Liz Esbenshade Walks Away From Successful Driving Career

There are many similarities and differences between bus driving and driving a regular vehicle.
Liz Esbenshade knows some things about driving a bus. She’s sort of an expert.
“When you’re driving a bus, you have to think about your turns,” said Esbenshade. “You have to be careful that you don’t sideswipe anyone. I feel safer in my bus than I do in a car because you’re sitting higher up and you have all those mirrors. When I started, I wasn’t worried about driving, I was worried about what the kids were doing. You can’t see everything, but you can see quite a bit.”
Esbenshade recently retired from a 46-year career as a bus driver in the Eastern Lancaster County (ELANCO) School District. It was quite a run, complete with deferential relationships, dependability and safety.
“I just felt it was long enough and I wanted to do other things,” said Esbenshade, a 76-year-old resident of New Holland. “For the most part, I really enjoyed the kids, and I really enjoyed driving

Friendship Celebrates America in Church

Friendship Church: A United Methodist Congregation makes a point to celebrate many of the morals and standards upon which this country was founded. Some of those principles and ideals are similar to the ones promoted by the church. “The goal was to honor and celebrate the Founding Fathers and other historical characters who had an impact on our nation’s 250 years,”
said Anita Focht, the organist and traditional music leader at Friendship Church. “The program was a worship experience and incorporated patriotic hymns, prayers, a litany, messages from the past, patriotic anthems and the reading of the Declaration of Independence.”

Fostering Petsa Chance to Be Part of the Journey

Anne Hendricks, outreach coordinator with All 4 Paws Rescue, a nonprofit, fosterbased, all-breed organization located in Malvern, is familiar with the most common excuse potential pet foster parents give. “They all say, ‘I could never foster because I would want to adopt them all,’” noted Hendricks, who has fostered more than 100 dogs over nine years. “We have all foster-failed at least once,” she added, referring to a foster dog she knew she would be keeping within the first 24 hours of fostering her.
According to Kisha Reinmiller, site director for Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center, many who foster do become adoptive pet parents. “We are always recruiting new fosters,” she shared. “A lot of them adopt for the first time.”
Both organizations reported that becoming a foster parent for an animal is not complicated. The Lancaster Center application can be found online at www.pspca .org, and the All 4 Paws application is at www.all4pawsrescue .com. Representatives of both organizations noted that the foster application is similar to the adoption application. “We process (the applications), and then we reach out,” said Reinmiller. Hendricks pointed out that for potential fosters who already have pets, contacting the applicant’s vet is a crucial step. “We talk to the vet to be sure (the applicant’s) pets have been well taken care of,” she stated.

Once an applicant is approved, the organization will want to learn the type of animal the foster parent would like to take in. “A lot of folks have preferences, whether it’s a large or small dog, a cat, or kittens,” stated Reinmiller. Other questions may reference lifestyle and family size, such as whether the home is high traffic.
At All 4 Paws, foster coordinator Melissa Kuchinski will contact the approved applicant to discuss the age and size of a possible foster dog and to learn whether small children or cats are present in the home. “We try to place (animals that) we think would work in that home,” explained Hendricks. Special attention is given to place animals with medical issues with more experienced foster caregivers, since these animals usually remain in foster care longer than the typical stay, which can range from a day or two to several months.
Meeting the animal that will be fostered is treated much like an adoption meeting at the Lancaster Center. If the meeting goes well, the foster care provider will receive crates, toys, food, and treats, and any necessary medical care will be covered.
“The fosters are not out-of-pocket for anything (at All 4 Paws),” explained Hendricks. “We give them the white glove treatment,” she added, noting that the organization depends on donations to make that possible. Fosters also receive a list of rules that include instructions such as keeping a leash on the dog at all times. “Rescue dogs are a huge flight risk,” noted Hendricks. “It’s easier and safer to grab a leash than a dog.”
Training for dogs and foster parents can also be part of the mix. “We have training partners who work with us,” shared Hendricks, who recalled a dog she fostered who did not like to meet new people. “A training partner met with us for an hour and gave me hints, and (that dog is) now in a wonderful home,” she shared.
At the Lancaster Center, foster parents are given direct access to SPCA staff members even after hours. “We can counsel, provide
handouts, or talk on the phone about what to do with certain behaviors,” explained Reinmiller, who reaches out to fosters weekly to see how things are going.
According to Reinmiller, foster parents are a great source of information about the pet and provide photos and videos that help in the adoption process. “We are a municipal shelter contracted with local police to take strays,” explained Reinmiller, who noted that each dog is assessed at the
center. “Foster homes are really helpful for us to get home knowledge for the dogs in our care … especially with dogs that are a little shy or have behavioral concerns or need medical care.”
Hendricks agreed, noting, “We can make a good match (for an adoptive home) using the information about the (pet provided by foster parents).”

