It keeps them active. It keeps them social. It keeps them connected to the community. They are taking up causes. They are putting others ahead of themselves. They are making the New Holland area better for everyone.
The women of the New Holland American Legion Auxiliary are starring in a supporting role.
“We help support the veterans and the community,” said Sue Noll, who’s been a member of the auxiliary for
18 years. “Everybody needs support now and then. I don’t care who you are. We do support our veterans and veterans’ causes.”
By always putting its best foot forward, the auxiliary supporting New Holland American Legion Post 662 has sort of taken on a life of its own.
The women’s civic/social club meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month at Post 662, 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland. Each meeting begins with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.
“I enjoy the energy at the meetings with the ladies sharing ideas,” said Noll. “Everybody just works together so well. If you need volunteers, we’re there. We do keep busy.”
Acting as an extension of the American Legion Post 662, the auxiliary engages in a number of community activities and fundraisers throughout the year, some of which are seasonal in nature.
The auxiliary participates in the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage, which visits 13 cemeteries in eastern Lancaster County. The group also

Wisdom occurs when intelligence is aged by experiences. Garden Spot Village (GSV) believes that it can also be taught; that wisdom can be learned - or uncovered.
“Wisdom is discovery,” said Scott Miller, who’s been the chief marketing officer at GSV for 21 years. “When we discover wisdom, we discover universal truths.
They apply to everyone, and they lead to more fulfilling and richer lives. When you release the grudges and hurt you have, it sets you free. It creates a peace beyond understanding. We use our intelligence to reflect on our lives, but wisdom is experiential.”
Miller is also an instructor for GSV’s Wisdom Course, a series of classes designed to help seasoned individuals explore their wisdom,

Randy Royer led a full, rich life. It was the kind of life worthy of a foundation and a scholarship.
“He was always upbeat and outgoing,” said Denise Bender, who serves as a board member on the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation. “If you talked to him every day he would say, ‘Living the dream.’ At work, he got along with contractors and builders. He got things done. He was willing to help anyone.”
The deadline to apply for this year’s edition of the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation scholarship is quickly approaching. Scholarship applications, which can be accessed at www .amesconstructioninc.com/ giving-back, must be received by Friday, June 1.
The scholarships are designed for seniors from Ephrata, Cocalico, Warwick and Garden Spot high schools who are interested in the construction or building field or the automotive industry, and who will be attending a postsecondary institution in the fall of 2026. Included in the application is an essay portion.
A graduate of Ephrata High School who was raised in Akron, Royer was a project manager at Ames Construction for 27 years before his sudden passing in October of 2016.
“We’ve had a wide variety of recipients,” said Bender. “In the first year, an Ephrata student Randy had coached in youth soccer received it. Last year,

On the surface, there is no obvious connection between medicine and music. That is, until you realize that music goes with anything, or everything.
Auscultation Brass is a collection of healing artists and a group of musical physicians.
But at one point, I told my staff, ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to play classical music.’ What I found was that it wasn’t a distraction; it helped people concentrate.

“I think there’s a part in our brains that, when music hits our ears, it becomes very soothing,” said Dr. Jerry Rothacker, the scheduler and main contact for Auscultation Brass. “For years, when I did surgery, I didn’t allow music in the operating room. I didn’t want it to be a distraction.

“What I was listening to wasn’t what my staff was listening to when they were driving home,” he added. “That’s the beauty of music.”
Auscultation Brass is a Lancaster-based band made up of medical professionals - nurses and mostly doctors. Medicine is their profession, and music is their interest, but they are passionate about both.
“Auscultation means to listen,” said Rothacker, a

retired orthopedic surgeon and a tuba-playing resident of East Hempfield. “It’s like a doctor listening to your lungs and heart with a stethoscope. That’s Auscultation. We had a little discussion when the band was first formed. Someone came up with Auscultation, and we said, ‘That’s it.’”
Auscultation Brass is directed by Dr. Bob Belser, an ear, nose and throat man, while Dr. Michael Chambers, a maxillofacial surgeon, plays the trombone and serves as the group’s musical librarian. Chambers is joined on the trombone by Dr. Marguerite Duane, a family doctor. Dr. Tom Andersen, a retired family physician, plays the tuba.
Trumpet players include Dr. Dan Diehl, a retired family doctor; Dr. Andy Lutzkanin, a family physician; and Dr. Bill Roberts, a retired family doctor. Intensive Care Unit nurse Kirby Strohmaier plays the French horn, as does Dr. Bill Lovett, a practicing family doctor.
Those health professionals have practiced medicine in local hospitals like Lancaster General, performed as specialists at places like Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster or been on their own in private practices.
“I think some of the attraction is the discipline it takes to learn to play an instrument,” said Rothacker. “You don’t just pick it up. You’ve got to work at it every day. As you get older, it becomes a mental challenge.”

