CAVOD Camps Are Cures for Summertime Blues

The summer months afford students an opportunity to take breaks from classroom studies.

But kids want to be active. Kids want to learn in other ways. Kids want to explore themselves.

At CAVOD Performing Arts’ creative and inspiring summer camps, all of those discoveries are in play.

“Our mission is to create with purpose,” said Connie Dienner, the founder of CAVOD Performing Arts and the organization’s executive director for the past 22 years.

“We want the children to have fun and express themselves. I think they’ll get an opportunity

to explore and discover things in the arts.”

CAVOD Performing Arts, which is headquartered at 665 W. Main St., New Holland, is again offering five summer camps for students interested in dancing, singing, acting and creating. CAVOD’s

weeklong instructional camps, which will be offered throughout the month of July, are designed to promote social skills, nurture growth and provide deeper messages.

Ever-evolving nonprofit Aaron’s Acres has added another new program for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. It’s called “Dramability,” and it promotes confidence and self-exploration within its participants.

“Dramability” fits in well with Aaron’s Acres vision and mission, and it serves as the perfect complement to the organization’s other therapeutic programs.

Volunteers Help Samaritan Center Hit Home Runs

It is not enough to appreciate the contributions of volunteers. Nonprofit organizations must express that appreciation.

At its upcoming event, the Samaritan Center will validate the contributions its volunteers constantly and consistently make.

“Our volunteers are super important,” said Nancy Pleger, the development officer for the Samaritan Center. “They are the ones who keep the place running. They give support to staff members and the executive team and allow us to do more. They use their connections to help us get in doors. Volunteers are the backbone. Without these dedicated volunteers, we’re just people offering services. We’re not a community lifting each other up.”

The Samaritan Center’s appreciation will be on full display during its Community and Volunteer event on Sunday, June 28, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, the home of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club. On that day, the Stormers will take on the Gastonia Ghost Peppers at 1:30 p.m. Gates will open at 12:30 p.m.

The Historic Ephrata Cloister was the site of a Revolutionary War military hospital from December 1777 to June 1778. The hospital accommodated 260 soldiers, 60 of whom died and are buried on the grounds of the historic site. During this commemorative event, visitors may learn more about the military hospital and its impact on the pacifist members of the Ephrata Cloister. Visitors may learn about 18th-century medicine, printing, camp life, and being a pacifist during wartime. They may visit the Witness Tree on the property as well as the monument honoring the soldiers in the Mount Zion Cemetery. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The Ephrata

Some activities will require a wristband, which can be obtained upon paying admission. Wristbands are required for select performances and will operate on a firstcome, first served-basis.

Among the programs requiring a wristband is the Lantern Tour Reprise, which will be held multiple times in the 1741 Meetinghouse, also known as the Saal. The tour will focus on the impact of the military hospital on the pacifist community.

“The Life of a Sister” will be held in the 1743 Sisters’ House, also called the Saron. Attendees will learn about the lifestyle of a solitary Sister and how the Sisters aided the soldiers through herbal medicines and remedies. A wristband is required. The event will take place rain or shine. On-site parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is an admission fee for people over age 2 who are not members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates. Members and children age 2 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets will be sold on the day of the event, and no advance sales will be available.

Recently, a group of New Holland residents got a firsthand look at the benefits of Aaron’s Acres’ “Dramability.” The program showcased a performance it had produced called “Possibilities” in front of an audience of about 120 inside the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.

“We had some Aaron’s Acres families come,” said Heider. “I thought it was really received well. I received multiple compliments.”

During the hourlong performance of “Possibilities,”

“Each participant was onstage for various amounts of time based on their comfortability,” said Heider, a resident of Akron. “Each participant picked an individual who had disabilities and did poems. These individuals came back through a time machine and accepted awards. The disabilities didn’t hold them back. They were just learning points in their journeys.”

The Aaron’s Acres participants who performed in New Holland reside in Lititz, Elizabethtown, Mount Joy and other parts of Lancaster County.

The 25-week process, which began in September of 2025, included research, character development, script writing, blending, tweaks and home rehearsals.

“Each participant saw their own challenges in the characters,” said Heider. “Some of the passion they put into their words were wonderful. I think they learned that they could do things they may not have known they could do before. I think a lot can be gained from this program.

