The library first introduced five STEM-focused kits for children and three dementia-friendly kits for adults in 2023. In the near future, the library hopes to offer nearly 40 kits for children and two low-vision aids geared to adults. Some of the kits are ready to be checked out, while others are still in the process of being cataloged.

The kits were provided by grants from the Ressler Mill Foundation and the Anne Brossman Sweigart Foundation, which were awarded in 2023. “Both grants were for creating kits of this nature to support the homeschool community and tools for readers with low vision,” said D’Agostino. During 2024, D’Agostino and Jen Watson, assistant director and youth services coordinator, chose and purchased items for the kits.
To determine which topics were among the best choices for learning kits, the pair looked at ELANCO School District standards; examined Science, Technology & Engineering, and Environmental Literacy & Sustainability Academic (STEELS) standards; and talked to local families, especially those that homeschool. “We used a lot of different resources,” shared Watson. “We were trying to think about the needs in the community, and we used that information to put together a variety so the whole community could use them.”
The new kits provide educational materials for

prekindergarten through high school. A letter construction kit includes color-coded pieces that can be put together to create letters and words. “This is to teach basic literacy. It’s hands-on work, so it helps a lot with retention,” explained Watson. The assembly also helps children develop fine motor coordination, which has been identified as a need for children entering kindergarten. Other early learning kits include a story time tote based on “The Mitten” by Jan Brett. The kit includes the book, a mitten, and animals to put inside the mitten as the story is read.
Life science kits include life cycle kits. Watson noted that she expects these kits, which are available for a caterpillar, a chicken, and a frog, will be popular with families. “The kits come with books for background information, and I try to put a storybook in there as well,” said Watson, who included “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle in the caterpillar kit. “It comes with life cycle manipulatives, so it has all the stages of a caterpillar,” she added. Watson also included a stuffed version of the Hungry Caterpillar that unzips and turns inside out to transform into a butterfly. “It’s hands-on, not sitting down to do a worksheet,” she said.
Dissection kits designed for use by high school stu-
dents feature a model of a rat or a frog. “The organs are magnetic, and they come out,” said Watson, demonstrating how easy the models are to take apart.
D’Agostino noted that a few miscellaneous kits include the Art of Argument kit based on logical fallacies and how to detect them. There are also a few historical kits based on the Simply Charlotte Mason homeschool curriculum. The Stuff They Left Behind Portfolios feature art, buildings, and artifacts. Several time periods and locations are included, such as the Middle Ages, modern times, ancient Greece, and ancient Egypt.
A number of new music kits, which will be available when they are cataloged, include color-coded percussion instruments such as handbells, resonator bells, and boomwackers - tubes that are pitched to the musical scale. “(The kits) include a staff, a vinyl replica of a keyboard, and color-coded song books,” noted D’Agostino.
“You learn a little bit about how to read music and play color-coded songs easily.”
D’Agostino said that the low-vision aids are available to give persons dealing with that disability a chance to test-drive such devices. “We have two things for adults that are new and special,” she stated. “This is a handheld magnifier available for checkout now, and there’s also a video desktop magnifier that has to be cataloged, and then it will be available for checkout.” She pointed out that while many aids exist tied to smartphones, these devices are set up for those who prefer less technologically advanced help. Because of the popularity of kits, a waiting list has been developed, and readers are welcome to call the library at 717-354-0525 to check on the availability of a kit. More information about the library, which is located at 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, may be found at http://www.elanco library.org.

at 8:15 a.m. A free Kids
Half-Mile Fun Run for children age 12 and under will be held following the 5K. Each participating child will receive a ribbon. “We have medals for the top boy and girl age 8 and under and the top boy and girl between age 9 and 12,” said Tempone. Parents are encouraged to run with their children.
The 5K route will follow Jackson Street east to Ranck Road, where it will turn right. Participants will turn right again at Airport Road and again at Windsock Way before picking up Runway Avenue and returning to Airport Road. Runners will once again turn right to follow Kinzer Avenue north, which will take them back to a right on Jackson to the park.
Cash prizes are awarded to the first three overall male and female winners, with the top prize being $100. Course records are 15 minutes, 20 seconds for men, set in 2023 by David Lutgen, and 18:12 for women, set in 2012 by Aimee Taylor. In addition, the top male and female runners in eight age groups, which are 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and age 70 and over, will receive awards. In keeping with

