Summer Lunch Program Schedules Start Date my Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, is looking forward to providing nourishment to ELANCO School District students through the 2021 free summer lunch program, which will start on Monday, June 7. Marburger would like to hear back from those who wish to participate by Tuesday, June 1. Marburger also detailed some changes in this year’s program, which will run through Thursday, Aug. 26. “We will do a two-day-a-week pickup,” she explained. “On Monday, students will receive three lunches and on Thursdays two lunches.” Marburger added that the CrossNet pickup location will be at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, from 11 a.m. to noon, and it will be by drive-by or walkup. Because July 4 is on a Sunday this year, CrossNet will be closed on Monday, July 5, and the lunch pickup will be held on Tuesday, July 6. Additional pickup locations will be

Additional snack items will be included as well when available. The program is open to students ages 1 to 21 who are registered and attending school in the ELANCO School District and who are eligible for free and reduced-cost school lunches. Marburger noted that the organization is grateful to the community organizations that help the program with donations, including Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and

Musser Foundation Supports Families Of Children With Cancer

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of See Project Lifesaver pg 3

When Akron resident Jeff Musser was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1999 at the age of 42, doctors prescribed several months of chemotherapy with the possibility of a bone marrow transplant following remission. “At that time, insurance didn’t cover bone marrow transplants,” recalled Musser. “A bunch of my friends got together, and they raised about $35,000 for me.”

After Musser underwent 28 months of chemotherapy, doctors at The Johns Hopkins Hospital decided not to perform the bone marrow transplant. “When I got well after two years, I had $35,000,” said Musser, who also had a heightened awareness of the situations faced by the families of children with the same type of cancer he had. “My cancer was a childhood leukemia,” he said. “For kids it’s 80% curable, but for adults it’s 20% curable.”
