LCCTF Invests in Students’ Futures

Some would have you believe that money makes the world go ’round. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation (LCCTF) is of the opinion that young people need money - or scholarships and grants - to make money.
“Scholarships and workforce grants are investments in students’ futures,” said Jennifer Baker, who’s been the executive director of LCCTF for seven years. “They help students complete their education, enter the workforce with valuable skills and credentials, and pursue careers that offer long-term stability, growth and opportunity. Scholarships and workforce grants help remove financial barriers so students can access education, training, equipment and certifications needed to prepare for successful careers in high-demand fields.”
Recently, LCCTF distributed a total of $87,000 - $46,500 in workplace grants and $40,500 in scholarships - to nearly 70 adult students and recently graduated high school students from almost every public school district in Lancaster County. The $87,000 total represented the most that LCCTF has ever awarded in its 23 years of blessing students.
Scholarships are applied to costs related to continuing education. Workforce grants are used for uniforms, tools and testing fees for individuals beginning careers.

A small family-owned enterprise, Weaver’s Toasted Grains, which is located at 220 White Oak Road, New Holland, is celebrating 35 years of doing business in the agricultural-rich eastern Lancaster County area.
“We believe grain is more than just a product
- it’s a partnership,” said Weaver. “We are relationship-driven in everything we do. Whether you’re walking into our office, unloading at one of our pits or receiving a delivery on your farm, you are our most important asset. Our commitment to building lasting relationships with our customers is what drives us to produce the highest quality grain possible.”
Weaver’s Toasted Grains employs 16 workers, seven of whom are related to the Weavers. Those employees serve the company in the office and as truck drivers, grain processors, pit and loadout operators, fleet supervisors and maintenance supervisors.
“Together, these team members help ensure the smooth processing, production and delivery of high-quality processed grain products to our customers,” said Weaver, a resident of East Earl Township. “As our company continues to grow, we remain committed to investing in our people. Our team members come from the local communities we serve and bring a wide range of skills, experiences and perspectives to the workplace. We believe our employees are one of our greatest strengths, and, whenever possible, we look within our team for opportunities to promote and develop talent.”
A Classic Rivalry

Cowboys and Eagles, a classic rivalry. But this game doesn’t take place in Philadelphia or Dallas, Texas. It hails from the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church.
The Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League, a Lancaster-based nonprofit that offers a competitive avenue for individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is set to kick off its sixth season in July.
The league offers two teams, the Cowboys and the Eagles. The two teams will play a 10-game season that will begin on Saturday, July 25, and run through Saturday, Oct. 17. All games will be played on Saturdays, and most will be played at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Select games (Aug. 22 and 29) will be played at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.
“It’s like sandlot football,”
said league founder Randy Samuels. “We show up and we play. There’s always shenanigans going on, a lot of fun and sneaky stuff being done. ... They come out, they have fun and get to exercise.”
Naturally, most of the league’s participants are fans of the Eagles. Samuels, who coaches the Cowboys, is a diehard Dallas fandrawing the ire of many of his players.
The league’s cheerleaders are referred to as “Lancaster’s Sweethearts,” a registered trademark owned by Samuels. The term references the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, who are known as “America’s Sweethearts.”
“I get booed so much, and I egg them on,” Samuels said. “The cheerleaders will play that ‘Fly Eagles Fly’ song a couple times a game. As the president of the league this year, I issued an executive order banning that, but they will ignore me.”

The Weavers were dairy farmers before starting Weaver’s Toasted Grains. Because of the risk/ reward factor ingrained in entrepreneurship, there was a leap of faith element associated with the venture.
“In the first years, it was a real leap of faith, but (there was) much prayer and seeking God’s will, and also consulting other local successful business owners for advice before we moved ahead,” said Weaver. “We started servicing one or two mills and currently serve over 30 mills and several hundred farmers monthly. We went from our first venture of just soybeans to processing corn in 1990. We added barley to our processing in 2020.”
Family Music Group to Perform
The Hagans Family will perform on Saturday, July 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Fivepointville Bible Conference. The program will be held rain or shine in the enclosed tabernacle, located at 528 Chapel Lane, Denver. A freewill offering will be received, and food will be available.
The members of the Hagans Family, based in Kinzers, have been singing
together since 1991. Delivering the sound of a traditional gospel quartet, the group has recorded albums in Pennsylvania and in Nashville, Tenn.