the cow logo of the event, glass milk bottles from a local dairy will be given to age group winners. “We still (give out the) glass milk bottles,” said Tempone. “It’s unique.”
Over the time the race has been run, the number of participants has varied. “It would be great to get 100 runners this year,” said Tempone, who hopes to raise at least $2,000 for the booster club. Funds raised by the event help to cover warmup gear for freshman cross-country runners along with other team expenses. “We get a T-shirt for each team member, and (the funds) help pay for invitational (meets),” noted Tempone. “Those are a big cost for us,” she stated, adding that the booster club pays for many invitational weekend meets for both the high school and middle school teams.
Runners who would like to take part in the
race may register at www.active.com by searching for “Farmer’s 5K.” Free T-shirts for runners who register on the day of the event will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. More information about the race may be found at https://sites .google.com/view/gsxc/ farmers-5k.

Fairmount is a community that feels like home
BY JEFF FALK
Community, compassion, dignity, integrity, quality, teamwork, trust.
Those are the stated Christ-like core values of faith-based Fairmount. One of Fairmount’s unstated values is value.
“Through our position here in northern Lancaster County, we’re rooted in the heritage of this area,” said Mitch Hanna, who’s been Fairmount’s director of marketing and communications for eight years.
“While we have adjusted over the years, we still hold true to our mission, which is offering Christ’s love in our caregiving. We try to make ourselves as affordable as possible. It’s quality care and a good-hearted message.”
Located at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata, on 73 scenic and sprawling acres
in West Earl Township, Fairmount offers various levels of assistance for older individuals, from personal care to short-term and outpatient rehabilitation services to independent living.
Fairmount is home to 52 cottages, 103 apartments, a health care center, an activities center, a dining room, a chapel, a library, a woodshop and administrative offices.
“We don’t shy away from our values,” said Hanna.
“We try to keep them in the forefront with our team.
We don’t shy away from our faith. When you’re helping someone, it’s a real humbling experience. It takes a lot of love and compassion. We try to model Christ’s love in our words and actions.”
Fairmount offers residents programs and activities that include exercise classes, book clubs, religious services, visiting speakers, a
sewing club, bocce, cornhole, day trips, gardening, a coffee hour and pet therapy.
“There are a lot of different things happening on campus,” said Hanna. “We try to tailor the activities to the people we are serving. They’re going to be doing activities that they are physically able to do. We try to do activities that stimulate the mind and the body. They’re community building types of activities.”
Currently, more than 370 individuals reside at Fairmount, some 220 of whom are located in the independent living apartments and cottages. Fairmount’s waiting list for accommodations is more than three years.
“They’re generally local folks or people who have connections to here or ties to the area,” said Hanna. “They’re kindhearted folks who

“The Weaverland Conference had some individuals in their congregations who couldn’t care for themselves,” said Hanna. “There were some folks who had an idea and came to the church with this idea. It got a little more traction, and then we’ve just grown throughout the years. The whole industry has changed, but we’ve stayed true to our Mennonite traditions. BY ANN MEAD ASH
When one hears the history of the Pequea Valley boys’ tennis program since 2022, one might wonder how Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fields a tennis team at all. However, quite the opposite is true.
Due to construction at the school, the PVHS tennis team has not had home courts for practice or to host games on since 2022, when the current senior
players were freshmen. Instead, the team practices mostly at the Paradise Park courts and at the courts at the park in Gap.
“At the beginning of the last season, we had five juniors,” noted coach Lela Fredricks.
“(The boys) recruited their friends (to join the team),” added Lori Winey, Pequea Valley Boys Tennis Boosters member.
With all that working against the 13 team mem-

bers, the team finished the 2025 season with a 13-1 record, making it to the semifinals in league playoffs. Both singles and doubles players advanced to District 3. At print time, the team had won its first district match against Berks Catholic High School.
“Having only two courts has not stopped them from loving the sport,” Fredricks said. “Tennis is a mental sport, and only having two courts, they could have
thought they would (not have a good season), but tennis is all about how your thoughts impact your actions.”
“It’s not recommended that a team play on only two courts, but they have survived and thrived,” stated Winey.
To help fund costs associated with travel and gear for the team, the booster club has organized a pickleball tournament fundraiser on

