GSMS Awards Acknowledge Academic Achievement

We can’t expect students to model behavior that they don’t see. We can’t expect students to know about things we don’t express to them.
When it comes to emerging psyches, we need to be intentional and deliberate.
That they are hardworking, bright and valued is an important message for children to receive.
“Our kids have to know what they’re working for is important,” said Heather Schrantz, principal
of Garden Spot Middle School (GSMS). “You need to mark these incremental moments. What we’re all working toward is high school graduation. Our kids are working really hard, and they need to know what they’re doing is really important.”
Schrantz also served as a presenter during a GSMS ceremony at the end of May that was like a commencement exercise for eighth-graders. Each of GSMS’ 219 eighth-graders who is moving on to the high school received certificates of completion, and academic
excellence was recognized with awards.
The eighth-grade promotional ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance and included welcoming remarks and vocal ensembles by sixth- and seventh-grade singers. Eighth-graders Kate Gehman and Elliott Wehn received the prestigious American Legion awards, which were presented by United States Marine Corps veteran Allan Noll. Before you can teach students, you must first reach them. Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) has the curriculum, the forward thinking and the professors to challenge active minds.
“People often know PCA&D as an art school, but what they may not realize is how deeply connected we are to workforce development, community partnerships and the regional economy,” said PCA&D president Andy Barnes. “Our graduates work across industries because creative thinking is valuable everywhere. Employers increasingly need people who can communicate visually, solve problems collaboratively and think innovatively. We’re also proud to be an active partner in downtown Lancaster. PCA&D contributes to the city’s cultural energy, supports local organizations and creates opportunities for community engagement through exhibitions, events and educational programming.”
PCA&D, which is located at 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, offers eight undergraduate degree programs, as well as continuing education opportunities and certificates in a wide array of design, art and creative disciplines. This fall, the college will be offering a new course in creative writing.

Grants Awarded for Programs Aiding Youths
Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Services and the Touchstone Foundation were awarded $500,616 in grant funding to help expand their youth programs aimed at reducing student conflict and improving student mental health, respectively. The competitive grants, approved by the School Safety and Security Committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, are part of more than $64 million awarded to organizations across the state. The Advoz and Touchstone grants were recently announced by state Rep. Nikki Rivera. Advoz will use its $244,850 to expand its Restorative School Program at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster city. The grant funds will cover the partial salaries and benefits of the executive director, director of training, and restorative schools practitioner. Additionally, funding will be used for advertising and marketing expenses, rent, a laptop, general operating expenses, and information technology support. The program serves approximately 750 students annually, teaching them skills in communication, problem

because society increasingly needs people who can innovate, connect ideas and bring humanity into complex challenges. In an AI-driving world, uniquely human skills - imagination, ethics, empathy and vision - become even more essential. Education also builds community.”
In May, PCA&D graduated 93 students. There are currently more than 400 students enrolled in PCA&D programs for the fall of 2026, about 70 percent of whom hail from Pennsylvania.
“It leaves an imprint on you for sure,” said Oakly Buscarino, a 2026 graduate of PCA&D. “It’s a wacky collective of students from a variety of backgrounds and identities - you’re bound to have common interests with someone else. Socially, it’s very fun and supportive - classes have a different vibe. The atmosphere can be professional but also collaborative, and it’s easy to develop a synergy between the classmates and the professors. Overall, it’s very welcoming and supportive.”

creative, thoughtful and incredibly motivated,” said Barnes. “Many are looking for a place where they can authentically and unapologetically be themselves and explore how creativity connects to their future. Today’s students are also deeply aware of the world around them. They care about community, identity, technology, social issues and making meaningful contributions. They want careers, but they also want purpose and impact. What’s exciting is seeing how they apply creativity beyond traditional expectations, whether it’s in design, entrepreneurship, health care, entertainment, technology, education or nonprofit work.”
The staff at PCA&D is made up of 19 full-time faculty members, 76 parttime or adjunct faculty and 36 staff members.
“Our faculty combine technical instruction with mentorship, collaboration and hands-on learning,” said Barnes. “Students learn through studio practice, critiques, real-world projects and interdisciplinary experiences. Our faculty are working artists too, so they integrate their real-world experiences into coursework and class discussions. We also emphasize adaptability. Creative careers continue to evolve rapidly, so students need to know how to learn, pivot and apply their skills in different environments. Faculty work closely with students to help them develop both creative confidence and professional readiness.”
PCA&D was established in 1982. Over the past 44 years, the institution has added more academic offerings, developed community partnerships and participated in and promoted public events.