“I think seeing it all come together was a big high,” continued Heider. “That and just how confident everyone was onstage was really impressive.”

Aaron’s Acres’ “Dramability” is designed for individuals between the ages of 21 and 40 with developmental and physical disabilities. Following a successful debut, the second session of the program will begin in September, preceded by open registrations in July.

“‘Dramability’ is an inclusive feeder program that allows individuals with disabilities to explore their skills,” said Heider. “‘Possibilities’ was a great opener for the program. It encapsulated what the program can be. We can adapt roles to the needs of individuals. Under our name, we’re able to promote it. There are a lot of benefits from being in a close-knit group.”

Operated by Garden Spot Communities, Garden Spot Village’s stated mission is “inspired by the life of Jesus, we cultivate vibrant community for purposeful living.”

Established in 1996, Garden Spot Village hosts a variety of activities, programs and courses for residents and community members.

Evan’s Tragedy Brought Breathtaking Blessings

Among the greatest gifts of all is the gift of life. Evan Bunting gave the gift of life, multiple times in multiple ways.

Now, his spirit lives on in the lives of others.

“God had a plan I wasn’t aware of, and I didn’t like it,” said Ellen Smoll, Evan’s mom. “It was God’s plan, not mine. Maybe that was the thing He was planning. Now I always want to help people. But I’ve learned a lot about organ donations.

“It’s just so unnatural for your child to leave before you,” she added.

It’s been nearly 14 years since that tragic day, June 19, 2012, when Evan, a vibrant 2009 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, lost his young life in a tragic motorcycle accident. During the process of his passing, a parental decision was made to donate Evan’s organs to individuals in need of transplants and to science.

Those donations were made through Gift of Life, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that connects donors to transplant recipients.

“I got the call no mom ever wants to get,” said Ellen. “The hospital called and said my son had been rushed to the emergency room. My heart sunk. When I arrived at the hospital, I was told to hold on and the chaplain met me. They told me he had sustained damage to his head and he had internal bleeding. I saw him for a few seconds before they took him into the operating room. Then it was just waiting.”

The next day, Evan’s brain showed no signs of activity,

and he was pronounced dead. It was at that point that Ellen was introduced to representatives of Gift of Life.

“They asked me if I would consider donating Evan’s organs, and I immediately said, ‘Yes,’” said Ellen. “They kept him alive to take his gifts. I could hear the helicopters landing to take his organs. It was very emotional. I was in horrible grief, but it was a silver lining.”

Five days later, Ellen received a letter from Gift of Life. Evan’s heart went to a man in his 30s, his liver went to a woman in her 30s, one of his kidneys went to a man in his 50s and his other kidney and his pancreas went to a woman in her 30s. His lungs went to medical research, his skin went to breast cancer patients, one of his corneas

went to a man in his 20s and his other cornea went to a woman in her 90s.

According to Gift of Life, nearly 4,500 adults and children in the Philadelphia region are currently awaiting organ transplants, and an average of 13 people waiting for organ transplants die each day.

“It was probably 100 people he impacted,” said Ellen, a resident of East Earl Township. “I wanted his heart to be beating in someone else. He had beautiful eyes, and I wanted someone else to have them.

Resource Sharing App Launched

A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources, reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”

Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an over -

age of 4,800 clamshells of blueberries. Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intelligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was betatested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.

The Lancaster County Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide. The mobile app allows registered food pantry volunteers to list surplus inventory directly from a smartphone, request needed items from partner organizations across Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries, and view real-time shared inventory for better planning and distribution. Needs may include food and personal care products. As of May 5, the Lancaster County Food Exchange served 32 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers.

Future plans include expanding partnerships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors; integrating additional features for reporting and logistics; and onboarding more community groups that serve local families.

serve as organizational outreach to make the community aware of what the Samaritan Center is all about and what it does.

“We wouldn’t be here without our volunteers,” said Pleger. “The Samaritan Center was established in 1988 as a mission of Highland Presbyterian Church, and it was started by volunteers.”

At the ballpark that afternoon, a selected volunteer will throw out the first pitch, and a Samaritan Center official will address the fans about the work that the nonprofit performs in the community. There will be promotions staged throughout the stadium, and the Samaritan Center will man an information table.

