Looking for a few good veterans

Memorial Day Pilgrimage to continue

“We decorate 19 cemeteries, and we shoot over 12,” shared United Veterans Council (UVC) of New Holland member Mike Martin, one of the organizers of the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimage. With the help of area Boy Scout troop members, UVC will plant flags on the graves of more than 1,600 veterans

on Saturday, May 24. The caretaker of each of the cemeteries to receive flags coordinates the decorating efforts.

On Monday, May 26, the Ceremonial Units of the UVC of New Holland will conduct the 103rd annual pilgrimage to cemeteries in eastern Lancaster County. Units will form at 6:30 a.m. at the American Legion, 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland, and will leave at 6:45 a.m. to conduct services

at 12 area cemeteries, followed by a brief ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in the New Holland Community Memorial Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street.

All area veterans are invited to participate in the ceremonies. Members of the UVC would like to see younger veterans get involved in helping to preserve the tradition of the pilgrimage. UVC is open to new members, but membership is not necessary

to participate in the pilgrimage.

“You don’t have to be a member (of UVC), just be a veteran,” pointed out Mike, who noted that the number of veterans taking part in the traditional journey has dwindled. Area veterans who wish to participate in the pilgrimage are asked to call Lemar Martin at 717-669-0517.

“We like to know ahead of time to schedule color guard and a firing squad,” explained Mike.

In 2024, Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager for CrossNet Ministries, predicted that the organization’s summer lunch program would provide a noontime meal each summer weekday for 240 ELANCO School District students. Her forecast was almost a bullseye. “We did roughly 240 a day,” stated Marburger. “We (served) 12,800 lunches last summer.”

This year, when the program starts on Monday, June 2, lunches will be available at two locations on Mondays and Thursdays. Lunches, which are for people ages 1 to 21 living within the ELANCO area, are offered to individuals who receive free and reduced-cost meals during the school year. Lunches may be picked up at the CrossNet Youth Center, 110 W. Franklin St., New Holland, from 11 a.m. to noon. Lunches at Pine Grove Church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville, may be picked up from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

Marburger is asking for parents to sign up students who will participate by Monday, May 26, so she can have enough lunches prepared for the first day of the program. Although new sign-ups are accepted all

Rock Ford to host chamber ensemble

Historic Rock Ford will welcome the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble for “Baroque on the Piazza” at the General Edward Hand Mansion on Tuesday, June 3, at 6 p.m. The ensemble will present Vivaldi’s Double Trumpet Concerto in C Major, as well as works by Handel, Telemann, Corelli, J.S. Bach and more.

The Ephrata Chamber Ensemble was started by local harpsichordist Faith Martin of Ephrata. After studying the harpsichord for several years, Martin realized that she most enjoyed using this instrument in collaboration with other musicians, which led her to organize the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble.

Her sister Mercy on the violin, her brother Clayton on the cello, and several musician friends and vocal soloists will join her to bring this program of live music to Rock Ford. Guests to Historic Rock Ford may recognize Faith and Mercy from their performances during the museum’s annual Yuletide event for the past three years.

The event will open at 6 p.m., and the music will begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be a short intermission.

Seating on the lawn in front of the piazza of the Hand Mansion is on a firstcome, first-served basis. Guests should bring their own chairs. Blankets are not recommended so that everyone may have a good view of the ensemble on the piazza. A general admission fee will be charged per ticket. When reserving tickets, guests have the option of adding on a charcuterie box

from Graze Catering for an additional fee. A gluten-free option is also available. The boxes include crackers, mixed nuts, a variety of meats, two cheeses, grapes, berries, honey, jam and a chocolate treat.

At the event, wine by the glass will be available for purchase by guests age 21 and older. Identification will be required.

Tickets may be purchased at www.HistoricRockFord .org/special-events. Historic Rock Ford, located at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, is comprised of the General Edward Hand Mansion and the John J. Snyder, Jr. Gallery. It is owned and operated by the Rock Ford Foundation, a private, notfor-profit corporation.

