Shirk, the idea of holding the presentation was born of a few other events - one focused on the history of Blue Ball - that were held in the new Steve Loewen Community Room at the NHAHS Museum on Main Street. Gall shared that a number of attendees spoke up about their own experiences in Blue Ball and that the event was recorded. “Part of the reason to do this is that there are a ton of people who have memories (to share),” explained Shirk.

residents work at Weaver, but Weaver practices were, according to Shirk, ahead of their time. “Weaver was important to the growth of the community,” said Shirk, who added that Weaver’s Christian beliefs and the way business was done at the company helped forge a connection with a growing Hispanic population in New Holland and also helped Weaver products to become a strong regional brand.

The library’s Summer Reading Program is open to people of all ages and will run through Saturday, Aug. 16. Reading logs may be picked up at the library, and the theme of this year’s program is “Color Our World.”

Organizers soon realized that the Weaver Poultry presentation would outgrow the community room and a single gathering. “At one point, Weaver was the third-largest employer in Lancaster County,” noted Shirk, who said he thought the organization employed more than 1,000 people at one point. Not only did large numbers of area

The multimedia presentation will include photos of both people and Weaver products, and each presenter will cover a specific topic, with Tate focusing on the early history; Brown discussing the people and culture; and Sharp, founder of Sharp Shopper stores, talking about the different foods at the July 31 event. On Aug. 7, Good will talk about product evolution. “There are few people in the country who know more about processing chickens than Mike does,” stated Shirk. Shirk will discuss product lines on Aug. 7, and Tate will talk about the avian influenza (AI) epidemic of 1982 and 1983. “AI cost the poultry industry $69 million in lost revenue,” said Shirk. “It disrupted production.” The event will conclude with a discussion of ownership transition from Weaver to Holly Farms and then to Tyson.

A display dedicated to Weaver Poultry may be seen at the NHAHS Museum, located at 207 E. Main St., New Holland. The museum is open each Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no admission fee. Information about NHAHS is also available at https://nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook or @ nhhistorical on Instagram.

New Holland EMS from

two paramedics for a really critical call.” According to Fisher, one benefit of the arrangement is having the paramedics available to train volunteers on a regular basis. “This allows us to have our internal medics walk with our volunteer providers,” he stated. “Our paramedics make our volunteers better,” added Fisher, who noted that the volunteers just “soak up” what they learn from the paramedics. “When (a team) comes back from a call, they debrief and talk about what went well or didn’t go well, so now they have that feedback.”

The ability to offer blood products to area residents in need is a significant upgrade in service, according to Fisher. “(This service) is brand new, and it’s a pretty big deal,” he stated, adding that New Holland is the first in the county and in the Emergency Health Services Federation, which encompasses several counties in south central Pennsylvania, to offer this service. Having blood products available on an emergency basis is especially important when a patient is hemorrhaging or going into shock. “We have the blood

pg 1

product before going to the emergency department,” said Fisher. “If we are able to get that blood product into (a patient) before they get to the emergency room, that chance of survival skyrockets.”

Keeping blood products available requires special equipment. “We had to buy blood coolers approved by the blood bank and the transfusion equipment,” stated Fisher, who noted that blood supplies are returned to the blood bank every 48 hours. “It’s super high maintenance because blood is scarce,” noted Fisher. “We follow a zero waste policy, so if we don’t use it, it goes back to be used.” According to Fisher, only about 2% of ground transport EMS agencies provide prehospital blood transfusions. “We are the sixth 911-dispatched ALS agency in the state to have blood products for emergency 911 calls,” Fisher stated. He added that every minute of delay in administering prehospital blood to a trauma patient increases mortality by 11%.

Fisher stated that New Holland partners with Penn Medicine and that the assigned medical director is

Dr. Brendan Mulcahy. “His passion is about increasing the quality of care in EMS,” shared Fisher. “He helps us push the envelope.” According to Fisher, Mulcahy puts in many hours training with the New Holland team.

“Being able to provide that quality is something we’re super excited about for little New Holland,” Fisher said, adding that a lot of the equipment the organization utilizes exceeds state standards. “We are trying to do big EMS in a little town.” Fisher emphasized that New Holland EMS has no intention of growing bigger, only better. “Our goal is to provide our community the best care we possibly can,” he added, noting that both volunteers and paramedics share that passion for improvement.

New Holland EMS is celebrating its 80th anniversary. The organization was founded by the New Holland Lions Club, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. “Case New Holland, which was Sperry at the time, bought the first ambulance,” noted Fisher. RTCM Begins Capital Campaign for New Building

Contributions to the Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) building capital campaign and peer-to-peer fundraising program are more than donations.