Art Association Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Even after 90 years, the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) is as strong as ever.
The LCAA, the oldest art association in Lancaster County, celebrated its 90th birthday at its annual banquet at the DoubleTree Resort in Lancaster in May. The banquet’s keynote speaker was artist Richard Ressel,
who shared many of his memories from over the years. He also honored Ken Hoak, an LCAA member since 1950, for his longtime service.
“(Richard) gave a wonderful view, just the little tidbits that he knew from the art association, things and memories that would be meaningful to members,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, a 40-year LCAA member who handles the association’s publicity and advertising.
Formed in 1936 by Mary Black Diller and Grace Steinmetz, the LCAA began house tours around the county in 1949, with proceeds earmarked for a permanent location. That would come in 1954, when the association moved into 22 E. Vine St., Lancaster, a building
that once belonged to the plumbers’ union.
The Vine Street location would serve as the association’s home for more than 30 years until 1998, when it moved to its present location of 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg.
That building consists of multiple galleries, a board room, a classroom and a pottery room.
Today, the LCAA rosters 245 members who come from all over the area, not just Lancaster County. Within those members are professional artists who make a living off their craft, as well as amateurs who are just getting into art.

through sponsorships from local businesses. About 30 individuals took part in the league last year. Samuels had hoped to have four teams this season but decided to stick with only the Cowboys and Eagles.
Samuels obtained nonprofit status for the league in December. After the last game of the season, there will be a celebratory awards banquet.
The league is still searching for sponsorships, as well as volunteers. Volunteers assist with every aspect of the game, including serving as a “buddy” for the more challenged playing members of the league.
“The buddy will catch the ball for them, hand it to them and guide them towards the end zone,” Samuels said.
The league is named after Chuckie Magee, a Lititz resident who passed away in 2015 after a fight with undifferentiated pleomorphic bone sarcoma. Magee, a 2013 graduate of Warwick High School, was heavily involved with challenger baseball and football.
The league’s logo is modeled after Magee and uses the color red, which was his favorite color.
“Doctors (said) he wasn’t going to live to be a year old,” Samuels said of Magee. “If you knew Chuckie, you loved Chuckie. Everybody loved Chuckie.”

The Dolphins practice and host home swim meets at the New Holland Community Pool, which is located at 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, and owned and operated by the borough. A member of the Lancaster Summer Swim League, the Dolphins compete in about seven meets a year during a summer season that begins in the middle of May and concludes at the end of July.
On Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, the Dolphins will host the annual Lancaster Summer Swim League championships at New Holland Community Pool.
“These swimmers are learning perseverance,” said Wanner. “You don’t just jump in and get a top time. It takes hard work. We encourage them. It teaches the kids not to give up and to keep going. We also emphasize getting along as a team. We’re all working on our own times, and we’re all on the same team.
“We’re teaching personal goals, and it’s hard to attain
these goals,” added Wanner. “It’s a team of all abilities. Most of our swimmers return year after year; they enjoy being part of a team. It really teaches them a lot of life lessons.”
Currently, there are nearly 110 kids between the ages of 5 and 18 involved with the competitive New Holland summer swim program. Those students reside in the eastern Lancaster County, Conestoga Valley, Pequea Valley, Ephrata, Adamstown and Elizabethtown areas.
Overseen by a board of parents, the Dolphins are led by head coach Connor Ludwig and assistant coaches Bryna Kelly, Erin Cromwell and Bria Burkholder in the pool.
“These are kids who have all kinds of backgrounds - acting, field hockey, basketball,” said Wanner. “They are normal everyday American kids who are here to enjoy swimming and the coaching. They make new friends. There’s no pressure to be something you’re not. The kids love it.
“In swimming, it’s easy to learn the strokes,” Wanner continued. “But to improve, it almost takes constant practice and training. It
takes a lot of diligence to become good at the sport. If you keep up with it, you can keep up with it, and the more you do it, the more the love of the sport grows. You basically improve as much as you want to improve. That can be very motivating for a lot of kids. Swimming can be a lifelong activity.”
At the beginning of each season, the Dolphins host an introductory ice cream social. They have also participated in food drives and constructed a float for the New Holland holiday parade.
But what makes the Dolphins a true community team is the support they receive from more than 14 local sponsors.
“We raise money through local sponsorships,” said Wanner. “Without community support, we don’t have a community swim team. It makes for a very successful team.”
The New Holland summer swim program was founded in 1985.
“The summer swim team is a really nice program to be involved with,” said Wanner. “It’s a really nice opportunity for kids to be kids in a structured environment.
“Our growth depends on our swim team members,” concluded Wanner. “We’re always looking for more swim team members. We try to keep our team going with a lot of swimmers.”