The fourth annual IronLeg Corp. Golf Outing will be held Saturday, May 24, at Four Seasons Golf Club, 949 Church St., Landisville.

The cost to participate includes the green fee, use of a cart, bagels in the morning, lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages.

The registration deadline is Friday, May 23. Golfers should check in at 7 a.m., and the outing will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. To register for the event or make a monetary donation, go to https:// ironleg.org.

There will be prizes for the top two teams in the four-man scramble competition and opportunities to win a prize by scoring a hole-in-one on any par 3. One hole will offer the chance to win a car with an ace.

There will be a silent auction of authenticated sports memorabilia, including framed boxing trunks signed by both Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, a framed Saquon Barkley Philadelphia Eagles jersey, and an item signed by star Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. Iron-Leg merchandise will also be for sale.

Iron-Leg Corp., a 501(c) (3) charity, is a three-person operation. Longtime friends Matthew Millhouse, Iron-Leg’s president, and vice president Sean Laukhuff founded the organization in 2021. Secretary/treasurer Ashley Kimmich joined in 2024.

The group’s mission is to help purchase high-level prosthetics for people from ages 1 through 18. “We help cover what insurance does not,” said Matthew, who lives in New Danville. “We help kids get better prosthetics while they’re young instead of after they’re done growing.”

Iron-Leg has generated a total of approximately $60,000 in the first three tournaments. The proceeds from this year’s golf outing will benefit a 7-year-old girl from Massachusetts named Abby. Abby, who will be at the event, was injured in a lawn mowing accident when she was 3.

The cause is especially meaningful for Matthew,

Iron-Leg Corp.’s Sean Laukhuff (left), Ashley Kimmich (middle), and Matthew Millhouse at Four Seasons Golf Club

whose son, Parker, was born without a right leg. Parker, 12, is doing well and playing baseball this spring. Matthew decided he wanted to assist families who are in a similar situation, and Sean eagerly agreed to help. Sean, who resides in Reading, is following his uncle’s lead: Ken Laukhuff answered a mother’s call for help when her son’s last wish was to talk from one truck to another on a CB radio. That charitable act was the genesis for what is now known as the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy.

Kimmich, from Millersville, was friends with Sean and gladly stepped in to help with the Iron-Leg Corp. after her kids graduated from high school. “I was always involved with booster clubs and love helping kids with sports,” she said. “What (Sean and Matthew) do is really touching. For kids who want to run or play a sport, they need better prosthetics, and it’s

sad if a (child) can’t play a sport because their parents can’t afford it. So I decided to join their team.”

Iron-Leg Corp is grateful for its sponsors, including Lancaster Nissan, Yale Electric, Aerotek, Lynch Financial LLC, The Exterior Company (TEC), Skywalker Electric, and Dent Techs.

A trademark of Iron-Leg events is a huge American flag. “We’re a lot of fun. Anybody can say that, but we go the extra mile,” Matthew said. Matthew served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1995 to 2001. In 2019, he enlisted in the Air Force National Guard and continues to serve his country. Sean was in the United States Army from 1993 to 2005.

The trio shows no signs of slowing down. Iron-Leg held its first football game last fall, and another is planned for 2026. The IronLeg dance is also slated to return next year.

“We know this is the rest of our lives,” Matthew said.

About 200 volunteers will be needed to help make the program a success this year.

summer long, the program needs a count to be prepared for the first day. Students who do not have transportation to one of the pickup sites should contact their school principal or call CrossNet at 717-355-2454 for assistance.

Bag lunches will include a main food item, fruit, chips, a dessert, and a beverage. Additional snack items will be included when available. The program is in need of individually packaged snack items, such as granola bars and individual cereal cups, along with supplies like resealable sandwich-size plastic bags and foil sheets, which are utilized when hot items are included in the lunches.

Marburger also recommended that those wishing

to give visit https://elanco cross.org/join-our-team/ current-needs and click on “CrossNet Ministries’ Amazon Wish List.”