They are investments in the lives of men who have experienced trauma but have dedicated their lives to becoming productive citizens with the nonprofit group’s help.

RTCM, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, purchased a building in Ronks for $1.35 million on June 20 and moved there from its home in East Lampeter Township it had been leasing since 2015.

RTCM accepted a loan for $1.25 million from local businesspeople John and Joyce Wagner, who agreed to terms beneficial to the organization. There is no interest for the first year and 5% interest for the second and third years of the loan. “The faster we can pay knock off the principal in the first year, we could save literally hundreds of thousands of dollars

Award-Winning Publications

Our community papers (Merchandiser, Advertiser, Pennysaver and Community Courier) had a strong showing at the Best of the Best Association of Community Publishers (ACP) 2024 awards competition. ACP represents community publications from coast to coast, reaching millions of homes on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

A few of our 2024 awards include the following:

in interest,” said RTCM’s founder and executive director, Jaime Santiago.

The bigger building will enable RTCM to assist more people. The East Lampeter group home accommodated 12 clients and up to six staff members. The Ronks residence holds up to 20 clients.

“It’s surrounded by farmland and woods,” said Jaime’s wife, Pam, who is RTCM’s office manager, bookkeeper, and events director. “There are donkeys and goats.”

“It’s very therapeutic,” Jaime added.

Men in the program pay a monthly rate determined by RTCM’s board of directors. The cost includes an evening meal, internet, electric, and trash disposal. RTCM provides therapy, vocational training, and life-skills training such as having a bank account. Scholarships are available for qualifying clients.

There are numerous heartwarming success stories. One RTCM graduate works for a construction company, got married, and recently became a father. Another program graduate, who had battled a drug addiction, is now a college graduate and RTCM administrative assistant.

“The money people give is going to keep on giving,” Jaime said. “For example, people supported a program when I was a student back in 1991. The money that they gave to supporting channels helped me

change my life. Here it is, 2025, and they’re still getting a return on it, from my

own life and then from the people that I’m investing in myself.”

People can donate by going to https://restart ministry.org, calling Pam at 717-304-3291, or texting RTCMCC to 41444.

RTCM will also hold a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign from Friday, Aug. 1, to Saturday, Aug. 16. The goal is to generate $100,000 for four projects: the building capital campaign, the care and discipleship fund, the client scholarship fund, and the vehicle fund.

The care and discipleship fund provides biblical counseling and life-skills support. Scholarships assist men who cannot afford the intake fee, and the vehicle fund will help ensure reliable transportation to church, jobs, and appointments.

State Warns Residents of Fake Inheritance Scam

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID), Pennsylvania Department of Aging, Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities (DoBS), and Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), along with the Office of Attorney General, warn Pennsylvanians to stay vigilant after a scam was reported involving someone posing as a commonwealth employee. The reported scam used a fake email resembling an official commonwealth email address to target older Pennsylvanians and request money through licensed financial institutions to receive a fake inheritance.

People who receive suspicious emails or texts or messages about earning money or an inheritance from a stranger should not respond or feel pressured to act quickly. People should also check email addresses, watch out for fake websites, and be aware that Pennsylvania agencies will not threaten

immediate action without proper notice.

Anyone who is contacted in a suspicious manner should not provide any personal or financial information or send money and should report the incident to PID or DoBS at 866-PA Complaint or www .pa.gov/consume. Anyone who feels they have been scammed may file a complaint with the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection at www.attorneygeneral.gov or by calling 800-441-2555.

Governor Josh Shapiro has directed his administration and state agencies to use all available resources to protect Pennsylvanians and fight scams and fraud. State departments are working with law enforcement to track and stop these fraudulent activities. Pennsylvanians are encouraged to help spread the word to prevent others from becoming victims.

Stevens & Smith Center Joins Historic Network

LancasterHistory has announced that the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy was accepted into the National Park Service’s Reconstruction Era National Historic Network on June 4. The national network connects organizations and sites throughout the United States that provide education, interpretation, and research related to the Reconstruction Era (18611900) in American history.

The Reconstruction Era was a period of significant transformation in American history that impacted social, political, and economic systems within the country as the United States grappled with the aftermath of the Civil War, especially the legacy of slavery. The Reconstruction Era National Historic Network was signed into law on March 12, 2019, and has added more than 100 sites and programs to its network.

The Stevens & Smith Center is managed by LancasterHistory and is tentatively set to open in spring 2026. The center is already a part of the National Park Service’s Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