“We’re hoping it’s a fun, high-energy event,” said Pleger. “People can bring their families out and have a great time. The goal is to have a fun day, and so people can learn about (the) Samaritan Center as well. We’re celebrating service and connecting our community.”

But the nonprofit also benefits from 1,000 annual volunteer hours donated by more than 70 altruistic individuals. The majority of the volunteers reside in Lancaster County.

“They’re a group of individuals who really care about mental health in our community,” said Pleger. “They want to make sure services are affordable and available to everyone.”

“We can play a lot of different roles, depending on where we are,” said Nick Heller, the Samaritan Center’s marketing manager. “We break down barriers for people needing mental health services. We are here to help.”

The Samaritan Center, which promotes mental health; provides related services; and operates locations at 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, and at 33 N. Market St., Suite 400, Lancaster, is staffed by 50 employees, mainly therapists and administrative personnel.

From January to May this year, the Samaritan Center has provided more than 8,000 counseling sessions to clients. In 2025, the Samaritan Center furnished more than 17,000 counseling sessions, 2,000 more than it did in 2024.

As part of its services, the organization also offers mental health screenings, educational series, therapeutic programs, consulting, church programs, ministry assessment and its TeenHope program for kids.

“Each are a little different,” said Dienner. “It’s really a great time to come out, have fun and make new friends. Everyone is valued and accepted. Everyone feels they have a place. The studios are decorated beautifully.”

CAVOD’s first summer camp, titled “Once Upon a Kingdom,” will be staged from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 10, in New Holland. Designed to nurture a love for dance, the immersive instruction will be offered for 3- to 6-year-olds from 9 a.m. to noon and for 7to 12-year-olds from 1 to 5 p.m.

Between 9 a.m. and noon from Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, CAVOD Performing Arts will present “Beautifully and Wonderfully Made,” a camp for little dancers from ages 3 to 8 at its Manheim location, 1223 Lancaster Road, Suite 115. That same week, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in New Holland, CAVOD’s “Camp Create” will serve teenagers and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Summer at CAVOD will conclude with its “Summer Dance Intensive” camp from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, in New Holland. The developmental camp designed for dancers ages 10 and older will take campers’ skills to a new level through instruction from teachers and guest artists.

“They’re kids who have found out about us,” said Dienner, a resident of Leola. “Some have taken classes before; some are brand new to the arts. They’re just discovering, ‘This is so fun. I’ve never done this before. Why is this only one week?’ It gives them an opportunity to figure things out; then they put on a program.”

“We want students to learn the importance of their classmates, how to value each one. How to be friends,” continued Dienner. “We want them to know they are important. The summer camps were one of the first programs established when Dienner founded CAVOD in 2004. CAVOD conducts more than 100 singing, dancing, acting and creative classes for kids, teenagers and adults throughout the year; stages a number of public performances inside of its New Holland theater annually; and offers private lessons, all the while praising and serving God.

“Since we were founded, the community itself has grown,” said Dienner. “(CAVOD) has become a community. It’s become a home, a place for those interested in the arts. I think the summer camps really open the door to new people to discover what we’re all about.”

CAVOD Performing Arts will also be conducting an open house in New Holland on Saturday, July 11, and celebrating a grand opening of additional space in Manheim on Saturday, Aug. 1.

During his high school days at Conestoga Valley, Evan was involved with the small engine program at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Willow Street campus.

“Evan was truly a blessing,” said Ellen. “He absolutely lived life to the fullest every day. He had an infectious smile every day. His smile said everything.”

Though details remain sketchy, it seems there were no other vehicles involved in Evan’s accident.

“We can’t figure it out,” said Ellen. “We have met with the police, and they tried to re-enact it, but we just don’t know. A lady saw him, stopped and held his hand.”

Five years after Evan gave the gift of life, Ellen followed his example. She donated one of her kidneys to a woman in Georgia.

“I really didn’t know much about organ donations. But it touched my life,” said Ellen. “Every day is a gift. Don’t take days with your family and friends lightly. If something like this occurs, do the great thing. You can’t take it when you leave.”

Church Sets Garden Tour

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church will hold its first-ever garden tour on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The tour will take place in the New Holland vicinity and will be held rain or shine.