A majority of LCCTF’s workplace grants and scholarships are funded through the organization’s Fly on the Run fundraiser, which features a banquet and a fly-fishing tournament at Millport Conservancy in Warwick Township. Other awards are funded through private donors.
This year, LCCTF raised more than $140,000 in support of students and education programs.
“These scholarships and workforce grants have a transformative impact on students’ lives,” said Baker.
“These awards not only help students overcome financial barriers but also
empower them to pursue rewarding careers and achieve their full potential. As Lancaster County continues to face a growing demand for skilled workers, these students represent the next generation of talent entering critical industries and strengthening our local workforce pipeline.
“It’s the generosity of the donors whose investments make these opportunities possible,” continued Baker.
“Through scholarships and workforce grants, the foundation fulfills its mission of supporting career and technical education that will benefit Lancaster County for years to come.”
Since its inception in 2003, LCCTF has raised over $7 million toward its mission of supporting the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), which operates four campuses in the county. There were 1,784
adult students enrolled in LCCTC programs during the 2025-26 school year, and LCCTC’s high school enrollment for 2026-27 is expected to exceed 1,650 students from every public school district in Lancaster County.
“Beyond these scholarships and grants, the LCCTF supports the LCCTC by awarding teacher innovation grants for new
program equipment, supporting student assistance programs and providing for the workforce talent initiative - a program that recruits, educates and places adult students into high demand, skilled advanced manufacturing and transportation jobs like CDL and welding,” said Baker.

United Way Awards Scholarships
United Way of Lancaster County recently awarded more than $102,875 in Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Pre-K Scholarships. The scholarships are intended to help children and families across Lancaster County.
Through Pennsylvania’s EITC program, eligible businesses receive tax credits for contributions made to qualified organizations like United Way of Lancaster County. The
contributions to United Way are then transformed into scholarships for families experiencing financial hardship, helping children to access early learning programs. By increasing access to these opportunities, United Way hopes to strengthen both family stability and long-term community well-being.

It’s a real nice venue for them to be able to exhibit their work, and then it just encourages them to paint more and to do more things.”
The anniversary is also a time of change for the association. At the banquet, president Carol Dale stepped down from her position. She was the lon -
gest serving president in LCAA history, guiding it through a period of uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dale introduced new president Amelia Abrams at the banquet.
“She’s done a wonderful job,” Keller said of Dale. “We’re very pleased that we have someone that’s very qualified to take over her place. It’s a big responsibility.”
Throughout the year, the LCAA offers classes in drawing, watercolor, pottery, jewelry making, sketching and pastels. The classes, geared toward

Senior Socials Announced
Friendship Church, 120 W. Main St., New Holland, will begin a new Senior Socials program, which will kick off with an ice cream social on Tuesday, July 21. Starting in August, socials will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. The August dates will be Aug. 11 and 25.
Seniors age 60 and up may attend for social time,
games, puzzles, and more. At the first gathering, attendees may fill out a questionnaire to share what activities they would be interested in.
Seniors who need assistance must be accompanied by a responsible adult the entire time. The facility is handicapped-accessible. The program is an outreach of the church; it is not a senior center.