The program, which was inspired by America’s 250th birthday and was directed by Focht, was presented recently at Friendship Church: A United Methodist Congregation, 120 W. Main St., New Holland.
“The best part of the program was the audience meeting historical characters dressed in costume who talked about their lives and the impact they had on this nation,” said Focht. “They included John Adams, Ben Franklin, Teddy Rossevelt, Clara Barton, Nellie Bly and Betsy Ross. There were other surprises. It might be a thrill for some people to hear the words that Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence while being read by these historical figures.”
Friendship Church’s patriotic program lasted about an hour. Following the event’s conclusion, refreshments were served in the church’s fellowship hall, where audience members were afforded an opportunity to interact

with some of the historical characters.
“The audience participated in the responsive reading and the singing of ‘America the Beautiful,’ ‘My Country ’Tis of Thee,’ ‘God Bless America’ and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’” said Focht.
A few years ago, Friendship Church: A United Methodist Congregation resulted from the merging of Evangelical United Methodist Church and New Holland United Methodist Church. Since then, the church has formed a Nurture, Outreach and Witness (NOW) program.
“Friendship Church does play an important role in the New Holland community,” said Focht. “We host weekly meetings for various organizations including Al-Anon, Geri-fit (and) the Boy Scouts, and Friendship Church-affiliated activities (like) crafting, crocheting/ knitting group, Bible study, prayer meetings and a monthly family game night. Gospel Quartet to Perform
The Singing Servants Quartet will present an evening of gospel music at Fairmount in Ephrata on Tuesday, July 14, at 6:30 p.m. The outdoor concert will be held on the Wheat Ridge campus, located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive
on the west side of Fairmount’s grounds.
The quartet is composed of four friends brought together by a shared love of singing. The group has performed for many audiences throughout the region and has recorded two CDs. The group, which holds its annual car show on the first Saturday of July every year, will present this year’s show on Saturday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. No registration is needed for the 26th annual show. Anyone wishing to participate can bring their cars, trucks and motorcycles. There is a fee to take part; the event will be held rain or shine. More than 20 trophies will be awarded, and the first 200 participants will receive a dash plaque.
Because of the event’s schedule, this year will not be the first time that it has been held over the holiday. Club member Judy Andrews said that she does not expect to lose attendees with the holiday weekend.

One big advantage that the Cruisers have over other summer car shows is the pavilion at the fire company.
“I’ve been to lots of car shows, and Judy has too,” said club member Christine Weir, who noted that club members can also gives attendees rides from the parking area to the center of the field. “When it’s July or August, it’s hotter than blazes. You get your food and you’re in the sun;
it’s hot. We actually have a pavilion in the shade, which is really nice.”
Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a community of motorcycle riders who support military causes, will have a stand.

“We’ve always lucked out pretty good with the weather,” Andrews said.
“That’s why we started doing it rain or shine, because it’s too confusing for the food vendors to come when they have stuff the next day, then they can’t come.”
The club has been in existence since 1994. It meets on the second Sunday of every month at 6 p.m. at Willow Street UCC, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. Everyone is welcome to attend, even if they do not own a classic or antique car.
“We just like the people that are in it,” Andrews said. Weir added that the club is looking for new members to come to the show and to bring their significant other.
The club’s other major events include an annual Christmas party; outings to local restaurants; and trips to the Morgantown Auto Mall, located right on the border between Lancaster, Chester and Berks counties.