Marburger said she is thankful to local businesses that donate to the lunch program, including Yoder’s Country Market, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Shady Maple Farm Market, Sharp Shopper Grocery Outlet, Dutch-Way Farm Market, Hoober Produce, Four Seasons Produce, and Herr Foods Inc.

The seasonal program requires more than 200 volunteers to pack and deliver lunches and to pick up donations. Volunteer hours will vary. Those who wish to volunteer may visit https://signup.com/go/ xZjJESx.

Tips for road trips

Options abound for summer vacations. People may take a cruise, fly to a resort, or go camping. They may also take a driving vacation - otherwise known as a road trip - which can reduce the cost of travel and may amplify the fun. Following a few tips can make for a safe, enjoyable, and memorable trip.

If people will be relying on their personal vehicle, they should ensure that everything is in good working order before the trip. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offers a Recalls Look-up Tool at www.nhtsa.gov/ recalls so people can check if their vehicle has any critical safety issues. It is also best to make sure that tires are in good shape and filled to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. People should double check all fluids and get an oil change if it is close to the time the

vehicle will require service. Vacationers should consider what their destination will be. It may be a national park, a beach, an amusement park, or a music festival, or they may even decide to go on a road trip without a predetermined destination in mind. A handful of smaller stops can make for a fun, spontaneous trip. People should choose a destination that suits their budget.

When planning a trip, people may consider a travel club membership. Membership in programs like AAA or AARP enable members to get discounts on various travel services, such as car rentals or hotel stays. Members may be eligible for percentages off on meals at popular restaurant chains. Membership in these programs may help to save money. It is a good idea to plan

Philanthropy is universal and timeless. The act of giving back is not bound by race, ethnicity or color.

The Aastha Horizons Fund is managed and operated by a group made up of predominantly Lancaster County Indian-Asian Americans. Its mission is to help everyone in an attempt to make their home a better place to live.

“My favorite part is the philanthropy,” said Manjeet Kaur, one of the founders of the Aastha Horizons Fund and a resident of Manheim Township. “We’ve been given so much by Lancaster County, and now we want to give back. Everybody does it for different reasons. I saw my family and dad (give back). When you see enough of it, it feels like your duty.”

“Giving begins at home,” said Reema Parikha, an advisory group member who resides in East Hempfield Township. “I feel like this fund is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s amazing to see how these funds are used.”

Overseen by an advisory group and conducted in association with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), the Aastha Horizons Fund is a giving circle that raises funds through donations and distributes them to Lancaster County nonprofits via a grant application process. The fund’s advisory group meets on a regular basis but does not operate from a brick-and-mortar office.

Translated from Indian culture, Aastha means faith, belief, trust and hope for a better tomorrow.

“Aastha is a very simple word,” said Kaur. “As humans, we can approach people who are looking at the dawn and give them a little bit of extra hope for a better tomorrow. It’s what we want to do. We want to make a difference. We want (the fund) to continue to grow.”

Aastha Horizons Fund’s grant process is initiated with advisory group members inviting local nonprofits to apply for grants. Once the grant applications

are received, the advisory members meet as a group, discuss the nonprofits’ merits and needs and then vote on the applications.

Before a final approval is granted, the advisory group interviews officials of the nonprofits requesting the grants.

“We try to focus on organizations that are less heard of,” said Nishit Trivedi, a member of the advisory group who resides in West Hempfield Township.

“It’s not just the money,” said Rao Sankarmanchi, an advisory group member and a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We’re looking for people to partner with as volunteers. We want to help out in any way we can.”

Typically, the Aastha Horizons Funds awards grants in the $2,500 range. In 2024, the fund awarded five grants to local nonprofits, and over the course of its three-year existence, the Aastha Horizons Funds has granted more than 10 awards, including ones to Power Packs, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, the Turkish Philanthropy Funds, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Milagro House, Aaron’s Acres, Reach Out and Read of Lancaster County, Lancaster Science Factory and Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services.

