Basehore and Musser Receive Legion Awards

Many years ago, the New Holland American Legion Conestoga Post 662 began presenting a special award to two Garden Spot Middle School (GSMS) students. The award has become a tradition in New Holland, and for decades one eighthgrade girl and one eighth-grade boy have received the award at the end of the school year.

This year, the awards ceremony was held in the GSMS gym on the morning of May 22. Assistant principal Robert Arrick welcomed students and introduced Alan Noll, commander of Post 662.

“Our first award is very unique,” stated Arrick. “Each year one girl and one boy from the eighthgrade class is recognized for possessing and displaying the

following characteristics,” Arrick said, listing those characteristics set forth by the American Legion as honor, scholarship, service, Americanism, leadership, and courage. Arrick explained that in early May, students were given the opportunity to nominate their peers based on those criteria. The nominations were tallied, and the names of the top three boys and girls were presented to GSMS faculty and staff members, who chose two winners.

Noll spoke about the award before announcing the 2025 winners. “It is an honor and a privilege for me to present the American Legion award to a male and female student at (GSMS),” he stated, adding that the qualities for which the award is given are “necessary for the preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions

Fourth Community Family Fun Day Planned

When local churches held the third annual Bowmansville Community Family Fun Day last year, the response was overwhelming.

“We ran out of food,” confessed Phil Shober, pastor of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC). Organizers had planned enough food for 500, but more was necessary.

“Last year, we went and got more food,” explained Tony Witmer, lead pastor with Bowmansville Mennonite Church (BMC).

Run/Walk To Benefit Alzheimer’s Association

As part of an effort to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and in memory of her mother, Carol, who passed away from the disease in 2017, Lynn Cronomiz of Morgantown will again host the Paint the Town Purple 5K, with all proceeds supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

This year’s event, which will include a 5K run and 1K fun walk, will take place at the Zerbe Retirement Community,

2499 Zerbe Road, Narvon, on Saturday, June 14. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the 5K and walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants and attendees are encouraged to wear purple to the event.

This is the third year for the fundraiser. Paint the Town Purple began in 2023 at Historic Joanna Furnace. This is the second year it is being held at the retirement community.

“We’re hoping to grow it this year. We are trying to attract runners from the Lancaster area

(as well),” Cronomiz noted, adding, “The past two years we had beautiful weather. The 5K is professionally timed, and we accurately measured the course to be a 5K.”

Nonrunners and walkers are also invited to attend to cheer on the 5K participants, but it is requested that they arrive by 9:15 am. due to a road closure.

“The run goes out of Zerbe Mansion and down the hill on Zerbe Road and turns right onto Hammertown Road. The Caernarvon Township police will have half of the road secured and the other half (open) to let out runners,”

Cronomiz explained. “Then, they run up the hill about a half mile to the top of Zerbe Road and turn left. They will go along School House Lane, which is on the campus.” She noted that the walkers will stay on the campus on School House Lane. Retirement community residents are also involved in efforts to support the Alzheimer’s Association. “They did a bingo on May 19, and they raised $310,” she said. “The residents will also do a bake sale at the race.”

There will also be an opportunity for attendees to win gift baskets through a random drawing. 5K

participants will get five tickets, but the public may purchase tickets to win prizes, such as Wawa and Olive Garden gift cards. Runners and walkers will receive goodie bags and will be provided with bottled water.

Partipants in last year’s event included (from left) race co-directors Pam Haas and Lynn Cronomiz, Freddie Henry and Lynne Bickta.

Cronomiz said it is important to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association, which helps patients and family members deal with the challenges of the disease. Thanks to the organization, she also reconnected with her friend Pam Haas through an Alzheimer’s Association support group. Haas, who lost her husband to the disease, is co-director of the race.

Cronomiz noted that the Alzheimer’s Association has made great strides in helping people with the disease. For example, new blood tests are now being used to measure amyloid levels in the blood. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain.

“This (blood test) from a general practitioner helps diagnose people sooner, and they can go to a neurologist and start treatments early,” she said. “That is when they are most affected - at the beginning stages with mild cognitive impairment. What has happened in the last 25 years has been dramatic in getting treatment.”