Winey said the idea of a pickleball fundraiser had been discussed for some time. “When we got talking about it, I asked the coach, ‘Can we do it?’” recalled Winey, who said that team member Nolan Stoltzfus and his father, Darryl, who have competed in pickleball events, stepped up immediately and offered to run the tournament. PVHS tennis team members will help to facilitate the tournament, and some may play if they are needed. Winey added that pickleball is popular with senior citizens. “Darryl
was thinking there are a lot of avid players that will come out,” she reported. Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and pingpong. It is played on a court the same size as a badminton court with a modified tennis net. Equipment includes a paddle and a plastic ball with holes in it.
The PV Boys Tennis Booster Club has been providing meals and lunches for team members as they travel to away games. They also purchased windbreakers for the boys to wear during this windy tennis season. “We had to outfit them, and we wanted them to be uniform,” reported Winey. “We didn’t have a home court advantage.” In addition, the team will lose seven seniors to graduation this spring. “We don’t want to leave the team with the funds depleted,” explained Winey. “They will need windbreakers and food. We like to keep them hydrated

because sometimes matches go very long.”
Fredricks added that she does not expect the team to have home courts until fall of 2026 at the earliest.
As the boosters look to build funds for future teams, Fredricks would like to see younger boys come out for tennis in the next year. She hopes the news about this year’s success will appeal to underclassmen. Calling the team “amazing,” Fredricks shared that outlook has been as important as chalking up wins. “(The team) has had such a phenomenal year,” she shared. “Their attitude has been
more impressive than their 13-1 record.”
Assistant coach Jason Graybill agreed, noting that the team members are willing to take part in any fundraiser that is suggested. “It’s something to say about the guys that they want to do fundraising,” he stated. “You don’t have to twist their arms because they want to support (the team).”
Looking ahead, Winey said the team members hope to leave a legacy for future teams. “They really want to see the next generation,” she said. “That’s their heart.”

Students sought for leadership program
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is seeking civic and environmental leaders in 10th through 12th grades to keep Pennsylvania clean and beautiful through the Young Ambassadors of Pennsylvania program. One of the program’s aims is to attract the next
generation of leaders to careers in state government. In December, the administration announced substantial increases in the number of Generation Z (Gen Z) and millennial employees who have joined the commonwealth workforce in recent years. This partnership, now in its fourth year, seeks to build on that success.

The Young Ambassadors program empowers young community stewards and civic leaders to become ambassadors in their community for a shared vision of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. Ambassadors will have the opportunity to train and network with industry leaders, state agencies, local media, and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network, and they will receive a taste of life in the public service sector.
Students will be chosen through a competitive application process. Applicants should be passionate about the environment and committed to protecting Pennsylvania’s natural beauty and environmental health through volunteerism and leadership.
Chosen candidates will be asked to commit to serve as Young Ambassadors from September 2025 through May 2026 and represent and uphold the mission and values of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.
Other responsibilities will include attending six mandatory virtual education sessions, conducting a community assessment and creating a summary presentation, organizing a community cleanup event through Pick Up Pennsylvania, and conducting one community education event or activity. Non-mandatory education sessions will also be offered on a variety of topics.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will provide education and training to program participants on topics such as the impact of litter on roadways, litter prevention, waste management and recycling, civic engagement and related public policy, volunteer management, and social media marketing. The program will provide networking opportunities to not only build a sense of community within the program but also to promote professional development of the individual students. In addition, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has partnered with industry leaders to provide job shadowing days to select Young Ambassadors.
Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, June 10. Students interested in applying may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org or contact Kylie McCutcheon at 724-836-4121, ext. 114, or kmccutcheon@keep pabeautiful.org.
