Scholarships Reinforce Legion’s Commitment to Community

Conestoga American Legion Post 662 not only talks the talk, it walks the walk.
Indelibly ingrained in the community’s past, Conestoga American Legion Post 662’s focus includes both the present and the future. That commitment is exemplified in the American Legion post’s annual scholarship program.
Recently, the Conestoga American Legion announced this year’s recipients of the scholarships. The four 2026 winners were recognized during a brief and informal celebration at Post 662’s headquarters at 35 S. Hoover Ave. in New Holland.

Pictures tell stories differently than words. Photos stimulate visualization, which triggers the imagination in a way that provides one with a different perspective on reality.
The America250 exhibit at the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) uses photos to tell the story of the past.
“Yes, a picture is worth a thousand words in that they almost always illicit conversation if there is more than one person looking at them,” said Don Horning, a 16-year member of NHAHS who pulled the exhibit together. “Now, they can talk about it. A picture also has the potential to illicit a thousand words.”
NHAHS’s “America at 250: Photos From the Past” exhibit is currently on display at the organization’s museum, which is located at 207 E. Main St., New Holland. NHAHS is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays, the exhibit is free to view, and everyone is welcome.
“Entertainment and knowledge are part of what a museum does,” said Horning. “The photos will engage people just because of their age. We’ve been here for a while.”
NHAHS constructed its “America at 250: Photos From the Past” exhibit to commemorate the United States’ milestone birthday and to recognize the role that New Holland played in the country’s development. The display consists of more than 50 donated photos - some as old as 125 years - that are now

“Family Day is important because we raise resources for those who are served by Lighthouse Vocational Services,” said Slider. “While raising resources, we are also raising awareness of the variety of services we offer for families, especially those impacted by autism, mental health issues, as well as those impacted by a variety of intellectual and developmental challenges.”
Highlighting Family Day will be a flower sale featuring shrubs, plants and gardening equipment; a variety of food trucks; and a number of local musical groups, including the New Holland Band. The event will also offer face painting, miniature golf, ice cream and bubbles.
“We create a family-friendly event in order to serve the community, have fun and raise money,” said Slider.
Officials of Lighthouse Vocational Services are hoping to raise $25,000 through Family Day.
“We promote growth, opportunity and hope for persons with disabilities based on Christian values and principles,” said Slider. “For the past 51 years, we have served people in the Amish, Mennonite and Plain communities. Often, folks from these communities do not accept government funding. We raise funds to subsidize the costs for these folks so they can receive the services they deserve while being trained to be great employees for businesses in Lancaster County and beyond.”
Currently, Lighthouse Vocational Services is serving more than 230 program participants. The local nonprofit also partners with more than 40 similar altruistic organizations and more than 200 civic-minded businesses.
Founded by Norman Hahn, Melvin Martin, John Sensenig and Ben Weaver as Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center, the organization first served three participants in a farmhouse in Blue Ball in 1975. In 2000, Lighthouse Vocational Services moved its operations to an industrial park on Orlan Road.
Today, Lighthouse Vocational Services, which is overseen by an 11-member board of directors, provides programs in skills training, virtual training, employment services, student transition and community outreach.

There are few things as relaxing and inspiring as a day on the golf course. Unless of course it’s a day on the golf course for a great cause.
HOPE International, a local faith-based nonprofit designed to aid underserved individuals around the world experiencing financial difficulties, is gearing up this year’s edition of its annual fundraising golf outing.
On Friday, Sept. 11, HOPE International’s golf outing will be staged at 8 a.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall. On the same day at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the event will be conducted at Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford.
“For 25 years, this golf tournament has been about so much more than golf,” said Jeff Rutt, HOPE International’s founder and chairman of the board.
“Every dollar raised has gone toward giving hardworking entrepreneurs in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities access to the small loans, savings and training they need to build a better future for their families.”
In addition to an enjoyable round of golf, participants will enjoy on-course activities and opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. Currently, organizers of HOPE International’s golf outing are seeking players and sponsors for the event.

Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host an exhibit by Lancaster artist Liz Hess through Tuesday, June 30. The exhibit is on display in the GSV Main Street Gallery, which may be reached from the Garden Lobby, accessible via Lot 8, or the main entrance, accessible via Lot 1.
A full-time artist, Hess owned and operated a gallery on Gallery Row in downtown Lancaster for nearly 20 years. She closed her gallery last year to work privately for two businesses abroad and a Pennsylvania corporation outside of the local area. She is lending a complete collection to GSV as she transitions from her gallery to her private engagements.
Many artists pursue adult education classes or other such activities as a means to keep the inspiration fresh throughout their careers, but Hess has found that annual trips for the sole purpose of painting are the catalyst needed to push her into new areas of artistic exploration. Her
well-known “Red Umbrella” series was first created during one of her many painting trips abroad.
But art was not always her primary focus. For eight years, Hess lived 10 miles north of the Arctic Circle in a village in Sweden’s Lapland, where she served on a mission team, working with a local Swedish congregation. She speaks, reads, and writes Swedish fluently, and she has periodically returned to Sweden for visits since moving back to the U.S.

Medical Equipment Donations Sought
Jewish Family Service of Lancaster (JFS) is asking the community to donate clean, functional durable medical equipment to help meet a growing local need. Items in especially short supply include walkers, rollators, shower chairs, and bedside commodes. These essential items help individuals maintain safety, mobility, and independence while recovering from illness or injury, or while aging at home.
Larger equipmentincluding power wheelchairs, mobility scooters, hospital beds, and patient lifts - can be redirected to the Durable Medical Loan Closet at Grace Church in Lititz.

Each student received $5,000 in scholarship monies and a certificate acknowledging their awards. The funds are forwarded to each of the students’ choice of higher education institutions.
“Our post supports the local businesses,” said Mike Martin, first vice commander of Conestoga American Legion Post 662, “as well as the local students.”
“The artifacts we have are from people who have donated them and want them preserved,” said Horning. “We had (the photos) in our artifacts, tracked them down and decided how to use them.”
After acquiring scholarship applications at the guidance office at Garden Spot High School, the students filled them out and returned them to the American Legion. Included in the application process are the students’ official high school transcripts and letters of recommendation.
Conestoga Post 662 has been awarding American Legion scholarships for over 30 years.
“Our committee gets together and reviews all the information that we receive to determine who and how many scholarships will be awarded that year,” said Martin.
The Conestoga American Legion Post 662 has been serving the New Holland community in a variety of ways for more than a century. According to its mission statement, Post 662 “is committed to sponsorship of wholesome programs and events in our community, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, mentoring youth and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.”
Martin, who is also the president of the United Veterans Council of New Holland, served his country for six years as a member of the United States Air Force.
“The American Legion is not just a bar in our community,” said Martin, a resident of Leola. “We are a veteran-run organization that supports our local veterans as well as our community.”

“Every quarter, all the local historical societies get together,” said Horning, “and I think it was the feeling of all of them that something should be done, like, ‘What are you doing for America250?’ Some towns have a larger effort than others.
“Two hundred and fifty years certainly feels like a long time for us in this country,” continued Horning. “It feels like a long time to me until I start thinking my parents were born in the (19)20s and my grandparents were born in the late 1800s. All of a sudden, it doesn’t seem so long.”

“It is a process and not a happening,” said Horning. “You do have to have some inspiration sometimes. I’m not naturally creative. First, you need a theme, and this theme was ready-made. For myself, I was intrigued, and I always think if I’m intrigued maybe some other people (will be) as well.”
During its development, eastern Lancaster County faced many of the same challenges and issues that affected neighboring towns and communities. But there were also issues and factors that made the New Holland area unique.
“The difference between ELANCO and some other communities is that we are agriculturally driven,” said Horning. “Then we became industrial in a way, and some of those industries still support agriculture. A lot of what was happening was related to agriculture.”

“The day will be relaxed and fun,” said Paige Snyder, senior event planner for HOPE International. “People who know each other and people who are meeting for the first time will be gathered around a shared love of golf to support the work of HOPE. There will be images of clients, stories of transformation and plenty of prizes.”
A total of more than 300 participants are expected to attend HOPE International’s golf outing at both venues - mission supporters, community members, sponsors and golf enthusiasts.
“The purpose and goal behind the golf tournament is to raise
funds to help further HOPE’s mission to equip millions of families and entrepreneurs globally by giving them a safe place to save, the opportunity to receive small microfinance loans to start businesses, as well as training to overcome poverty and find hope in Christ,” said Emma McMurray, events fellow for HOPE International.
The golf outing serves as HOPE International’s largest fundraising event. Over the past 25 years, HOPE International has positively affected the lives of 9.5 million people, both directly and indirectly.