Cronomiz is also a volunteer and advocate with the Alzheimer’s Association, which seeks to provide increased research dollars and support for caregivers. “I was a business analyst, and I now put all that energy into finding a cure because (my mother’s) death affected me too much,” Cronomiz shared. “I am involved in the advocacy portion where we go to the legislators and ask for more funding.”

“It is my ardent wish that we can finally know the first survivor of Alzheimer’s disease during my lifetime,” she added.

The local race is being held as part the Longest Day initiative. Each year on the summer solstice, the day with the most light, thousands of advocates across the world participate in the Longest Day to “fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s” through an activity of their choice. The Longest Day coincides with Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month in June.

Food and Fireworks To Headline Heritage Days

When Roman Thomas was a child, his father, Kurt, was among the first organizers of the Intercourse Heritage Days event. “We had a food stand,” recalled Roman, who recently became a member of the Heritage Days committee. “I remember the food tent at the old park,” he said. “It rained, and there was like a river running down (through the event).”

Roman’s memories actually date back to the Village of Intercourse anniversary celebration held in 2004. “In 2004, we had the 250th anniversary, and we dedicated the (new) Intercourse Community Park,” recalled fellow committee member Mike Sensenig. “We decided to keep doing it, so the first Heritage Days was held in 2005. It’s (been) 20 years.” The 2025 Heritage Days celebration will be held in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville, beginning on Friday, June 20, with the opening of the food showcase at 5 p.m. The event will continue on Saturday, June 21, when the Intercourse Fire Company pancake and sausage breakfast for purchase starts the day at 6:30 a.m.

THURSDAY Open 8am-5pm

Both Roman and Sensenig are excited for the return of the fireworks display, which will close the event, on June 21 beginning at dusk. “We are very excited about the fireworks,” pointed out Sensenig. “I think that will be a great show.”

According to Sensenig, the food showcase has always been an important part of the event. “The vision from the beginning was local restaurants providing real food,” he noted.

of our government and the advancement of society.” Noll went on to note that the award should be considered “a building block in the foundation of the character of the recipients and serve as an indication of their future status as outstanding members of the community.” He then announced the recipients of this year’s award - Annie Lee Basehore and Jackson Musser. “On behalf of the American Legion and members of Post 662, we wish you success in all your future endeavors and ask that you continue to hold the principles of this award. May God bless America.”

Annie Lee is the daughter of Brad and Heather Basehore of Goodville. At school, Annie Lee is a cheerleader. She also plays field hockey and is a member of the track team. Annie Lee plays viola in orchestra and is on the yearbook staff.

Jackson is the son of Andrew

and Julianne Musser of New Holland. His school activities include running cross-country and taking part in track. He also plays double bass in the orchestra.

To make sure the parents of the Legion Award recipients can be present at the ceremony, a GSMS staff member contacts them prior to the event. Keeping the knowledge of the award secret from their children is often a challenge for the parents. Annie Lee’s mother, Heather, said that keeping the secret was made more complicated by the fact that Annie Lee’s sister and Garden Spot High School senior, Mae, was in the room when the call came about two weeks prior to the presentation. Jackson’s father, Andrew, said that he and Julianne did not have trouble keeping the secret and that he was confident that Jackson had no idea he would win until he heard his name announced by Noll.

According to Witmer, not a lot has changed for this year, but organizers do regularly tweak the activities. “Each year we learn a little bit and make adjustments,” he stated. “We like to keep people wondering what’s going to happen,” he added with a chuckle. This year’s activities will include pony rides, a bounce house, face painting, barrel train rides, fire engine rides, and horse-drawn covered wagon rides. New this year will be a special show by Jesse Rothacker, The Reptile Guy, founder of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. Rothacker’s educational programs feature live animals, including snakes, lizards, and turtles.

Free food will include hot dogs, french fries, meatball sandwiches, and cotton candy.

On Sunday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m., a church service will be held under the tent in the park. Plenty of seating will be available at the event. During the service, a freewill offering will be received to benefit the Northeastern Lancaster County Food Bank, the Bowmansville Fire Company, and Good Samaritan Services of Ephrata.
