few years ago, Lighthouse Vocational Services was looking to enhance the educational services it offers to its clients. “Our previous quality assurance director wanted something more (for clients),” recalled Lighthouse program specialist Jen Swanson. The director had heard of the project-based learning programs being implemented for students being served by the Lancaster-Lebanon IU13.

Enter Lori Blantz, instructional technology specialist with the IU. “I assist all our educators from preschool through age 21 with STEM and technology, computers, and communication devices,” explained Blantz, who then simplified her role by adding, “In this situation, STEM is out-of-the-box learning.” Blantz set about creating life-enrichment units for Lighthouse working with fellow IU staff members Jen Bennett,

Ketrina Walter, and Giovanna Chamberlain. In July of 2024, the IU staff members began working with Lighthouse staff members, including Swanson and program specialist Kaitlyn Deemer. “We did several training sessions with Lighthouse, and we planned (monthly) programs through

March (of 2025),” said Blantz. Blantz admitted there were some differences between her usual work and lesson requirements for Lighthouse, an organization that exists to promote growth opportunity and hope for persons with disabilities based on Christian values and principles.

“It was a challenge to work with a population that I haven’t worked with,” said Blantz, who added that researching how to teach daily devotions for students is not usually part of her job. Swanson stated that since Lighthouse personnel are not required to have educational

certifications, some staff members were apprehensive about the training. Blantz said that initial training sessions focused on the monthly lessons the IU staff had devised, which ran from October 2024 through March of this year. “We created six lessons,” said Blantz, who listed lesson topics as

seasons. Participants arrive at 9 a.m., and the day begins with devotions, which includes reading a chapter from the Bible, praying, and singing. Caregiver Sarah Fisher noted that lessons - arithmetic, reading, spelling, and English - are part of each morning session.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. Some days participants bring their own lunches, and some days the meal is prepared at the center. Beiler reported that the lunch on June 11, which happened to be eaten outdoors, featured potatoes, meatballs, peas, and salad.

Apple crisp was served for dessert.

After lunch, there is a story time, followed by projects to be worked on. Fisher said that the group still packages poly clothespins and makes keychains with beads. Male members of the group mow the grass. On June 11, boxes of snap peas awaited the group of 15 in the cool of the workshop. Another new project involves packing paper tablets. Beiler explained that packaging the tablets involves cutting, adding stickers and magnets, and then putting the tablets in bags.

Together, Sunny Sunbeam and the other centers - Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, Caring Hearts, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - give the more than 100 adults who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Beiler noted that two of the Sunny Sunbeam attendees come from Maryland.

Highlights of this year’s auction will include carriages, swing sets, and sheds. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, scooters, wagons, tools, and outdoor furniture. Quilts made at Caring Hearts are scheduled to be sold at 4 p.m.

Beiler said that he enjoys helping out at the auction. “I’m looking forward to it,” he stated. Fisher noted that Beiler will hold up items that are being auctioned and then take them to the winning bidder.

Food that will be available for purchase at the auction will include egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Among the lunch items will be cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out.

p.m. The concert is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs. There is no rain date for the event.

During the concert, the band will perform two sets of well-known favorites, such as “American Salute,”

“The Stars and Stripes Forever,” and “America the Beautiful.” Broadway tunes that will be featured will include selections from “The Music Man.”

The evening’s music will also pay homage to piano tunes with band member Rich Fitz performing Billy Joel’s “Root Beer Rag.”

“It’s a fun piece, and Rich does a great job playing it on the piano,” noted Hughes.

Hughes is especially looking forward to presenting Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” at the end of the concert with plans for some audience participation in the piece known for its booming cannons. “We won’t have cannons, but we will have something to replicate (that sound),” explained Hughes. “We will ask people to help us out with it. It will be a fun surprise.”

civics, nutrition, religions around the world, diversity, life cycles, and disability awareness. Blantz said the IU staff taught the first two lessons - focusing on the presidential election for civics and Thanksgiving foods for nutrition. “We worked with (Lighthouse staff members) to show them how to use the lessons,” said Blantz. Each unit teaches about the theme in a number of academic subjects including art, social studies, language arts, Bible, and American Sign Language. According to Blantz, for the civics unit, clients took part in hands-on activities such as making ballots and voting boxes in art. “For our October unit on civics, for religion lessons, we talked about ... what God has provided to us and being good citizens to help others,” said Blantz, who added that clients measured, cut, and created blankets that were given to a nonprofit organization.

members were asked which subjects they were comfortable teaching.

“(Lighthouse) staff members worked with their own strengths and (learning interests),” commented Blantz.

“Now they are doing a great job (teaching),” stated Swanson.

Mark Slider, who recently became director of development and marketing with Lighthouse, is a veteran educator. Blantz noted that the immersive nature of the lessons is key. “Clients planted in a raised garden to learn about the cycle of life,” she pointed out. Swanson noted that the project-based lessons offer more manipulatives and face-to-face learning as opposed to showing clients videos.