Auscultation Brass specializes in the genres of classical, light classical, pop, marches and movie-themed music. Over the last four decades, the members have grown as musicians, the group has evolved as a band and Auscultation Brass’ library has ballooned to more than 300 pieces of music.
“We try to practice once a week,” said Rothacker. “It’s been Sunday evenings for 40 years. At one time, that was the night that was the calmest, with medical emergencies and young kids. The thing I’m most proud of is that we’ve been able to evolve. When we first started, it was fairly basic stuff. We’re on to some more difficult music,

The Bird-in-Hand chapter of Referral Partners Plus (RPP) has announced the election of Stephanie Good as chapter president for the 2026 term. Good, a resident of Lancaster County and owner of Servant Heart Virtual Assistant, stepped into the role with a vision to strengthen the local small business ecosystem through intentional networking and traditional Lancaster County hospitality.
Referral Partners Plus is a Lancaster-based nonprofit professional networking organization dedicated to helping small business owners grow through industry-exclusive referrals, professional development, and community support. The Bird-in-Hand chapter serves eastern Lancaster County, including Leola, New Holland, Intercourse, Gordonville, Gap, and Paradise.
RPP has a dual focus on business growth and local philanthropy. Within each chapter, only one professional from each specific field - for example, one certified public accountant, one real estate agent, and one residential contractor - is permitted to join. This rule is designed to eliminate internal competition and ensure that members can share leads and insights with total confidence. In RPP’s philanthropic model, organizational funds are returned to the individual chapters to be gifted to other local nonprofit

organizations.
The Bird-in-Hand chapter was established in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through shifting markets and changing times, the members have built a community that thrives on collaboration, celebrates local wins, and tackles challenges together.
The group meets each Monday from 8 to 9:15 a.m. at GreAT Signs, 338 N. Ronks Road, Birdin-Hand. The in-person gatherings provide a structured yet relaxed environment where business owners from many industries team up to drive local economic growth. Under Good’s leadership, the chapter has initiated plans for strategic growth, aiming to expand its membership to include missing local industries and enhance the guest experience for visiting professionals.
Local professionals who are interested in learning more may visit one of the weekly meetings. Guests may attend up to three meetings for free before deciding on membership.
The chapter is currently seeking to fill open seats in industries such as IT support, marketing, hospitality/tourism, and various local trades. For more information or to make reservations for a meeting, contact Good at stephanie@servant heartva.com or visit https://referralpartners plus.com/bird-in-hand/.

develop it and harness its power. The Wisdom Course is taught in a conference room on the campus of Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
“The purpose of the Wisdom Course is to help older adults review their life stories and harvest their wisdom from within,” said Miller. “We introduce people to wisdom, and we talk elderhood. Elders carry the traditions and the stories of our culture and pass them along to younger people.”
The Wisdom Course consists of a series of threehour sessions presented from 9 a.m. to noon on the third Friday of every month, from May through the end of the calendar year.
The learning sessions include instruction, writing, interaction, exercises designed to inspire reflection and the sharing of classmate stories. Near the end of the Wisdom Course, participants travel to Elizabethtown College to share their stories with college students and to learn their stories in turn.
The Wisdom Course is free to attend.
“We don’t have a map for the second half of our lives. The Wisdom Course provides the map,” said Miller, a resident of Lititz. “From youth to 35, we’re learning, we’re trying to figure things out. From 35 to 50 is midlife, and at 50 people have a tendency to look over the horizon and ask, ‘What’s next?’ That’s the ideal time to step into our elderhood, unpack our lives and live them in balance.”
The Wisdom Course’s

curriculum is built around six key developmental elements - the constructed world, the concept of objectification, the process of internalization, absolutization, renovation and rejuvenation.
“We explain this framework to people, and we have people write about portions of their lives and significant people in their lives,” said Miller. “People begin to explore their memories. We do this exercise called ‘Digging in the Basement,’ where people explore the boxes they have left closed. A lot of wisdom comes from suffering and hard times in our lives.
“People who have harvested their wisdom can share it with younger people,” added Miller. “The older generation, that’s where the wisdom is held. Everyone will listen to a good story, and then you will draw your own conclusions. The message is, ‘Everything does work out; you’ve just got to ride things out and do the best you can.’”
The Wisdom Course’s class size is limited to 16 participants. The course is open to residents of GSV and members of the community.
“They’re the people who want to contribute to the lives of others and society at large,” said Miller. “They want to continue to contribute. They’re people seeking wisdom. It’s available to everyone, but we’ve got to seek it. It doesn’t just happen.”
Elizabethtown College professor Conrad Kanagy was instrumental in the founding of the Wisdom Course in 2022. Kanagy instructed the initial Wisdom Course, then taught Miller and GSV pastor Karyn Nancarvis how to teach it.

