Time for United Veterans Council Annual Pilgrimage

Memorial Day is an important day for everyone, and rightfully so. But for fellow veterans like Mike Martin, it’s even more important.

Mike, who served in the United States Navy for six years, is the president of the United Veterans Council of New Holland and heavily involved with the the New Holland American Legion post and the New Holland VFW post.

“I’m very proud to say I’m president of the United Veterans Council of New Holland,” said Mike. “I put in a lot of time for the veterans in the area.”

In his role as president, Mike

In Ephrata, the Living Room is a church, the Workshop is part of the church’s community outreach and the Mustard Seed is a food truck.

In this appetizing tale, the moral of the story is that the smallest seed can grow into a great tree. All you need is love.

“The concept of the mustard seed is giving a small amount to the Lord and allowing Him to grow it into what He wants it to be,” said Janina Knowles, one of the leaders of the

They call themselves “Misfits.”

But that is not a complete representation of who they are and what they are all about. They could also call themselves “Supporters,” “Heroes” or “Sympathizers.”

“We are a group of people who have been impacted by cancer in some way, either as caregivers, survivors, or we have friends who have gone through the fight,” said Sharon Groff, the Misfits on a Mission team captain. “When we started, most teams were affiliated with a school group, church group, a business or family members. We were a group of people who wanted to do something to give back in honor or in memory of loved ones. Thus, we were a bunch of misfits who had no affiliation, but were on a mission in the fight against cancer.”

Misfits on a Mission is an independent, six-member Relay for Life team that will be out in full force at Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS), 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday, June 12, from 3 to 11 p.m., when the American Cancer Society stages its popular local fight against cancer. The volunteer-led, fundraising and awareness-raising Relay for Life brings people together from all over Lancaster County who have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer.

Lancaster County’s annual Relay for Life will feature local teams and individuals running or walking around CVHS’ track in support of loved ones who have battled cancer and will include music, kids’ activities,

At PA CareerLink, Lancaster County Goes to Work

On average, Americans spend 15 years and three months of their natural lives working, a total of some 90,000 hours. For some people, a job is work. For some individuals, employment is a career.

PA CareerLink Lancaster County

caters to both groups of people and helps individuals to navigate this critical portion of their lives.

“It depends on the individual,” said Chris Roggenbaum, who’s been the site administrator at PA CareerLink Lancaster County for three years. “Some people may say they have a job. For me, my job is part of my career. It’s part of my path. Some people are looking for jobs. A lot of times, people put their identities into whether they have a job or a career.”

An arm of the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, PA CareerLink Lancaster County, which is located at 1046 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, is a job center that provides locals opportunities to improve themselves financially, to enhance their lives and to self-actualize. PA CareerLink Lancaster County’s hours of operation are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“A lot of people come to us thinking we’re the unemployment office, but we are not,” said Roggenbaum. “Our goal is to get individuals back to work or further their skills for their current job. We’re here to help people enter or re-enter the local work force. There are a variety of ways to do that.”

CareerLink Lancaster County’s

PA CareerLink Lancaster County offers self-service job searches, case management services, mock interviews, résumé assistance, training, workshops and youth and adult programming. PA CareerLink also hosts job fairs and works with local employers to sponsor job fairs.

“I used to have a boss who told me, ‘Hey, a job or having a career is an important part of people’s identities,’” said Roggenbaum. “When you meet people for the first time, it’s not too far into the conversation when you ask them, ‘What do you do for a living?’”

PA CareerLink collaborates with numerous Lancaster County employers, who can post current openings on the organization’s website free of charge. PA CareerLink also works with human service agencies, manufacturing agencies, staffing agencies and the Lancaster

County Assistance Office.

It has its finger on the pulse of the employment community.

More than 10,000 people pass through the doors of 1046 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, every single year.

“A lot of these people have lost their jobs or need some sort of assistance,” said Roggenbaum. “We have individuals looking for training. We have veterans or spouses of veterans who have relocated to the area. We have people with disabilities. It’s a variety of people in different phases of their career journeys, from first jobs to starting over.”

The current unemployment rate in Lancaster County stands at 3.3%, well below Pennsylvania’s rate of 4.3%. Among the top Lancaster employers are Lancaster General Hospital, Mutual Assistance Group, the county of Lancaster and Giant Food Stores.

“One of the things we’re proud of in Lancaster is that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state, and that’s consistent,” said Roggenbaum. “We’re usually below the state rate. Lancaster County is bustling. We have a lot going on here.”

6:30 a.m., will process to 13 cemeteries in eastern Lancaster County, where members of the United Veterans Council of New Holland will perform services to honor the veterans interred there.

This year will mark the 104th time that the United Veterans Council of New Holland has embarked on its local pilgrimage.

“It’s a busy morning, and it’s mixed emotions,” said Mike. “When you’re marching, you almost get goose bumps seeing all the people and the decorated graves. It’s a somber moment.”

After the United Veterans Council marches into each cemetery, prayers are spoken, flowers are placed on graves, a 21-gun salute is fired, and “Taps” is played, before the members march out. The New Holland Band will be on hand to play the national anthem and the official song of each branch of the military service.

Others participating include members of American Legion support groups and auxiliaries.

The United Veterans Council will gather at the New Holland American Legion Post at 6:30 a.m. and depart at 6:45 a.m. Stops included in the pilgrimage include 7 a.m. at Ranck’s United Methodist Church, 700 Ranck Road, New Holland; 7:15 a.m. at Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church, 4833 Division Highway, East Earl; 7:30 a.m. at Bridgeville Evangelical, 5971 Division Highway, Narvon; 8 a.m. at Bowmansville Memorial Park, 155 Church St., Narvon; 8:30 a.m. St. John’s Center Lutheran Church, 432 Reading Road, East Earl; 8:50 a.m. at Terre Hill Memorial Park,

Main St., New Holland; and 11:20 a.m. at New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. There will be no program at the park.