“As we’re going through the grant process, the organizations are getting to know us, and they’re sharing about us,” said Rakesh Popli, a member of the advisory group and a resident of West Lampeter Township. “In three years, I feel like we’ve accomplished some significant achievements.”

“I think the word is getting out (about the Aastha Horizons Fund’s work),” said founding member Deepa Balepur, who resides in West Hempfield Township.

Aastha Horizons Funds raises money through events and private donations, some of which originate from the members of

early. Spring and summer are popular times to travel, particularly during weeks when children are off from school, and it is important to book campgrounds or other lodging well in advance if the travel plan includes visiting popular places like national parks and other tourist-heavy areas.

People should be realistic about mileage goals. Some drivers may be on autopilot and fall into commuting habits of trying to get from one place to another in the least amount of time. Slowing down to take in the scenery can make a trip more enjoyable. AARP also advises

people to be mindful of the personal needs and abilities of drivers. Sharing the load of driving can make it possible to cover more miles in less time.

Travelers are encouraged to stop at a few quirky or local attractions. Although a stop at a popular fast food chain might save time, it may not offer the same memories as visiting a local haunt or roadside attraction.

Road trips can make vacationing possible for people who find the cost of traveling by other means prohibitive, and several strategies can improve the experience.

Menu options for Memorial Day barbecues

Though Memorial Day precedes the summer solstice by several weeks, the three-day weekend in late May is widely viewed as the unofficial start of summer. Backyard barbecues have become a popular way to commemorate Memorial Day weekend, and the following are some ideal dishes to offer this Memorial Day weekend.

-Salads: Weather is unpredictable, but conditions tend to be warm by Memorial Day weekend. That means some guests will be looking for lighter fare that won’t make

them feel too sluggish in the late-spring sun. Salads can fit the bill for hungry guests who want to satisfy their cravings without feeling bloated. Tricolor pasta salad, antipasto, and tossed salad make for great appetizers that pack a nutritional punch as well. Of course, don’t forget staples like macaroni and potato salads, which are often best served alongside grilled fare.

-Smoked foods: Smoking meats has become wildly popular in recent years.

Memorial Day weekend barbecue hosts can consider the

growing affinity for smoked foods and offer something up from their own smoker. There’s no shortage of foods that can be smoked, from whole chickens to brisket to desserts, and guests may appreciate a smoky taste of something different this Memorial Day weekend.

-Hot dogs and hamburgers: Though experimentation and unique offerings are sure to be appreciated, it’s also important to offer guests some traditional backyard barbecue staples. Perhaps nothing fits that

bill better than hot dogs and hamburgers.

-Water: It’s easy to overlook when the focus is on food, but water is a necessity at Memorial Day weekend barbecues. Water can help people remain hydrated and cool off if temperatures spike, and it also can help adults avoid overindulging in alcohol.

Memorial Day weekend is a festive time, and backyard barbecue hosts can add to the fun by serving foods tailor-made for such celebrations.

There will be a limited number of pressure flaking kits, which include antler, stone, and a leather hand pad, available for an additional fee. The rock will be supplied. Attendees should bring their own chair and may also bring lunch and drinks. For more information and to register by Friday, May 30, call Robert Kapp at 223-268-1264.

Texting service available to turnpike travelers

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers realtime communication during unexpected traffic backlogs.

The free service is available 24/7 and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlogs. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, travelers may text “info” to 47676. Users are walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once the information is confirmed, the service provides automated updates every 15 to 20 minutes, including location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times, and roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate the service

for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.

In June, Paul Miller’s Law will go into effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.

The concept for the text messaging service originated from the PA Turnpike’s annual employee innovation challenge, styled after the “Shark Tank” reality competition. The idea was for all customers to be able to text for incident updates when stuck in a backlog.

This service complements existing customer assistance offerings such as *11 and 511. Drivers can also call 911 at any time for life-threatening emergencies; criminal activity; and immediate police, fire, or EMS assistance.