The Elizabethtown Fair is seeking candidates for its fair queen competition, which will be held on Monday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. on the Kiwanis

To run for fair queen, additional qualifications include residence in Lancaster, Lebanon or Dauphin counties; parental or guardian consent; and no previous history of serving as a local fair queen or former state contestant.
“These requirements ensure fairness, consistency and eligibility for the statewide competition,” said Alyssa Neff, co-coordinator of the Elizabethtown Fair Queen competition.
A great candidate for the competition typically has strong communication skills; genuine interest in agriculture, fairs, youth programs or community service; professionalism and reliability; warmth and approachability; and leadership qualities that make her comfortable speaking to groups, meeting officials and advocating for agriculture, Neff said.
“You don’t need to be a farm kid or have a 4-H or FFA background,” she explained. “Just (be) someone who cares about the fair and its mission.”
The fair queen has a variety of responsibilities, including representing the fair at community events, ceremonies, parades and agricultural functions; participating in the state fair queen competition in Hershey each January; engaging with fairgoers during fair week by presenting awards, greeting visitors, supporting youth

the bus. I always tried to be a good influence on the children. It seemed like the right time.
“I got a couple of cards from parents that said, ‘We consider you a friend, not just our child’s bus driver,’” added Esbenshade.
As an employee of Brightbill Transportation, Esbenshade drove bus No. 44 between five and seven hours every school day - mornings and afternoons. Her passengers included high school kids, elementary school children and students attending the Brownstown campus of Lancaster County Career and Technology Center.
“I opened my door as many as 90 times a day,” said Esbenshade. “I was always on time. I hardly ever missed work. I had perfect attendance quite a few years. I tried to be kind to the kids - not to be their buddy, but I tried to be respectful. I never really dreaded going to work.”
Esbenshade began driving at a time when busses had manual stick-shift transmissions and drivers were expected to check and add fluids to their busses’ engines and apply chains to tires during times of inclem-

ent weather. That work is now performed by transportation company mechanics.
“The reason I started doing it is because it allowed me to be home with our (three) children,” said Esbenshade. “I think it’s an excellent job for a mother or retiree who wants summers off. I feel like Brightbill pays very well, and they offer incentives. They try to do things that show their appreciation.”
Esbenshade started driving a bus for Hinkletown Mennonite School in 1981 before taking a bus driving position that filled a need in the ELANCO School District.
“I know I’m going to miss some of the children,” said Esbenshade. “Some of the children came up to me and said, ‘I’m really going to miss you.’ One girl cried, and some of the parents came out to wish me well. I have a lot of respect for parents who expect their children to act responsibly. I tried to treat everyone the same and tried to be respectful of rules.”
“It probably won’t fully hit me until the fall,” concluded Esbenshade. “But I’ll be glad not to get up at five in the morning anymore.”

Both organizations accept cats as well. “For the most part (with) cats, it’s mostly kitten fostering,” said Reinmiller. “It’s socializing and housing until they are old enough to come to the shelter for adoption.” Kittens must be eight weeks old or weigh two pounds to stay at the shelter.
At All 4 Paws Rescue, both rescues and owner surrenders that are not immediately adopted go to foster homes the same day. “We like the foster care system because it gives the (pet) a home as opposed to a kennel,” said Hendricks. “It’s about whether we have a foster home (available) that will work,” she added, pointing out that foster homes are always needed. Reflecting on her own experience fostering, Hen -
dricks stated that she has reaped many benefits. “It’s wonderful to be part of a dog’s journey,” she said.

exhibitors and promoting agricultural education; and advocating for agriculture and the importance of fairs in Pennsylvania.
“The fair queen serves as the public face and ambassador of the fair for one full year,” Neff explained. “In short, she is the spokesperson, cheerleader and representative for both the Elizabethtown Fair and agriculture in Elizabethtown.”
At the competition during the fair, the candidates must present a prepared speech, often about the importance of fairs or agriculture. They also participate in an interview with a panel of judges

“There is no talent portion in the traditional sense,” she said. “This is an ambassador role, not a talent pageant.”
