Hanson agreed, listing Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico among the places whose cuisine will be represented, along with Pennsylvania Dutch foods. “We will have Italy, Russia, and from Asia, Vietnam,” Hanson added. The buffet-style meal will allow guests to purchase food to take out or eat at the church. According to Hanson, the 2018 buffet offered 260 guests 43 unique dishes made by staff members, parents, and friends of NHELC. “We have parents and teachers and community members from so many different countries represented here (at NHELC),” said Bortzel. “The teachers cook (dishes associated with) their heritage.” Hanson noted that they hope to serve more people at this year’s event. Dishes will be labeled and will provide guests with information about the country of origin. The meal is a fundraiser for NHELC. According to Bortzel, tuition from students covers about 85 percent of costs for the nonprofit center. Ranck-Hower explained that NHELC does not cap the number of students it enrolls who receive government aid. Funds raised See International Meal pg 8