Pressure-Gauge Testing Available
Penn State Extension will offer free pressure-gauge testing for pressure canners at multiple Good’s Store locations in June. Canning food with a pressure canner requires an accurate dial gauge to ensure food safety, and regular testing should be performed. Organizers noted that weighted gauges do not require testing.
In-person testing will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, at the Ephrata store, 1127 S. State St., as well as at the Schaefferstown store, 2499 Stiegel Pike (Route 501). Testing will also be available from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, at the East Earl store, 1338 Main St.
Participants also may choose to drop off their pressure gauges for testing
with pickup at a later date. At the Schaefferstown, Ephrata, and Quarryville locations, participants may drop off by Tuesday, June 16, and pick up on or after Thursday, June 18. The following week, participants may drop off by Tuesday, June 23, and pick up on or after Thursday, June 25.
The Quarryville store is located at 333 W. Fourth St. The East Earl location will allow drop-offs by June 17, with pickup on or after Friday, June 19. The following week, participants may drop off by Wednesday, June 24, and pick up on or after Friday, June 26. Testing is free, and registration is not required. Participants only need to bring the dial gauge canner lid or gauge rather than the entire canner.
Motorsports Show Marks 25 Years

“This is just a great community- and family-oriented event, and we encourage everyone to come and check it out,” said Dean Hershey, describing the LCBC Motorsports Show. “There are things for everybody to experience and fun for everyone.”
The show will be held at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free for both guests and vehicle entrants.
The LCBC Motorsports Show will feature antique cars, classics, muscle cars, tuners, motorcycles, street rods, lifted trucks and scale model cars from across the region. This year’s featured theme celebrates pickup trucks, with a dedicated showcase area highlighting everything from restored antiques to custom off-road builds.
“We are one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast,” said Hershey, show organizer. “We average around 12,000 people here, and around 1,500 to 1,800 vehicles.”
This is the 25th anniversary of the motorsports show, which began through the men’s ministry at LCBC.

a couple of grills set up and probably 10 to 20 vehicles,” Hershey recalled. “It was just a fun idea we had, and it’s grown from that.”
He noted that people come from as far away as Florida to participate in the show, adding, “We’ve had people come from 10 different states.”
The show is about more than vehicles, he said. It’s about creating a place where people can come together, enjoy the day with family and friends and experience community in a real and welcoming way.
Food vendors will be on-site, including Dog House Grill, Stacey’s Orangeade, Sittin’ Pickin’ Chickin’, Bricker’s French Fries, Scoops Ice Cream & Grille, Noel’s Café, Funcky Candy X-Press, Kreider Farms and the LCBC café.
Families can also enjoy free activities throughout the day, such as face painting, inflatables, mobile mini golf and RC Monster
Trucks.
One of the day’s highlights will be a special appearance by the Life Lion helicopter team, Hershey said, noting that people will have the opportunity to watch the helicopter land on-site, meet the crew and experience a live takeoff later in the event.
Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories for motorcycles, model cars and other vehicles.
“Our trophies are completely unique to all car shows,” Hershey said. “They are created by one of the guys on our show team in the design of an old gas pump with the show’s specific theme vehicle on it. People that are into car shows, they love our trophies.”
All entrants will also be eligible to win a grand prize NAPA one-of-akind toolbox, which will be awarded by random drawing.
The general public will
have the opportunity to win grand prizes of a Hershey Antique Auto Museum package and a trailer from Keystone Trailers. People can scan a QR code on-site and choose to enter for either prize or for both.
Hershey invites everyone out for the motorsports show.
“You’re going to see some of the coolest vehicles around,” he said. “And if you’re not as into cars, we have tons of stuff for the whole family to enjoy. Originally, this was strictly focused on car show people, but through the years, we’ve grown it and cultivated it to be a family event with lots of cool things for kids to experience.”
In the event of inclement weather, the show will be held on Saturday, June 20, at the same time and location.

to 9 p.m., featuring a pedal tractor pull at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s festivities will commence at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake and sausage breakfast that will run until 9:30 a.m., sponsored by the Intercourse Fire Company, which will also do firetruck demonstrations in the afternoon, preceded by a candy drop at noon. Friday’s food showcase will continue Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring 25 tables of local vendors.
Another highlight of the annual event is the various athletic tournaments, most notably the volleyball tournament. The tournament usually consists of around 70 teams of six people each, and Saturday’s finals always draw a large crowd. The bracket will start at 5 p.m., along with the pickleball tournament, which is rapidly growing in popularity.