Community Festival Planned at Park
The Terre Hill Days Festival will take place at Terre Hill Community Memorial Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., on Thursday and Friday, June 25 and 26, from 5 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, June 28, from
10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The family-friendly event will offer food, games, and carnival rides, along with free live entertainment each day. Special events will include chainsaw carving, a magic show, a reptile show, face painting, tug-of-war,
and yard sales. On June 27, attendees may enjoy the annual arts and crafts fair, an airplane candy drop, children’s entertainment, and fireworks. Activities on June 28 will include a community church service, a covered dish community

Sierra Club Awards Grants
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group recently announced the names of 12 more Lancaster County organizations that have been awarded its “Green Project” Grants. The announcement was made as part of the Sierra Club’s celebration of Earth Day, April 22. Each of the recipient organizations, in submitted proposals, explained a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards,

Penn State Extension Master Gardener Colleen Emmerling will provide instruction and tips for creating a bird-friendly garden during her upcoming informational presentation.
“Everyone can learn about better plant choices that make a positive local impact,” said Emmerling. “People might already place water or birdseed in their space to attract birds, even bird boxes for nesting. But in a bird-friendly garden there are plants, shrubs and trees that support high-protein insects, especially caterpillars, which in turn supports most birds during breeding season. Water and food are the primary attractors for resident and migratory birds, with shelter being very important for resident birds.”

“It’ll be an informative experience for every level of garden enthusiast,” said Emmerling, a resident of Conestoga. “Simple actions on our part can help birds thrive through habitat improvement via native plant choices and less use of pesticides. Wise native plant choices are foundational and can slow down insect decline and improve bird populations.”
Emmerling’s presentation on creating a birdfriendly garden will last about an hour and will conclude with a question-and-answer session. Her talk will be guided by a PowerPoint presentation and informational handouts.
“I enjoy a conversational style when presenting,” said Emmerling, “and I enjoy meeting new people.”
A member of the speakers’ bureau of the Lancaster County Master Gardeners, Emmerling presents about three similar talks each
year, including ones on composting, terrariums and ponds in a pot. Volunteer speakers like Emmerling address garden clubs, herb clubs, community organizations, historical societies, senior living communities, businesses and libraries.
The Ephrata Public Library will host a Master Gardener “Succulents” presentation at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 27, and a “Creating Year-Round Interest With Native Plants” talk at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
“I enjoy the variety you see in nature; seasonal changes amaze me,” said
Emmerling. “I am still working and learning to get that elusive expert designation.”
Emmerling earned the distinction of Master Gardener in 2020, after finishing coursework and the volunteer time required by the Penn State Extension.
“Penn State Extension Master Gardeners are volunteers who have an interest and enthusiasm for gardening and are trained in a broad range of horticultural topics,” Emmerling said.

Rise Above responds directly to community needs documented in the 2023 Pennsylvania Youth Survey and the Touchstone Foundation’s 2023 Needs Assessment, which showed high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, exclusion, and
barriers to mental health access among Lancaster County youths. Through partnerships with local school districts, mental health professionals, and community organizations, the program blends mental health education, creative self-expression, youth leadership development, and mentorship to address gaps in early identification, access to support, and trusted adult relationships.
Football and Cheerleading League Posted
The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) has opened registration for the Challenger Football and Cheerleading League for the 2026-27 school year.
The league offers opportunities for people ages 8 to 21 with disabilities in Lancaster and surrounding cities to exercise while having
fun. Along with teaching football and cheerleading fundamentals, the league gives players the opportunity to participate in a group activity where they can learn skills, interact socially with other individuals, and make new friends.

Located at 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland Park will serve as the venue for a host of community events sponsored by the arts association this summer.
Kicking off the warmweather activities will be the art association’s annual craft show, which will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, at the park. More than 85 vendors offering unique handmade, homemade and repurposed items like jewelry, original art works, crocheting, T-shirts, upscaled glass wares, painted gourds, dog treats, kids’ items and yard ornaments will fill New Holland Park.
Food trucks serving hot and cold breakfast and lunch dishes will be on hand, and members of local Scouting America Troop 48 will be there to lend a hand. All proceeds from the craft show will benefit New Holland Park and the arts association.
“The vibe is always upbeat,” said Noll. “We have a lot of foot traffic coming through the park. I think people look forward to the craft show every year.”
Locals also look forward to the association’s summer arts musical series, “Entertainment in the Park.” This year’s lineup will feature 22 bands, mostly from the area, performing in the band shell three nights a week, from 7 to 9 p.m. on
every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday evening.
The musical series will begin on Wednesday, July 1, with a performance by Swingtime Dolls and conclude on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Fiddlers Picnic, which will feature the Jeff Dillard Bluegrass Band and the Summit Hill Bluegrass Band.
There will also be a special patriotic America250 performance by the New Holland Band on Saturday, July 4, that will include fireworks.
This year marks the 47th time that the arts association has conducted its annual summer musical series.
“I love the music,” said Noll. “I like all kinds of music. Music just kind of brings people together. There’s just something more special about live music. I enjoy watching the dancing and everyone enjoying themselves.”
The 2026 “Entertainment in the Park” schedule will focus on a variety of musical genres, everything from pop, country, jazz and rock to big band, oldies, Irish/Celtic and high-energy dance. All of the performances, which will include intermissions, are free to attend, but freewill offerings will be accepted.
As many as 1,000 music aficionados will attend each concert. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, but there is some seating available in the
park.
The New Holland Summer Arts Association has secured the support of 35 businesses and organizations to offset costs of the series. The association is overseen by a committee of 12 local individuals.
“I make sure we have a good mix of music,” said Noll. “The music is very well received. We have people asking, ‘Do you have that schedule ready yet?’ They look forward to the next year.”