“Garden Spot Communities is a fabulous place to live because we create these opportunities to live with purpose,” said Miller. “This is one of the ways we do that. I’ve been a student of wisdom for the last 20 years. There are wise people in the world, but we don’t embrace wisdom. If we don’t, we just go through life. (Embracing wisdom) really is life changing.” For additional information, go to www.garden spotvillage.org.

one of the students who received it was going overseas to go to school. We ask the applicants what made them passionate to go into the field.”
After applications are received, they are reviewed to ensure requirements have been met. Then the members of the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation board meet and apply a rubrics system to determine the recipients of onetime scholarships between $1,000 and $5,000.
Last year, the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation awarded eight scholarships to local high school seniors.
“A $5,000 scholarship for a school like Thaddeus Stevens is a good amount,” said Bender, a resident of Ephrata.
The scholarship is funded through the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation’s
annual golf outing, titled “Living the Dream.” This year, the fundraising event will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall.
“We want to give away money,” said Bender. “We do very well when we do our golf tournament because we have very generous donors. We want people to know about the scholarships.”
The Randy Royer Memorial Foundation and its scholarship were established not long after Royer’s passing. Over the last nine years, the foundation has awarded a total of $93,000 in scholarships to more than 21 local students.
The board that oversees the Randy Royer Memorial Foundation is made up of some of Royer’s family members and friends.
“I think it’s going very well,” said Bender.

at the time. It’s about giving back and helping out the community.”
The auxiliary conducts two craft shows each year, in the fall and in the spring, both inside the banquet hall at the American Legion Post. The ladies also stage bingos twice a year at the legion, position collection boxes near entrances at the legion and hold periodic sub sales.
On every Saturday before Mother’s Day, the auxiliary holds a spa day at the banquet hall. The auxiliary also conducts a yearly fundraising overseas trip for American Legion Post 662 members.
“With these (women) members, there’s a camaraderie,” said Noll. “We get along well. We’re working for a main cause.”
Some of the causes supported by the auxiliary are the Veterans Court Community Partnership, which assists veterans challenged by addiction or mental health issues, and the work of the local nonprofit CrossNet Ministries. The group also funds scholarships at Garden Spot High School
and distributes gifts to families in need at Christmas time.
“I’d guess that not everyone knows about the work we do,” said Noll. “But we want to get the word out there. We’re always looking for members to help. The only requirement for joining is that you have to have a connection to someone in the service.”
Post 662’s auxiliary membership numbers around 600 women, more than 20 of whom attend meetings regularly. The ladies reside in New Holland, Leola, Ephrata, Gap and other communities across Lancaster County.
“They’re ladies who really, truly care about veterans and want to give back to veterans and their community,” said Noll. “They’re caring individuals. We are a fun, community-minded group.”
The New Holland American Legion Post 662 was established more than a century ago, and the auxiliary came into existence not long afterwards. For additional information, go to www.new hollandlegion662.org.

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will commemorate 50 years of Conrail during Conrail Days on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31.
Conrail launched on April 1, 1976, stepping in to rebuild the bankrupt northeastern freight rail network. The railroad operated through the heavily populated northeast and served many of the nation’s largest cities, from New York and Philadelphia to Chicago. Its legacy endures in the infrastructure it restored, the industries it reconnected, and the railfan community it inspired.
Several special activities are planned for Conrail Days. The Conrail Historical Society will hold a business meeting on May 30 at 10:15 a.m., and Conrail CEO Brian Gorton and Conrail Historical Society president Brock Kerchner will provide remarks at 11 a.m. Additional programs will include “I Carried a Camera at Work” by Larry DeYoung at noon and “The Heart of Conrail” by Doug Lilly at 2 p.m. On May 31, the presentations will be “Modeling Conrail” by Ed Kapuscinski at 12:30 p.m. and “Office Car Special” by Wes Reminder at 2 p.m. A number of the museum’s historic engines and railroad cars will be open to explore, and exhibits and artifacts from the Conrail Historical Society’s archives will be on display. The Capital PenNScalers and Lebanon Valley Rail groups will have operating model train layouts, and artist Peter Lerro will be on hand to show and sell his work. Museum visitors also may enjoy the Pennsylvania Middle Division operating HO-scale layout and the “Seeing Double: Pennsylvania’s Industrial Revolution in 3D” exhibit in the second-floor gallery.
Conrail Days activities are included in the regular museum admission fee. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.rrmuse umpa.org or on the day of the event at the door. For more information, visit the aforementioned website or call 717-687-8628.
