CrossNet Ministries needs help filling more than a few backpacks with back-toschool items. Corrine Horning,
community events and outreach manager with CrossNet, reported that the organization gave out 725 of the 750 backpacks that were prepared for the 2024 Backpack Program. This year,
Horning plans to fill 800 backpacks in anticipation of giving away even more.
To gather the necessary items for the program, up to 15 donation bins are distributed
throughout the community. This year, those bins will be delivered to churches, businesses, and various other local organizations on Thursday, June 19. Horning expected to place collection
bins at Christian Fellowship Church, Ephrata National Bank, Hinkletown Mennonite Church, and Bank of Bird-in-Hand in Bird-in-Hand, among other locations. Requested items are new,

According to Bob Spotts, active member of the New Holland Lions Club since May of 1954, the club was chartered by the Lancaster Lions Club in 1925, after a group of about 25 New Hollanders gathered for the purpose of starting a club. That group chose to become part of Lions Clubs International.
On June 1, the New Holland Lions Club members gathered with Lions district governor Deb Keeports and past district governor Bill Grager for a special ceremony to celebrate 100 years of the club’s community involvement.

When the New Holland Junior Fair Board met for the first time in February, six area teenagers took part. New Holland Fair president Paulene Redding was pleased with the attendance. “The first meeting went great,” she reported. “I was very impressed with the group of kids. They are so outgoing and enthusiastic.”
The New Holland Junior Fair Board is open to students ages 13 to 18. Meetings are held the fourth Thursday of each month
from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the fair building, located at the corner of Franklin Street and Roberts Avenue. “We will provide pizza at the beginning of each meeting because they are running from school and other activities,” stated Redding, who noted that New Holland HVAC is sponsoring the pizza. “We will feed them for the first 20 minutes.”
A few of the members of the board have credentials in the area of agriculture or have volunteered previously with the fair.

the historical society museum. New Holland Mayor Tim Bender and Rep. Keith Greiner were honored guests at the event.
A larger celebration that will be open to the ELANCO community will be held at the New Holland Community Memorial Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Friday, June 20, beginning at 6 p.m. “We will do a candy drop from the Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) ladder truck,” said New Holland Lions Club president Dustin Spencer. “We will have our hot ham and cheese sandwiches (for purchase) at a discounted price.” Spencer noted that hot dogs and beverages will be sold as well. All food items will be available while supplies last. “We will have some of our historical mementos (for attendees to see),” Spencer added. Spencer also stated that representatives and equipment from New Holland Ambulance will be present at the event. He explained that the New Holland Lions Club purchased the first four ambulances for the organization, which was established in 1945. Spencer added that the Lions actually ran the ambulance company until the New Holland Ambulance

sturdy backpacks for students of all ages, along with pens, spiral tablets, pocket folders, rulers, notebook paper, three-ring binders, highlighters, water-based markers, safety scissors, crayons, mechanical pencils, colored pencils, pencil cases, pencil sharpeners, index cards, glue sticks, erasers, and small tissue packets. There is a special need for certain items such as earbuds and, for upper grades, scientific calculators. Financial donations will also be accepted. For those who prefer to shop online for backpacks, an Amazon wish list is available at https://tinyurl .com/ancnwdrb.
Horning noted that CrossNet works with ELANCO School District teachers to know current student needs. “All (lists) for different grade levels have been updated for the current year based on teacher recommendations,” she stated.
Physically filling the backpacks requires about 120 volunteers working weekdays from Tuesday, July 29, through Monday, Aug. 4. “The week before the (distribution) is sort week, and volunteers pack everything into 800 backpacks by grade level,”
Horning explained, noting that volunteers can work as little as one-hour shifts. Individuals interested in volunteering may visit http://www.elancocross. org and look under “News and Stories” for “2025 CrossNet Backpack Program.”
Another 20 volunteers will be needed on distribution day, which is planned for Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the CrossNet Ministries Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland. Backpacks filled with school supplies will be available for all ELANCO School District students entering kindergarten
through grade 12 who are participating in free and reducedcost lunch programs. Proof of residency in the school district, such as an electric or phone bill or a student identification card, will be necessary to receive a free backpack.
In addition to backpacks, other resources will be available such as free haircuts on a first-come, first-served basis. An ELANCO School District representative, CrossNet Ministries staff members, and a Community Action Partnership Parents as Teachers representative will be available to answer questions.
Free food items, which will be provided while supplies last, will include hot dogs, snacks, beverages, and ice cream.
Any leftover backpacks will be given away through churches and the school district on an as-needed basis.

said Aidyn Burton, vice president of the Grassland FFA Chapter and New Holland Junior Fair Board member. “I have grown up with it, and I want to get more involved with my community - especially in the areas of agriculture and education.”
Junior Fair Board member Wynne Kelly, a reporter with Grassland, noted that she has been involved with the New Holland Fair since she was small. “I grew up in New Holland, and I like getting hands-on with the fair,” she said, noting that she works at the stand her church youth group has at the fair.
Junior Board member Kaeden Good, who attends Reach Cyber Charter School, has been volunteering to help with the New Holland Fair tug-of-war competition
for four years. “Kaeden works the buzzer,” explained Redding, who noted that Kaeden’s father, Rodney Good, judges the competition. Kaeden said he would like to see more area youths helping out at the fair and bringing new ideas to the table.
Junior Board member Isabella Jones is a student in the Conestoga Valley School District who first heard about the New Holland Fair through the organization’s fair queen competition. After competing in the contest, she wanted to be more involved in the fair. Other initial members include Genevieve Adamow, 2024 New Holland Fair queen, and Brianna Libell.
One project Redding was hoping the Junior Fair Board members would embrace is the Ag Education Station,
which will be located near the farm show building at the corner of Roberts Avenue and Franklin Street.
“I let them know about the Ag Education Station and how I want them to take part in that,” stated Redding, who added that the board members had already offered to bring over FFA equipment to use. “They are full of ideas,” shared Redding. “They have the energy, and they are ready to go. I think (the Ag Education Station) is going to be a huge success.” In addition to the station, Redding noted that the Junior Board is setting up an Instagram account and that she plans to delegate the designing of the fair book cover to the group.
Redding pointed out that along with pizza, New Holland HVAC will provide T-shirts for the Junior Board members and cover expenses for them to attend youth day at the Pennsylvania Fairs & Showmen Convention held annually in Hershey.
Redding would like to see the group
grow to more than a dozen members.
“(The Junior Board members) would like to be paired with older (New Holland Fair) board members so they can see what they are doing,” said Redding.
Junior Board members would also like to see their number increase. “We want to see more high school-age kids
involved,” shared Burton.
The Junior Fair Board’s Instagram may be followed using the handle @ nh.jr.fair.board. Readers who would like to donate or volunteer for the fair may visit https://newhollandfair.org.
Readers with specific questions may email info@newhollandfair.org or call 717-354-5880.