Those who purchase tickets will receive a map showing the locations of the featured gardens, which are all in close proximity and range from Welsh Mountain to the Intercourse area. Attendees will travel at their own pace in their own vehicle, and they may visit any number of the gardens listed on the ticket during

the designated time frame. Each person must show his or her ticket for admission to the private properties. Some gardens will also have food and baked goods for purchase.

Art Association Posts Summer Exhibit

Lancaster Nonprofit to Host First Fundraiser at

Millersville VFW

Supporting Empowering Lives Foundation (SELF) is holding a bingo fundraiser at the Millersville VFW Post 7294 on Sunday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The post, located at 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, will host the newly formed nonprofit’s first fundraising event.

SELF, formed last summer as the offshoot of another, now-defunct disabilities group, aims to help anyone with a disability live an independent life. According to the group’s website, its mission is “to serve clients with disabilities by identifying and addressing the gaps in support, resources and advocacy - picking the pieces so no one falls through the gaps.”

The event will consist of 10 normal bingo games, with the winner getting to pick a gift card prize. There will then be special games of bingo and a Chinese auction for some of the larger prizes, as well as a 50-50 drawing.

The prizes, all of which have been donated by local businesses and community members, include tickets to Hershey Gardens, the Reading Royals, Reading Fightin Phils, Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Sight & Sound and more.

There will also be a food truck at the event, and desserts will be for sale.

“We are very excited,” said Jacki Nagle, the group’s chief executive officer. “We are very fortunate to have a community behind us ... we have the entire community coming together to support us.”

Nagle explained that while children with disabilities are in school, they are entitled to services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. But as soon as they graduate from high school, many families lose access to needed resources, depending on income.

That’s where SELF steps in.

“Services are changing, and we need to make sure that people with disabilities don’t fall through the cracks,” Nagle said. “They still need to receive the support and services that they’re eligible (for) and entitled to as humans.

“Disability is kind of a secondary thing to us,” she went on. “We just want to make sure that people with disabilities specifically are seen as integral parts of society.”

The group, physically located at 313 Liberty St., Suite 365, Lancaster, primarily serves those in Lancaster and Lebanon counties but will not turn down anybody who asks for help.

Puts Local Spin on American Backstories

All humans are created equally, and peoples of different colors, backgrounds and beliefs can share the Earth and peacefully coexist. If indeed America is a grand experiment, then those are the premises.

On the occasion of this country’s 250th anniversary, Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum’s America250 lecture series examines forces which have directly and indirectly affected that experiment and highlights the role that Pennsylvania and Lancaster have played in it.

The seven-speaker America250 lecture series that Long has pulled together will be presented at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on the last Friday of every month. There are costs involved with attending the series of lectures, which will conclude on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Kutztown University’s Patrick Donmoyer’s presentation on “The Legend of Mountain Mary” kicked off the America250 lecture series at 6 p.m. on May 29. It will be followed by historian Scott Mingus’ talk on “The Underground Rail -

road in Lancaster” at 6 p.m. on June 26, Philip Gruber’s discussions about “Farmer Revolts in Early America” at 6 p.m. on July 31, and Scott Sheeley’s speech on “Lancaster’s Role in American’s Food System” at 6 p.m. on Aug. 28.

At 6 p.m. on Sept. 25, Lynette Miller will put a historical spin on “18th Century Fashion in Lancaster.” Dr. William Woys Weaver will expound upon the topic of “Pennsylvania Dutch Food Traditions” at 6 p.m. on Oct. 30, while long rifle and back powder expert John Kolar’s talk on “Lancaster Gunsmiths of the Early Republic” at 6 p.m. on Nov. 18 will conclude the series and preview Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum’s upcoming exhibit featuring early firearms.

OMPH School Celebrates Eighth-Grade Graduation

Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic School (OMPH School) held its eighth-grade graduation Mass and ceremony at the close of the 2025-26 school year. During the event, Teresa Hartman, director of advancement, presented each graduate with an OMPH School alumni pin.

Award for Educational Excellence, Emily Sedlak and Deanna Yarnes; the President’s Award for Educational Achievement, Liv Chavez and Ian Trimble; the Doctor Laukaitis Award, Deanna; the Andrew and Helen Zipfel Scholarship, Ian; the Reverend Patrick McGarrity, C.Ss.R.