Benefit Auction to Support Clinic
The Clinic for Special Children (CSC), a nonprofit medical practice that provides affordable health care to children and adults with rare genetic disorders, will hold its 35th annual Lancaster County Benefit Auction on Saturday, June 20, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. The auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. A breakfast buffet will open at 6:30 a.m.
The items to be auctioned include handmade quilts, handcrafted furniture, new bedroom suites, toys and collectibles, storage sheds, lawn furniture, crafts, farm supplies, and gift certificates. The event will also offer a silent auction
with unique items for bids. A variety of food will be available, including barbecue chicken, pork sandwiches, subs, french fries, freshly made pies, doughnuts, whoopie pies, and ice cream.
The funds raised from the annual benefit auctions provide nearly half of the CSC’s annual operating budget and allow the clinic to continue to provide affordable, specialized care to families facing rare genetic diseases. Each year, seven auctions across the country are held to support CSC. Since 1990, these auctions have raised close to $22 million to support the CSC’s mission. “It was an absolutely sweet experience,” said Schrantz. “We’ve had a super busy year. Every family was invited, and every child was recognized. The auditorium was pleasantly filled. The families came in and celebrated with the kids. It was a nice culminating moment.”
A total of 588 students in grades six, seven and eight were enrolled at GSMS
during the 2025-26 school year.
“This was my first year at the middle school,” said Schrantz. “My understanding is that something like this was done in the past, but it was much less formal. I want our community to know about the amazing things happening in our school. Our students are good human beings, and the students are working hard, and the parents are working hard. Every family wants their kids to do it just a little better than they have. Parents work with us as they dream, and they help make that be a reality.”

Fundraising Campaign Expands Housing
Bridge of Hope has announced the successful completion of its $9.3 million Making Room comprehensive campaign, a milestone that is already expanding affordable housing access and strengthening long-term stability for families facing homelessness across Lancaster County, Chester County,

Fairmount will hold a free educational seminar called “Planning Your Next Chapter: A Comprehensive Guide to Aging Well, Selling Your Home, and Transitioning to Retirement Living” on Wednesday, July 8, at 1 p.m. in the Wheat Ridge Chapel at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata.

Pork Roast and Graduation Event Set
The Potter’s House will host its annual pork roast and student graduation on Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at the Still Waters Campus, 261 School Lane Ave., Ephrata.
The pork roast meal, complete with sides, desserts, and drinks, will be served from noon to 2 p.m. There is a fee, with a discount for kids age 12 and under. All proceeds
will support the ongoing ministry of the Potter’s House, which focuses on transforming the lives of men and women through recovery and the hope of Jesus Christ.
The graduation ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. It will honor the students who have completed their program journey.

In Lancaster County, campaign investments resulted in six affordable housing units located in Lititz, Manheim, Paradise Township, and Lancaster Township - communities where rising rents have increasingly outpaced wages. The locations of several of the homes will help children remain connected to their schools, routines, and support systems during times of transition.
The campaign also helped launch the Bridgeport Housing collaboration with Chestnut Housing, Forest Hills Mennonite Church, and Conestoga Valley SEEDS. The partnership aims to add 12 to 15 affordable homes by 2027-28, expanding the community’s long-term capacity to respond to family homelessness.
Beyond individual homes, the Making Room campaign strengthened Lancaster County’s housing ecosystem by expanding creative strategies that help families facing home-
lessness move more quickly from crisis into housing, such as growing landlord partnerships, using master leasing and lease guarantees, strengthening cross-sector collaboration, and increasing rental assistance.
The campaign also reinforced the supports that help families remain housed. Families often enter permanent housing after months or even years of instability, carrying the weight of prolonged stress and uncertainty. Through strengthened whole-family support, Bridge of Hope has sought to reduce isolation, address the emotional toll of homelessness through mental health-informed care, and surround parents and children with neighboring volunteers who walk alongside them as they stabilize, heal, and rebuild.
Together, these efforts contributed to a 65% increase in Bridge of Hope families served in Lancaster County. While the campaign was a success,
the work continues. Bridge of Hope continues to expand housing solutions, strengthen pathways to employment and financial stability, mobilize more neighboring volunteers, and prepare for a new phase of work focused on longterm community impact. Bridge of Hope National is a Christian faith-based nonprofit organization working to end family homelessness across the United States. Bridge of Hope partners with families facing homelessness to help them achieve safe, sustainable housing by strengthening financial stability, providing whole-family case management, and fostering supportive neighboring relationships with volunteers from local Christian churches who offer ongoing relational and practical support.