“When we arrive at each cemetery, I will go and find each caretaker,” said Mike. “I’ll talk to a member of the veteran’s family whose grave we’ll be firing shots over, and I’ll give them my condolences. I’m the representative of the veterans council.”

A total of 1,670 American flags will be placed by the veterans council on eastern Lancaster County graves on Memorial Day. That number includes 40 for veterans interred at seven smaller cemeteries that are not part of the pilgrimage.

The ceremonial rituals performed at the cemeteries are typically well attended. At some, as many as 100 grateful citizens attend.

“The people participating want to be there to honor and respect the veterans,” said Mike, a resident of Leola. “They all look forward to it. People really appreciate it when we come out to their cemetery.”

Other members of the United Veterans Council are Alan Knoll, Ron Folker, and Lamar Martin, all residents of New Holland.

“We’re here to honor and pay respect to the veterans who have gone before us,” said Mike. “Hopefully, people will be able to attend to see what we do and what it’s all about. We want to keep this going.”

“The vibe at Relay is upbeat and fun. It’s a family event,” said Groff. “Everyone is welcome to attend; you do not have to be part of a team to come out and enjoy the activities. Lanterns and luminarias are lit around the track in remembrance or in honor of someone who has (battled) or is battling cancer.”

Living Room’s Workshop. “It’s allowing Him to turn it into something beautiful.”

“(The Mustard Seed is) different from other food trucks in that it’s giving people an opportunity to provide their best with a little bit of resources,” said Andrea Holder, one of the leaders of the Living Room’s Workshop. “The focus for us is to give people a chance. It might look like a regular food truck from the outside. We want these people to feel useful. I think that’s what’s different about it.”

Located at 409 N. State St., Ephrata, inside the old Doneckers building, the Living Room’s Workshop has been diligently preparing the Mustard Seed for its mission of mercy. The food truck’s grand opening will be celebrated from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, when it will be parked along the sidewalk outside the church.

Patrons will be afforded an opportunity to park in the church’s lot.

“We’ve been getting feedback, and we’re trying to perfect things,” said Holder. “Our success relies on people knowing about it, coming out and enjoying it.”

The Mustard Seed’s menu will feature taco bowls, chicken kabobs, stuffed mushrooms and brisket sandwiches. The Mustard Seed is an inspected food truck with a fully equipped commercial kitchen that includes a convection oven, fryers, a flattop grill, a refrigerator and a sink.

“Right now, we’re trying to get the word out,” said Knowles. “We have used it on trial runs. We’ve been cleaning it, preparing it and getting it ready to use. We’re testing our recipes. We definitely have room to grow, but we’re trying not to bite off more than we can chew.”

The Mustard Seed’s mission is to serve local people in need, some of whom are homeless, some of whom have mental challenges and some of whom are just struggling in general. Some of those people in need are serving as volunteers as part of the Mustard Seed’s operations.

“They are people who need a hand up, not a handout,” said Knowles, a resident of Ephrata. “The goal is to provide a sense of belonging and purpose, with the hopes to earn some income. Maybe this could develop into a job.”

“We’re also doing an organic garden on the side that’s going to provide ingredients for the food truck,” said Holder, a resident of Bowmansville. “It’s pretty much everything you can grow - onions, garlic, herbs, mint.”

Following its grand opening, the Mustard Seed will be open for business every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside of the Living Room. Officials are hoping to add another day of business in the future, contingent upon the food truck’s initial success.

“The best part is seeing the hope that’s being restored,” said

Knowles. “I feel like I have friends now that I never had before. It’s about relationships and family. It’s really a beautiful thing.”

The Living Room’s Workshop took possession of the food truck in the fall of 2025 when it was accepted as a gift from another church. The last six months have been spent readying the Mustard Seed for service.

The Mustard Seed came along at a time when the Workshop was searching for purpose, not long after the Workshop had closed an emergency shelter.

“I remembered years ago we

used to borrow a food truck,” said Knowles. “I wondered if the church still had it and would they want to sell it. I sent the church an email, and they responded, ‘Actually, yes we have it, and we’re thinking it’s time to get rid of it.’ Weeks passed, and when they got back to me they said, ‘We would like to gift it to you.’ If I ever knew God was in the middle of everything, it was then.”

“The shelter was just the beginning,” said Holder. “We wanted to keep the momentum going, and the workshop was born out of that.”

are as varied as the types of employment available here.

“Some people are unemployed,” said Roggenbaum. “Companies significantly lay off, or factors cause ripple effects. It could be the field. Individuals may go from one warehouse to another. Sometimes transportation or child care are factors. Some of it is just lost jobs. Things like that do happen.”

PA CareerLink was established in Lancaster County in 2001; the site is one of the organization’s 66 locations in the state. More than 40 staff members work at PA CareerLink Lancaster County, but they are not technically employed by PA CareerLink, which receives both federal and state funding.

Those staff members operate an on-site food pantry, collect

blankets for those in need and volunteer in the community.

“PA CareerLink Lancaster County is a group of proud partners working together,” said Roggenbaum. “PA CareerLink is an umbrella. I wear a PA CareerLink shirt, I represent PA CareerLink, but I don’t work for PA CareerLink. Our clients don’t care about that. They just care about the services we provide.

“We get people who come in our doors regularly who didn’t know we existed or didn’t know that there was anyone who could help them,” concluded Roggenbaum. “We don’t want to be the best-kept secret. We’re here to help - help people get back to work.”
